Nets Can't Stop Hawks

The Nets lost for the eighth time in their last nine games Friday night in Atlanta, unable to provide any resistance in the second half for Joe Johnson and the Hawks. The Nets scored the first seven points of the game, but the first half was close throughout. The Hawks took control with an 11-3 run to end the third quarter and the Nets couldn't cut the lead to anything less than seven points in the fourth. The Nets had five players in double-figures, but shot just 40 percent from the field and scored just 35 points in the second half. Atlanta was led by Johnson's 29 points and shot 51 percent. Devin Harris and Vince Carter had 20 and 18 points respectively, but combined to shoot just 11-31. Ryan Anderson added 17, including 3-3 from deep. Bobby Simmons and Jarvis Hayes combined for 4 points on 2-12 shooting. Over the last five games, the two small forwards are shooting 22-61 or 36%.

So we get 4 points from the small forward spot and couldn’t hit a shot in the 3rd again huh?

That was a horrible horrible game. Doesn’t our offense just look brilliant? We should all give Frank credit for installing this amazing genius offense!
Also, wasn’t it a great idea to have Hayes in the whole fourth quarter when he was clearly sucking it up the whole game?
But I digress…clearly our offensive and defensive schemes are brilliant and Harris and Vince Carter suck. If only we had real stars and players that could actually play! For shame…such a waste of coaching talent!
Did you see how terrible Atlantas offense looked? They had players running around WITHOUT THE BALL!!!! what a waste of energy! Players should save their energy for running around WITH the ball. And did you see how Atlanta was passing the ball all the time? Why the hell would you do that? Wouldn’t you prefer to just put it in JJ’s hands and make him do everything?
I can’t believe they actually won and we lost!
And that defense is something huh? We are SO good at keeping our man on the perimeter in front of us. The coaching staff must really work hard on defense.
Well, another great waste of brilliant strategy.
Oh, and putting Dooling in all though he was injured, and keeping him in there, when one could have at least tried to give CDR the opportunity was almost as brilliant as force feeding Hayes minutes when he was bricking everything and just looking foolish all game.
And those adjustments were killer! We really adjusted our game in the third quarter like we always do! And we sure caught Atlanta off guard!
Geez…I can’t wait to watch tomorrows game…
And VC sure showed JJ whoes a true all star and deserving that reserve role eh?…

The 3rd quarter slump is here since Frank took the Head coach job so basically 5 years .
Don’t tell me it’s just a coincidence

Oh yeah! And the zone was absolutely brilliant! We didn’t let their back court heat up from out side…which would have given them confidence to attack the rim…
…I just hate it that our team is so well coached and so prepared…if only we had good players!

ok there better be a trade happening soon.. this team is going down fast!!!, Someone needs to tell carter to STOP shooting and passing and TAKE OVER THE GAME,
You dont have to be a passer in order to become a leader…
You can start taking over games

Brooke and Anderson were the only bright spots this night.
Ship is sunk. These guys don’t care. Only two people who look like they give a damn are the two rookies. Can’t play defense, can’t get a good shot, Jarvis ends up with the ball as time is running down…It’s been years of inconsistency, years of strange rotations, years of us BEING THE MOST BRILLIANT DEFENSIVE TEAM CAUSE OUR COACH IS A DEFENSIVE MASTERMIND! ARGH! C’MON! Don’t management see! Are they SO blind! Watching this team…you gotta be a masochist! You care about the team, and the team only cares about saving some money. They think Nets fans are DUMB. I don’t care how many time Rod Thorn says Frank is doing a great job, the fact is, on the ground, where it matters, in third quarters, for example, and as a whole, the mentality, the strategy, the ‘identity’, the defense (schemes), the offense (schemes), the utilizing of the talent that Thorn does bring in, WE ARE LOOKING LIKE A JOKE!
Maybe he’s developing Brooke and Yi, FINE, but what’s he gonna do with that develop talent? Orchestrate them into a winning unit, with an identity? A strategy? A passion?
YOU THINK WE’RE IDIOTS?

The Nets play terrible man to man. As bad as they are now they were worse earlier in the year. Simmons and Anderson can’t move their feet and Devin is letting people penetrate too easily. Even when they weren’t in Zone Joe Johnson took over the game.

