Nets Win Summer League Opener

The Nets defeated the Magic 86-74 Monday night in Orlando. Utah State's Jaycee Carroll, starting at point guard, led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while also grabbing seven boards and dishing out five assists. Each of the Nets' 2008 draft picks finished with double-figures: Chris Douglas-Roberts had 15 points on 7-of-14, Ryan Anderson finished with 14, shooting 2-for-6 from downtown, and Brook Lopez came off the bench to score 10 points. Lopez also blocked three shots, but he had zero rebounds and five fouls in 20 minutes of action. Vets Sean Williams and Maurice Ager combined for just six points. The Nets held the Magic to just 32 percent shooting, allowed just 18 points in the paint, and won the rebounding battle, 39-28.

Anyone watched that streamed video? That Jaycee Carroll made me sick. The last thing I wanted to see was a PG who didn’t even try to get others involved. Both Brook and Swat got so little touches when that guy was on the court.

that guy Jaycee Carroll won that game…Brook got a lot of touches and so did CDR…SWAT was sleeping 99% of that game…he didn’t even set picks…oh man he was so bad…i just hope he gets his act together…

those announcers were the 2 most annoying people i’ve ever heard. carroll definitely shot too much.

by drmagoo on Jul 7, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

He’s 6-2. I don’t think he’s going to score like that against real NBA competition. If he wants to play in the league, he probably needs to learn to be a point guard. And from what I saw, he surely wasn’t a point guard tonight.

by NetsDaily on Jul 7, 2008 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

I liked the Nets today, although I did see some lack of enthusiasm in the way they tackled the game. Also, I see no reason why Slaughter was given the opportunity to play in the Summer league, he really looks bad near the other players. And one question, did the announcers of nba.com annoyed only me? They were annoying, unenthusiastic, and really unprofessional in their broadcast.

Sean Williams – I don’t like his attitude for this summer league. He looks like he feels he’s above all of this and instead of taking opportunity to improve his offensive skill, he looks exactly like the same Sean in offense from last year. In defence he was the same swatting guy we know. He needs to dominate this, he’s easily the best player out there. 5/10

Jaycee Caroll – I liked this guy, he could be signed because he certainly can score. The thing is that in an NBA season, one cannot have a perfect night every single game, and if continues to shoot and drive in when he is missing, then we’ll be in trouble. He needs to share the rock way more, but cannot deny he can get into the score sheet and on the line. Just learn to pass the ball J. 7/10

Brook Lopez – He put some surprisingly good defensive plays, but was a bit LOST on offence, and to me, he even looked soft. Didn’t get the ball much though. He need to adjust to the NBA and then we’ll see the true Brook. 6/10

Chris Douglas Roberts – He was really good in offence, he can handle the ball and slash in for a quick basket. He played way better then a #40 draft pick. Will probably be a huge steal. I saw him disappear from play sometimes, but looks promising. 7/10

Ryan Anderson – I really liked this guy tonight. He’s unselfish, long and can shoot the ball. He could become a really good scorer in the NBA. I am looking at a more skilled, tallerand refined Nachbar. Probably will be the Nets’ rookie most ready to contribute straight away. His defence is however just non-existant. Need to improve that 8/10

Others – The Others all looked common. No one really shined. I still hate the way the announcers were talking about Uta and still cannot udnerstand why Slaughter’s there. Hodge wasn’t impressing at all.

Do you agree?

by Carlos on Jul 7, 2008 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

CDR looks promising- he certainly has a good BB IQ. He’ll contribute as a spark off the bench. I like that he is not timid but he doesn’t play out of control.

Lopez plays strong. He needs more experience and some more upper body strength. He needs to learn how to work to get post position.

Anderson is a keeper. He will be a good player off the bench with his shooting. He also is a good rebounder- who pursues the ball out of his area. His shot is smooth.

Ager did not show me anything in the time I saw him.

SWAT just doesn’t understand how to play the game. He plays decent defense. I look forward to seeing how he responds tomorrow after not playing well tonight.

Jaycee Carroll- he has some balls, but he pounded the ball too much. He would make a good European player.

