Game 1 - Nets @ Timberwolves - Wednesday, October 28, 8:00

With no expectations beyond their own and a starting lineup with an average age of 23, the Nets take to the floor for the first time Wednesday in blustery Minneapolis. Newly named captain Devin Harris is healthy and ready. Only Keyon Dooling and Tony Battie are out. Al Jefferson (achilles) and Jonny Flynn (flu) will play for the Wolves. Kevin Love (hand) is out. Let the games begin!

This season is going to be great. I can’t wait for our young fellas to prove every single pundit wrong. Stars will be born.

Love your attitude. The preseason record was horrible, but it was obvious there were a lot of talented players on the court, just not all at the same time. With Harris, CDR, Lee, and Twill penetrating and Lopez posting, this is a team that will surprise.

by Kevind on Oct 27, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

We will be better than expected!!
We gave up several leads this preseason, in games that were certainly winnable. With Harris healthy hopefully we can hold on to leads!

It’s gonna be great when people start to recognize what we have on this team. I think we can win some games!!

by Andy on Oct 27, 2009 6:40 PM EDT reply actions

Unless Swat or Boone play PF for substantial minutes we can’t defend. If we can’t defend we can’t win. I hate to say it but having the good start last year clouded our issues. If we lose early and often it will bring change and change is what we need. 25-57 if the coach lasts the year. It might be what the team wants for the pick. Lopez, Swat, Yi, TWill/CDR, DH = 41-41 and be better than, NY, Tor and Phil just in our division. Defense is contagious but the coach has to start the process.

I lost the first 3 games of my season in Association Mode in NBA 2K10. Minnesota beat me by 8, Orlando beat me by 9, and Washington beat me by 19…. I finally beat the Bobcats by 28.

I hope real life goes better than my fictional-world’s season is going thus far.

GO NETS! Bang it in the post with Lopez all night, don’t settle for Simmons jumpers and don’t let him play the PF. I want to see a Dooling dunk off an Alston pass too!

“Andrés Says:

I’ll stop watching this game if Frank dares to play Bobby Simmons at the 4."

And stuff like this is exactly why I say the Nets will lose.

It’s hard to predict wins when the coach of this team is an absolute buffoon.

I’d rather Yi stay in the game and play through his mistakes and get embarrassed defensively until the light goes off in his head that he needs to take charge of what happens to himself on the court, instead of Simmons coming in there, being horrible on defense, and doing nothing but shoot threes. We don’t need a PF to shoot threes we need someone that can score in the paint and rebound, and that’s Yi.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Oct 28, 2009 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

Why would simmons play if we did well without him against the sixers? i thought frank said he’ll use cdr, twill and lee when we go small

by Andy on Oct 28, 2009 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

I imagine the only reason Simmons is getting as much play time as he is, is the fact that you can’t pay somebody that much money to sit on the bench. you gotta try to get something for your money. If Frank tried to sit him indefinitely his bosses would be rightly displeased.

by JT on Oct 28, 2009 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

Let’s go Nets!

I don’t expect much in terms on success this season. I just want to see how all the new guys and current core mesh. I don’t usually like saying this, but if key guys develop and we end up in the lottery, then the sky’s the limit for 2010-11.

by MrT on Oct 28, 2009 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

Hey guys, lets play a few games first before waiving the white flag. Half the guys posting on this site are the last guys I would want on any team of mine.

Why Terrence Williams should be starting;
(Came across this piece but forgot where I got it from)

When I asked Louisville assistant coach Walter McCarty about Williams, his report was glowing.

"Terrence can have a huge effect on a game without ever scoring a bucket."

McCarty and head coach Rick Pitino loved it that Williams allowed them significant roster flexibility, perhaps more than any other player in college basketball last season. Not only did Williams dish up some remarkable passes to his fellow Cardinals, but he also got after it on the boards better than almost any shooting guard in memory.

Finally McCarty made sure to note that they "would also use his strength on defense to stop opponent’s best players."

