Nets Come Back and Beat Kings Without Harris

The Nets got their first win of the season without Devin Harris ... sort of. Harris logged 19 minutes, but with his hamstring still bothering him, he couldn't play in the second half against the Kings Monday night. And the Nets trailed by as many as 13 early in the third quarter. But behind a big period from Yi Jianlian, the Nets cut the lead to two heading into the fourth. A 10-0 run put the Nets up nine with three minutes to go and they held on for the win. Yi had his best game as a Net, finishing with 22 points on 8-14 shooting, 13 boards and two blocks. Vince Carter led the Nets with 29 points, adding nine rebounds and seven assists. Kevin Martin scored 25 points on 8-9 shooting in the first half for the Kings, but made just three of his 12 shots after halftime. The Nets now have their first home winning streak of the 2008-09 season. Harris hopes to play Wednesday, but says that Friday is more likely. The Nets play in Milwaukee Friday--Harris' hometown.

finally a solid game for Yi… it was about time..

Hack-A-Boone??! come on Frank Just take him out!! You are the worst coach ever… we are lucky BOone was hitting some FT’s….

VC saved us by making that dunk + 3 point play! go VC!!

DH is out but for how long??

Brook was not playint too well buts that was okay!

SImmons also hitting some threes…

DOoling was solid too! key 3pointer

Alright, now we HAVE to sign Eddie Gill and make a move for Gerald Wallace. Let’s go!

Did you also notice KD cursing Nets fans who were booing. I guess Nets fans need to start booing from the beginning so that Nets think they play on the road.

by Tony on Jan 5, 2009 10:02 PM EST reply actions

Wow, Nets fans can be so fickle…They cheer when Boone gets a block, then boo him horrendously when he airballs a free throw….and then cheer again when coach brings him out towards the end.

THATS WHAT YI NEEDS TO DO IS HUSTLE PLAYS AND STOP SETTLING FOR 3S BUT YEA THAT WAS A GOOD GAME AND A NICE DUNK BY VC

Hark! There has been an YI sighting! Great defense and hustle won this game. We needed this confidence boost without Harris in the lineup even if it was the Kings. Nice win guys! Keep the energy level high and there is no reason you can’t win every game at home.

KEVIN MARTIN IS CRAZY

by M Jerz on Jan 5, 2009 10:05 PM EST reply actions

With Yi, it seems his problem is confidence. Today he did all, drove against the defense, hit long jumpers and rebounded plus that main hustle play that ended up with VC 3 giving 5 point in that possession.

Frank needs to encourage him to play freely irrespective of his mistakes.

by Tony on Jan 5, 2009 10:05 PM EST reply actions

Man!!! I thought it was another blowout loss at home again in the 3rd quarter after losing by 13 points…fortunately YI kept the game close in the 3rd quarter!!!

Please don’t vote for Yi and embarrass him and Nets. That also will take chances away from VC and DH, especially VC.

Yi might be there one day but not now.

by Tony on Jan 5, 2009 10:12 PM EST reply actions

They won this game with good defense. Yi finally played agressively going to the basket. I thought it was really horrible that the Net fans booed Josh Boone at the foul line. C’mon, he’s one of your own.

You do realize that Devin is 13th in the league in assists at 6.6 per game right? You also realize we’re 0-4 when he doesn’t play right? He’s also number 16 in effeciency.. VC is 29 Tony Parker is 30 and J Kidd is 35th just to give you perspective. So yea I think you’re the only one that thinnks their better without Devin.

by pringshia on Jan 5, 2009 10:30 PM EST reply actions

Nice game by Yi specially the rebounds. Defense was much better and offense more balance.
Boone is really not dependable on last minutes , I hope next time Frank use a timeout to pull him out there. NETS got lucky Yi got a rebound.
Let’s hope Yi can follow up next game against Memphis.
Rest Harris for a week and keep these new energy developed.
Good job by NETS and of course coach Frank too

by JuliusIrving on Jan 5, 2009 10:31 PM EST reply actions

If anyone heard what keyon dooling said in the postgame about the boos please listen. He said that the boos dont help and it would be alot more effective if the fans came out and cheered despite the struggles. Even though thats stating the obvious some nets fans dont seem to get it. Short term the boos might have actually helped them.. but in the long run the nets need to be able to rely on their fans for motivation and support. That means trying to cheer them back into a game not boo.

