Dooling Deal to League for Approval

NBA sources report the Nets will seek league approval of the Keyon Dooling sign-and-trade as early as Monday. The Magic will first sign Dooling to a three-year contract worth between $10 and $11 million...with a partial guarantee in the third year. They will then ship the 6'-3" guard north in return for the $3.3 million trade exception from the Jason Kidd trade and cash. Not everyone thinks it's a good idea.

Great addition. With Dooling and Najera we have two defensive minded players off the bench who can also score. Great move. So now, when VC is defensively challenged by players like Wade, Crawford, Ginoubli, etc., we can insert Dooling to guard the wing players and move VC to the 3. With Harris and Dooling we have two solid wing defenders. LFrank finally gets his man.

What’s the nature of that partially guaranteed 3rd year?

by croc on Jul 20, 2008 10:53 AM EDT reply actions

this team is just about set.

Lopez, anderson, yi, s williams, boone, carter, harris, dooling, najera, m.williams, CDR, ager, hassel, swift, van horn, (maybe kristic)

It’s a small guarantee, a “pittance”, said Dave D. I have to assume we’re talking about $300,000 or so.

There are still 2 deals that will equal 1 left on the board. We still need that one player who will create agressive offensive action in the paint. We dont have that guy on the roster yet. We should be set by Aug3rd. I like Dooling over najear or hayes. What this trade will also show everyone within a very short time span that LFrank is not a legitimate NBA head Coach. But that could also put us in a wait until next year mode if Rod wont pull the trigger quick enough and fire him.

All I ask of everyone on this site especailly the Little larry Lovers please dont go into he needs time to get use to all the new players, remember this guy is going around personally recruiting and calling these guys. The last thing I want to hear is he needs more time to acclimate the guys he personally wanted.

All of you have talked so much about how Kidd and RJ tanked the season on him. Maybe they just realized this guy sucked as a coach.

that Heat article was very weak.

“dooling is not the answer.. i just feel it in my gut”

by NetsFan on Jul 20, 2008 12:14 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, a 2 for one deal should seal it. I think with that we’ll be very competitive if everyone plays hard.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 20, 2008 1:03 PM EDT reply actions

so has the Magic GM been involved in this deal yet?

also, i just want to say this: wow look how cheap the Magic and Heat are, they don’t want to spend money to keep Dooling,… according to some posters here, Ratner is the only one in the NBA to not want to go over the luxury tax; Ratner doesn’t want to compete this year, so if you were Heat or Magic fans would you be whining the same way? how about if you were Nuggets fans, gosh they must be tanking this season for sure giving away Camby and Najera…or Clippers mishandling the Brand signing…it goes on and on…the Nets are having one of the best off seasons and yet it is whine whine, this team will not be worth watching, management is incompetent and cheap….sorry about my rant but i will have another coming concerning Frank and all the whining

Cool. Dooling is a great addition. when he is on fire he is on fire! great signing/trade

by Justin on Jul 20, 2008 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

I think the Miami guy is on to something. At 28 he should be in his prime. And the Magic had just about the weakest backcourt in the NBA but he could not become a FT player. It is puzzling why two teams who observed this guy close up have let him walk rather than offer a salary that is well below league average. And what other offers did he have? Haven’t heard his name a lot in rumors the way some others get talked up. Rod has a poor track record on free agent signing. Besides Mikki Moore, hard to think of one that panned out.

Good afternoon my friends. I want to play for Nets. Nets look like international team now, no? I’m international player. I like Nets. I ask my agent for trade possibilities to Nets. I don’t care how… I just want to play for Nets.

My agent tell me either this one…

http://www.realgm.com/src_tradechecker/3/

Or maybe this one…

http://www.realgm.com/src_tradechecker/3/

He say though Bulls will most likely go for the latter…

He tell me he will talk to Rod and Kiki about these possibilities. I don’t care which one… I just want to play for Nets! I love New Jersey! I play for you!

Or maybe Nets do sign and trade with Krstic for me? I don’t know. Which one you want to play for Nets my friends?

Krstic or me?

I want to play for YOU my friends!

I like new team of Nets. Everyone sign there… Everyone trade there… Everyone new there.

I like new team of Nets. New people shoot very very good. They shoot 3 points… They shoot jumpshots… They shoot very good everywhere. New people play very very good defense.