Please can someone say the boxscore!?!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jul 7, 2008 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

I would give Brook a 7 or 8. He looked good defensively and I think some of his lack of offensive production came from the absolute lack of ball movement and his lack of touches for much of the game. He looked good when he got the ball in the post, but he took to many long jumpers. Sean was definitely disappointing, although he got very very few touches from what I saw.

by John on Jul 7, 2008 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

Just added the boxscore above, Pedro.

by NetsDaily on Jul 7, 2008 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

The box score has not been put up on OrlandoMagic.com yet.
Rough numbers scoring wise from what I saw and what the commentators mentioned are:

Jaycee Carroll had around 20, Ryan Anderson put up a couple of 3s with around 13-15 points, CDR’s scoring was close to Anderson’s, Brook had 9 if I recall, I may have missed a basket. Everyone else had a few points here and there, nothing significant from what I recall but I could be wrong.

by John on Jul 7, 2008 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

I was fairly close. The biggest thing that jumps out for me from the box score was Brook Lopez with 0 rebounds, he is definitely going to have to step up that aspect of his game.

by John on Jul 7, 2008 10:03 PM EDT reply actions

Sean Williams was aweful. Imagine, he started for us last year! Ugh. The energy of CDR and Anderson was awesome as was the little point guard. Lopez has a ways to go, but should do better in a more structured offense with real inside play. He’s kind of lost out there with all the smaller, athletic players.

by geo on Jul 7, 2008 10:04 PM EDT reply actions

those commentators were HILARIOUS!

by Gr8 on Jul 7, 2008 10:04 PM EDT reply actions

The biggest thing that jumps out for me is Orlando’s 18 points in the paint. The Nets desperately need to recommit to defense. And it can’t hurt to start with Summer League.

Hey Carlos, I nominate you for your own column on Nets Daily. Thanks!

by gizzy on Jul 7, 2008 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

sean williams was pretty bad and the announcers called him out for that. i read on njnets.com that he said he’s going to dominate the summer league and i didn’t see any domination he was the one getting dominated by scrubs. Brook lopez was great his defense was good and he boxed his guys out thats what collins did for us. on offense he was good too he made some tough shots. CDR was great i was impressed but not surprised also ryan anderson was good in his first game..maurice ager is horrible he missed so many shots and he never passed the ball up lopez got pissed at him 2. Carroll was good i dont know why you all are hating on him he isnt a point guard but he did a good job i thought and i would never think he would have 22 7 and 5 thats great numbers. and also that chinese dude did a good job i dont remember his name though

by Ben on Jul 7, 2008 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

I actually think Brook is pretty good. He had too few touches in the game just because the little guards could not (or did not try) to give him the ball. There were couple times he was forced to take the shot because of shot clock. It was to my surprise that he had no rebounds, because I felt like he did well defensively. I am sure if there’s a pure PG to run the show, he should be able to put up 12-15 quality shots in the game.

by Ken on Jul 7, 2008 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

Sean Williams really needs to step up. Also, I did not see the whole game but when I did, and Brook Lopez had an iso in the post, it did not look like he had great moves to get closer to the basket. He would try to back in, but was unable and would had to settle for a fadeaway. But those were only on select plays that I saw him. The key for Brook is to get deeper positioning, because down low he has a better heigth advantage than most of his opponents and would be able to score more. Also, I like Brook’s face up jump shot. I really like Ryan Anderson, although I did see him airball one shot but that’s going to happen and it’s all right but whenever he is open it always looks like he will nail the shot. I honestly did not see much of CDR. I saw SWAT block a lot of shots, too bad it was during a continuation. Thought that Carroll did not pass the ball enough. Hopefully we will see a better game tomorrow that has a smooth offense rather than a team just playing pick-up ball.

by Jay on Jul 7, 2008 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

Sean shouldn’t feel he’s above anything, his a** is toiling in the summer league while Josh Boone is enjoying the summer.

He better stop smoking

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 7, 2008 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

I liked what I saw with the guys that we drafted, here are the scores I give.