Not their best wings, their best players. Period.

by Mike on Oct 28, 2009 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

Even though this is the first game of the year, I really think this is a must win for the confidence of the team. We get to open vs a west team expected to finish in the basement with a hurt Al Jefferson. I think if the Nets come out and run we will be fine and should win this game rather easily but I guess we’ll wait and see.

It feels like time is going so slow today lol. Guess it’s just cuz I cant wait to see the game and our team, with the exception of L Frank. I know we’re not gonna have a great team, but I’d rather watch young guys give max effort and lose than watch high priced players lose night in and night out. Sit the Vets and let the young guys play, yes including Sean. We have nothing to lose anyway so why not let him play? I just wish someone would tie L Frank to a chair and leave him at the hotel each game so maybe we can get a real coach lol.

In the service you follow your leader even if you don’t like or respect him. Opie is our leader. Net players and fans have to give him our full support. If he fails let him go out on his shield with the respect he’s due. Lets go Nets…

by Mike on Oct 28, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

I think guys like CDR and Twill and Brook are going to bring a culture of winning or at least a culture of effort to this team. If a player phones it in or doesn’t perform well, they are going to hear it from these guys, and it won’t be sugar-coated. I’ve been wishing for a while for a situation like this, where motivation comes from within the team and doesn’t have to come exclusively from the coach. The coach can draw up the plays and set the tone, and the players can police themselves as far as motivation goes.

by JT on Oct 28, 2009 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

@JT;
Very good and important point; I think you can also put C. Lee up there with CDR, Lopez and T-Will, maybe on top from what I have seen in preseason and heard from Orlando websites.

If your leader is incompetent, you’re just as bad if you follow him unless you have no choice like you’re paid or committed to do so. Fans are neither therefore, imo you’re just as bad to support him but I do hope for the best.

by Mr. Big on Oct 28, 2009 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

Simmons will get some PT because management needs to showcase Bobby in order to be traded for his $11.2 million expiring contract.

The current Litigation and Dooling’s injury are holding things up. Nets are an orphan team in the meantime.
Financing and a brilliant Thorn trade will happen quickly after those 2 issues are resolved.

Simmons will do better shooting-wise when Harris is back in lineup to find him in his favorite corner spot. Bobby has no guilty conscience (unlike say Boone), so he will keep shooting until his touch comes back. He is terrible in every other way, except for an occasional miracle pass (to VC).

I don’t know if you got my reply about Springsteen in 1976.
I did see him that week at the Paladium. I saw (2) shows. I can’t believe you were lucky to see (6). Who knows, I might of been sitting right next to you. Small world sometimes. Unbelievable concerts, but the New York/N.J.Jersey area concerts in 1978 were the best of all time in my opinion. Still have my recorded tapes of the WNEW free broadcast concert from Jersey (Tuesday nite). Best concerts ever,by anyone including the Stones or Who at their best.

LET’S GO NJ NETS!!!! Can we start a petition to bring back the “New Jersey” blue road jersey, I honestly can’t stand the red ones. I’d even be open to the silver ones we rocked back in the early Kidd days.

Here’s to proving the many haters wrong and to all of our young talented players developing quickly. Harris, Lopez, Lee, CDR, and the rookie T-Will, is a solid core. We are going to surprise a lot of people this year…and if Yi comes through this year (I know that’s hoping for a lot, but he just needs to play with confidance) we’re back in the playoffs.

And last but not least…DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE!!!!!

This red jerseys are just so HIDEOUS. This is ridiculous. The worst uniforms ever worn by the Nets BY FAR. They even make those laternate grey road unis from the Kidd look nice in comparison and of course those at least read “New Jersey” on them. It is really time we start letting Yormark know how we feel – those of us who care. Can’t believe 41 games this season will be tarnished by those despicable red jerseys that belong in Division III college basketball at best.

I believe that Yi’s plus/minus for the first half is something like +18. The point is not that Yi is great, the point is that the team is much worse with Hayes or Simmons at PF.