Najera, Hayes, and Dooling come off bench and shoot lights out and score really really good. They play defense whole game and hustle and run around like crazy guys and they throw their bodies all over the place like crazy guys.

I LIKE! I do same things!!! I do same things my friends!

I like new team of Nets… I want to play for Nets my friends!

I dont get it. Who thinks its not a good idea? I read all the articles.

by DJ on Jul 20, 2008 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

great pickup for us. i like how the 3rd year doesnt interfere with 2010. i think orlando improved by getting pietrus instead of dooling, but dooling is a good talent that they lost. maybe he just didnt mess well with the coaches idk, but hes a solid player who i think will benefit us. he is aggressive and obviously is a combo guard so that makes him more valuable.

surprised nobody offered him a nice contract. i guess that might say something, but i dont think its a negative thing. i think teams are just trying to save money if they are not dealing with a top tier player or a player with a lot of potential.

we may be rebuilding and not in a position to compete for a deep playoff run, but moves like this along with our rookies i think still make this an exciting upcoming season. cannot wait for the next couple of moves and the RMV to start tomorrow

Ron Artest for Stromile Swift and Maurice Ager.

It works, but I don’t think the Kings would go for it. I also wouldn’t wanna have Ron Artest corrupting and being a bad influence to all of our young guys. He would be a great fit with the team on the court, but I don’t know about off the court.

I would rather have Andres Nocioni.

Andres Nocioni for Keith Van Horn’s expiring contract and Trenton Hassell.

That works as well, but I don’t think the Bulls would go for it. If Rod and Kiki can pull that off, THEY WOULD BE GENIUSES!!!

Or as far as other options, we can also try:

Andres Nocioni for Stromile Swift, Marcus Williams, and Maurice Ager.

Although I would hate to see Marcus Williams go and I would love to see him given another chance, we already got Keyon Dooling and not enough minutes for all the young guys.

The whole Krstic situation is what we have to take care of next. Do we keep him or dealt him in a sign-and-trade package???

This is what’s going to be very interesting…

What BigEd missed in his euphoria for this deal is that it was Frank who pushed for Dooling in 2005 and Frank who pushed for Dooling this summer.

I am predicting that Frank will be the coach of the year.

by Net Income on Jul 20, 2008 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

Well thats maybe a longshot …. but if they’re highly competetive ( and not many expect that ) he will get some vote s …

by Stevie on Jul 20, 2008 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

I happen to agree with Sam Smith, and I think we should begin to curb our enthusiasm, if you remember he was the guy who picked the Nets to finish 9th and out of the playoffs last year. If he says were gonna be awful I think we should listen.

The Nets really don’t since it doesn’t look like they’ll get to Brooklyn and a new arena until maybe 2011, if at all. We assume they will since they now are officially as lame as a duck with a broken leg.

Having traded Jason Kidd in February, which was a terrific move in swindling the Dallas Mavericks out of Devin Harris and a No. 1 pick in 2010 that should be in the lottery with the Mavs in full collapse, and Jefferson recently, the Nets are in full rebuilding mode.

There’s an old scouting saying around the NBA that "if you are going to make a mistake, make it big."

It generally means if you aren’t sure between two players, pick the big guy. Though usually it comes out to simply be big mistakes as most big guys not selected extremely high in the draft flame out.

The Nets, though, are giving the theory a run.

They’ve probably got a half-dozen young big men who could be centers in the East with 7-footers Nenad Krstic and rookie Brook Lopez, Yi, who probably is a small forward, sort of Brad Sellers-esque, at 6-11, Josh Boone and Sean Williams from the 2007 draft and 2008 rookie Ryan Anderson, a 6-10 combo forward. Plus, they’ve got Stromile Swift.

One popular theory about building a team is to get a good lead guard and young big men.

In Harris and the assortment with and around rookie Lopez, who surprisingly dropped to No. 10 in the first round and raised some questions in doing that, the Nets can’t claim a stud big man. But they have the pieces that perhaps someone breaks through. It’s worth a shot as they are going to stink.

In announcing a move to Brooklyn a few years back, I felt they should have broken it up a year ago when Kidd’s value was higher and they didn’t have to re-sign Vince Carter.