@opies uncle: In the second half simmons actually hit a shot, next thing I know he’s gone and Hayes is in, bricking and bricking…and you know what…he was in for all practical purposes till the end.
All teams miss open shots some nights. But they find ways to win or at least keep it competitive. Either Defense, creating turnovers, getting to the line, something. Not just continuing to brick shots. At some point a team loses it’s rythm and there’s no way they’re hitting those shots. That’s when you need to change your strategy and ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK! and DEFEND DEFEND DEFEND! We are not the only team in the league that has scoring droughts and struggles to hit shots sometimes. We just don’t do anything else even close to remotely good that we can survive it when we go through that.
Besides, there is a difference between an open shot and a rythm shot. We may have had open looks, but by and large they were in akward situations, almost by mistake.

I will give up on this team, they don’t improve this team at all.
The coach can’t teach defense, that’s the major reason we want to fire him.

I know, we’ve wanted that for years now…You think that when we had JKidd and VC and RJ we could have gotten a coach who was a little better suited for them, even just a little. If they didn’t do it then, no way they’re doing it now.
Good night.

You’re right. But watching this game turned on a few plays. 5 minutes to go in the 3rd and it was tied. Then Joe Johnson took over. We had 5 players in double figures. But the stars are the ones that have to take over in the clutch or when they see the game getting away. VC didn’t shoot well, Devin was missing his free throws and Jarvis was not only missing open shots but he was turning the ball over. And Keyon and Najera gave us nothing. can’t win like that no matter who the coach is. I’d like to see a change though. But they were right there until Johnson went off.

The Hawks are not getting swept by the Nets.
Get over it!
This is a game Joe Johnson needed to prove himself, because he proved very little in the first three losses. That’s what an all-star is supposed to do—least wining one out of four against the Nets. No?
by biggie on Jan 30, 2009 10:48 PM EST reply actions
On a positive note. Anderson looked good and put up 17 points. Brook was hitting his jumper and had some strong moves inside and put up 15 in limited minutes. If this season is about developing the rookies it’s working. And if Yi comes back like he left it can only help. CDR will get his turn.
by Opie's Uncle on Jan 30, 2009 10:53 PM EST reply actions
Screw it…too fumed to sleep…
So I’ll say this because it was a hot topic lately: I saw 1 player who looked like an all star tonight and his name was Joe Johnson. Anybody who was whining about a certain player making it or not making to the Allstar should just stop.
@Biggie: Oh, so it’s okay!!! Of course!! Silly me!! It’s okay to lose because JJ needed to prove himself and because it would be wrong to sweep the Hawks!! OK,sorry for being all sarcastic. But I think that JJ had a good game against us already this year. I think he had a 29 or 30 point game against us this year already once. No? I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure I’m right.
The way I see it is like this. The Dribble Drive Offense is basically an offense where Frank is relying solely on his stars. The offense isn’t set up to utilize anybody else’s strength. It was a good offense for getting DH into the All star game. And it is an offense where Frank basically doesn’t have to coach or call plays or whatever, just give all the freedom and responsility to your star and hope they can give you 30 point nights most of the time.
Opies uncle: you’re right, but again, you have to admit that the overall strategy didn’t really change from beginning to end. So it was only a matter of time before JJ was going to figure out how to go off on us. And it was only a matter of time before the players were going to give up.

Opies Uncle, You’re right. Brooke was looking good, and looked like he was going to dominate the game, had a real quick and effortless looking 8 points. Just that damn foul trouble. And Anderson looked real good. I am really really happy about those two. If we can get some sort of development for CDR going and if Yi continues somewhat like he left out, then it will be very very encouraging. For the future. That being said, I still think we need someone who can take all this talent and utilize to it’s maximum potential, and looking at it, Brooke, Yi, Harris are all such different talents and skill sets, it is not an easy job to juggle. I just hope this team does what’s right and get’s the peronel that these players and us fans deserve. None of us would even be here if we didn’t think we had a couple, or several rather, really special players. In fact, looking back a the last three seasons, it still shocks me how little we managed with the players we had.
I realize that a big part of that winning attitue and making your teammates better and confident was Kidd, but I also realize a big part of that was Byron. After Byron left, and the team started reconstruction, that part of the NJNets was never the same.

