Hayes and Najera Join the Party

Jarvis Hayes and Eduardo Najera met the media after signing their contracts Wednesday. Najera said that he's here to provide a defensive mindset and push the rookies. Hayes came to New Jersey for playing time. Lawrence Frank says that with the two additions, the Nets are stressing character, competitiveness and passion. The Nets signed the two with exceptions--the LLE for Hayes and part of the MLE for Najera.

Yay!? Honestly, I don’t know how this team is going to be. They may be good and surprise everyone like the Sixers did, or they might be bad as expected and grab some more high lottery picks. We’ll see though.

In my opinion, hustle, passion and especially confidence trump talent in the NBA. Also, sometimes you need to be brought out from under the shadow some stars egos cast over the team.

The most successful teams over the past 10 years would suggest you are right and once that chemistry is broken, things go south.

Agreed, at least we’ll have a group of players with something to prove other than triple double # 100, and it will be more exciting to watch. I don’t know why they were insisting on 34 year old Marcus Camby unless the thought is to keep the Nets competitive-ish for two years along with Vince and then get Lebron and move on. Camby is injury prone, a big baby, offensively challenged and overpaid, a Kiki special. I’d rather watch the youngsters duke it out, although if Marcus is traded I won’t be sad.

@ Jay
I agree with u, i dont no y but that article gave me a lot of hope for next season the addition of those guys and what they said is getting me excited. im not gonna lie im pretty pumped. i think our season can go a number of ways:
1.we can be a typical rebuilding team, that is at the bottom of the conference, an under 30 win team
      2. well be a mediocre average team in the east and just miss out on the playoffs
      3. or maybe energy and high character guys like najera can inspire us on both sides of the floor and push our young guys to play the game the right game. i mean hes determined to teach and mentor our kids, the more i think about it hes an excellent addition to our team, he maybe not contribute a lot on the court but in lockerroom and the practice gym, is where he’ll thrive. maybe carter takes the lead, and devin and yi continue to develope, we could easily put together a run and scare some people in the east, we could be similar to a Philly or ATL.

i dont i just dont think theres any point in being negative about the upcoming season. y not dream a little bit, if attitudes like najera’s can spread to the entire team theres no reason y we should be in the playoff hunt

Character is very important…Spurs Detroit and Celtics def. prove that point…even Hornets prove that point…anywayz so who is gonna start at 3? Hayes? Simmons? And they say we r not done yet so we r gonna make more moves…what r we gonna get back from these moves ? A starting 3? or a backup 1-2 ?

by LeoN on Jul 16, 2008 2:10 PM EDT reply actions

Like all of you have hinted at above, I love these two signings. Two major character guys who play for one thing: To win. The types of guys we sorely missed last year.

by Tom on Jul 16, 2008 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

Hornets do not have character.

From Chris Paul flapping his yap and telling Jason Kidd “you can’t f***ing guard me” and just being a cocky loudmouth (except on camera, because he is smart enough not to do that) to Tyson Chandler being a wannabe bully on the court, I hardly see how they have character

by NetsFan on Jul 16, 2008 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think it’s character as in the sense of being a lawabiding citizen / humble role model reading to kids, etc., it’s character in the sense of passion and work ethic. Kobe, MJ, Kenyon and JKidd do not have high grades for character in the former sense but they all do in the latter, for example. I agree with them as to passion and work ethic. ut they are not really being consistent because RJ and Boki had a strong work ethic and they are both gone.

by mt57 on Jul 16, 2008 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

ofcourse hornets have charcter and swager…they went 7 games with spurs…u don’t go 7 games with spurs if u don’t have character…and u can’t ****ing guard me is a very good showing of character…if kidd had that maybe he wouldn’t lose…

by LeoN on Jul 16, 2008 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

Acquiring players with character is a lot cheaper than acquiring players with talent. But it won’t do much for the won-loss record.

by brooklyn bob on Jul 16, 2008 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Bob giving Najera 4 years is not cheap…NETS def. outbid everybody else for his services…

by LeoN on Jul 16, 2008 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

the great teams are able to mould character with talent. but character alone wont do jack.

its on the coaching staff tio mould the two together. yera boston, detroit, and the spurs do have charcter, but they also hppen to have the most talent in the NBA.

with a young team, its all on the coaching staff. where’s scott when you need him.

i just cant see midgets like frank, hill, and barisse do anything. if anything im sure none of them are in the plan of 2010 and beyond.

and again, the beat writers insits that sean and marcus will be traded.

first off how are they gonna trade marcus when they dont have another backup point. if they dooling maybe, but even then marcus is the most pure pg out of harris, and dooiling.

anbd sean, well as reported from denver, the nets offered boone not sean. i think you beat writers are trying to read frank instead of unpredictable kiki. all the players frank liked got traded. kidd, rj, collins, allen, and wright, which was once frank’s starting lineup even though vc was playing.

again, study the rsoter.boone is now very dispensable with nejara here. this is a rebuilding team, and sean fits the billofrebuilding.hisupside is huge.

imwilling to bet that boone oges before sean and even marcus. i know that thorn and kiki are high on them. and they did start to emphasize on development causethey probablythought that coaching staff has been unableto develop their taLent.

some of you beat wirters just dont make any seans basketball wise. even though it was reported that booone wasdangled for camby, guys likeiazzone, kerber, and d’allessandro are still insisting that sean is on the block before boone.

trash in trash out. These guys are really gonna turn us around. you are what you are. STOP IT!!!! We need someone with talent and desire. Kiki and thorn are getting trumped by every other gm team in this league so far this summer.

I think Chris Paul has plenty of character…what he said isn’t exactly a lie!!!

And i don’t get why Boone is considered dispensible now that Najera is here…Najera will log time at Small forward, Boone is a legit 4-5 that if he gets starter minutes will average a double double…the lack of regard people on this site have for Josh is crazy, he was one of our best players last year…he needs to get tougher in the paint tho

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 17, 2008 9:55 AM EDT reply actions

i dont really know if rush is the character player were looking for why dont we look at j williams and carlos arroya i mean those are 2 goot point guards does anyone agree wit me

by mike on Jul 17, 2008 11:34 AM EDT reply actions

You’re right Mr DB. Josh should stay.

by Andrés on Jul 17, 2008 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

I actually agree with Mr. Dollar Bills and mina here, and I don’t think I would have ever said that before. Maybe it’s just a feeling that Boone doesn’t have that much upside? I’d like to see him stay too, though it does seem liek he’ll always be limited.
