Knicks Beat Nets ... Again

The Nets will have just one more chance for a preseason victory after falling to the Knicks 94-92 at the Prudential Center Wednesday night. After a tight first quarter, the Knicks shot 14-for-16 in the second and led by 18 at halftime. The Nets came all the way back in the third and led by one going into the final 12 minutes. But with the Knicks playing four rookies down the stretch, they went on a 7-0 run to take a 5-point lead in the final minute and held on for the win after Courtney Lee missed at the line with one second left. Chris Douglas-Roberts got to the rim at will and led all scorers with 26 to go along with five rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks. Lee finished with 19 points and two steals. They combined to shoot 15-30, but the rest of the team shot 31 percent. A crowd of 15,721, 3,000 more than last week, were at "The Rock," including Dwight Gooden, Joe Jackson, and members of Mikhail Prokhorov's Onexim Group, but not Prokhorov himself.

What a tough loss.. damn. but it was a sick game though

by Steven on Oct 21, 2009 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

Great end to the game.
Lee could become our end of game automatic free throw misser.
Too bad he couldn’t hit the last to send it to overtime.
Anyways, I hope we win the next game to at least have a winning feeling in the preseason.

I think LFrank is playing to loose. Otherwise how he can explain the play of Simmons or rather playing him all second quarter. I was so frustrated. He lost the game again for us.

im really impressed man
the nets could have won
should have won
and deserved to win
this team is hungry
Brook looked good but has to “floor” someone in this league to get some paint respect
3 ft attempts on 18 shots?
welcome back NBA refs!!!
CDR? 26 5 4 4 steals? thats a VC stat line…
I dont know about you guys
Im excited! GO NETS

Yes , what a coach, he wanted to show that Simmons is a good defender. We have the momentum and Frank lose it because of the same stupid, idiotic style of coaching. I like to watch the NETS but Frank just spoils the fun . I could see him shouting emphatically again, common it’s only pre-season, this is just unacceptable.

@ rd just got back it felt like alot more. rock capacity for basketball is 18,000 izod is 20,000 so maybe that is why. Think izod should curtain off some sections. Atmosphere was awesome!!

Impressed? The nets didn’t do anything impressive tonight. I wanted to see some swat today..btw twill really gets up to rebound. Hopefully things will look better with Harris on the floor and can’t forget Hayes. I don’t want to see anymore najara.

Frank and Simmons make me feel ashamed as a Nets fan.
I can’t believe the Knicks fans ripped our players and I actually agreed with them.

should of kept twill in the game..would of done him some good.

SOLD OUT!
I was there a bit after tip-off.
And I just bought a 10 tick off of someone w/ an extra and slid up to the 12th row behind the hoop.
It wasn’t of course packed.
But easy 3/4 filled, if not more.
Great turnout. Great Vibe. (especially when they came back). The fans actually got into the game for the 2nd half, not just the hoopla.
I still need to find and kill the inventor of the ‘thunder sticks.’

I hate that rotation. It is always always the same!

by Skaye on Oct 21, 2009 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

I can’t believe Frank continues to play Simmons so much. This was the perfect opportunity to allow Yi to get in at the end of the game in a crunch time situation. Instead we get Simmons clanging long jumpers and ruining it for the team. I actually like this team but the lack of an inside tough guy with some grit is going to bite us in the ass time and time again.

by Chris2 on Oct 21, 2009 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

People could say all they want but I just cannot stand the way the Nets play they get these comebacks but then dont deliver. The Knicks wanted this game more I remember 2-3 years ago the Knicks beating the Nets was like a Tornado in L.A. I dont know why they just give up.
I dont blame Lee for choking because he shouldnt of been put in that position. CDR played his heart out and score but no one else did anything. It seems like Rafer Alston just doesnt care and plays for the pay check. Bobby was busy trying to fight Nate, and everyone else was doing nothing.
What is up with Brook latley honestly? Like people have said he has been getting pushed around and just hasnt delivered for us. Does our team just not want to play or is Frank getting out coached everytime?

