On Rookie Options, Think Three Yes, One No

The Nets have til next week to decide whether to pick up options on Brook Lopez, Courtney Lee, Yi Jianlian and Sean Williams. Three are easy, writes Al Iannazzone: The Nets will pick up third year options on Lopez and Lee while declining a fourth year on Williams. As for Yi, his $4 million contract next season takes up a big chunk of the salary cap, but many in the organization have faith in him. So, he'll be picked up too.

4 mil for a back up PF won’t be too bad

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Oct 23, 2009 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

Dumpe sean Williams once and for all plz. waste of money on him!

by mr. omG on Oct 23, 2009 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Lopez and Lee are no brainers. Swat will be upset cuz he’s out 2.5 million next year but the decline of his option will set him free which will be the best thing to happen to him. As far as Yi they could pick it up as long as I’m not paying it and with Proky on board, the 4 mil is just another night out. The people who have faith in Yi should be the first ones Proky gets rid of when he takes over. If you don’t have talent or can’t judge talent what good are you?

by Mr. Big on Oct 23, 2009 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

Of Course, they have faith in Yi because they have another contract that is done after this year.

I was hating on Yi big time last season, but I see reason for optimism now. He’s made some progress, and I’ve grown accustomed seeing him out there on the floor. I wouldn’t want to see him on some other team. GO YI!

by JT on Oct 23, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

What a waste of cap space! Yi should go, but that would make Kiki and Thorn look bad after giving away RJ for nothing. His 4 mil would be better spent on a hard nosed player with some bulk. But, this year is about Yi – I just hope that they know that this is his last.

by geo on Oct 23, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

4 mil! What is the risk? Who is going to take him from us?

by geo on Oct 23, 2009 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

Yi is very talented. Bargnani similarly struggled mightily his first two years in the league before breaking out big time his third year. The same may happen with our Yi. Boston wanted him for Big Baby this past offseason. Chances are a bunch of other teams would be interested in him as well at 4 million per year. People have bashed Yi unmecilessly for more than a year, so to have him do well would be a big blow to their egos. They would much rather see him fail than see him succeed.

4 million is about what a good BACKUP 25 year old PF gets these days.
Besides, doesn’t he bring in extra marketing revenue, such as the Haier commercials from China?
Other than Haier, I would like someone to explain exactly how Nets make money from all the people who follow Yi in China??
Can someone document how much money that is? Maybe the NBA should be paying some of is salary.

by jerry25 on Oct 23, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe the Knicks can take Yi…Win/win for everyone, NY gets their huge Chinese name to draw in even more sponsors, and Yi will benefit from D’Antoni’s fast and loose shoot & no D system

by NateDD on Oct 23, 2009 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

“Yi a no-brainer” should only be followed by “to underachieve and disappoint”

by Trenton on Oct 23, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

from what I’ve seen the Knicks are playing some aggressive D. they keep lunging into the passing lanes. good way to create turnovers vs the Nets who tend to get sloppy at times with the passing.

Yi should not get picked up!! decline him and get david lee, although hell be more, next year!Seriously picking him up might be the difference between 1 and 2 big( not star) fa’s. Like a combo of gay and lee

question if we dont pick up guys options do we still get there larry bird rights, can we resign them to go over the cap,
if so dont sign pick up NY OF THEM, SIGN lebron and boozer , or lebron and bosh then resign these guys,
as for yi 4 mil is market rate for a back up 4/5 gortat and bass got moere with multiple yrs, swat for 2,5 i think would be a good deal if they played the poor kid , he will develope someqhere else,DO WE HAVE TO PICK UP BOONES OPTION WHAT IS THAT WORTH?

by jack on Oct 23, 2009 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

@Jack – how do you even suggest not picking up Lopez’s option? That is crazy. And picking up Lee’s option has to be a no brainer after trading VC for him.

by Ryan243 on Oct 23, 2009 5:35 PM EDT reply actions

Im Getting tired of hearing about Boozer

by mikee21 on Oct 23, 2009 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

well, at least everyone on this site knows he’s a back up — too bad kiki doesn’t. Let’s reverse this: would Thorn ADD 4 mil for Yi if he were a Free Agent? Would he spend that much for a backup 4? I don’t think so.

by joe on Oct 23, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

We have not Ryan Anderson

We choice Yi

So Nets pick up the option to Yi’s fourth year!

by kimssau on Oct 23, 2009 6:41 PM EDT reply actions

Yi at $4M is a bargain. Think of all the sponsors Yormark can get from China. These sponsors are enough to pay for the salaries of Yi, Brook, and Courtney.

by Krakista on Oct 23, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

@RYAN, I DIDNT MENTION LOEZ AND LEE OF COURSE THOSE GUYS, I MENTIONED yi,swat and boone, lopez will be a allstar and lee looks like a young rip hamilton i dont think he will be a star but a very good starter,
good teams trade or keep assets, with our coach he kills assets, orlando kept gortat and will trade him at some point, they let the league no they are a real team, when we let nenad go for 4 mil that sent a bad meesage to the league,, as for our players a good coach would build there value and trqade them , boone swat do u see there numbers cpompared to minutes per game excellent,,
i still would like to know if we decline boone swat yi can we have there rights to sign and trade or go over the cap to resign?

by jack on Oct 23, 2009 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

I love the lingering lines about our coach killing young players. Brook, CDR and now Twill. Don’t forget Harris and now Lee. who has he killed? bad players like MWilliams and Swilliams???

by joe on Oct 24, 2009 7:35 AM EDT reply actions

Chris2 is right.

Yi has averaged 12.7ppg (on .466 shooting from the floor) and 7.6rpg in just 26.7 minutes per night. If he plays 30+ minutes a night, I think he’ll average 15/16 ppg and 7/8 rpg this season.

I think picking up his option is the absolute right thing to do.

I am also hoping that not picking up Sean’s option (which I think it’s the right decision too) makes him realize he needs to bring it every single day and that he has to take advantage of any opportunity he’s given. I think that eventaully, he’ll make his way back in the rotation as he did last year after he came back from the DLeague.
