PreDraft Camp Kicks Off Wednesday

Rod Thorn, Kiki Vandeweghe and Lawrence Frank are headed to Orlando for the unveiling of the 2008 NBA Draft class. Sixty-five players have been invited, with another 15 showing up for physicals only. That's 80 players for 60 picks...and international players are mostly still playing overseas. Among the 15 sitting out is Texas A&M's DeAndre Jordan, projected as the Nets' pick on many mock drafts. Meanwhile, UNC shooting guard Wayne Ellington says he'll work out for New Jersey.

Doesn’t surprise me Jordan is sitting out. He started only 21 of the Aggies 35 games, averaged only 20.1 minutes per game, did shoot .617 from the floor but only .437 from the line (did get 6 free throws per game though) scored 8 points per game, had 6 boards & 2 blocks, 3 fouls and 3 turnovers per game. I think the guy is not ready for the NBA and would be better off staying in school and getting some serious PT. I hope someone else picks him.

Good info. Also he sat on the bench for Team USA in the U19 World Chanpionships, averaging 4 and 3, last summer.
Great potential…maybe.

My favored picks for 10 are Love or Randolph . I think these two guys would fit nicely.

@DH34
Why CDR? What hole does he fill?
I agree with everyone on Jordan – avoid like the plague (check out my podcast www.njnetscast.com). Love can play for any team, he’s got that intangible. Rumor has it Spreights might go back to school.
No shocker that none of the good ones are even playing.

no way are we picking a project big man … been there, done that … collins, krstic, ilic, boone, sean … that drill is getting real old, especially after watching guys like rondo, stuckey and maxiel make fast, bigtime contributions for the celtics and pistons
i fully expect thorn/kiki to either trade the picks in a blockbuster, trade up in the draft to grab eric gordon or use both picks to grab skilled swingmen, such as cdr, rush or budinger
ignore all the mock draft predictons … 99 times out of a hundred they’re wrong … in fact, some of the mock drafts are so off base, they’re downright comical

was tim donaghy doing the lakers-spurs game last night … it sure looked like it on that last play … if that wasn’t a foul, then nothing is … david stern must really want the lakers back in the finals … pro wrestling is starting to look legitimate compared to the nba

I don’t want Jordan here. He’s not ready for the NBA.
I like Love and Randolph at #10, but I’m not sure they will be available by then… If they are not, then we should trade that pick…
I like Douglas-Roberts, Rush and Lee at #21 to fill the swingman back-up spot. If we trade the #10 pick for a talented shooter (such as Mike Miller), we should select a big man at #21 (I think Jason Thompson could be interesting).

@ mjs
CDR will bring 6 – 10 points off the bench which the Nets need. We need a scorer off the bench.
by DH34 on May 28, 2008 7:55 AM EDT reply actions
Jordan!?! No way. Why would we possibly pick him? We already have our project big men who can’t figure out the game.
by PA Net on May 28, 2008 8:04 AM EDT reply actions
I’d take CDR over Rush or Lee, but I wouldn’t mind if we select Brandon or Courtney.
by Andrés on May 28, 2008 8:08 AM EDT reply actions
@newark hawk
Collins, Krstic and Boone all made substantial contributions to the Nets and were seen as smart picks by their second year if not first…in the case of Collins and Krstic. No more than six percent of players taken in the 20’s make significant contributions to their teams, meaning they are consistent rotation players. All three of those guys were taken after #18.
Nets had no chance at Rondo, who was taken #21 or Stuckey who was taken at #15. Both were made before the Nets picked in 2006 and 2007. Maxiell was taken after Wright. It was a great pick by Dumars, but NO ONE even had him in the first round in their mocks.
Please do a little more research.

Here are the players I like:
#10
Kevin Love
Anthony Randolph
Donte Greene
JaVale McGee
#21
Chris Douglas-Roberts
Brandon Rush
Courtney Lee
Jason Thompson
#40
Shan Foster
Richard Hendrix
Lester Hudson
If we can’t get Love or Anthony at #10, we should trade the pick, alongisde the expiring contracts of Swift and Ager for Mike Miller, and then select Jason Thompson at #21, even if I prefer Hibbert, but I don’t think he will be still available by then…

CDR will drop unless he has great workouts. People will wonder if his success was the result of playing for a great point guard at Memphis.
Budinger and Robin Lopez stock has already dropped. They are not anywhere to be seen in Orlando. They hoped to be among those invited for physicals only but a poll of NBA GM’s didnt get them into that top 15. So they are left with only individual workouts.
The 15 players who are invited for physicals only are the ones who GM’s voted as the most likely lottery picks right now. That could change.
So the top 15 are: Beasley, Rose, Brook Lopez, Randolph, Green, Alexander, Bayless, Jordan, Arthur, Gordon, Love, Mayo, McGee, Westbrook. Gallinari would have made that list no doubt, but his team is still playing in Europe.