Was at the game tonight too. Was actually in the first row courtside. It was awesome! Doc Gooden and Joe Jackson, Michael’s father was sitting right in front of me. Definitely a once in a life time experience.

Like others have said, the atmosphere was awesome. If Brooklyn falls through then Newark would support this team tongue and cheek.

As far as the game goes, well, Bobby Simmons needs to find a permeanant seat on the bench. Why Frank put him in there is beyond me. Don’t know why he didn’t go to Yi. I can’t even believe i’m saying that. Yi looks much improved. Alot more confident, shots are falling, alot more aggressive. Why he wasn’t in the game in the end is beyond me.

CDR is great. I’ve been saying this guy has talent and he showed it tonight. Excellent slashing ability. Kind of reminds me a little bit of Vince.

Courtney Lee was good. He made a few good shots. Didn’t see the last few seconds of the game but I know he missed at the line from what i’ve heard.

Brook was Brook. Wasn’t outstanding.

Defense played great in the 3rd quarter. Line up of T Will, CDR, Courtney, and Brook brought alot of energy to the table. They played locked down D!

All in all it was a great experience. I really hope to see another game at the Rock!

by Nets in 2010 on Oct 21, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

If Nets want to be competitive this year they better play like they did in the 3rd quarter all year long. Fast, intesnse, suffocating D, get out and run with the elite athletes. If we dont do that, we will be an awful awful team.

by Chris2 on Oct 21, 2009 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

Not only did 4/5 of our starting line up get beat by Hughes and 4 rookies, Frank’s NEW offense wasnt around.

Chris great point. Why wasnt the whole starting line up in there? What excuse will Frank use here? I can only imagine the post game interview if there is one.

I would have respected Frank more if he pulled the starters and played Blaylock, Hassel, Simmons, Boone and Swill against that Knick squad. Granted I am not a big fan of D’antoni, but at least he gets it. lets see what these guys can do. winning a freaken Preseason game!!!!! Show some balls Frank. by playing the starters you didnt prove jack!!!!

by SIC on Oct 21, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

@ joet – Dont worry!! Frank misses him too so he has unleashed CDR. ISOs are back baby!!!!! CDR vs. 5. I like CDR’s game but if Frank and people think that this is the NEW offense this is going to be another wasted year. If lopez isnt established has the Offensive anchor, this year is wasted with this Freaken Lame Duck Coach.

by SIC on Oct 21, 2009 10:32 PM EDT reply actions

All I got to say is: we are gonna be nasty when Devin gets back if Rafer can play like this off of the bench. Defense is there, if Duhon did not get hot we would have won easily.
We should find some way to trade Boone, and Dooling or Rafer for DeJuan Blair though. 10 reb, 17pts 14min = nasty

by jerrod on Oct 21, 2009 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

Whats the deal with Bobby Simmons ending games? Yi should have def been in there. He was not hot, but he was doing a good job. Frank made a questionable move there

by jerrod on Oct 21, 2009 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

Look at how Yi only played 23 minutes and got 9 rebounds, 3 of those offensive. But i guess u guys are argue knicks a poor rebounding team. But Yi only got 11 shots, WTF MAN!? Give him 15-20 shots and he’ll give u 20 and 9 + a steal and a block every single game.

Peace out.

by Jackey on Oct 21, 2009 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

with vc gone…we have no player who’s clutch. lee missed a game winning alley-oop in the finals, missed a game winning 3 a few nights ago and missed a game tying free throw no less tonight…good game and good player tho…just saying he aint clutch…vc would have won at least 2 of those games for us.

by jirohkanzaki on Oct 21, 2009 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

