Hornets Hand Nets Fourth Straight Loss with Harris Hurting

We now know how Devin Harris would respond to being benched by Lawrence Frank: not well. Still bothered by his sore ribs (he was unable to play in the fourth quarter), Harris shot just 1-11 from the field and was completely outplayed by Chris Paul Wednesday night as the Nets fell to the shorthanded Hornets in New Orleans. Lawrence Frank said Harris would go for further tests Thursday. X-rays taken before the Nets left New Jersey proved negative. Behind strong play from their bench, the Nets led most of the first half, but the Hornets took the lead in the final seconds of the second quarter. They then took control with a 16-2 run early in the third. The Nets cut what was a 16-point lead down to five in the final minutes, but missed on two chances to make it a one-possession game and Paul put them away with a three-point play with 58 seconds to go. Paul finished with 29 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Vince Carter led the Nets with 20 points, while Bobby Simmons added 16. Ryan Anderson had a career-high 10 rebounds.

Worst thing Frank could have done today was lose Devin Harris as a player. By benching him in the fourth I think he did just that. I know he was sucking, but a player can turn it around at any given moment. Its tough to come back from a big lead- u need everything to go ur way. And I don’t understand why he didn’t use lopez more early on. Fine he might struggle a bit at times, but more often than not he will provide.

damn it.
we needed this one. d-harris looked awful, i thought it was mostly mental for him tonight.
CP3, kid is amazing.

So was it the ribs or did Frank kill Harris’s confidence?
by Rich on Jan 21, 2009 10:30 PM EST reply actions
The one positive that can be drawn from this loss is Bobby’s 16 point performance. Initially I thought the Hughes deal may have been good, but Simmons definitely has an upside and if he can be more consistent he can definitely develop into a pretty strong player for the Nets.

Maybe it is me, but, can someone tell me why Brook was not utilized in this game? No David West, Tyson Chandler or even Hilton Armstrong. Why was the ball not just going through Brook on the offensive end the whole game? PLEASE….tell me why? Have we not seen enough of his abilities to score around the rim? HE IS 7FT. PLEASE GIVE HIM THE BALL!

WOW WE LOSE TO HORNETS WITHOUT CHANDLER AND WEST. FRANK U SUCK U BENCHED HARRIS AGAIN, AND PRETTY SOON HE WILL DEMAND A TRADE LIKE KIDD DID, AND WE WILL BE STUCK WITH DOOLING.

AND GUYS NOW THE NETS DO NOT WANT HUGHES THEY WANT MIKE MILLER FROM T-WOLVES AND WE WOULD GIVE UP SWIFT.

You have Sean Marks, Julian Wright and Melvin Ely as only interior presence and BLopez only had 8 shots ( 2 of those in the last 30s of the game )???
And yeah seems like Frank has lost Devin Harris .
by EarlS on Jan 21, 2009 10:35 PM EST reply actions
Yeah…so the plan was to exploit their lack of big men through Lopez…they couldnt even set him up for shots…8 field goal attempts…right…thats really taking advantage.
From what I saw, we played really bad to start the second half, and then pretty good towards the end of the fourth, which is at least encouraging. Sometimes it feels like for years now this team hasn’t been able to play one game with consistency. Jarvis and Simmons were the reason we weren’t blown out tonight…funny how after the trade rumors Simmons had the best game tonight…which just goes to show that our system is completely F’ed up when Simmons is looking like more of a part of the offense then Vince and Brooke. Maybe he didnt have the ball in his hands as much as VC but…C’mon these schemes are so one dimensional. The whole league is on to our system already!

this team blows…harris attitude seems completley different from the last year and the begining of this year.ever since the hawks buzzer beater when he looked like he could give 2 craps i just noticed hes been more layed back less driving, less exicment, less cheering on his teamates….i dont know whats going on with him but he better pick it up

i think he will get fired though. he guys we have lost 4 in arrow it could go to 7. we are not gonna beat the spurs if we can’t beat hornets without chandler and west. thunder are great at home they beat jazz by 20 grizzlies we might win might

Frustrating loss. I also don’t think benching star players is a good idea. Unless they are playing hurt (check), and are forewarned of the possibility of being pulled. Sports is alot about pride and effort. Take away the pride, lose the effort.

