Ankle Woes Bench Yi, Dooling But Camp Opens on Optimistic Note

The Nets opened their training camp Friday with Media Day...and news of the first injuries of the new season. Yi Jianlian and Keyon Dooling will be out for seven to 10 days with "slight" ankle sprains. That schedule should permit them to play in Europe next month. But the big news was the confidence level exuded by the team. As Devin Harris said, "We know what we’re capable of doing."

are you serious? thank god its camp but geez. at least it was devin who has had his fair share of ankle troubles.

Yi could use rest anyway. i hope dooling is still being vocal and taking the rooks to class even though he cant suit up

by xcalibur on Sep 26, 2008 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

Not much of a big deal…Yi needs the rest.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Sep 26, 2008 2:18 PM EDT reply actions

Great, what a start.
Well, at least the other bigs can play more.
Maybe Frank wants him to watch and learn from the sidelines first, easier than explaining to him.

As for Dooling, does he have an existing injury? Or did he get it from the workouts? Damn, it’s offseason and one of the experienced guys, he has no excuse. He should have been taking care of his body during this time of the season.

by Dude on Sep 26, 2008 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Ok at least the season hasnt begun, we should have them back to 100% come game time.

by Adam.y on Sep 26, 2008 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

Oh this is freaking great, casualties already.. I don’t like this news of injuries this early.

by Netsfan on Sep 26, 2008 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Yo dude, you must have never played the game or you would know all to well that sprain ankles have absolutely nothing to do with being in shape.

by Big Ed on Sep 26, 2008 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

Dude,

Dooling has been participating in work outs and scrimmages with the team, so you’re off base.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Sep 26, 2008 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

Yea Dude – get your facts straight…
Being in shape and spraining an ankle are un-related.
For the first time ever I agree with BigEd

by BrooklynZoo on Sep 26, 2008 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

This is why we need another backup pg. The season is long, and injuries can happen.

by LetsGoNets on Sep 26, 2008 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

Do we even know how they sprained em, they could have simply stepped on someone else’s foot. It’s too early to judge ppl and blame them being out of shape or anything else that has nothing to do with sprained ankles.

by TheMann on Sep 26, 2008 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

These are the breaks….

Its happening all around the league to players with more importance then our 2… so in that sense, I am relieved.

It could be worse, there could be evulsion fractures.

by Tim on Sep 26, 2008 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

who cares how they sprain them.

This is a blessing in this disguise. Yi needs the rest and should be 100% come Preseason.

Now From what I’ve read, NBA players don’t give a s*** about what writers see them as. They probably don’t even know they exist!!

This team will be in the playoffs, guaranteed.

I know you guys are gonna kill me for what I am about to say. But I gotta say it anyway. Here the shocker of the season. I actually believe that they guy who is going to step up and take his skill set to another level is………… HEAD COACH LFrank. I know you guys are saying BigEd are you drunk have you gone back to crack. NO, I just think he has made enough errors especially in our eyes that his dedication to wanting to get better and grow as a coach that players can respect and follow with finally maturate. Also he wont have JKidd spreading posion ( your best player)as he had the last 2 seasons.

He has some guys that have clearly something to prove. And its like everything else on the pro level if your best player is 100% behind you the rest will follow. The secret is to get off to at least a 500 start.

by BigEd on Sep 26, 2008 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

Ed, I thought the same thing all summer, thats why I haven’t said as much about him this year (yet). I got your back on this one.

I LOVE when someone underestimate the other-in this case NETS!
WHY?? Couse then the underestimate have 10 times more chance to win!!!
It’s give you MOTIVATION,UNITY,ANGER,STRENGHT….A LOT LOT THINGS!!!!!!
A LOT of players in NETS uniform have something no everything to PROVE everything they have in their arsenal!!!!

TWO of them the most-VINCE CARTER and L.FRANK
This will be REALY REALY GOOOOD SEASON!!!!