Saw the second half and I was real impressed by the effort, erasing that 18 point deficit in the 3rd quarter. some good PHYSICAL play… Simmons clobbering Nate, and a little later some kind of moving pick set by Boone that got him an offensive foul but still was nice to see our guys throwing down out there. I think the competitive spirit of guys like CDR and TWill may be lighting a fire under this team. If the team can find motivation from within, and not have to rely on the coach inspiring them, and they care about winning games, it could be a good season. CDR is so aggressive. I love it. you just know he is going to the basket. was he playing some point tonight? great end game dramatics too, was fun to watch. We came close to stealing it.

by J Tallent on Oct 21, 2009 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

@jirohkanzaki

Courtney Lee is going into his sophomore season. Let’s relax on the “he ain’t clutch” theme. Let’s not forget how big of a factor he was for Orlando last year.

by Sami on Oct 21, 2009 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

gotta see what we look like with Devin on the floor. CDR can score that’s for sure. We couldn’t get it done with 4 rookies and Hughes in the game. we need these guys to all grow up real fast or it’s gonna be a loooong season. But I think it’ll all be worth it in the end. but it’ll be frustrating for a while…

Now just picture if the Nets could make comebacks like this and lose all six preseason games with close loses not one time did they lose a game blown out, Just think about if we had played with Harris, Hayes, and Dooling it would of turned out a different outcome so please stop the complaining about awww man the Nets suck oh another lost please just cut it out.

There is nothing wrong with the players , it’s how the coach put them in. They all have talent. But this coach is really unbelievable why he still got this job. I never see this guy win because of his plans. Last year he was force when Boone got injured , if not for the injury he will not play Brooks. I sometimes feel I hope Simmons, Hassle get injured so the other rookies can play.
Haaay Caramba. I hope Kiki and Thorn will tell this guy, yell as emphatic as he does inside the court and remind him this year is about the young players, not these overpriced veterans who are not included in the future plans. I don’t know what’s not hard to understand about that. Frank young players should get in stupid not veterans.

we had carter haris and brook, i believe we were in back of the bobcats who had 1 good player in okurfur,
or yrs of being in the week east with kidd rj vince and nenad frank has a 500 record,
byron scott took us to 2 finals, he went to the hornets revived tyson chandlers carrer ,skyrocketed dwest to a 2 time allstar, and went to west con finals 2 yrs ago and gave the lakers a scare.
who does frank make better what young players developed,he killed most of our number 1 picks ,we went winless in the summer league and preseason,

CDR is the man ! Reading all these reports about how he was livid during halftime and then after the game talking to players motivating that shows signs of leadership and he backs up everything he says with his play on the court. IDC what y’all say about Williams starting over Roberts NO WAY CDR proved late last year and this entire preseason that he deserves to start Williams can handle the second unit.

i said this for 2 months , frank will play battie najera alston hassel and hayes and the kids will rot, he figures he can win 2 more games save himself, he doesnt know sports if i win john madden football i cant coach the giants,he cant hit a layup he doesnt realise players need to have confidence to play or play 10 minutes and get benched for a week

and if i read another cdr post, to start ill go crazy, you cant have your 1,2,3, position players all under 6/6/all rail thin, and get a total of about 7 rebounds per game from those 3 slots,, plus lee and cdr dont get assists, and only lee can hit from outside,
add yi for about 6 rebounds per game and your 4 startes will get 13 rpg,if they want to tank the yr fine but i wanna see swat boone twill lee cdr harris and lopez, PERIOD

starting 5 should be harris, lee, compliment each other both scorers one outside 1 slashing,,,twill doesnt look to score but plays d and fills out the stat sheet ,he can run the offense allitle let harris score off the ball,
YI at the 4 hes annointed, i dont hate yi but on a real team hes a reserve, swat right in back of him off the bench, Lopez will be a star, foolowed by boone off the bench, cdr of the bench designated scorer
TRADE ASAP, ALSTON before the luster of being a finals gaurd wears off, battie before people realise hes a statue, dooling before he breaks down more, najera old,
i take anything back for them 2nd round pick and expiring deals, jarvis hayes is useless here a team like nugets or spurs could use him, SIMMONS hasel i dont dress them i wait to use them in a trade or buy them out after the deadline, alston would be perfect in philly,

