Hollinger's Top Three Nets: Harris, Lopez...CDR!

John Hollinger is out with his rankings of all NBA players, based on his own projected Player Efficiency Ratings. He ranks Chris Paul #1. Rating the Nets, Hollinger has Devin Harris at #22, Brook Lopez at #31, and Chris Douglas-Roberts at #173. He rates Harris the fourth best PG after Paul, Tony Parker and Deron Williams. Meanwhile, another stats guru writes that without Jason Kidd, the Nets were and will be bad.

So, where’s CLee at?

by Dude on Oct 5, 2009 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

Are you trying to tell me that there are only 186 players in the NBA’s over 400, that are better then Josh Boone? Don’t believe these stat guru’s. A pile of statistical crap.

by Mike on Oct 5, 2009 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

hollinger is a nets hater. this is idiotic.

by superb on Oct 5, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

He doesn’t think Lopez has a very high ceiling

by Tom on Oct 5, 2009 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

@ Tom;
John Hollinger fancies himself as the basketball version of Bill James. With all his great knowledge it is a wonder that no NBA team as hired him and his “stats don’t lie” approach, and made him their G.M. … Lopez’s ceiling isn’t high? What does that mean, that he can’t improve??? Stat’s can’t measure ones desire to be the best, and that is what really counts.

by Mike on Oct 5, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

Some perspective: Hollinger ranks Hedo Turkoglu at #29… among small forwards. That puts him behind the likes of Marvin Williams, Julian Wright, Kelenna Azubuike, Steve Novak (!!), Jared Dudley, CJ Miles, Wilson Chandler, Nicolas Batum and a single slot ahead of Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

Also, among small fowards: Brandan Wright is fourth — in front of Carmelo — and Anthony Randolph is sixth. What?

by Matthew Davis (Accelerate) on Oct 5, 2009 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

He has Ryan Anderson rated around 104 and Courtney Lee way over 200? Duh…

by Mike on Oct 5, 2009 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

I think he’s right about Ryan Anderson. The Nyets will regret moving him.

by NetRick on Oct 5, 2009 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

i think boone should start

harris/skip/dooling
lee/cdr/twill
simmons/hayes
boone/yi
lopez/battie

hayes is not going to start for long…he is better off the bench

How Josh Boone isn’t the 687th best player in the league baffles me.

by pegs on Oct 5, 2009 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

His system makes no sense. Absolute joke.

by claud on Oct 5, 2009 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

will twill get minutes if there aren’t injuries?

by Andy on Oct 5, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

Guys, remember these are EFFICIENCY rankings and are in no way accurately ranking the players in terms of talent/skill, hence the glaring incongruities. Therefore CDR technically IS more efficient than CLee since he has proven to be effective with limited minutes whereas CLee was a starter but didn’t produce all that much. The stats only account for PER and disregard any defense, which CLee was slightly above average in as a rookie. Anyways, glad to see CDR getting some love for once.

by NateDD on Oct 5, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

T-Will will be starting SF by January if not sooner.

by Mike on Oct 5, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Is Yi on the list?

If so, Hollinger must be 0.5% Chinese.

by Trenton on Oct 5, 2009 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

mike i do hope so…i think he can be very exciting. he didn’t do that bad yesterday

by Andy on Oct 5, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

@ Andy;
Even Larry “sour puss” Frank gave T-Will praise. I think he will be a special player for years to come. It may take sometime to learn the NBA, but he does have great athletic and mental skills when it comes to the game. He played much better in the second half, and that tells you something… he ain’t a quitter. Getting 11 points, 7 rebounds in a bad effort. Not bad…

by Mike on Oct 5, 2009 3:21 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting (in re the previous thread) that he ranks Rondo only a few hundredths of a PER point lower than Harris, even though PER basically ignores defense.

by A.S. on Oct 5, 2009 3:21 PM EDT reply actions

Yi is a few places behind Alston. SWat isn’t ranked because he played so poorly last year (and that is a big factor), Najera isn’t ranked because he played so little and TWill because he’s a rookie. Hollinger has never been high on TWill. On the other hand, Hollinger has always been very high on Harris and Lopez.

Carter ranked #53, Kidd is ranked 18th best point guard. Both those rankings are silly. A few years ago, Hollinger ranked Chuck Hayes above Kidd.

by Net Income on Oct 5, 2009 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

Yi 229
Big Baby 241
C. Lee 253

I guess Yi is better then Big Baby and Josh Boone (186) is better then both of them. Courtney Lee must really suck.
P.S. Don’t tell me Hollinger goes thru all these computations because he thinks they don’t reflex a players real worth. He wants you to believe that he knows that Ryan Anderson is better then 75% of NBA players. Why else would you post the rankings. If Lebron or Wade were 50th + 106th I would believe that was true, but it is obvious Hollinger is trying to tell you who he thinks is the best, or could be the best.

by Mike on Oct 5, 2009 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

Josh Boone is far from efficient.

by pegs on Oct 5, 2009 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

he’s very efficient at clanging free throws off the rim

These rankings are retarded

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Oct 5, 2009 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

The Barri article is a good article. Not good for the Nets, but good in that it is thorough. We will have problems this year and have players that do not produce wins. Yi is a zero (no surprise), bu Simmons is next best in win production after Harris. That is scary! I suspect Lopez will rise, but that leaves us with big holes everywhere. It was evident in the Knick’s loss. Who beside Lopez and Harris were effective? Simmons for his stretch, but that is it. We do not have scorers and sadly we lack the kind of energy that the Knicks rookie showed. I thought that was going to be TWill, but he was underwhelming to me. At least the Knick’s point guard rookie was hustling and making plays happen. If you can’t shoot well (see Twill, CDR, etc.) you better do other things well. At least CDR attacked.

by Geo on Oct 5, 2009 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

I hate Hollinger’s opinions in this article. He is wrong about Boozer, and wrong about Brook. AND I really only looked at five players on his list. He may be wrong about others too.

by Paul Erstein on Oct 5, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

Lol, I would like to see Hollinger explain to Kobe why Bynum is ranked higher or explain to Shaq why Oden is ranked higher

by Ispartan on Oct 5, 2009 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

Lee is before CDR, hollinger is an ass

by netsfan on Oct 6, 2009 4:05 AM EDT reply actions

I think the ranking of the Nets in Berri’s post is pretty accurate, although the relative placement of Simmons and Hayes surprised me. Everything else seemed pretty accurate. His methodology places a very high premium on rebounding where the Nets are weak.

by mt57 on Oct 6, 2009 9:38 AM EDT reply actions

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.

by Mike on Oct 6, 2009 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

If i were ranking NETS players, i would also put CDR before Lee. Not to say that i agree with Hollinger’s ranking, but I just beleive that CDR is a better player. He just does not get as much press as Lee just because the former was injured last year, and the latter played on a winning team.

by KJV on Oct 6, 2009 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

Berri may be the smartest dope ever—he must drive using his rear view mirror. We all know that this year will be tough. But are the pieces coming into place? Let’s see, rich owner willing to spend, check; cap space, check; new arena in NYC, check; talented young players to complement incoming big win producer, check; draft choices to facilitate trade or get additional young talent, check. Sure, we still need to seal the ownership and arena deals and land the big win producer, but what does that have to do with Jason Kidd and the rest of Nets history?

by jabez on Oct 6, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

The Nets should be a joy to watch this year. Hopefully Larry Frank can keep spirits up and expectations down. Lets make developing our young talent the first priority. Winning should not be that important right now. Playing smart and being competitive is what this team should aim for. Later (2010/2011) we start to win.
