Nets Take Ryan Anderson at #21

With the pick acquired in the Jason Kidd trade, the Nets selected Cal small forward Ryan Anderson. The Nets travelled to Philadelphia last week to take a look at the 6'-10" 20-year-old. He averaged 21 and 12 in the PAC-10, shooting better than 41% beyond the arc. With Lopez and Anderson, the Nets took two big men who combined for 40 and 20 last season. They're the youngest Nets in 25 years.

ESPN Insider

Draft Projection: Late first to early second

Similarities:

Ryan Anderson is still eligible to return to Berkeley.

Troy Murphy.

Notes: Anderson has declared for the 2008 NBA draft, but hasn’t hired an agent, preserving his college eligibility.

Positives: Excellent offensive player who can get it done both inside and out. Especially lethal from the perimeter. Shooting better than 40 percent from 3-point territory. Good rebounder. Nice touch on the inside. Excellent passer. Good basketball IQ. Has long arms which makes him play bigger than he is.

Negatives: Not a great athlete. He’s not a stiff by any means, but he doesn’t have that freakish athleticism that NBA scouts look for in big men. He’s going to need to add strength to play inside at the next level. So-so defender lacks the lateral agility to guard quicker players, and can get bruised by bigger opponents inside.

Summary: Anderson wasn’t highly touted coming out of high school and took many scouts by surprise with his stellar play his freshman season As a sophomore, he’s proven that he’s going to be a consistent go-to guy for Cal. Right now he’s firmly on the first-round bubble.

Supposedly we traded RJ because he was no longer a stud on D—-this guy can’t play D at all….great.

by MH on Jun 26, 2008 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Strange pick unless the Nets plan to play Anderson and/or Yi at the 3 …

by Stevie on Jun 26, 2008 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Meh…so many people I’d rather have. Arthur, Batum, Chalmers, Greene, CDR and so on

by Bear on Jun 26, 2008 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

WOW, WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GARBAGE. HOW THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO DEVELOPE OUR BIG MAN WHEN WE DRAFT A GUY LIKE THIS WITH ZERO UPSIDE. HE ADDRESSES ABOSLUTLEY NO NEEDS WHATSOEVER. IF WERE GOING TO WITH A BIG WHY NOT GO WITH SOMEBODY LIKE DARRELL ARTHUR OR KOUFOS. I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND Y WE DIDNT TAKE CDR OR DONTE GREENE A WING WITH POTENTIAL THAT WILL ACTUALLY PLAY AND HAS POTENTIAL. I APPLUADE THE FISR PICK WITH LOPEZ BUT HONESTLY WHAT WERE THEY THINKING. HES NOT EVEN GONNA PLAY AND EVEN IF HE DOES HES TAKING AWAY MINUTES FROM SWILL, JOSH BOONE AND LOPEZ. AT LEAST GET SOMEBODY THAT HAS A CHANCE AT CONTRIBUTING. IM PISSED

by Tim on Jun 26, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

DONTE GREENE or BATUM cmon we NEED A 3
The only thing im hoping for is that one of them slip to the 2nd round.

by Ricky on Jun 26, 2008 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

I am confused about this pick as well.

I think we have too many bigs on our roster. The only reason why I think the Nets drafted him was because of his consistent outside shooting from the perimeter.

I think with this pick it’s obvious that the Nets will trade away a lot of our bigs. I can definitely see Boone, Kristic, and Swift all get traded.

by shark on Jun 26, 2008 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

Well one dimensional shooting SF , could turn into a Kapono .

He’s a lights out shooter . Can’t do much more but shootings a big need.

by Stevie on Jun 26, 2008 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

can you say…draft lottery for at least the next 2 years?

by shark on Jun 26, 2008 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

It’s all about efficiency, and Ryan Anderson has it. He scores lights out from downtown(nba range) and that’s what we need. His height and quick release are a bonus.

by Special_Delivery on Jun 26, 2008 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

Guyz he is a great shooter…we need a shooter we don’t care what position he plays…we just need him to shoot…there are 1 000 000 wings who are cheap free agents but not many 6-10 guyz who shoot 40% from the three…

All about Rod Benson… Anderson is in the Boom Tho video.

how many big men do we have now? this is a total wtf to me

by Ken on Jun 26, 2008 10:09 PM EDT reply actions

Length and skill. 6’10 guys who can shoot NBA 3’s aren’t that easy to find, or to defend. He also averaged nearly 10 boards per game in the PAC 10, so he’s not entirely one-dimensional.