by VC15 on Jan 5, 2009 10:33 PM EST reply actions

Devin can pass, he threw in 7 dimes in 19 minutes of play. It’s when he keeps passing to himself 7, 8, 9 times in a row. That’s when I get antsy.

I’d like to see Devin click, Yi click, Vince click, and Brook click all in one game. That would be one heck of a game, hopefully that happens further down the road. Especially during our tough stretch coming up soon.

Somebody call a priest cause Yi is possessed. It must have been the good calls he’d been getting all night. He gained confidence from knowing the refs were on his side and decided to show up on every play.

Way to hang in there and show up in the crucial moments, right when the team needed to peak offensively and defensively. Great game!

VC15, I did hear Keyon after the game. As I said earlier, I thought it was horrible that the fans booed Josh at the foul line. It does get frustrating some times when they play really bad, but you just can not boo your home team. It’s not acceptable.

back from the game. great win and it was a great TEAM win. to be honest when i saw keyon starting over devin i thought we would lose. Martin was on pace to hit 50 and without devin i couldnt see us overcoming that. thankfully that is why you play the game.

*Harris made some nice passes in his limited time. i hope playing today did not make his hammy worse. he said possibly vs the grizz and more likely he will play friday vs rj and the bucks.

*Brook struggled as rookies do. he missed a lot of high percentage shots and you saw he got frustrated as rookies get. this game and the miami game are big learning games for him. he will be fine. if he made even half of his gimmes we would have been in a better position in this game and not down big, but boone had his back and played well.

*Simmons took the role that yi used to have where he would start but when the game is on the line he is on the bench. hit a couple of 3’s but nothing much

*Vince really stepped up 2nd half. he knew devin was out and it was his show to run. he created for others and put the ball in the hoop. very very solid game for the captain. not to mention a HUGE dunk. from my seat i could see the lane open like the parting of the seas and jumped up because i knew what was coming and it was a vinsane dunk. it got the place rocking thats for sure. turning point imo

*Yi was fabulous. why was he so successful? well i think it is because he mixed his game up. he was not a spot up shooter today. he went in the post, dribbled to the basket and hit those open shots when he got them. just an unbelievable game where we NEEDED him to step up because devin was out and brook was playing like a rookie. he was due for a big game and this was a big game for him. we can only hope he continues this against the grizz, bucks and thunder.

*Dooling could be our unsung hero this year. its close between him and hayes, but dooling just adds a great dimension to our team. he brings a lot of energy on both ends, got that steal which was a clear path foul, attacks the basket, hits the 3 and gets in the lane and makes plays for others (hes found boone a couple times recently under the basket for 2). oh and he said in the post game that i saw that he wants us to Cheer to help them and Booing does nothing. but thats another topic

*Hayes was efficient tonight. he is the one who ends up on the floor in the final minutes over simmons because he is active on defense and is more consistent with his jumper whether it is from 2 or 3 whereas bobby only hits the 3 with any type of regularity.

*Boone was active again. he still cant make free throws and when he shot that airball it looked like vince was upset that the crowd started to boo and waved his hands to the crowd in disgust basically saying oh shut up, whatever – if you know what i mean. despite the hack-a-boone and missing some, but also making 1 outta 2 he fought for rebounds and played well with brook playing so bad. he picked up quick fouls in the first quarter, but he played smarter. good game for him

*Najera finally made some impact plays. got his hands active and he was communicating a lot on the defensive end i could see pointing to brook and boone and the others to get their man. he still needs to get his jumper down and i’d like to see him take some 15-17 footers instead of every shot being a 3. take some midrange shots at least early to try and get a rhythm going.

i thought with devin out that CDR would get a shot in the 2nd half but trent got the time. i wana see CDR get some good PT but it will come.

good energy from the crowd. they did the T-Shirt toss early in the game AND before the 4th. i guess they wanted to try and get the crowd into it earlier maybe to make us play better at home. well it didnt work because we had another bad first half and needed a 2nd half comeback to win.