It struck me that management does not have a lot of experience with basketball games and the temporary stands, which sit over the hockey pad, seem unstable.

there needs to be trades you cant have 15 men rosters, you need a 9 man rotation, whos in fine if boones in say you get 25 mpg for 5 games if u stink swat gets the same, last yr we had swift swat boone ryan yi, only yi knew if he would play 5 minutes or not play for another week, i remeber ryan went 5 of 5 from the field 3 of 3 from the line and didnt play 3 of the next 4 games or something like that

Even though they lost, it was still a great game to attend. I liked how the Nets came back by showing signs of life in the third quarter while placing the Knicks on a drought. The Nets even tried to come back in the closing minutes. I will still give them an A for effort, which is more than enough. Honestly, teams that did had a bad record in the preseason usually did very good in the regular season and vice versa most of the time.

by Tal Barzilai on Oct 22, 2009 12:46 AM EDT reply actions

Even if inconsistent, I take heart by the effort that was shown by our young guys tonite. CDR with super-stats, Lee inventive to the end, 20 boards between Brook and Yi, TWill’s 6 rebs and good defense; then there’s the seasoned Alston with 8 asts, 4 rebs, 9 pts. This is all without Devin.

I am encouraged. Just gotta work on sustaining the intensity level and we have the start of a credible, exciting team. I think the Nets will get better as the season progresses (especially with a stable rotation and the absence of certain players who “played” tonite). Still developing, yes, but improving.
Aside: GREAT GAME CDR!

by Jeff on Oct 22, 2009 12:55 AM EDT reply actions

I just saw my DVR taping I was really surprised we came back from being down 17 I think it was. CDR was amazing out there he is just so smooth and creative. The best lineup was when Twill CLee and CDR were on the court. That lineup played great defense. At the end of the game though Frank was stupid and had Simmons at the 4 against Hill. Frank doesn’t think he should have put Yi in. I loved the last 15 seconds of the game even though Lee couldnt make the last to free throws. I also Hate Nate Robinson

by Ben on Oct 22, 2009 12:57 AM EDT reply actions

Yes take into consideration how well the Nets played without Harris, Now include Harris in the line-up= Different outcome on games.

by mikee21 on Oct 22, 2009 1:00 AM EDT reply actions

Terrence Williams can rebound and plays stellar defense. He can run the offense and his energy is contagious. He never slows down. We need him in the starting lineup. CDR is proving to be a great scorer, but, he will have a hard time guarding many 3’s in the league and does not have the knack to grab rebounds like Terrence. CDR should be the first player off the bench and he should still get about 30 minutes a game switching in and out for Courtney and Terrence. He is, however, more of a 2 not a 3.

by JustinNJ on Oct 22, 2009 1:01 AM EDT reply actions

I thought Rafer was a better scorer than he has shown thus far in the preseason. It seems his shot has been really off.

by JustinNJ on Oct 22, 2009 1:03 AM EDT reply actions

I wouldn’t even argue that CDR could start over Courtney Lee at the 2.

Fire Frank!

HO…you know the rest.

by Shawn Carter on Oct 22, 2009 1:16 AM EDT reply actions

@JustinNJ

Lets be honest here, You take Lee out of the starting rotation all your doing is eliminating the three ball. CDR hasn’t proved to be a three point shooter because that’s not his game so the 2 spot no. Williams Shot is off and on its been on the last couple games so I can’t argue that point. Harris is ok with the three ball but still you just have three slashers on the court at the same time wheres the three ball?…Yi? who should be in the paint with Lopez? So no CDR doesn’t start over Lee and Williams Doesn’t start over CDR.

by mikee21 on Oct 22, 2009 1:24 AM EDT reply actions

I agree. CDR should start at the 2…. Back court of Harris and CDR. TWill at the 3. And Brook and Yi up front Back ups should be 1.Alston/Dooling 2. CLee 3. Hayse. 4. SWat 5. Boone. Players I didnt name WILL not be here next year so no need to play them.

by Dan the Fan on Oct 22, 2009 1:52 AM EDT reply actions

So i finally got to see a preseason game, and when I tuned in in the start of the third, I was pretty bummed. But watching this team just go all out and close that huge gap was awesome, I’m really liking the lineup of Lee, CDR, Brook, and Twill, and adding Harris will only mean good things. The three youngsters really impressed me, especially Lee at the end!