@ net income
krstic … drafted in ‘02 … SPENT 2 YEARS OVERSEAS DEVELOPING HIS GAME & BODY … is still a highly limited player … and the knee injury, by krstic’s own admission, is no longer a valid excuse for his poor play
collins … never developed beyond being one of the WORST OFFENSIVE PLAYERS IN THE LEAGUE, with weak rebounding and shotblocking skills as well … the only reason he got playing time is because the nets had few other options
boone … has no offensive game beyond the pick & roll … and his defense is nothing to brag about either … even his former college coach said he WASN’T NBA READY in ’06 and should have stayed another year at uconn to develop his offensive skills
stuckey & rondo were taken only one or 2 picks ahead of sean and marcus … TRADING UP a couple slots in the mid to lower first round is not very difficult to do … a 2nd round pick and a little cash will usually do the trick
the mock drafts are not reliable … for example, some mock drafts had sam bowie ahead of michael jordan in ‘84 … a pick that trailblazer fans still haven’t gotten over … smart general managers don’t rely on mock drafts for their selections, but do their own IN-DEPTH RESEARCH as well … that’s how joe dumars and the pistons wound up with a draft day steal like maxiell

Collins wasn’t that bad in his first years , at least Kendrick Perkins niveau . He just regressed so fast . Serviceable Center with limited offense .
Boone was a good pick at 22 , maybe not fully NBA ready but another year in college wouldn’t helped that much in my eyes .
Krstic before in injury wasn’t as limited as you say . A torn ACL takes ~18 months of recovery so he should be fine next year . The Nets rushed him back too early that set him back alot . He really wasn’t ready for playing at the beginning of the season .

@ HoldenCaulfield
For most teams Kevin Love would be a mistake but given the Nets’ rich history of drafting unathletic, one dimensional power forwards and centers his slow lumbering up and down the court would fit right in a Nets system. Plus, Frank would figure out who the least productive big men were(Collins and Allen?) and start them for many games.

whats so funny and sad about what you said is that its true..lol

yes. actually espn projected jordan’s similarity to dwight. i was about to comment… is he going to be more of dwight or more of collins or someone in between.
I guess for draft it is more to invest on talent, it doesn’t necessarily need to be (nice to be) nba ready type of player… i.e: if you have to wait 2 years for andrew bynum or danny granger then so be it.
I hope anthony or love is still available at #10.
commenting on dummars… i would like to point that he got a chance to draft carmelo. Drafting Darko as wallace’ backup and eventual successor… only trading him earlier than big ben. what a waste.
hope frank give minutes to whoever we draft this year.

What do you guys think about Rider’s Jason Thompson? I think he’s underrated ’cause he plays for a small college, but I thin he could be the steal of the draft. Book it.
by Andrés on May 28, 2008 1:28 PM EDT reply actions
As I said a couple of days ago, we should take Shan Foster at #40. He’s the best shooter in this draft. By far. He could be a big time steal in the 2nd round.
by Andrés on May 28, 2008 1:43 PM EDT reply actions
I agree with you Andrés, but with the top 15 doing only physicals, probably he will shine in orlando pre-draft camp, and can rise up some spots in draft! Let’s see, at #40 Foster will be great pick!
by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on May 28, 2008 2:45 PM EDT reply actions
Just like Hudson, Davon Jefferson or Bill Walker are also good options, i think!
by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on May 28, 2008 2:49 PM EDT reply actions
Re Jordan : Howard. I think Howard had an unusually rigorous upbringing and good values and work ethic. We’re not hearing any of that re Jordan. He reminds me more of Eddy Curry than Superman.
I agree with Andres re Shan Foster, although I would probably go with Brandon Rush earlier and moot the point.
by Mt57 on May 28, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions
Bill Walker, as Nets Income pointed out, is a nice sleeper. I like Budinger and Alexander for scoring, but neither will last to 21. I think better players than that list will be around at 21.

LMAO @ Johnny
Dude don’t forget about the franchise’s knack for drafting unskilled busts on the perimeter. Tamar Slay, Zoran P, and Antione Wright were all solid picks. I don’t know what Rod was smoking prior to passing over Danny Granger for the guy who led the league 2 years in a row over the amount of times he a)visably wet his pants on the court and b)stepped out of bounds, but it couldnt have been anything short of crack
by Mr. Dollar Bills on May 28, 2008 3:19 PM EDT reply actions
Tamar Slay, haha. Good ’ol #8. Those were the days.
I’ll say hi to him for the board next time I’m at WaWa.

A big man with no great skill will never develop into something great. The Nets will be better off looking at foreign big man with developed skills. And I think that’s not this year’s priority. The Nets needs scoring and back-ups for Jefferson and Carter or future starter. Rebounders are also needed. The Nets should pick from these:CDR, Joe Alexander, Brandon Rush, Marese Speights Nathan Kawai and Shan Forster.

@ dollar bill
toine repeatedly stepping out of bounds on corner spotups … lol … love the way that franky boy put an immediate stop to that … wonder how many times popovich or sloan would have allowed toine to do that before getting in his grill … maybe one and a half times, tops … and the same could be said with regard to sean’s silly fouls, carter’s fadeaway threes, kidd’s ridiculous turnovers or boki/curly passing up wide open shots … pop and sloan nip those things in the bud, whereas franky boy just takes out his beloved clipboard and draws up another play … no wonder we only won 34 games
by newark hawk on May 29, 2008 5:46 PM EDT reply actions
I would prefer a winger/shooter, but for that we have to trade the pick higher to get at least eric gordon, but if we stay with #10, I would pick Gallinari, or Randolph, because they have so so much potential!