Putting Chris Douglas-Roberts in with 1 minute, 46 seconds to go in a game where the Nets are down by 9? Would it have undermined coach’s “strategy” to have given CDR a few more minutes in the 4th quarter? Will there ever be an adjustment when it could have positive impact? It’s almost like coach looks forward to those illustrious post-game analyses that let him explain why the Nets lost.
by Jeff on Jan 30, 2009 11:49 PM EST reply actions
For all the Yi-bashers, before Yi was out, you made him to be the reason for every loss. But what happens now, 2-9 ? I don’t mean he would have won some of those games single-handedly. I just think that it is ridiculous to blame ONE particular player for any loss when it is a team game.
by Bill on Jan 31, 2009 12:01 AM EST reply actions
I am just offering a change of perspective. If you’re a Hawks fan, it wouldn’t be acceptable to get swept by the Nets. If you’re an all-star like JJ, you gotta perform better than he’s had in the last three losses. It’s just that simple! You ripped VC for having a bad game tonight, and tried to justify JJ’s all-star selection over him on this game alone? You better rewatch the first three head-to-head matchups again.

For some reason Frank does not like to call time out to stop the bleeding in the end of the third quarter, when atlantic and toronto made there lead. I think he has to called time out. Change the line up or something, you can’t let the nets down 8 to 10 points going into the fourth.
I agree is time for Frank to go, and would someone please tell Devin to pass the ball on the fastbreak, anderson was open for a dunk or layup. He had to miss and Atlanta scores on there side of the fastbreak, that’s a 4 point turn around.

this team now has the mentality of the coach. losers. they have no fight. this is the nets pattern in every game. they either come out and get an early lead go into the locker room and come out flat the rest of the game or they battle back in the 4th quarter and lose.
we havent had maybe 2 blow outs this season, we have no killers on the roster that want to destroy the other team and the coach doesnt instill that in his team at all.
this is not good. just look across the river and see what a real coach does to change a teams thinking. frank has to go. no recycled coaches either unless its jeff van gundy or avery johnson. devin will love that hahaha!
i want mark jackson here. he tells it like it is and has played the game. after these interviews i can tell devin can care less about frank.

This is real Nets: they are underwhelming at 3 positions. They went into the year praying for 20 wins, with a starting 3, 4, 5 of Boone, Yi, Simmons. Come on: that is a bad team.
Bright side: Frank has been able to develop Yi to a decent player. He has developed Lopez to a potential dominant player. He has developed Harris to one of the better impact players in the league. He is developing Anderson into a decent role player. Wasn’t this the goal? We are way ahead of schedule thanks to Harris and Lopez coming along. CDR may never get it. But next year will be brighter. And maybe the chip will come off his shoulder and he’ll play – but whose time is he taking? Productive players like VC, Harris, Dooling? I don’t think so.
By trade deadline Nets should shed some salary (Swift) and unleash VC for a deal that can bring us youth and picks and salary flexibility.
Why moan? This is what we are. It is fun to watch Harris, Lopez, and Anderson develop. It’s fun to see Dooling and Harris with freedom to play. But I see few wins ahead: Lottery baby! Is the next draft good?
by john on Jan 31, 2009 8:42 AM EST reply actions
Loss again. blame it on Frank . Since Yi injury, he could not do anything to make this team compete better. They are still running the same play, which I suspect the rival coaches knows how to neutralize already. Stop Devin penetration, make him an outside shooter or someone else. This is what I believe the other teams are doing and it’s working.
A lot will say that maybe Harris , Carter and others are becoming one dimensional players, but I believe the coach is also a one dimensional coach, still the same plays or shall I say the same style. There is nothing really wrong with that, but if opposing teams figured it out then your chances of making it work, is limited.
Time for a change, not necessarily the coach, but with a stubborn coach like him, who I believe is still thinking he is putting this franchise in a great position to be competetive base on his solid experience (self-proclaimed), I don’t think there will be a solid development by the end of the season.
by JuliusIrving on Jan 31, 2009 9:59 AM EST reply actions
I got know idea why Hayes was in there so late, 1 for 8?? Towards the end Harris wouldn’t even make eye contact with his teammates. He try to penetrate, throw up a waffle, pray for a foul and if he got one he’d make one of two. I thought Ryan had a good game, 5 for 6 on F.G., 4 for 4 on F.T. and 3 for 3 from downtown. He looked like he had alot of confidence. Hopefully Yi doesn’t digress when he gets back and we’ll have a good shooting Start and Bench P.F.. I also really really like Brook! What a steal at #10.
by NJGlenn on Jan 31, 2009 11:27 AM EST reply actions
Miserable game. Miserable small forward play and Devin and VC shot for a combined 30%. AND the defense stopped no one.
We are looking more like what the experts predicted at the beginning of the season. Hayes and Dooling were awful, we were spoiled because both had played well, more often than not. Only good games turned in by Boone and Anderson. Lopez OK, when he was on the court, but stupid rookie fouls kept him from dominating and scoring 25 or more.