You’re not looking for a star at 21, or even a guaranteed starter on a good team. You’re hoping to find a guy who can do one thing really, really well for you. This kid looks like he’ll do that.

On the other moves, I think Bobby Simmons is going to be a keeper. He’s a deadly 3 point shooter on the wing. Yi is a very, very interesting player and well worth the investment here. This team was never going to get good again around Jefferson. Let it go and wish him luck.

Really, I love what they’re doing today. On top of the fact that they’re gonna have a ton of cap space in ’10.

by whozgotnext on Jun 26, 2008 10:10 PM EDT reply actions

Despite of the picks, i’m don’t get it how we trade Jefferson for only Yi and Simmons!?!? With the first pick of Milwakee I have agreed! But with this scenario, and if Bayless really becomes a star I will suicide myself……..

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jun 26, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

We needed a new Keith van Horn now that the real KvH is leaving us for good :(

by Stevie on Jun 26, 2008 10:22 PM EDT reply actions

Jason Kidd is laughing right now….

by shark on Jun 26, 2008 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

I hope at least we get Bill Walker at #40….because CDR wil be drafted to boston another help for the champs….I’m pissed of with this day, I hope Thorn and Kiki have some deals tonight or in next few days! aagggrhhh…I can’t understand this wtf!!!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jun 26, 2008 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

at least we didn’t pass on gordon … the clippers got themselves a future allstar … and a fun guy to watch as well

by newark hawk on Jun 26, 2008 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

with the money we save by dumping diop and curly, maybe we can get maggette or artest via a trade

by newark hawk on Jun 26, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

WTF CDR didn’t make the first round!?!? How’s that possible!? I wish we get him but, hw will not be available certainly!
But in this latest drafts we are getting something that we don’t expect maybe with some lucky…lol! 1st CDR ; 2nd Bill Walker ; 3rd Shan Foster ; are the targets for #40! I want one of this guys!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jun 26, 2008 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

I’m happy with our picks. NJ will be better than what you guys think. Don’t forget free agency too. We can maybe get James Posey or Mickael Pietrus.

by Danny on Jun 26, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

CDR at 40 guys dont worry

by jar on Jun 26, 2008 10:47 PM EDT reply actions

lol wow jordan is sliding…but lets pray for CDR at 40

by Leon on Jun 26, 2008 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

I like the pick. A 41% 3point shooter and 85% freethrow. Two stats that were major problems on this team. if he could rebound that would be a bonus.

by GTO on Jun 26, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

ok we got CDR!

by LeoN on Jun 26, 2008 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

Oh my goodness we are one pick way of getting CDR, please god make it happen! lol

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jun 26, 2008 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yes yes yes, but i don’t get it, how the hell he falls to #40??

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jun 26, 2008 11:09 PM EDT reply actions

Mna what a Draft!!! Damn we had a great draft! Thorn and Kiki did they best with what they had and I applaud those guys! We arent finished yet. We have lots of work to do and If we keep making these choices than we will be mroe than okay!! GOOD NIGHT FELLAS!!

by IsawVC on Jun 26, 2008 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

The Nets have so many PF and C now they could field 2 teams: a Varsity and JV squad

Varsity:
C Krstic
C Boone
PF Yi
PF Nachbar

JV:
C Lopez
PF Anderson
PF Williams

To Thorn and Kiki:

I’d rather be lucky than good. It was a lucky night.

Well done!

by John down the shore on Jun 26, 2008 11:25 PM EDT reply actions

I can’t believe all the negativity. The Nets have had one of the best drafts of any team in the league.

The Nets have had to have lots of things go right in order to score 100 pts in a game. Both Vince and RJ needed to have good games, which didn’t always happen, then either Curly or Boone needs to get at least 10 pts, which we couldn’t count on, and then off the bench we need either Boki or Marcus to score 10 or more pts, which was also iffy.