That being said, Bobby Simmons needs to stay far, far away from close games. That was just painful watching him kill every single drive by randomly chucking up low percentage shots and trying to be Vince. Just horrible. We need to either trade him immediately or just cut him. Is that even an option?

by Frigidevil on Oct 22, 2009 1:59 AM EDT reply actions

You can cut him but he still gets paid so that will be just a waste of money cutting him.

by mikee21 on Oct 22, 2009 2:33 AM EDT reply actions

by Frigidevil on Oct 22, 2009 2:47 AM EDT reply actions

Whoever willing to pay the rest of his contract which is no1 because nobody feel he worth the contract he has so that’s a big negative for the Nets.

by mikee21 on Oct 22, 2009 2:59 AM EDT reply actions

BLopez must be screaming for some help down low.
Yi would be Okay, coming off bench.

@jack
Agree, it would be nice to have Boozer instead of Simmons – easy win with that swap.

However, Boozer (who will be 28 this year) is playing great for Utah in preseason. His price may be going Up, not Down, as long as there are 2 bidders in coming weeks.

I suspect that Dooling would have to be healthy before Nets would be able to make a deal for a real PF – probably need to involve 3 teams. Alston must go as there will be no room for another shoot-first selfish player.

Imagine adding Boozer; getting Harris, Hayes and Dooling back and subtracting Simmons and Alston!! Definitely worth giving away the Dallas 1st round pick. Nets will have to trade some of those 9 draft picks as some point anyway.

by jerry25 on Oct 22, 2009 3:31 AM EDT reply actions

Boozer is not worth trading draft picks for especially seeing how this years draft is suppose to be deep with talented power forwards\Big Men. This years draft is some what like the free agent pool deep with talent is Boozer really worth all of that? I don’t think so, stop worrying about a losing season its for the young players to develop and adding more talent this year with the picks not to trade them away.

by netsfan on Oct 22, 2009 6:03 AM EDT reply actions

Simmons always appeared to be the most useless player out there, and yet the brilliant coach Frank always found some significant playing time for him. What does it tell you?
Frank & Simmons = Nets’ loss!!!
We gonna have a hard time pulling off a win already. When we are close, we’ll have the great Lawrence Frank making some great decisions such as playing Simmons who’s been shooting at like 15% and turned the ball over 4 times.
This season is not just about being not as talented as other teams; it’s the same old lacking of some REAL leadership skills.

by biggie on Oct 22, 2009 6:12 AM EDT reply actions

I really really hope the Nets go on a horribly long loosing streak just to get this undeserving coach out of New Jersey. You want a rebuilding? You need to set everything straight first. Frank is not straight.

by biggie on Oct 22, 2009 6:14 AM EDT reply actions

We need to shoot better and defend better. We need our starting point guard back, even though Alston played well. Courtney Lee has game. The Knicks are not an easy team to defend, but with more even effort we might have won. But it just doesn’t matter, it just doesn’t matter, IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER! It is pre-season folks. But what does matter is the rotations, and who appears to be in it, and who is not. Sean is not ever going to play. Najera is slow and old and too short too. We still are desperate for a quality backup power forward. Did YI play well, beyond the stat line? Sounds like it was a good night at the ROCK. I think after we move to Brooklyn, we should pay six games a year and some pre-season at the ROCK, for the New Jersey fans, if any are left. Hope Proky’s meeting with NBA folks have gone well. WE NEED YOU PROKY! Wish you could play Power Forward!! GO NETS!

