All-Star Aftermath

Vince Carter knows what it's like to don those all-Star duds and thinks Devin Harris won't really know what an honor it is til he walks on that court in Phoenix. Harris said he thinks he deserved it, has worked hard for it, hopes it will build his swagger and confidence. VC agrees. But everyone also agrees much more will now be expected of Devin Harris, All-Star.

Lawrence gave him the ball and let him do his thing, we will see if NJ fired the coach, Devin will not be in all-star level. I don’t see he hurts his rib, just an excuse for bad shooting night.

please read what Dave D wrote. VC is a class act.

VC doesn’t care.
Harris on the other hand appeared to be very concerned about being selected. Since Novemember, Harris has significantly increased his shot attempts and yet his FG% went way down while his TOs went way up. He wanted it badly!

last 5 games Devin .35% in fg .14 in 3p .83% in ft; VC .45% in fg, .41 in 3p and .94 in ft, who is hurting the team?

one thing i havent liked since we got VC is the seemingly consistent vince-vs-nets in almost any and every category. whether its who is the better player to who should take the shot.
i just dont get why people cannot be happy for harris instead of trying to say he didnt deserve it over vince. this is one thing i wont miss whenever vince and the nets part ways
Frank: “But there are always going to be guys who get snubbed.”
i dont agree much with frank but he is right. if vince makes it then you say devin is snubbed or nelson,jj,lewis or whoever. melo got snubbed on the west, thats just how it is. only so many spots for so many good players
“In this case, it started with CDR complaining – more than once — about how he wasn’t getting any foul calls during a drill, and Dougie tell him to shut his gob and get back to work.”
no issue imo. its just frustration spilling over and the media happened to witness it. it happens all the time in every sport. look at the boldin blowup from the eagles game. it happens all the time but when the media sees it and reports it the story takes on a life of its own sometimes. in this case there is no story thankfully

If it matters anymore, you could tell Carter wanted it more than he did in years past – if only to acknowledge the superb way with which he’s embraced the captaincy of a team that’s still (technically) in the playoff hunt.
No complaints, of course: “I’ll probably see my daughter,” he said of his own weekend plans. “We have five days off. I’ve never taken a vacation in my life, so. . . .”
Just the same, the last few days represented an ineffably marvelous snapshot of his transformation, really. It started with the Toronto game, which everyone will remember as the night Devin couldn’t apply the dagger. What everyone will forget, however, is how Vince had the ball in his hands with 10 seconds left after Devin tripped over the midcourt line.
VC picked it up, and could have easily said, “Go through, I got this.” His career has been defined by those five words, really. Instead, he handed it back to Harris, as casually as he would pick up the kid’s car keys. Your game, he said.
And it wasn’t an easy thing to do. There are a lot of other stars who might have looked at No. 34 and said, “Uh, can I remind you that you’re averaging 15.4 points on .383 shooting with a lousy assist-to-turnover ratio (6.1-to-3.4) this month?”
But Carter acquiesced. If Harris hit the shot, he’d be the one carrying him off. Instead, he was the one picking him up.
And today, he reiterated that he’d rather see his teammate go to Phoenix than get the nod himself.
Class act.
sigh
How many times have we all used the word class act for Vince Carter this season?
Wat too many times. This is what a true superstar is like. You can tell that VC had the ball with 10 seconds to go, with the reputation as MR.Clutch and the Raptor killer, but he gave it to Harris because he trusted him, wanted to give him confidence, and picked him up when he just couldn’t finish.
He even said the right things and is still committed too this team. Playoffs first is what he said. It’s nice to be in the all-star game, but it’s one game that dpesn’t even count on our record. He said they have games to play and it’s all about the playoffs. He’s even said if it was between Harris and Vince, he’d give it to his backcourt teamate.
That’s why so many think people be;ieve Vince is an allstar. He deserves it, he’s been our captain, our leader, and our best player so far. We know he’s an all star, and there always will be people who get snubbed.
Congratulations to Devin Harris, he deserves it. It’s great that he’s representing New Jersey. Hopefully this will be a big confidence booster for him.
That’s my point of view, as a VC fan anyway.
Congrats Devin!

You are sooo right. I think VC fans follow him around defending him and it’s always VC-vs-nets. I’d like rto see him get traded for a young player or 2. Devin and B Lo are the future. VC will be long gone by the time these guys develop. He has been good for the team this year but his fans that are putting down Devin to lift up VC are very annoying. I’m very happy Devin is the one who made the All Star team. He represents the Nets now. He’ll be the face of the franchise for years to come.
by supreme on Jan 30, 2009 3:41 PM EST reply actions
No one is putting down Devin. The articles featured here also pointed to Devin’s weaknesses. Devin has a breakout year, but that doesn’t mean we should overlook his efficiency (in FG% and turnovers) and lack of defense. The facts (stats) are out there for interpretation.
by croc on Jan 30, 2009 4:04 PM EST reply actions
will see, he will not be the franchise players if he has a superstar player next to him, like Leborn or Dwight, etc..

Devin is a young point guard, hes not chris paul or anything like that. I think fans that believe VC should have got it are overly critical and need to give him some time. He is only 25 years old, dont expect him to be in MVP talks or anything like that.
by Jared on Jan 30, 2009 4:18 PM EST reply actions
No, VC fans or Devin fans. Most of us are Nets fans here.
I am happy for Devin, but I just don’t agree Devin has had a bigger impact than VC did this season. That’s what people were responding to.
by croc on Jan 30, 2009 4:21 PM EST reply actions
If Devin wasn’t periodically hurt and played for a bona fide coach there would be MVP talk, but he really seems disillusioned since the benching
by supernetsfan on Jan 30, 2009 4:24 PM EST reply actions
There’s no need to argue here…both Harris and Carter have played like crap this month and the way we are slowly sinking into the lottery is evidence of that…
who cares really…i’m glad VC gets to rest…Harris gets recognition on the big stage, which is good for the Nets…maybe NOW, he(Blur) can focus on helping us win games instead of worrying about playing in the all star game.

