Friendly Rivalry at the Three

We thought the positional battle of the preseason would be between Chris Douglas-Roberts and Courtney Lee for the starting shooting guard spot. It turned out instead to be between CDR and Terrence Williams at the three. While the two are completely different in terms of style of play, they've quickly become the closest friends on the team, talking trash and keeping each other motivated.

The nod has to go to CDR to start the year. Our lineup needs all the scoring possible and CDR is the better scorer of the 2. Also, Twill is more likely to have an impact as a 6th man because he can do a little bit of everything.

Cdr is a scoring sg while twill is point foward… Two completely games.

by Claud on Oct 18, 2009 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

@ronnie

CDR…even with the best case scenario for him…which would be to average 15 ppg at best will not be enough to help this team. CDRs 15 ppg would be a whole more useful off the bench. TWill’s all around game is best suited in the starting lineup. Nets will need to create points from their defense. If they can do this, then it means THEY’RE ACTUALLY playing defense. Harris, Lee, and TWill can be a dominant defensive trio and that’s a great place to start with BLopez being a defensive anchor. If these four can get on the same page and be consistent on the defensive end of the floor, then the Nets might win a few more games. But getting on the same page is the key!!

You act is if Chris doesn’t play defense. No his D isn’t like Williams but Chris can keep his man in front of him he’s proved he has a all around game this preseason as well so please don’t talk as if CDR is only good for scoring not at all.

by mikee21 on Oct 18, 2009 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

TWILL HAS 2 START AT THE 3, LEE LOPEZ YI AND HARRIS OUR POINT ARE ALL SCORES, TWILL CAN PLAY POINT FOWARDS AND DISTRIBUTE, AND BE A JACK OFF ALL TRADES TWILL IS NOT A GOOD SCORER YET
thats fine, cdr nad hayes can score off the bench, cdr is the worst defender on the team, at least yi is tall long and can jump, haris lee twill yi lopez make up a very good defensive team and all can run and jump, if cdr is not scoring he adds nothing to the team, so if he comes and and makes shots great if not insert dooling or hayes, you cant rely on cdr, he is not a nba starting calliber player, we already have a backup at the 4 in yi you cant have to backup players and expect to win 30 games

That was the the craziest post I’ve read on this website really CDR is the worst defender on the Nets??? You don’t even believe that yourself. WoW !

by mikee21 on Oct 18, 2009 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

i would think CDR will should start..i didnt think he would be good at SF but he has shown in the preseason that he can play the position well..TWill is a good all around player but i think he is too inconsistent and would be better coming off the bench to start the season at least..for now start Harris, Lee, CDR, Yi and Lopez

by Sean on Oct 18, 2009 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

i think the 2 play similar defense and cdr’s offense puts him ahead of twill

by Njnetsfan on Oct 18, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

Cdr would be better off the bench…twill really moves the ball well setting up oportunies for evetuone on the floor. Cdr could help with bench scoring. I think twill would be the wise choice to start at 3

by Andy on Oct 18, 2009 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

CDR deserves to start and has earned it, but I think TWill will be a better fit on the 1st team. Lopez, Harris and Lee are all threats to score. We need more punch on the second unit. Dooling, CDR and Hayes will be all the offense we can get off the bench. The rest are role players….You need three guys on each team to score. Otherwise, the defense can focus on the two players that can score.

by johnfried on Oct 18, 2009 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

Terrence should start! Period.

Devin
Courtney
Terrence
Yi (This can change)
Brook

by JustinNJ on Oct 18, 2009 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

CDR is more of a 2 guard not a sf. He is better in the sixth man roll and adding some offense to the second unit. Jarvis Hayes should back up Terrence at the 3.

by JustinNJ on Oct 18, 2009 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

Yea I think that T-Will is a better fit with the first team. Cdr is a better scorer than twill, but the first unit already has Harris, lee, and lopez… Twill can help distribute the ball and set them up. Cdr has more of the sixth man qualities, an explosive scorer off the bench.

by AC24 on Oct 18, 2009 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

Very easy formula for a team who is in a rebuilding mode, however, I know this coaching staff will try to be too fancy and by mid-season we will have tried about thirty different lineups.

by JustinNJ on Oct 18, 2009 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