Or how bout all of us who have been defending Frank all along? Now you get the credit for it? Frank is a damn fine coach, and now he has coachable players.

by Tim on Sep 26, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

im wiht you bug ed. i think hell make a real effort to change and better his coaching. i think he knows now gthat developing youngsters, treating players equally, putting them in position to succeed as whole, not like the motion offense hwere only rj’s scoring average benefited, being patient, lettoingthe youngsters play through mistakes, be a leader, and stay committed to all the youngtsers.

at least the guy wants to win and improve. no doubt his coaching stank last year, but i think now that kiki and thorn put some requirements, and they gave him a certain plan to work with. as kiki said hard work doesnt guarantuee success, and that bottom line hell have tro show progress.

at least he seems committed. lets juts hope hes learned from his mostake, and not ppull out what he idid to sean last year. this tme around its all about development, no excuses.

i think the real question we need to get answered is why is CDR wearing #17 now. he coulda had 14, was wearing 8, coulda had 7 (players tend to either double their number or divide it). WE DEMAND ANSWERS!

well its been said a couple times now that our #1 priority is player development. not wins, but making sure our youngs improve on a day-in day-out basis. especially Yi and then brook, cdr, swat and so on. if Yi can perform at a fairly high level all year long where he is seen as a special talent then i think frank would win huge bonus points with management. not only would that give us a 7foot big who on the YES commercial is being deemed as a ‘franchise cornerstone’, but Yi’s play would allow Yormark to do his magic marketing not just an Asian player, but a very good basketball player.

look at the pictures from nba.com. we may not have the kidd-carter-rj big 3, but there definitely is a new trio of carter-harris-yi that is being marketed (also their jerseys are at the entrance of the nets hq as noted by ni and i’ve seen them myself) and has potential to be an attractive package on and off the court.

NETS BASKETBALL IS BACK! whether you think we will suck or make the playoffs i am so excited that we can finally talk about nets ball consistently and about new issues each day.

by xcalibur on Sep 27, 2008 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

Although to this point I never liked Frank because he never was able to figure out who to play that gave us the best chance to win. But he seems to be a good tactition and management has the right idea so at least he has people to learn from. It remains to be seen but it could mean the difference between winning and loosing.

I can hardly believe my eyes, but am pleased to see that cracks are starting to show in the rabid Frank hatred that is prevalent here. It must be opening day euphoria. The frothing will likely return when we get off to a slow start (5 to 7 wins in the first 20 games is my expectation). And that’s a shame. I’m not crazy about Frank, but believe he is competent and deserves a chance to develop this team.

No news flash here, but the snide little piece in today’s edition highlights the fact that the New York Times sports coverage of the Nets stinks. How can the supposed major newspaper of this region rely on AP wire recaps of Net games as they did last season? It’s not like they don’t have resources—their coverage of the Para-Olympics was extensive. Assign a writer already! Inexcusable.

I’m soo happy that these blogs r finally turning positive! Everytime i look at these, i see non-dependable fans who don’t have any hope whatsoever with these guys. They know what’s been said about them and they r going to do everything humanly possible to prove them wrong. These guys want to be good and u can tell. All of them were in the gym working out over a MONTH before mandatory workouts! These guys are doing everything they can to gel with each other and have a hell of a season!! I’ll def. be at the nets open practice to see this team in action! i can’t wait till my tickets come so i can go to the IZOD Center and see this team go to the playoffs!!!

by DHarris = Future on Sep 27, 2008 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

I noticed the #17 on CDR’s uniform as well…

Several other small things like that—someone is wearing #0. I think it’s Awvee Storey.

Hayes is #22. Last season, KVH was listed as #22. That ruse has now ended. KVH has no number.

Three Buck teammates from last year on the Nets: Yi, Simmons and Storey. Two Nets on the Bucks: RJ and Malik Allen.

I want Lopez re-measured. It is possible that a kid who was measured at Draft Camp in May has grown since? I guess so, considering he was a month a half beyond his 20th birthday at the time and measured out at 7’0.5" back then. I grew an inch between 19 and 20. Maybe he grew two inches. Yi was reportedly measured at 7’0.5" in Milwaukee last summer. He looks about two inches shorter than Lopez. And if Lopez turns out to be a solid pick at #10, we can thank Michael Jordan, who passed on him for a 5’11" point guard on draft night.

I have no idea how they will do this year, none.