So many close calls in this game went against the Nets. Anderson, Lopez, and Harris in particular ran into trouble with this.
by pinetar on Jan 21, 2009 10:38 PM EST reply actions
Oh yeah…and our Defense for the most part was non existent. At the end it picked up and we started getting stops. That just goes to show that they are capable of playing D.
Can someone please explain to me why Frank has a reputation of a good defensive coach? It seems to me the past three or four years the Nets cant defend at all, especially perimeter. Look, I look at it like this: If the team has spurts where they show they are capable of playing D and being agressive on O, but don’t do it consistently, it must be on the coach. If they didn’t show any ability at all, I would have an easier time conceding that our players arent good defenders, but sometimes they actually play good D! So what’s going on?

fire frank now fire frank now fire frank now we are to loyal to these people look how long it took us to get rid of collins, and we need to get hughes someone we know can score for us look how many empty trips we had tonight or people just throwing shots up looking for fouls we cant expect them to come, we need to know we can hit the shot hornets looked like the globetrotters out there tonight against us nailing everything and we get it witin 5 in the 4th and come up with nothing this is getting harder and harder for me to watch and im a diehard nets fan, and to get back to frank fire him before this gets to out of hand were now 19-23 this isnt good and we cant keep looking towards 2o10 cause we may not have a chance of getting anyone good when that time comes, tell me what you guys think of this?

This is my first respond since Saturady. Let me say that VC and Harris should’ve been glad to sit out the second half. I was nauseated after watching the the first half. VC was hurt and he should’ve not played but he was trying to be a soldier for his team. On the other hand The young Devin Harris has a lot to learn. He should’ve reacted like VC with maturity but he has let this first half of a season mess with his ego afterall he’s a superstar in his mind. lol.
Tonight game should’ve been a victory if Devin ego wasn’t hurt, I meant his ribs.lol

Devin wasn’t benched, he had to sit out the rest of the game with his sore rib which he shouldn’t be playing on in the first place. Matt ask yourself why

its not franks fault harris left to go in the locker rroom at the end of the third quarter he sucks he missed 3 wide open layups and the nets missed half thier frree throws lawrence is a great coach and he cant control what the players attitude is ont he court so stop saying fire frank,
by justin on Jan 21, 2009 10:45 PM EST reply actions
Just to make sure everyone knows Frank didn’t bench Harris, he had to go back to the locker room because he reinjured his rib.
We should have won this game, they had both West, and Chandler out, their backup C gone, and they had to nobodies in Ely and Mark something. Argh it’s frustrating.
It’s frustrating because I believed Lopez needed more touches down in the post, because there frontcourt could not shoot a lick. But they played good defense.
Chris Paul burned us, he is the best pg in the game, and since Devin never showed up tonight, he was able to run freely.
Carter had a nice game back, but he didn’t have enough help from Harris.
Harris….I knowhe’s injured, but he had two open layups and just couldn’t connect, argh, maybe it was one of those nights?
I just hope that Harris doesn’t have a grudge against Frank..
Still Bobby Simmons had a great night. I’d rather keep him than Hughes, he really has played very very well as of late, and we need him. Forget Hughes.
OH and that Monster block from Hayes was nasty!
We were down big, but we made it close, and we just couldn’t stop CP3, not get enough defensive stops, but come on at least this group reacted.
Come on the bench played really well, But Lopez and Anderson wasn’t able to get enough time, It was a good effort.
Hopefully we can steal one in San Antonio, but if we can go 2-2 than I’m happy. 3-1 would be eccstatical.
frustrating loss. Can’t wait to read all the trade Harris and Fire Frank posts…
ugh goodnight.

another thing about the benching. Why didn’t Frank BENCH JKidd with the headache saga? He know that VC is mild-mannered with a kind heart. Kidd on the otherhand would kick his tiny little rear end.
by iiii on Jan 21, 2009 11:06 PM EST reply actions
We do need Yi.
Anderson is only good for offensive boards, he just can’t seem to get anything going.
And the Bucks just destroyed the Mavs by like 50. Hopefully we can just stay competitive these next two weeks.

@ matt
dude seriously? your giving up when there’s 40 games left, and teams like the Bobcats and Knicks still in playoff contention when they have like 26 losses.
Seriously? Look there are going to be tough games, were not all completley healthy, we have two rookies in our starting lineup, and we have one player that his career average has more than 10 points.
Relax. This is a young nets team, this season is far from over, and we have very winnablee games after San Antonio.
DOn’t give up. Net’s played very competitive against an Elite team in the Western Conference.
Seriously? Again don’t give up.

