How Valuable is Stromile Swift...to the Nets?

It's become an almost foregone conclusion that Stromile Swift will be sent elsewhere, either before the season begins ... or at the trade deadline, assuming the Nets would want to take on a longer-term contract in return. But what if Swift doesn't get moved, that there is little or no interest, as has been reported. What value does he hold for New Jersey this season? Not an easy question to answer.

And what do you do with all the other PFs if he DOES decide to play up to his potential now and then?

@mt57
Good question. You hope that competition leads to better performances all around.

His rep is so bad no one even wants him for cap room. Oh well

Wow, the article on Swift was more comprehensive than his career! How can you guys spend this much time on a guy who has done so little — ahh, the intrigue of talent. He is in a downward spiral and this is his last shot. But players do not change that drastically: he is what he is. He is another sub average player trying to be the Nets PF. His best chance is to find a niche as a role player, a la a Christian Laetner or Juan Howard. Somehow, I don’t think he has what it takes to do what those two did with their careers.

I like Stro… He should stay, maybe if the team gets a boost he can hitch a ride and maybe give himself a better rep.

In retrospect, we should have kept Jason Collins. At the very least, JaColl could tutor Brook Lopez on defense. Besides, JaColl is still more tradeable than Swift.

i hope swift has a career year as long as he doesnt take time away from swat and boone and brook and the rest of the bigs. hopefully he can be efficient early to get teams to notice him and maybe he could net us something nice at the deadline. would be nice if we could package him and trent for one expiring pick.
its just amazing at the talent that the guy has yet has never been a basketball player. he should go on tour with and1

Trading for Swift doesn’t look real swift right now. IF he could play up to his potential it would be a huge plus for the Nets because the young guys could play behind him for a year and one of them could prove ready to step up by next year.
Here is my question though. How is the dribble drive to Swift’s advantage? My knowledge is admittedly limited so I would appreciate any advice. I think that Stro’s best chance to thrive would be with the Kidd-led Princeton offense where he would get opportunities to cut to the basket to throw down jams a la K-Mart. Now, with the new offense led by Devin and VC…the guards are going to be the main characters and they are going to drive and kick it out to perimeter shooters….and Stro can not shoot as far as I was able to determine.

@ Spartan, I think what the article meant is that the dribble drive offense is simpler to understand as compared to the Princeton offense which really involved a lot of cutting and reading (which I guess Swift had a hard time picking up) Our offense wouldn’t really be purely drive and kick, but it would be simpler, thus possibly allowing Swift to focus more on being productive as compared to him thinking about where to cut, where to be etc etc.

He needs a big name coach to work him over and get the potential out of him and onto the floor. We are challenged in that area. He’s out in the next deal or at the trade deadline after LFrank nails him to the bench.