I agree frank is the worst coach in the nba.

i am fine with bobby simmons getting some playing time but know your matchups. he could have guarded gallinari when in the game not jordan hill.

cdr needs to come off the bench and be our jr smith or ben gordon. instant offense.

lee needs to be aggressive. i hate that he doesnt take over sometimes and get up some shots.

twill can get to the rack whenever he wants!!! what is he waiting for?

lopez needs a big man coach immediately or we are going to waste his talent. roy rogers isnt doing the job. he still doesnt know how to pass out of a double team or run a pick and roll.

coaching on this team is atrocious.

cdr is saying so if you read between the lines. he had to be the one to take the team and yell at them in the locker room.

cdr is team leader as of today!!!!! give him the captain patch.

The Nets were fun to watch at the end b.c they competed and went hard. I like the rotation at the end, with Harris of course. It will be good. You cannot play Yi at the end as he is too slow, cannot defend, is a liability and most importantly is bad under pressure. Soft hands. Tentative moves. Simmons is not the ideal, but is so much better on both ends.

by joe on Oct 22, 2009 7:02 AM EDT reply actions

This team is going to be awful. I failed to see what kind of offense the Nets were running last night??? If Frank is fired midseason it would be a blessing for this team. The one thing we have to be grateful for is that CDR, Lee, and Williams all get significant minutes, but I dunno why the offense isn’t run through the low post. Get the defense to commit to double teaming Lopez and then attack from the wings.

CDR and T-Will continue to impress.

2nd Rd Fodder my. CDR plays harder than any other person on this team and shows consistency. I like the fact that he barked at the team in the locker room. Leaders just don’t call off trees, they are born and they seize the oppurtunity. Devin Harris needs to take notes.

Yi is better served coming off the bench. Its a shame that we couldn’t get Dejuan Blair as well in this year’s draft, he would be perfect for this team. Next season we’ll be fine with our stellar set of wings and a legit PF to go up front. Until then, this team is going to have to fight not only the other team but the stupidity of the head coach just to crawl to a 20 win finish.

Great atmosphere last night and great effort from players like CDR, Courtney Lee and TWill. They made this a game in the 2nd half, b/c the 1st half was AWFUL! When the Nets cam back, the crowd was AMAZING! They were just waiting for the Nets to show them something. Now a “temporary” move to Newark is being discussed? Brooklyn supporters – be VERY afraid!

by MrT on Oct 22, 2009 8:02 AM EDT reply actions

CDR won’t get to the rim during the regular season like he did last night. Teams will shut that stuff down. He’s a backup 2 who can score but still looks out of control a lot and out of position on defense even more. He needs to learn to penetrate and dish more. I actually thought Simmons played pretty well. Lopez is our best player.

I will only say the more we lose the closer we are to change and change is what we need.

by Mr. Big on Oct 22, 2009 8:11 AM EDT reply actions

I’ve been saying all off season that LFrank would still be playing Hassell and Simmons over the young guys because he is a horrible, horrible lost coach… And don’t give me “longest tenured in the East” because that’s just code for “coaching a broke team that won’t pay anyone else to do it”. Hopefully Proky got 2 things on the table at the same time when he buys the team… his own ownership contract and Opie’s pink slip.

And Brook is looking crazy frustrated… Every time he’s all alone down low with no help at all, then I noticed once when CDR took a rebound right out of his hands. They need to get this guy some help or he’s gonna be the next one asking to not get his option picked up.

by jb on Oct 22, 2009 8:16 AM EDT reply actions

Fortunately the new owner won’t let his team be worst in NBA, all because there is no legit starting PF (Yi should be off bench).
There must be a good deal for a PF ASAP.

Nets won’t be able to get ANY good FA with current team. They have never in the past, why should that change?

There are nine draft picks for 3 years. Do you really think Nets will end up turning that into 9 bodies in next 3 years?

No team ever “tanks” the season before it begins just to get a top draft pick – especially with a Billionaire owner who wants to win.
“Tanking” is what Nets would be doing if they didn’t trade for a Legit. starting PF.

