Free Agent Scramble Begins Tuesday

The draft produced a wave of trades, but next week is likely to see more players moved as free agent talks can begin Tuesday (contracts can officially be signed on July 9). The Nets hope to add scoring to their young roster, particularly on the wings, as well as veteran depth--and protect their own free agents: Nenad Krstic, Boki Nachbar and Gana Diop. Don't expect another blockbuster like the RJ trade. There are names, starting with J.R. Smith.
- Thorn's roster review leads to decision to retool - Tom Canavan - AP
- Nets have plenty of holes to fill - Dave D'Alessandro - Star-Ledger
- Nets have new-look roster with Vince Carter still the main man - Julian Garcia - New York Daily News
- Nets rebuild for future with new-look frontcourt - Larry Fleisher - HoopsWorld
- Nets get younger, stronger up front - Al Iannazzone - The Record
- Nets happy with moves - Fred Kerber - New York Post

Find a way to get Mike Miller in a Nets Jersey, maybe Ron Artest mostly a do it all player.

Why would the nets want to resign Diop or Krstic? We have enough bigmen. I say let them go and go for a small forward like Ron Artest or Antawn Jamison.

nets have a shooter in anderson already. he’s gonna surprise a lot of people i’m telling you right now. he’s the leading scorer in the PAC10 (ahead of Mayo) guy can rebound as well and was 3 in the conference.

Lopez and Anderson are known mainly for their offense. Why I am not hearing we need a defender? This team won with its defense—and it lost when it failed to defend.

JR would probably start, but he doesn’t play D. Y can’t we find someone who plays D.

Michael Pietrus would B a nice pickup. He wants to play he can start here.

we should…sign diop for the mle…trade him to dallas…get bass in return along with using our trade exception…we lose salary …get a reallllly good promising young sg…and dallas gets their stupid diop..he cant score…just play def…we have too many centers now..with lopez williams and boone
we should also go for pietrus or artest for sf…
and if we cant get bass…go for jr..he can score
or just keep boki and nenad and get something from dallas for diop…i know cuban wnats him
by milan on Jun 28, 2008 2:23 PM EDT reply actions
Maybe I’m understanding you wrong, milan….but Brandon Bass isn’t a guard…he plays the 4 most of the time.
I agree about Pietrus…we deff. need a player like him, I also think Boki can be useful on this team still. Krstic and Diop are gone I think.

Easy on the caps, Ben. Seriously though, who do you guys think we should be targetting?

My favorite part of the offseason – speculation!
The way I see it the following players are as good as gone:
Diop
Krstic
Nachbar
As for who we sign I have no idea… Krstic should be S&T though I would guess… Any thoughts?

Jerrod,
I fully agree with you with James Jones he’s a 4 that can knock down the 3 imagine him in transition and he’s fully affective it will mess up a lot of defenses.
by 732_Franchise on Jun 28, 2008 7:04 PM EDT reply actions
i agree with james jones, except he isnt powerfoward 732, he would be a nice pickup he can consistently hit the three.
I like the idea of jr smith, the kid can flat out score but i dont think we should put to much money on him. We need a vet that can step into our rotation score and play good perimeter D. Oh and by the way jr smith isnt from Atlanta that would be Josh Smith, milan. Dude get ur facts straight bass a sg. haha

Do you think the nets will trade carter at one point during the season? and also i agree with the idea of bringing in JR Smith
by njnetsfan123 on Jun 28, 2008 9:35 PM EDT reply actions
JR smith is probably a bad idea even tho I am a big fan of his…he really demands the ball…he really doesn’t want to be a weakside shooter he wants to have the ball and drive in and create so idk…I rather get pietrus and he shoots the ball he defends…he is physical…he runs…he can finish…but that other guy James Jones is really NICE…he usually came of the bench tho…idk if he is ready to start…but he plays decent D and shoots lights out from 3…lets see how much money he will demand…and we better get kenyon dooling…
by Leon on Jun 28, 2008 11:40 PM EDT reply actions
JR Smith would be a bad mistake he’s too inconsistent on the defensive end & draws too many turnovers coming off the dribbling penetrating to the basket similar to Nachbar. If you really ask me these are a couple of players I think that would help the Nets this upcoming season. NO PARTICULAR ORDER
1.) SF Francisco Garcia – 12.3 ppg | 3.3 rebs | 39% 3pt FGs
2.) SF Ron Artest – 20.5 ppg | 5.8 rebs | 2.3 stls
3.) PF Chris Wilcox – 13.4 ppg | 7.0 rebs
4.) SF Andres Nocioni – 13.2 ppg | 4.2 rebs | 1.2 ast
5.) PG Kyle Lowry – 9.6 ppg | 3.6 ast | 1.1 stls