This is the new Brook and Ryan. I want to see the T-will and CDR show

by VC3 on Oct 18, 2009 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

CDR is a shooting guard. He deserves to start, but the compettiion should be with Courtney Lee. Has Lee proven that he’s a better scorer than CDR? NO, I do not think so.
CDR does not have the physical ability to play SF. He’s thin and it’d be a nightmare for him to match up with the typical SFs. In addition, CDR is not the rebounder TWill is, and with a weak frontline we need as much rebounding help from our SF as possible.
CDR has done great this preseason, but whether or not he should start is not regardless of position. I’m not even sure he’s a better (SF) than Hayes and even Simmons. This debate is position-depedent.

every on eloves the backup point gaurd cdr is a nd will be at best a 7 th man off the bench on a desnt team, no hops, no lateral movement no 3 point range doesnt pass well rebound steal, and he is slow he doesnt have to be doubled, im the bigest net fan but lets be truthful there is a reason he was picked 43 ,
LEE IS NOT A STAR AT BEST RIP HAMILTON,. yi is a good bACK UP 4/5 LOPEZ WILL BE A ALLSTAR SEVERAL TIMES AND HARIS WILL BE A TOP 5 PG FOR A WHILE.
SWAT AND BOONE WILL BLOSSOM INTO ROTATION PLAYERS SOMEWHERE ELSE,AWAY FROM FRANK,
HAYES NAJERA DOOLING RAFER BATTIE, HOPEEFULLY WILL BE TRADED TO CONTENDERS FOR 2 ND ROUND PICKS AND EXPIRING CONTRACTS,
SIMONS AND HASEL SHOULD BE TRADED OR TRADED FOR A GARBAGE EXCHANGE MAYBE LARRY HUGHES FOR SIMMONS,
WITH FRANK WE WONT WIN 30, WITH A GOOD COACH WE CONTENTD FOR A 8 TH SEED AND BOONE SWAT BLOSSOM HERE

The reversible jersey should be:

CDR vs LeBron !!

it’s better than Hayes plan…

by jarkid on Oct 19, 2009 3:09 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know what you guys are talking about. This is what’s gonna happen… DH, Lee, CDR, Yi and Lopez will start… Alston will backup DH, Dooling will back up Lee, Hayes will sub for CDR and i don’t know and i dont really care what happens after that because as far as im concerned, the back ups 4 and 5 are all losers and surprisingly, im still in love with SWill, i still want the management to give him a shot.

Now, depending on their health, TWill might be able to see some time BUT NOT what you guys are hoping for, based on your comments here. HE will NOT start NOR a role player, the only way it’s gonna happen is if someone goes down and they needed a replacement, his time is next year. I know Kiki said that the young guys are to play this year but that doesn’t pertain to TWill.

Alston might see less time as the game goes on and Dooling might back DH more. CDR and Lee will get most of the work esp. in the second half.

I liked this article. Shows the competitive spirit of both CDR and TWill. They apparently have enough self confidence to be able to appreciate and challenge each other’s abilities. I sure hope that’s infectious for other Nets players.

Interesting comment CDR makes about Sean and TWill: "He and Sean Williams are the two best athletes on the team — by far." I still feel Sean’s superior athleticism is underutilized on this Nets team.

Brook doesn’t understand their patois. Somehow that doesn’t surprise me.

by Jeff on Oct 19, 2009 8:45 AM EDT reply actions

CDR and TWILL are easily my two favorite players on this team next to Brook because they play like men.

In a perfect world, I would have CDR come off the bench for the scoring punch and T-Will starting at the three for his ability to defend the perimeter as well as his point forward ability so he can create for others. Maybe with a guy like T-Will in the line up looking to make his teammates better it will help Yi out, since it’s quite clear now that Devin Harris has no clue about making others better. But I don’t know if Terrence is ready to start yet. Either way, I am pleased with both of these kids and I hope they continue to push each other because they are important for the future of this roster.

And at first I was hard on him because I thought he was being a big baby for crying about leaving Orlando, but I really like Courtney Lee now as well. Solid shooter, good defender, he runs the floor and he can attack the basket. We are set at the two and the three with these kids. Kudos to Rod Thorn!!

I agree with Mr. Dollar Bills analysis. T-Will can be Yi’s caddy on the court, helping him with rebounding and defense. CDR is better suited with the second unit. When Harris plays he takes shots away from the whole team. The only one he passes to is Lopez. You rarely see Harris drive to the hoop and dish off to a open player. He is always looking for his shot first. Yi might be better suited with the second unit also. With the first unit Yi is the fourth or fifth option. The problem then is who starts at PF.

1) Harris

6) Alston
7) CDR
8) Hayes
9) Yi
10) SWAT/Battie
