Facing RJ Will Lead to Re-examination of Yi Trade

Richard Jefferson faces his former team for the first time next Friday. He's averaging 17.3 ppg, better than Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons combined but Milwaukee is 16-18. Matt McQueeny blogs that while "the move has backfired a bit in the short term, the gamble on Yi's development potential was worth the deal in the long term." He notes RJ turns 29 in June and doubts he'd "accept the scoring demotion" behind Devin Harris.

I think it’s almost virtually impossible to judge or assess a trade like this in isolation. Certainly we feel pretty good about the Kidd/Harris trade right now….but would we feel the same if Dallas makes it to the finals? So to look at RJ trade, only the future (2-3 years later) can tell. But then there is also the coaches, the players and the system we have to take into consideration. A quick answer can only depend on our record against the Bucks this year.

“Before the clock started ticking, the nets cleared out a significant amount of cap space for the 2010 offseason by trading richard jefferson for what appears to be pennies on the dollar (yi jianlian and bobby simmons). It’s hard not to imagine that they could have landed a more attractive package had they waited until the trading deadline, BUT THE NETS MUST THINK MUCH MORE HIGHLY OF YI THAN OTHERS.”
That’s what jonathan givony, president of draft express, had to say about the trade at the time it took place.
Draft Express is a worldwide basketball scouting service, one of the best in the business.
Givony loved the lopez and cdr picks for the nets, was lukewarm about the anderson pick and gave a big thumbs down to the jefferson trade.
His overall draft-day grade for the nets was a C-. If not for the jefferson trade, the grade would have been much higher.

While I can accept the notion that if RJ was still on this team then it may have caused a problem of him taking a back seat to Harris, I still say this trade stinks. Yi is garbage. he does nothing right from what i can see. if he’s not wide open and set up for a shot then he’s worthless. I think the trade stinks because we could have received so much more for RJ than what we got.

What the problem is, is where people hold RJ. RJ in my opinion wasn’t an all star. Good player but not somebody who is the number 1 go to guy. The big contract has something to do with it also. We’re lucky we got even Yi

Jonathan Givony, president of draft express, gave the bucks an ‘A’ for their draft-day acquisitions … based almost entirely on the strength of the yi-jefferson trade.
Givony correctly predicted that joe alexander would be a project. Givony was lukewarm about the luc mbah a moute pick.
Givony: “You have to like what the bucks did in packaging the equally disappointing yi jianlian and bobby simmons FOR ONE OF THE 10 BEST SMALL FORWARDS IN THE NBA IN RICHARD JEFFERSON. Milwaukee went into this draft looking to get better at the small forward position, and did exactly that, without giving up too much in return. Yi Jianlian never wanted to be here in the first place, and bucks fans don’t really sound all that sad to see him go. Bobby Simmons might have been the most overpaid player in the nba at his position considering what he’s given the bucks since he signed his 5-year, 47 million dollar contract. THAT’S A VERY SMALL PRICE TO PAY TO GET AN ATHLETE OF JEFFERSON’S CALIBER.”
It’s been very hard for nets fans to come to grips with the fact that the jefferson-yi trade was a horrible decision by thorn & company. Just like it’s been hard for mavs fans to admit the obvious about the harris-kidd trade. But it is what it is. The sooner we accept that, the better off we’ll be.

if Yi wasn’t chinese then the trade would never have happened. Nets just wanted to get the chinese crowd and tv audience for financial reasons. if you notice, Yi starts but never finishes the games. gee…i wonder why