But ownership felt it could avoid being a lame duck franchise — wrong! — and there was a chance in the weak East to do something with a Big Three. That wasn’t a bad idea, though it didn’t work as they had the wrong Big Three.

They’ll try to move Carter in the next few seasons and I can see someone seeking a big name, like the Clippers at some point, making an offer, perhaps with someone like Cuttino Mobley with just a shorter contract like the Richard Jefferson deal. Mobley and Tim Thomas, with contracts coming off in the summer of 2010, would be ideal as the Nets can kick back a draft pick as well.

In the meantime, the Nets are going to be awful.

by biged on Jul 20, 2008 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

Sam Smith is an idiot and we should just ignore him .

There are way more "reliable " experts . I mean come on he expects the Knicks to compete and the Nets to be awful .

Have you looked at the Knicks roster lately ? Thats still the same team it was last year with the same locker room cancers. D’Antoni isn’t going to change that.

by Stevie on Jul 20, 2008 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

The knicks will probably be about a dismal as the nets, both fighting for last place. Come on, next year will be exciting with all the new faces, but how are we going to compete in our division? Boston, Philly, Toronto and then way back on the bottom is good old knicks and nets. Why the knicks might be better: D’antoni’s style will resurrect Curry and it will help players like Chandler and Robinson a lot. They will score and be much less predictable on offense. If we win 35 with this mix of players it will be a miracle. The rookies will still be rookies and will make lots of mistakes. And, I just don’t think SWilliams is going to turn it around next year. He did little or nothing in summer league. I just don’t buy that Yi is going to be a big force: yes, in spurts, but night in and night out? So we have a solid backcourt and then big, big, big questions at 3, 4, and 5: All role players, no real complete players.

by geo on Jul 20, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

fans shouldnt take beat writers seriously. almost none of them understand anything about the game. they just report what they hear and see. so dont take their ideas too seriously. they are not esperts.

espn and nba.com thats a different stroy.

biged,

dont forget that sam smith also thought the bulls will win the east last year. how did that pan out.

anyways, the guys that i think that will traded are swift, kvh’s contract, and boone. marcus will stay as thrid pg. ager will be bought out.

by mina on Jul 20, 2008 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

the fact is about frank, no matter what happened last year, his team showed the least amount of effort on the court compared to any other team. they had some crusching losses last year to much worse teams. twice to memphis and the clippers, once to the wolves, miami at home, the kings at home, the hornet loss at hoime cause frank took out sean and inserted collins instead who fouled a 4 poijnt play, and three times to the lowly knicks.

if they would of just played hard ad taken care of business they are probably the 4th or 5th seed in the east last year.

frank just doesnt command the respect necessary to coahc an nba team. as rj, kidd, and diop. they’ll tell you the same. all he’s good for was kissing kidd’s and rj’s butts, and trying to do everyything in his power to have them accept hoimn as a coach.

all i can say, kiki has put his finger prints on this team. he changed everything that thorn and stefanski did in their last 7 yrs in one summer. i just think frank isnt a kiki type of guy. and soon they wiull give him his walking papers. its imnevatable. most of the coahces that got fired last few years, are either rehired, or will get rehired.

i can bet anything, if frank is fired, he will never coach in the nba as a head coach again. he’s a project that so far has gone south. hge doesnt have the intangibles that make great coaches. he’s not a motivator, he doesnt gain respect, and no matter what his knowledge if the game will be limited since he’s never played the gme at any level, and since he cant even dribble a ball. plus he showed that his x’s and o’s were just horrible last year. another year of that, and he’s a surefire gonner.

by mina on Jul 20, 2008 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

I hope Avery, or Flip Sanders is still around mid season.

by jerrod on Jul 21, 2008 1:20 AM EDT reply actions

They brought this on themselves. Brian Scott should have never been fired. All he did was win games and improve the team and what did he get for his efforts . . . a pink slip. Now, Rod, his managament team and, us fans get to watch one of the truly better young coaches improve and grow in New Orleans. Looking at what he’s accomplishing in New Orleans makes me wonder what could have been if he had not been fired. The man has developed his young players and have them believing in his system. I know he made some mistakes here but he was a first time head coach, that was to be expected. I just don’t get how patient they are with Lawrence Frank but, booted Brian Scott after taking us to two NBA Final appearances. We screwed ourselves and now we are stuck with Coach frank.
