Deadline Passes With No Deal for Krstic

Nenad Krstic will play in Russia after all. The Nets tried to work a sign-and-trade deal with several teams Monday, but none came to fruition. The Bulls, Cavs and Grizzlies were among the teams that talked with the Nets. With Krstic signing in Europe, the Nets retain his rights, and he would still be a restricted free agent should he choose to return to the NBA, but the Nets must extend him a qualifying offer every summer.

Accordingly to “Sports On My Mind”:
July 29, 2008
New Jersey Nets power forward Nenad Krstic has signed a two-year $3 million euros deal with Triumpg Moscow. Krstic averaged 6.6 ppg and 4.4 rpg while averaging 18 minutes a game. Krstic injured his ACL in 2007, was slow to return to the Nets, and was limited to playing in 45 games last season.
Krstic becomes the sixth NBA player to bolt the league for eurodollars. The other players are: Josh Childress, Bostjan Nachbar, Juan Carlos Navarro, Jorge Garbajosa, Carlos Delfino and Primoz Brezec.
The $3 million euros deal is worth about $9 million in US dollars. Marc Cornstein, Krstic’s agent said he worked untile midnight trying to get the former Nets player at least a mid-level contract with an NBA team, but found no takers:
"At the end of the day, Triumph offered him the most love," Cornstein told ESPN.com. "This was too good of a deal to pass up for him

Kristic I wish you the best of luck in Russia…i really wanted you to stay and I hope that when you want to return to the NBA and when the Nets r willing to pay for you…i cannot wait to see you back in a Nets uniform…who knows maybe in a summer or two you will be that player that performed so well in the playoffs against the heat…best of luck nenad

I hope Nenad retains his form and comes back outta our price range forcing us to not match any offer. Besides I like Nenad but I don’t want him playin under Fire Frank either.

Bad move on his part and short sighted as well. For less $ now, he could’ve busted his ass in the NBA, returned to form, and gotten at least a mid level 3 year deal out of it. Instead, even if he does well in Russia, will have to work his way back to the NBA which will not be easy. Perhaps he’s a lot worse off than anyone is saying, and thinks he should take the $ while he can, but still, Russia?

Johnny,
Your wrong Nenad did the right thing in taking this offer its not like he’s under a 1 year show & prove under Russia its more like he can feel sorta close & home and mentally get his game back I don’t think its the physical part its more mental with him. Lets say he plays a full season with Russia and avgs 13 pts | 8 rebs | 2 blks
To me that’s good! Cause it shows he would have full trusted confidence in his physical form. Any numbers higher than that and we can try to retain his rights again.
Nenad will be back he has a lot to prove.
by 732_Franchise on Jul 29, 2008 7:07 AM EDT reply actions
@ 732, it’s “you’re wrong”
Sorry but Nenad will have a tough time making it back into the NBA with those averages in Russia, last I checked Nenad was not a shot blocker either.

I’ll miss his silky smooth jump shot: he was our best shooter! I’ll miss his moves inside, surprising at times. But I think he is not mentally ready to return to the NBA. I think he would need most of a season to get back to form and that’s too much of a risk. Hey, no team in the league was offering this guy anything near 9 mil a year – they weren’t even offering the Mid Level (about 6). Physically he has a long way to go and hopefully Kiki will visit Moscow over the next year and evaluate him. But once again we let three legitimate players walk without any compensation: Diop, Boki, Krstic. At least we retain some rights to Krstic. I can’t believe Yi will be as effective as Nenad was.

Johnny,
So your wrong again… That doesnt mean he cant block shots over seas? He can increase the skills on his intangibles over there trust me it will be good for him why would you want him to rehab his game under Frank? With whut 7-10 mins a game thats your version of coaching a injuried player? haha
by 732_Franchise on Jul 29, 2008 8:04 AM EDT reply actions
Nenad will make about $4.75 million this year, if these reports are correct.
I think this is a good deal for the Nets. Russia can serve as our minor league.

Peace to Curly and good luck.
I would have been happy if we could have gotten Lowry or Crittendon from Memphis in exchange for him…I knew a s&t would have been impossible though because his market value was garbage. That Bulls deal sounded good too, roster space and a 1st round pick? Oh well
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 29, 2008 9:21 AM EDT reply actions
We could’ve got Kyle Lowry or Jarvaris Crittenton memphis or possibly a future 1st round draft pick from bulls.

@johnny:
Don’t be a jerk. Netsdaily gets readers from around the world who are Nets fans, not all of whom can claim English as a first language. We’re all Nets fans here; go bring the hate to a Knicks site.
732 has a good point. Under Frank and the current roster composition, Krstic would not get the amount of playing time he would need to get his conditioning, confidence, and skills back to the same level he was at two years ago. It is to his benefit (and the Nets, if they try to get him back in a year or two) to go overseas where he can get much more playing time and regain his confidence and feel good about his game again.