Nets will only be like 98% guaranteed to get a top 5 pick in draft with the team they now have. Knicks had a top pick too and it seems that their PF – Jordan Hill is a dud. Its pretty unlikely to get a draft pick who can play like 27 year old Boozer is right now and should be good for another 5 years.

Maybe some diehard fans, like on this site, will still support team, but not many others, when Nets become laughing stock of ESPN, etc.

@mikee21

THANK GOD! Someone who understands what this is all about! I seriously don’t get why people are so obsessed about making desperate moves that don’t fit the direction we have taken. Kiki doesn’t like bandaid solutions. His opinion on that won’t change because of new ownership… if Prokhorov ever buys the Nets… which is not a sure thing at all.

Nets are rebuilding… is that so hard to understand? I mean, every, EVERY team in the league has to rebuild at some point. That’s what the Nets are doing. That’s not tanking, PERIOD.

Those who don’t like it, please go root for the Celtics or the Lakers!

I thought this was a very entertaining preseason game. I just hope Frank was "experimenting" with his lineup, especially down the stretch, because if he was really looking to win this game it’s all over for us. Bobby Simmons should be sent to the glue factory, he’s done. Love watching C.Lee, CDR and T-Will. Lopez gotta chill out, pass when doubled. Yi not looking to bad. All in all lots of fun watching this work in progress.

by Mike on Oct 22, 2009 9:20 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Bobby Simmons did that bad. He played an energy role, was the pesky backup forward and got under peoples skin very well.

Sure, he’s got some kinks to iron out, but in this modern NBA and with the right amount of practice, Simmons could find a new niche in this league.

He needs to work on his post defense, which at 6 foot 6 is not going to be an easy task. He’s not going to be able to sky up and block a shot, so he needs to focus on his positioning. He’s got the muscles to pull it off.

Regardless, if Yi is our guy at PF, he should be in there at the end of games. Especially preseason games.

by Dirt on Oct 22, 2009 9:36 AM EDT reply actions

Would anyone take Simmons, Alston, and SWat? Give me one decent backup PF for any combo of them. So sick of hearing about Simmons throwing up bricks.

With his brick laying expertise, Simmons can help build the new arena in Brooklyn. Ouch…

CDR/ESPN Top 10 Play

Unpredictable – crowd pleaser. Signature CDR. He’s exciting to watch. Took me back to watching him in high school (first time I saw him jump over a player’s head to dunk!). There’s more to come I’m sure.

by Jeff on Oct 22, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

People have been talking about trading for Boozer but the Jazz are contenders so they are not going to give him up for scraps. I say we try to trade for Camby. He is in the final year of his deal and the Clips have an abundance of bigs in Kaman, Griffin, and Jordan. Camby would be more accepting of coming off the bench than Boozer would. He would be able to take some of the rebounding and defending the rim pressure that Brook must feel. I think the Clips would take Alston or Dooling and a second rounder. They would save a few million by doing that, something you know Sterling would appreciate.

by Chris2 on Oct 22, 2009 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

Yi is supposed to be somewhat of an offensive player and he has a 2-for-17 assist-to-turnover ratio. Nets have such a small margin for error that they cant afford to keep Yi on the floor. For some reason he cant rebound and is a terrible defender. Watching him play is so frustrating because he has no instincts. It seems like he’s always half a second slow in his reaction time. At this point i really think Swat or Battie should get the PF minutes.

If we cant get one of the big free agents next year, i would seriously consider going after David Lee. I think he’d be perfect for the Nets and would really help open things up for Brook.

by pawley on Oct 22, 2009 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

Najera, Boone, Simmons and Hassell but no Sean. Nobody wants to see these four losers play Lo Frank!!! It’s the preseason, could you at least have given this guy a chance? What a pathetic state of affairs.

by Isaac on Oct 22, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

I’ve been watching courtney lee since he was in orlando last year. If given the chance to be one of the top scoring options on this team, he and CDR could both give you 20+ a night. I’d just like to see Lee be a bit more mobile and aggressive in half court, because half the time he’s just waiting in the corner for something to happen. Seems to me right now he’s only either scoring in transition, or taking long jumpers. He’s also very very efficient, look at his shooting percentage throughout preseason and you will be impressed. I think if he gets to be more aggressive and moves around more, he can get serious buckets in addition to playing good D.

by Clement on Oct 22, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

Unfortunately, I think Nets fans can forget about SWat.