@ Bill
It appears to me that you are of Yi’s biggest supporters on this board. Imo Yi is not the only reason for the Nets loses but he is the biggest reason as a player and it’s only cuz the coach doesn’t reconize the strengths and weaknesses of his players. Yi is an underdeveloped, skilled shooter who loses his confidence cuz he gets outplayed regulaly by opposing PFs. I’m not saying in the future he could develop into a PF but with his limited experience and his questionable production last year at the position there was no reason to put the burden on him right away. Basically Anderson is going thru the same problem and it all starts with the ability to be a force on the defensive end wich neither of these players are capable of now. Can you tell me a good team in the league that doesn’t have a good defensive PF? The Nets biggest asset is their backcourt and when thats the best part of your team, you’re in trouble. When your small guys are better than your big guys you can’t win unless you have a guy like Jordan. If small guys led to success we would still have RJ, VC & Kidd. When the coach starts playing front court players who excel defensively and we have them but never play them appropriately, thats when we will be successful. Right now it appears that the coach likes to spread the floor with his fowards so his guards have a lane. Those forwards can’t play d. That sums up the Nets.
Bill do you think Yi could play the SF?

A few things:
a)Did i call it or what?? Classic 08-09 Nets Friday night mail in. I need to do some research, I think we’ve been getting our tails kicked every friday night this season…
b)I have to hand it to Frank this season for installing two innovative systems…on offense we have his version of the “drivel drive”(credit JoeNetsfan!!), an offense so predictable that a varsity middle school team could successfully defend against it it, and on defense, we have the “Matador” zone, which makes any team look like 1997 Chicago Bulls when playing against it. Kudos to Frank, and kudos to the Nets players who for the past 8 out of the last 9 games consistently break out the stamps and envelopes at half time for use in the 3rd quarter

Zartan really.
Antoine Wright and Marcus Williams are flourishing (along with Malik Allen) outside of Frank, right!
Krstic, Lopez, Harris, Anderson, Boone, Moore, Even a little bit of RJ are all under Frank’s watch and Yi He developed them, especially Harris. SWilliam, Marcus, etc, were not developed b/c they are not good. Yi will come along. Frank actually has talent now and he is developing them. Do you think anyone else can bring more out of Boone? Like Carlisle with Antoine Wright? Like Nellie with marcus williams? Frank is not the issue here. He has done a very good job. We do not have enough talent yet. When Yi, Lopez and Anderson develop fully, like next year, we will be a low level playoff team (assuming VC will be gone) Right now, we are not that good. Give the man his due: no one thought he could develop young players. He’s doing it. The cost of developing young players (with a cheap boss) is that you lose.

Looks like another one of those 3rd quarters huh? Did you guy obviously think we were going to sweep the Hawks? Not a suprise that JJ would go off, that’s waht superstars do.
Nice to hear that Anderson was 3 of 3 from the 3 point line. We need more production for our forwards, and obviously our offense is so predictable now, that we haven’t scored 100 points (besides the toronto game) in quite a while.
Were goin in the wrong direction right now, and we need some help.
