Kiki Keeping Quiet

Kiki Vandeweghe wouldn't talk about the Larry Hughes trade rumor, but said nothing is "imminent" and didn't want to talk about the benching of Vince Carter and Devin Harris, but said both "took it the right way". Meanwhile, Fred Kerber reports Rod Thorn called a team meeting on the benchings. The Hornets' two bigs might be Sean Marks and Melvin Ely, with David West, Tyson Chandler likely out.

*of course kiki is saying nothing is imminent, what else do front office execs say?
*he mentions that moves made will be moves for the future and not to get us in the playoffs this year. well if that really is the goal and not so much making the playoffs this year then why are we even thinking about the trade? there no absolutely zero need to do this. bobby and ager will be off the books by 2010 and they are good teammates. hughes comes off the book as well and could open a roster spot for a 3rd pg in emergency situations, but he is not a good teammate. if you want to really get in the playoffs this year i think you lean more towards making the deal because on the court he is an upgrade over simmons and we can add that 3rd pg so if we need to give devin a rest or if someone goes down we have depth.
*anyone else think the ‘senior pez’ nickname is stupid? i get why Dave says it, but it just sounds stupid..no?
*despite tyson and west being out this is a very talented team with the best pg in the league and they can still easily beat us. yes it makes the game a much more winnable game, but if we expect to have our way inside because of their 2 bigs out we will get burned. we are not good enough to take any opponent, healthy or injured, lightly

the more i think about, i really dont want larry on this hughes. it is important to keep our seasons goals in focas, which were primarily to develope our young guys.
larry hughes taking 12 shots a game does nothing for our present or future. id rather those shots go to brook, yi, and cdr for their development.

@ xcalibur
Why do you say they were thinking about a trade. I’m not so sure it was anything other than Hughes agent coming to the Nets with a proposal.

@ni
just going by reports. i know you mentioned that, i think it was the nj.com forum, and it could be and probably is true it is larrys agent.
one report said the deal was just waiting on the nets to sign off. i was going off that report. its just a rumor of course, but if the ball really is in our court then i dont know why we would keep it on the table if what kiki said is the focus. to make moves for the future, not to make moves just to make the playoffs.
i dont think it happens. the more i really think about it the less i like it each time, mainly because of hughes’ attitude. i am not sure i want that around brook and yi and the other young kids who could be easily influenced. plus hughes would be the third wheel and assume the role of rj, would he accept that? im not sure what hughes will accept anymore. im pretty sure that next year, contract year, he will play and produce good so if you believe that then maybe he will be motivated and be a good soldier and the trade might be worth it.

I don´t necesarilly think hughes hurts youth development, seriously it could help. To cover for the lack of scorers and defense frank has to play too many utility players every night to fit in all the rookies, and for them to get a ton of minutes. Anderson and Lopez do get a lot of time, but Anderson and CDR especially are not getting enough time if you consider the goal is to develope youth over all else.
Theyve done a great job of keeping a winning atmosphere which helps youth a ton, but to do that they keep CDR out (I also realize he was injured and is not quite ready, but bare with me) and when Yi is around Anderson has to play incredibly well to stay on the floor. This is because Frank has to keep multiple utility guys, Najera, Hassell, Simmons (even though he is a starter he plays minutes, including at the 4, in excess of what his abilities would usually get him), alongside regular contributors Hayes and Dooling. With Hughes our scoring average and defending could improve to the point where the rookies could have the benefit of playing just to rest starters and garbage time. Right now Anderson and CDR, and even Lopez, can not remain on the floor when they are not on a streak that guarantees production. With Hughes in the rotation production could increase enough for Frank to be confident in giving the rooks some regular old tryout time, without having to yank them when they arent doing excellently.

Mostly agree with luca, especially about CDR. I actually think that court time dedicated to rookie training and development is fundamental to Nets rebuilding. I don’t feel that playing rookies and winning are mutually exclusive ideas. At least the rookies should be given equal opportunity to learn, demonstrate and improve via (as luca states) “some regular old tryout time” with realistic expectations for performance.