The time for LFrank to play him with significant minutes at PF was the very end of last year (didn’t make any difference) and during first few preseason games. Then if he still didn’t get back to at least his Rookie form, we would all agree to drop SWat. Instead, we still are justified to blame LFrank for how he has handled SWat.

Regarding Simmons, I don’t want to knock him too much for hope that he can be traded this year. He is nothing more than a 3 point shooter, but was one of the best last year, especially when coming off the bench. However, he should only be playing the SF position, except in rare cases at PF.
I think part of the reason for his poor shooting this year, is the new Nets are not use to finding him open at the Corners, where he hit most of his 3s last year. That should change when Harris is back.

by jerry25 on Oct 22, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

@Chris2
Camby is owed $9.5 million with expiring contract.
Alston is owed $5.2 million and SWat owed $1.6 million.
Maybe Thorn would get them to take SWat too and Clippers would still save 2.7 million, if that was allowed.

If anyone knows whether Camby is same player he was last year (great rebounder/shot blocker) that would certainly be an option, if other options weren’t possible.
BLopez would certainly appreciate Camby and it might take some pressure off of Yi, who would still have opportunity for earning big minutes.

If Dooling is going to have same year as last, I certainly would keep him, since Alston is going to contribute to “shoot first” mentality that Nets don’t need. Keeping both Alston and Dooling would hurt club as well as reduce minutes for the young Wings.

Unfortunately, there is little talk of Nets making trades, due to uncertainty over future at this time.
That shouldn’t be a reason for Nets fans to deny that a trade(s) needs to be made ASAP. We shouldn’t believe the BS coming from Kiki, that “we are rebuilding” so therefore management doesn’t have to try to compete for a playoff spot.

The analysts (ESPN) aren’t even considering that the Nets will very likely make a trade, when they declare Nets as worst team in NBA.

I have read everything written and published lately about our team from all over the place. There is a lot of fan interest and that is good. The crowd at THE ROCK is encouraging. The play of CDR and Lee and Williams is encouraging. Brook looks good and even YI has shown a little improvement. I am distrurbed by Devin’s absence and health issues, but Alston is a great backup and makes his teammates better when he is on the court. I look forward to Proky making it through the hoops he needs to jump through to get approved. I await the results of the most recent Brooklyn legal arguments. But what we really need on the court is a decent NBA 2009 power forward. YI hasn’t proved he can be a productive 30 minute player in this league, and our backup power forward options all just stink. Oh where oh where can our power forward be? GO NETS!

Name one thing wrong with the statement you quoted? Simmons can have impact; Yi has never been on the floor in crunch time in NJ or Milwaukee for a reason!!!!

It amazing how it always ends up being all about Yi. Enough already. Yi is the best we have and I suspect he might be as good or better then alot of other power forwards in the NBA.

Yeah, If Lopez was a better rebounder.scorer and defender, Yi would not look so bad. It’s Brook that’s the real problem. Lets go Yi.

Scratch that! A team that doesn’t win will not have three 20-pt scorers on a team. Don’t you know basketball? Tony Douglass been impressive for the Knicks too. Is he gonna average 15ppg during the reg. season? Come on, NBA basketball doesn’t work like that. Both Lee and CDR will have nights where they score over 20, but there will be plenty of nights where they struggle or get into foul troubles. And neither of them has shown the ability to knock it down when it matters most. They’re not even at the level of scorers like Al Harrington or Ben Gordon, so do not expect that they will suddenly defy all the logic and score more. That’s just stupid talking for naive fans.