After that they didn’t have anyone else they could count on for points. What they need is more guys off the bench who might be able to give you double digit scoring. Both Anderson and CDR give them that. Both Yi and Simmons give them that as well.

Lopez and CDR both bring defensive intensity.

Now they need to sign Antawn Jamison as a free agent to play the 3 in place of Jefferson. Give him the Big Apple spotlight he’s deserved, and reunite him with cousin/brother-in-law VC.

Starters

Devin Harris – point
VC – 2
Antawn Jamison – 3
Boone – 4
Krstic – 5

Bench has CDR and Marcus at the guards, Boki, Anderson, Simmons at Small Forward, and Swift, SWill, and Lopez at the bigs.

Diop probably signs with Dallas. Hassel and Ager, as well as Marcus, could still be moved.

Jamison will be a 20 pt scorer, easily replacing RJ’s offense, while adding better rebounding and defense. Hopefully Krstic contines to improve as he gets healthier, and Boone makes further progress in year 3. CDR, Anderson and Lopez will put pressure on Boone, Boki, Williams, and Williams to either perform or give up playing time.

Back in the playoffs!

by Net Nut on Jun 26, 2008 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

This picks means at least that Diop is going out….. and well seeing the things we have a nice roster to make some good trades, but for now we have this lineups:

PG: Harris, M.Williams
SG: Carter, CDR, Ager
SF: Simmons, Anderson, Nachbar, Hassel
PF: Krstic, S.Williams, Swift,
 C: Lopez, Boone, Diop

Now, if we can get backup PG to Harris and more 1 or 2 shooters with maybe sign and trade of Diop, Krstic and Nachbar or better trading Hasssel!
I just want more trades, if Thorn said that we are not rebuilding, was not what he showed trading Jefferson for Yi! I believe he has something more to do!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jun 26, 2008 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

Pedro, why did you leave Yi off your roster?

by John down the shore on Jun 26, 2008 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

lol, I forgot him, there so many players in our roster right now =S
We have 16 guys and we can do some good business with half of them! I´m looking forward to the next rumor days!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jun 26, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

This is a great pick! The last thing the Nets need is another athletic big with upside that can’t hit a free throw or remember a play. This is something the Nets have not had since Keith Van Horn.. And if you remember he did help us with crucial threes in the playoffs. This gives us dimension, something we haven’t had in a while.

by supernetsfan on Jun 26, 2008 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

Dallas picked Shan Foster, maybe we can get him in a sign and trade for Diop to Dallas!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Jun 26, 2008 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

Everyone is so confused or critical about us picking Anderson. We needed 2 main things going into tonight’s draft:

-a big man that can score and play defense
-a pure scorer

We got BOTH of those tonight. Lopez is a big man that averaged over 20 ppg and plays defense very well.

Anderson was the Pac-10 leading scorer with 21.1 ppg and 1st team all Pac-10…he was a finalist for the wooden award for god sake! If u don’t call a player that led the Pac-10 in scoring w/ 21.1 ppg a pure scorer, than idk what u call it.

CDR was sucha gift for us. He should have NEVER dropped that low. He is going to bring so much energy to this team.

I am EXTREMELY excited to go to the IZOD Center this year and see these 3 shine!

HELL OF A DRAFT VANDERTHORNE!!!!

by DHarris = Future on Jun 27, 2008 12:42 AM EDT reply actions

People would probably like this pick better if his name was Ryan Andersonovic or something. People just seem to think that that since he’s a white dude from the US that he’ll be a bust but he seems like he can do everything that a good Euro prospect can do.

by Bear on Jun 27, 2008 12:56 AM EDT reply actions

Not really too hot on this pick. Would’ve rather they took Serge Ibaka or Darrell Arthur or DJ White or Joey Dorsey or Bill Walker

by Muwu on Jun 27, 2008 6:41 AM EDT reply actions

That would have been sucha stupid move to take Ibaka. He’s not NBA-ready yet so he’s going to stay in Spain and play for another 2-3 years (thats what they always say, then they never come back and its a waste of a draft pick)

Anderson had more ppg than OJ Mayo, Kevin Love, and Jerryd Bayless (all in the Pac-10)