I think Devin is reverting to who he used to be, someone who can’t hit a shot, unless it is a layup. Disappointing loss.
However, tonight, I was in Miami at the HEAT-CELTICS GAME.
I WENT TO SCOUT DWADE FOR YOU ROD AND KIKI!
WELL, DWADE DIDN’T GET AN EASY OR OPEN SHOT ALL NIGHT.
They don’t run plays or screens for him. The Heat are not a good passing team. DWADE makes something out of nothing all the time. Their point guard play is poor, and coaching poor as well. DWADE is scoring alot, but he would be scoring more and would be much happier on a better team. The Heat suck.
Put DWADE on a team with Devin (if he can find his shot again) and Lopez, and a few more players in two years, and he could be happy and we could contend. In Miami, except for the many pretty young Latina women in the arena, there is nothing to hold DWADE.
by Paul Erstein on Jan 22, 2009 12:05 AM EST reply actions
we lost because we WENT ZONE TOO MUCH LIKE ALWAYS. DOES FRANK NOT REALIZE THAT THE 3 IS WORSE THEN THE 2 IF THE OTHER TEAM HAS SHOOTERS LIKE PEJA STOAKAVIC YOU SHULD NOT GO ZONE. WE LOST BECAUSE WE GIVE OPEN SHOTS AFTER OPEN SHOTS AFTER OPEN SHOTS ITS MIND BLOWING. FRANK IS A DEFENSIVE COACH? I DONT THINK SO
by ben on Jan 22, 2009 1:24 AM EST reply actions
I had to work so I missed the game. I couldn’t read all of the comments above.
In my opinion, if a player (harris) in any way tanks it (like Kidd’s headache routine) then he should be gone. IF that is what happenned here – don’t let the door hit you on the way out cuz. Ship him to Portland (where he’ll be happy) and get back Bayless, Outlaw, Fernandez, whatever. Then get some more youngins for Carter (Hickson, etc).
I’d rather see guys bust it and lose than guys throwing millionaire temper tantrums. I get the feeling that they will get rid of problem players than blame it on Frank. Unlike with Byron, but back then the Nets were “contenders” at that time. That’s not teh case now. For some reason I’m thinking Harris probably wants out of here – and if its because he can’t beleive he was benched for a half after getting torched (like he apparently did tonight) then c-ya.
Sorry fans, I have Zero Tolerance for noncompetitors at the NBA level.

even during devin’s hot streak , i didn’t think he was potential franchise potential. devin is soft and shows no leadership potential. a team built around devin is at best 2nd round playoff team. this injury really displays devin character.
i was a huge yi-basher, but our current losing streak is directly correlated to yi’s injury. ryan anderson better pick up his game otherwise he won’t get another shot to stay in this league. he has a guaranteed contract, so if he doesn’t exhibit development these next 3-4 weeks, he’s following the footsteps of antoine wright

FIRE FRANK
once again, completely incapable of responding as a coach. benching the stars was ridiculous, considering he let the team start off the boston game shooting jumper after jumper, completely out of control, not calling a time until 5 something left in the quarter. Lopez didn’t touch the ball once in that period. And in the end, he has the nerve to bench the stars and feel like he did something? What crap. We wouldn’t be in that position if it wasn’t for him. Let’s face it. He does not have the personality to lead star players. Nobody gives a crap. It’s so apparent when watching this team. The effort is simply not there. And you can forget about harris playing for this guy, you could tell from his body language last night. I don’t think it has anything to do with his ribs.
Our defense is pathetic. Let’s go on another ridiculous losing streak, maybe this year they will actually fire this loser.
by epik on Jan 22, 2009 8:55 AM EST reply actions
@ epik
Right on !! You nailed it.
I think Yi had the best move of the year. Getting injured before the killer stretch in the sched. I could just imagine what he’d be like right about now. When do the Grizzlies and Kings come back? Thats when he’ll be back. For those who think being tall and slow at the 3 is bad look at last nights game. Yi would be what Peja is, maybe better cuz he is more athletic. He would be a nightmare to guard at the 3. All I read about is making trades and putting VC at the 3. What a joke! Imo the problem is the defense at the 4. If you can’t see the problem, you can’t fix it.

I was never a basher of Frank until the benching of our “star” players. Frank has wounded the confidence of Harris for good. Vince was not as wounded as Harris. I have never seen a star player benched unless he was disicpline for his conduct or something. Vince had these young guys rolling for most of the season. Frank tried to tear it down with one game.
After the Spurs game on Friday, I see the team rebounding again. The schedule works in their favor. Frank must also put the ball in Vince’s hand. He will make sure all of his teammates get theirs if he’s doubled team.
