NBC Likes Lopez for MIP...Not So ESPN Experts

NBC Sports thinks Brook Lopez will be the NBA's Most Improved Player, saying "he will emerge as one of the best big men in the East". Not so, say ESPN's Experts. They're going with Andrew Bynum or Greg Oden. Lopez got no votes from the 20 experts. But two think Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston could be in line for top awards. Lee got one vote for Most Improved while Alston got one for Sixth Man.

Brook spent the whole psot season working on his post moves, he forget to shoot some jump shots, consequestly, he has struggled mightily from the field. Nontheless, he promises to be a very good second year center.

lopez is 13 points 8 rebounds and 1.9 block per game
now as one of the offensive weapons in the team he can go to 17-9-2 but thats no mayor improvement.
on the contrary CDR, if he plays the same way he has done in preseason, could go from his shamefull score of:
5-1-1 per game
to
18-3-2 and 1 steal per game
now thats my MIP!!!

I don’t know how Lopez can be considered MIP anywhere when he’s “expected” to take strides forward in his development where-as other players considered for MIP haven’t done much at all yet and could only “possibly” make a big jump forward. This is why I don’t understand how Granger won it over Harris last season. With Granger, you saw progression since his rookie year. With Harris he went from total inconsistent play, mostly due to his role on the Mavs, to being a main man in NJ and suddenly became an all-star. Know what I’m sayin? I don’t expect Lopez to ever be considered for MIP. What I expect is for him to become what so many expect him to be which is a Legit Star center for the Nets.

Lopez better start working out with weights. He needs more muscle on him for the wear and tear of a long season coming up. It might also improve his rebounding and movement playing down low. Prediction 16pts, 8reb, 2 blks

Lopez’s play in the last 3 preseason games has really got me concerned about his ability to step up this year, as defenses are surely going to be paying more attention to him with VC gone. He looks like he is getting pushed around a lot and when he faces a double he reacts by hoisting a low percentage shot instead of locating and delivering the ball to the open man. I thought he could be an 18 and 9 guy but now I am not so sure.

ESPN’S predictions have absolutely no teeth

@ I agree with wondering – They should have a rule for MIP where they cant give it to 2nd year players.
If you are a rookie and get no PT, depending on the talent, there is a chance you should improve if next year you get more PT.

@Chris2
Lopez’s play mostly likely had more to do with him protecting his body and getting it ready for the wear and tear of the NBA season.

@ Chris – If he doesnt get the ball, how do you expect him to step up? I dont like the way this NEW offense is going.

Who are we kidding here? Everytime a Nets player is said to win an award for the next season, it ends up going to someone else instead. Let’s not forget that Harris was said all last season how he would win MIP but it went to Granger instead despite everything said about him winning it. Even when Lopez was said to win ROY it went to DRose instead. I betcha if he wasn’t wearing a Nets uniform, he would win it easily.

@ Tal
Well, given that both the Bulls and the Pacers finished ahead of us, with the Bulls actually MAKING the playoffs, I can understand how Rose won ROY. I feel you on the MIP front last year, but then again Granger’s team did finish ahead of us. So, in a sense you are right, if the Nets played to the level of other teams, our players might win some awards.

I agree that Brook making a major step forward in his progress should not garner MIP consideration. But that is the way the award is structured. I also think awarding it to a 2nd or even 3rd year player is also unfair. Playing time can vary so much in the first 2 years of a player’s career.
I do predict that TWill garners at least a couple of 3rd place votes for ROY at season’s end. I do think that he is going to be a good player for us and a key part of the future.

I definitely think Brook should get the ball a lot more. The offense should go through him for long stretches. However, he needs to learn to pass out of a double. Two guys on him means one of his teammates is open. Also, based on his play last year, I thought him developing his lower leg strength was the biggest key in him becoming an all star caliber player. I still think he is weak in that area, and it is contributing to him getting pushed out of the paint and he is starting his post ups too far away from the basket. Also, he has to be more aggressive on the boards, particularly the offensive boards. It looks like he is not interested in trying to grab an offensive rebound. The same can be said of Yi. You can’t just allow the defense easy access to control the glass like that. You have to put pressure on them. All in all, I am hoping Brook is waiting for the regular season to turn up the intensity. Because if he doesn’t make his precense known when the games count, this year could be very ugly.

@ Chris2
What i dont understand is why Brook would just take forced shots when double teamed. Why not pass it to a teammate? Where is coaching? Frank? It was so obvious that he was struggling so i dont understand why he still kept doing it and what the coaching has done in response to that. I mean, if i was the coach that would’ve never happened twice believe me.