Mr. Dollar Bills is right.
End of discussion I’m happy for Devin, VC has been nothing short of spectacular, but I’m glad he’ll get some rest.

At least this is better than nobody on the Nets making the cut, because that was probably almost the case.

Good post Mr. Dollar Bills. I don’t understand why it has to be VC vs. The Nets or VC vs. Devin. Everyone is part of the same team and the support VC has shown Devin and has shown the Nets this year is part of the reason why Devin has been able to elevate his game to this level. I’m frustrated with all of these “trade VC” posts and articles that are popping up all the time. This is just like what happened during RJ’s final month before he was traded and now I feel like it is only a matter of time before VC is gone as well. All I am going to say is that VC has done so much for the team this year and so much for the development of these youngers that it is going to be sad to see him go if a trade does happen. There is more to the game than winning a ring and he stuck with a struggling team through the bad to enable them to transition into something good. Instead of making VC a scapegoat or comparing him and Devin, as Nets fans we should be happy for both of their success and we should hope that the team will continue to prove the doubters wrong and reach their full potential.

I honestly love Devin, but he starts to remind me of Jefferson. Correct me if I’m wrong, but he’s a fan fave with a great personality, and he’s good on offense but kinda gets obsessed with doing too good which ends up hurting him. I still think he is very good, and he’ll mature and learn to get into the system much more effectively. Plus, this is the Nets we’re talking about. I would much rather see Harris shooting than Boone or Najera.

@supernetsfan
sorry man i think you are wrong. yeah im not a big frank fan either, but you cannot deny what frank has done for harris this year.
even the biggest frank hater has to realize that frank gave devin the keys and devin, up until this bad stretch as a team, as driven it fast, furious and effective.
yeah it seems obvious that a coach should change his system a bit depending on the unique talent he has, but frank could have easily gone into camp saying you play in my system how i want you to play. that would have been disastrous, but give frank credit. he realized he needed to change the system and take advantage of harris’ killer speed and he did change his approach offensively.
if you want to give out the Nets MVP no doubt it is VC. hes been solid on the court, but better off of it. that is what is NOT considered by coaches selecting for the AS team and really should they consider it? the AS isnt a community type of award or best character award, if so VC would have a spot.
its great to see VC’s support for devin. for this franchise it was more important for Devin to make it than vince. hopefully devin will realize he is a top player in this league and can bring it more consistently and try and take us to that next level with vince.

@supreme
you want to say that VC fans are downing Devin, but
it’s you who continually puts down Vince.
“mails it in”, “not a warrior”, “gets the least with
the most”, “I’d like to see him get traded”, “he’ll
be long gone before Devin & Brook develop”. It’s all
to undermine the team and Vince’s role as a leader.
Devin will have the opportunity to be an all-star many
times; Vince, with his performance, leadership and
stats this year shoud’ve been the all-star.
It’s done, we’re happy for Devin. The Nets are a TEAM
and Vince is a TEAM FIRST PLAYER. GO NETS!!!

Gotta agree with Oldjersey here. Sometimes you get blamed for punching people, when in fact you were the one who get punched first.

Funny thing is I never used to comment on Vince. He was a nice addition to the Nets when Kmart got traded. I just enjoyed what he did. And even at the beginning of this year I just enjoyed the games. But the more I come to this site and read how Vince is a God. Devin is a ball hog. Vince is the best player. He deserves to get traded to a winner. He deserves a title. Then I start reading more and more about how he should be seperated from the team and it’s Vince is a prince and everyone else stinks and should just give him the ball and get out of the way. I say you know what….He can go and take these fans with him. I want to enjoy the Nets TEAM not the oh poor Vince bs. Get me a young gun to go with Devin and Brook.
by supreme on Jan 30, 2009 7:41 PM EST reply actions
I don’t know why you have to separate Nets fans from VC fans. Vince has been here for four years, and it makes perfect sense why there might be more fans here praising him. There are plenty of “Devin is God” fans here, not as many, but they sure are here. And three years from now, there will be more.
by biggie on Jan 30, 2009 7:48 PM EST reply actions
What is with the whole VC fans vs. Nets fans. Thats like me saying I love New Jersey but I hate America. If u life VC and ur on this website, it would make sense ur a Nets fan. If ur not, then go find a VC fan blog. This site is called NETSdaily.

@supreme
If you don’t like the VC fans, and therefore want to see
Vince traded for a young gun, then you deserve to wallow
in Nets mediocrity for the years, you say, it will take
Devin and Brook to develop. Me, I think Vince is making
a career sacrifice by committing to the Nets Young guys
and this rebuilding phase. I haven’t heard Vince complain
at all, and WE, yes WE have a better chance at winning
basketball with Vince than without. I like the prospects;
Devin, a rising star; Brook, possible Tim Duncan presence;
Yi, who knows, could be; Ryan, this guy is going to be
good; Vince, a veteran super star; Keyon and all the Nets.
Another key piece, and another year developing together
and we can all be singing the praises of our NJ NETS…

It’s not all VC fans. It’s the VC that aren’t true Net fans. Trust me there are a lot. And the jealousy from the last second shot from Devin and the All Star game snub brought it all out. When the Nets were winning you couldn’t really tell. But as they started to lose more it’s “this team sucks trade Vince to a winner”, every game. So since I don’t really think Vince is the long term answer. I say it’s better to trade him a year too early rather than a year too late. and let those fake fans go with him. True Net fans will root for his replacement and wish him well just like we did Kidd and RJ.