Peter Rabbit performed at halftime and he performed at the playoffs a couple years ago. very talented and cool to watch. i wish they had more talent performers than music or singers. showcase some other talents out there in america. i mean we are in the NY market there is talent all over the place, cant someone find it?

by xcalibur on Jan 5, 2009 10:52 PM EST reply actions

LETS GO…….. Sad to hear about Harris but at least yi finally stepped up when he had to it unfortunate that it won’t be consistent. Carter is comfortable handling the load of the team, they never gave up and again used the fans boo’s as motivation to win the game at the end. If all it takes is to boo the team in order for them to win then let the boos keep on coming. lol

If the nets can get back to a respectable record, KD has to be considered for 6th man of the year. Not only was he chasing K-Mart version2 all over the court, he was making big offensive plays. He is looking like the hardest working Net right now.

the nets won the game tonight because of the defense and hustle provided by Yi, Simmons and Najera.

by matt on Jan 5, 2009 11:09 PM EST reply actions

A must win against a really bad team. Even without Harris for half the game, this was a team we HAD TO BEAT. I just loved watching YI tonight, he hit shots, and played aggressively around the basket. It was a miracle! Did you notice that Harris had 7 assists in the 18 minutes he played, playing with a bad hammy. Hayes played well, Dooling and Boone too. AM worried about Lopez, hope he didn’t get psyched out by DWADE’s stuffed against him on Saturday night. Lots of empty seats at IZOD, and they booed Dooling. Idiots. He is playing really good ball. The Fans tonight were idiots. GO NETS

by Paul Erstein on Jan 5, 2009 11:56 PM EST reply actions

You know why Yi was effective? Because they finally gave him the ball at 15 feet on an Iso. THey been playing him like a small forward with the dribble drive and the three point shot. Frank finally used Yi well.

by biggie on Jan 6, 2009 12:06 AM EST reply actions

Dear Nets fans,
More specifically, any Nets fan who boo’s, or continues to hate the coach. Keep it to yourself. Frank is a genius. I am so happy that Dooling booed right back at you.

Anyone who thinks Frank should have took Boone out is a fool. He gave the man confidence, which is something that the fans certainly don’t give. I applaud it, and I think its great to see a coach says you know what, screw everyone else, your our Center, and we are going to win even when the other team wants to cop out like that.

This is my official last post on this site, I cant take all the Nets bashing anymore.

by ben on Jan 6, 2009 12:21 AM EST reply actions

Nets have not done anything special. VC did what he had to do and the bench guys gave great support. Yi finally played up to his potential…it’s only one game…so lets not bash Yi to the ground or make him sound like the next Dirk. If Yi can show consistency then we can start appreciating him…but it’s too early right now.

The Nets have only taken care of business. We need to continue taking care of business on Wed against Memphis and Fri against the Bucks. Critical 3 games coming up and everyone will be needed if Harris is out for a few games.