CDR played very well, both offensively and defensively. 8/10

Ryan Anderson shot the ball well tonight, and his defense isn’t as bad as I thought. He probably could’ve gotten more points if other people had pass him the ball when he was open. However, he needs to work on his ball handling skills. 7.5/10

Brook Lopez didn’t play that well on the first half because he didn’t get too many touches. However he did play a lot better in the second half when he did get more touches. Although he didn’t get any rebounds, he did help box out almost every time.
7.5/10

Caroll did have a nice stat at the end of the game, but thats all that is… stats. I think he focused too much on scoring for himself instead of setting up his teammates. Since he is playing the point I expected him to set up more plays, but he didn’t. I think he be better off just catching and shoot, like a spot up sg.
7/10

SWAT didn’t dominate the game like he said he would, however I did see some veteran leadership in this game. A couple times he helped out the rookies and other teammates. He got very few touches in this game, and I think he is definitely playing out of position.
6/10

As for everyone else… no one really stand out from the bunch, however I did like the japanese kid, Yuta. He only played 5 mins but I want to see him get a little more minutes in the next game.

by LetsGoNets on Jul 7, 2008 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

How does Brooke Lopez finish with 0 rebounds?

by VCforTHREE on Jul 7, 2008 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

CDR played the most minutes of anyone today because of his energy level on both ends

by The Pharmacist on Jul 7, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

NO!!!!….Just kiddin Carlos, you made some great points, but how do you know what Sean’s attitude was like.. Did he do an interview? Just wondering

Did Sean Williams Play? I didn’t see him…JC is tring to to get paid….don’t hate on the brother, he is agressive. CDR is no joke, It’s a wonder he can play with that huge a..s chip on his shoulder. Ryan can shoot the rock, even if it is a flatliner. I guess Julius will get his chance to play tomorrow. Brook had a few nice moments, but I want to see him play like a “BIG”. PUT SEAN IN THE GAME…DAMMIT!!!
This spam arithmetic is hard….it takes me forever to submit a comment

Sean Williams against Michael Beasley tomorrow. If Swat can’t get up for that, then he’s not a basketball player.

by Bapopik on Jul 8, 2008 12:39 AM EDT reply actions

Well Sean did play, and if you looked at him close, he was yawning all the time. Now don’t get me wrong, I love #51, but for example, you could see the Nets running a play on the right bottom corner of the paint where the big guy puts his pick on the free throw line then rolls to the corner to get the ball in the post. Brook Lopez was doing it all the time, and Williams sometimes was badly doing his pick, and roll very slowly to the corner. Most of all he wasn’t even jumping to take the rebound, and also always trailing in offence.

He’s a great player, and tonight he needs to show Miami who’s the boss.

by Carlos on Jul 8, 2008 6:44 AM EDT reply actions

Carrol really can shoot i hope he continue the good play and make the roster.

by VCMVP on Jul 8, 2008 6:55 AM EDT reply actions

We need someone to stretch the d, maybe if he makes the team he can play off the ball but i’m not a fan of shoot first PGs that can’t create

I didnt see the game but I am very pleased with the reviews of this Mr. CDR. i like the fact that he’s angry, i like the fact that he feels he has something to prove, and i like the fact that he is aggressive on both ends of the floor. We need a guy like that on the Nets, a guy who actually gives a DAMN about his performance. All of the rookies need to follow his lead, and so do the other guys on the team.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 8, 2008 10:06 AM EDT reply actions

i think it helps cdr that he was on a winning team making to the finals. when you’re part of something that wins, its tough to swallow when you or your team doesn’t do well. hopefully he can keep up the stellar play

by haileechen on Jul 8, 2008 10:34 AM EDT reply actions

Carroll had a great game. 22 pts (led team), 7 boards (led team), 5 assists (led team) while going 7-13 from the floor and 8-9 at a the line. Not to mention he only played 19 minutes (less than all the other starters).

I hope he can keep this up because he could be a great addition to the roster.

by Smith on Jul 8, 2008 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

I think you guys are being fooled by Carolls stats.
I saw the whole game, he definitely can score… but right now its only against rookies and d-leaguers. I doubt he can do the same things that he did in a real game against professionals.

Most of the time he holds the ball for too long… trying to create shot for himself first. When he can’t find a shot that’s when he decided to pass, that’s where his assists come from.

I’m not saying he’s a bad player… I’m just saying he’s not a pg.

by LetsGoNets on Jul 8, 2008 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

i thought sean dominated the paint, and scared the magic from driving. he hardly got any shot attepmts, cause carrol never passed the ball.

but he sure is dominating beasley right now. he is doing it all.

by mina on Jul 8, 2008 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

the nets still cant defend the 3 point line. agaisnt the magic and the heat. thats a serious coaching problem. right now in the league the shooters are deadly, and set up their offense to shoot 3’s. frank needs to do something about that. its a serious recurring problem.