@ johnny Says: You are on the money with your restraining remark about basketball and NBA, but you also are very much arrogant with “Learn English” remark (I’m talking about your respond to “732_Franchise Says:”). I hope you realize that NBA fans are all over the world and many people are posting from other country’s. It’s obvious that most of them are not fluent in English. Did you ever post in other language then English?
If you did please let me see it.

I knew that we weren’t going to pull something off last nite, I thought it was kinda funny how some of you thought that we could do a S&T for Josh Smith at the last minute.
But anyways… I think it’s a good thing for both the team and Kristic. The team clearly wont have enough playing time for Kristic to get back in shape and get his confidence back, and there’s no way that we can offer him much money. But with this Kristic can go get both in Russia, playing time which will help him build up his confidence and plus the money.
by LetsGoNets on Jul 29, 2008 10:38 AM EDT reply actions
I don’t think Kristic will have any problems getting back into the NBA. Kristic has already proven himself to be a quality NBA player. All he has to do is fully recover from his injuries and regain his confidence. Besides, stats in Europe and the NBA translate differently (Hollinger has written about this).
Tell me, how is sitting on the bench without playing time and getting paid less than market rate a good thing?

Thank you Chuck & Nodar Rode!
Johnny just sounds like somebody who doesn’t have a bit of NBA knowledge & to be honest I’m from Jersey homie get it right.
Chuck u have a point I know from experience how Nenad feels cause I was once in the Military (Army) and I partially torn my groin muscle in my left leg & it messed me up mentally cause I thought I was gonna heal up slowly & wrong and get sent to IRAQ to get OWNED. It takes a while to get that mental part back to align with the physical part.
Nodar Rode I just hope he can regain his composure over seas over 1 year cause it won’t happen with Frank.

Good move by Krstic. Take the money, and if he plays well enough and looks to be fully recovered from that knee injury, then next year or down the line he may be able to get the mid level deal he was looking for this season. Hopefully within a few years he will be back with the Nets.

This are very big ifs.. but if Yi (PF), Boone and Lopez © develop into good players, is there still a future for Krstic with the squad in a year or two?

@dollar bill
I agree about Memphis, I like Lowry a lot from what i’ve seen. I hear a lot of good things about Javaris Crittenton. I’ve just never seen him up close.

Lowry would have been nice. But I think management still believes in Curly…they are essentially “stashing” him in Europe while he regains form. We didn’t have the PT to rehab Curly AND develop Yi/Anderson/Lopez/SWAT. We still own his NBA rights as long as we offer him the qualifying. So, if the Lopez/Yi experiment doesn’t pan out, we have options at a VERY important position.

If we don’t need him in a yr/2, we can still S&T him.

Chad Ford says Krstic was having an all-star year before his injury in 2007? what planet is he reporting from? the injury was in Dec 2006 and Krstic was just rounding into form after a slow start
on another note: now we lost Sly too…omg..if min-Sly can’t be resigned then i am totally with biged and brooklyn bob…it won’t be worth going to games this year

News flash—blockbuster deal—we sent Sly to the St. Louis Cardinals for Fredbird. Addition by subtraction.
by jabez on Jul 29, 2008 1:59 PM EDT reply actions
As far as I am concerned, enough is enough. Management needs to make a dramatic move (i.e., for a scoring vet who is not just a role player) to convince season ticket holders to invest for the next two years. There may be a method to their madness — clear the decks for 2010, develop young players, and build a team of "character" — but don’t do it on my time. This is not the typical rebuild that fans must accept is required periodically in professional sports. Why? Because this team — and its NJ fans — have only two years left at most, and are living on borrowed time as it is. If the team wants to pack it in until BRK, God bless, but don’t expect me to pay for it. The clock is ticking . . . one of these "few more moves" that the front office keeps speaking about better be big . . . or I’ll be getting my money back before training camp starts.

lol jabez, another Ratner cost reduction Yormark marketing move? obviously there are a lot of cardinals that live in the area…not sure how many seats they will actually buy though…i imagine Fredbird is another soft bum(haven’t seen him in action, but does that mean i can’t diss him?)
by Spartan on Jul 29, 2008 3:39 PM EDT reply actions
@ jabez
If memory serves correct, back in the late 80’s, Sports Illustrated rated all the mascots in the major sports. Freebird finished last. (Phillie Phanatic and SD Chicken tied for the top spot). But this was before Sly’s time, and besides, like you said, it’s an addition by subtraction move!
As for Nenad, glad the Nets still hold his rights. We’ll need his “sorta close to” All Star ability after Yi’s upcoming 10/4 season.

Why did we give Dooling and Najera between 3.5 – 5 million per and we couldn’t give kristic that? I am starting to get concerned about who is going to score for us. I hope the rookies step up in a big way and/or that Yi lives up to his 6th overall selection.
by Justin on Jul 29, 2008 9:03 PM EDT reply actions
Kristic obviously didn’t have much value in the NBA right now. He said he was offered about 3 years for less than the mle. But no one was really in hot pursuit. Hell it looks like even Kwame Brown is about to sign a 4 mil a year deal with the Pistons. Nenad lost a lot of value last year when he looked so weak. At least we retain his rights and his goal is to get back to the NBA.