Go Nets!

by Sharj on Jan 6, 2009 12:38 AM EST reply actions

@Tim

Please continue to post on this site. TheNets need people like you. I can understand why fans criticize the players when they are not playing well. But there are always some low-life’s, disguising as fans, keep bashing other human beings not matter what. Lives must be really meaningless for them and they are certainly not worthy to be Nets fans. It’s a great TEAM win tonight and just enjoy the moment. Hope there are more to come.

by Bill Chan on Jan 6, 2009 12:42 AM EST reply actions

like I said! Without harris holding the ball for 90% of the freaking time our young players can score! Harris is a scoring point that will only destroy this team like AI. I always hate scoring point guard!

by lol on Jan 6, 2009 1:06 AM EST reply actions

Yi always played great without scoring point like harris and mo william. Remember his largest score in the season? That was against Miami when Harris was hurt and went out for 3 games.Same thing with Anderson, I watched Anderson play in college and I always like his game but he is turning into a 3 pointer like YI.

by lol on Jan 6, 2009 1:09 AM EST reply actions

I hope Brooklyn’s fans will treat the Nets better.

by Utahsucks on Jan 6, 2009 1:34 AM EST reply actions

Sticking with Boone was extremely dangerous at the end of 4th. We’re lucky that we had a big cushion. That hack’o Boone completely stalled our offense, and we got 1 pt in each possession at best. If Nets were only up by a few points, keeping him out there would be extremely questionable and could’ve costed the game. Something to learn from in the future; even a Western conference team knows how to exploit our weakness.

by biggie on Jan 6, 2009 1:36 AM EST reply actions

Yeah our bigs won’t probably play well with Harris at point. Once Harris drives to the hoop, if he can’t get a shot off he would pass it to the perimeter. They’d just do a lot of standing around when that happens. Harris doesn’t look to make plays for other guys, he looks to score. He gets his assists only when he can’t get a shot.

by dominic on Jan 6, 2009 1:54 AM EST reply actions

Btw, Carter logged in 120 mins since Friday night. That’s like playing time of four games for other players in this league. Must be tired!

by biggie on Jan 6, 2009 2:03 AM EST reply actions

yeah that is what I been saying! Our young players will stand around run up and down the court for 10 min and never get to touch the ball. Who is going get hot with that kind of game plan? Some time even vince Carter get cold because of harris. Harris always throw some weak lay-up over and over again when his teammate is wide open. Every teams know that harris will hold the ball 90% of the time. You stop him, you’ll stop the team.

by lol on Jan 6, 2009 2:26 AM EST reply actions

There is no excuse for Nets fans booing their own team. It was horrible when they booed Collins. It’s nasty when they boo Boone when he’s at the free throw line (especially when he’s playing so well). Is anyone stupid enough to think that booing a guy at the line is going to help him make the next FT?

by rayray on Jan 6, 2009 4:30 AM EST reply actions

Hey Ben—-OK, so I was wrong. We have won two home games that I thought we might lose. I am happy to have been wrong about 16-20. Let’s home I am wrong a few more times in this stretch, because the next group after this, is KILLER. It is against really good teams, like Boston twice. Let’s home we steal a couple of the NEXT FIVE after these few easier ones that are left. GO NETS, and PLEASE don’t boo our guys at IZOD!

by Paul Erstein on Jan 6, 2009 5:02 AM EST reply actions

wow Yi wow
Keep it up big guy.
I think since china is wondering if he deserves all star status
Yi has something to prove!!!
He was aggressive all night.
Lets all pray he keeps that attitude and it runs over into Brook Lopez and the rest of the team.
Please use CDR at the PG spot please!!!!

by DJ HeavyDuty on Jan 6, 2009 7:41 AM EST reply actions

I agree with 101 and dominic. Devin has been holding onto the ball a little too much. Not to take anything from him. He is a great player and has been helping the team with his scoring. But that’s not what a PG for. We need someone to control the tempo, execute the offensive game plan and makes everyone on the team BETTER.

by Bill Chan on Jan 6, 2009 9:17 AM EST reply actions

Yi will have to play like that every game the rest of the season to deserve a slot in the All Star Game.

by Krakista on Jan 6, 2009 9:45 AM EST reply actions

About Harris: I think that he is getting better at distributing and passing. His assists are going up surely. Remember this is also a brand new team. Harris didn’t know anyone and hasn’t had experience with the team. And Harris himself is developing still himself, he is only 25, and this is the first time he is running a team with this amount of freedom and responsibility. I believe he will only get better at facilitating. Remember also that in Dallas their style of play was something else completely. And also that the more Harris plays with this group the more he’ll understand when to pass to whom and in what position his teammates are most effective in.

by me on Jan 6, 2009 9:47 AM EST reply actions

Good win. I’ve booed at times this season, but certainly did not boo at Josh Boone’s FT shooting last night. He needs confidence. I hope more people continue to come out and cheer this team.

For those who haven’t been to many games this year…try and get to a game…the team and the fans need more help!

The crowds the past 5 games or so have been very into it and I hope it continues.

by Matt H on Jan 6, 2009 10:07 AM EST reply actions

I agree with Matt H. Booing sloves nothing. Dolling, YI, Carter, and Boone were all big last night.

by Hey you on Jan 6, 2009 11:07 AM EST reply actions

I bet everyone notice Yi stick his elbow and got a technical. For me that is a positive sign for him that he is getting it that in NBA he needs to be rough enough so he doesn’t ge outhustled. Before that happen I saw he got swap a few times and did not get a call. He got irked and showed some roughness.
He is learning to get physical there, watch out.

by JuliusIrving on Jan 6, 2009 11:24 AM EST reply actions

No Yi bashing. Did anybody say how good Captain Carter is playing? he is awesome

by iiii on Jan 6, 2009 11:47 AM EST reply actions

what do you know? Another convincing win at HOME! without Devin Harris.

I admit I was very nervous because I thoguht Kevin Martin was going for 50. I mean he could not miss. It was crazy.

But thankfully Yi and Vince stepped it up, and everybody contributed, even when it was the little things.

Did not appreciate the boos, and at least we now know that the Nets don’t like being booed.

I mean it’s the first time this season we’ve had a two game winning streak at home.

It was a good win, and now we got to move on to Memphis.

Not bad Yi.

by R.M on Jan 6, 2009 2:01 PM EST reply actions

I think Harris should stay out until the Boston road game. Carter has being leading this crew quite nicely. If Carter doesn’t make the allstar game this year, they should rename the Allstar game to:Sometimes The Real Allstars ARE OVERLOOKED.

by MJT on Jan 6, 2009 3:50 PM EST reply actions

for all u guys hating on Yi now do u see what i mean

look it is still clear Yi is not close to having that type of production on a night to night basis but there is a definate reason towards his great game

first off with devin out, Frank actually looked to post Yi up and run the offense thru him and guess what IT WORKED! there was a 10 possession stretch in the 3rd quarter where Yi caught the ball in the post and good things started happening we got high % shots on every attempt and probably scored on at least 6 or 7 of those trips

frank needs to learn that Yi is most effective in the mid-post where he can catch the ball, face up and make a move, he looked pretty comfortable with the ball considering the limited time he has had there this season. hes got a nice turnaround jumpshot, is capable of blowing by his defender or finishing with jump hook in the lane.

yi is not a jumpshooter, when he scored he put alot more effort in on hustle plays and defense, he looked like a complete player yesterday

by Ion the Eagle on Jan 6, 2009 6:16 PM EST reply actions

The guys most bashed on this site by the haters were the heroes tonight. Everyone is rightly mentioning Yi, and if he can show that confidence and diversity of game on a regular basis, he will be a good NBA player. Boone and Najera played well too.

LFrank made a very gutsy call in playing Boone at the end. We won, and that will pay off down the road, as the kid needs more self-confidence to perform like he can. Playing Hassell worked out too, as he shut down Martin. The guy was amazing in the first half—I don’t recall him even hitting the rim on any of his shots—and then disappeared until the very end of the game. If he goes for another 45 like he was heading, we lose without Devin’s scoring.

by jabez on Jan 6, 2009 6:57 PM EST reply actions

Devin is a good player but Vince is the LEADER of this team. He has changed so much since his Raptors days. Devin has much to learn in the area to make his teammates better. Only then that he will become a great player and lead the Nets to the top.
