Blowout Ends Nets' Six Year Long Playoff Run

Whatever minimal hopes the Nets had for resurrecting their lost season died Friday night when the Raptors went from 14 down in the second period to 28 up at game's end. The loss eliminated the Nets from the playoff for the first time since the 2000-01 season. Although the Hawks beat the Knicks as well, Indiana won, giving them at least a mathmatical chance to catch up. It wasn't just the Nets' defense that failed them Friday. It was their whole game. The Raptors out-shot, out-rebounded and out-passed the Nets. Over the middle two periods, Toronto scored 65 points to the Nets' 37. Vince Carter scored 21 on 9 for 15 shooting and Devin Harris scored 19 on 7 for 16. He also added six rebounds and five assists. Eight players scored in double figures for the Raptors, led by sixth man Carlos Delfino who had 24 and Chris Bosh who finished with 21.

For those of us who pay real money to watch and cheer on this product, they wont get another freakin cent from me until they convince me over the summer that they want to win a championship NOW!!! It is apparent that management feels as long as we put a decent product on the floor (they will come). Well the decent product principle has failed. Also why should the good people of Jersey who do attend these games just go through the motions until they go to Brooklyn. Done, Done, Done. This group is a bunch of loders!!!

Carter sucks, its time to say it. Soft, the most non-effective 25 points a game I have ever seen, Jefferson is selfish and not really a team leader (aside from the other issues and preferences he may have), Kristic a great kid, love him but he cant defend low at all, Marcus William does not belong in the NBA, poor ball management and cant guard a barn, Sean William some athleticism but hes so immature 12 going on 11, Josh Boone could be but just as easily might not be maybe one more year. Lets. This team layed down on us and the leader of the sell out was carter. He knows what is effective and wins games and what doesnt. I finally understand why the people of canada boo him. Before its over i have a feeling so will we.
by Ed B on Apr 12, 2008 5:07 AM EDT reply actions
Ed I will never boo Carter. You can’t blame him.
by jerrod on Apr 12, 2008 8:37 AM EDT reply actions
@ed you are absolutely wrong…
You can blame Lfrank,Kidd,RJ,Marcus,Hassel,sometimes SWill
But the guys who gave it all were VC and Harris…
VC is the only bright and good thing about this team…
+More than half of the season he played with bad ankle…..
The solution RJ+Marcus+Krstic or Swift + First round picks for Elton Brand or a good shooter or both…and this team is a contender next year…

I agree, other than VC and Devin. The rest of the team sucks. Marcus Williams is beyond horrible. RJ is such a girl.

A team with this talent should NOT be out of the playoffs. See Houston.
Frank has been the wrong coach for this team from the beginning. Each year worse than the next.

I keep turning people against Carter. LOL
Yea it’s time to critisize again. Carter has been the only brightspot. That’s true, but it also shows that he can’t be a leader. Sure his numbers have been AWESOME since Kidd left, but has he made THE TEAM better? Kidd scores half of what Carter scores and gets A BIT more rebounds and assists, but he made them better. He actually helped win games.
25/6/5 is an impressive stat line, which only two other players can do, Kobe and LeBron, but if you can’t produce wins for your team, then it’s a waste.

Frank need to go, Thorn please hire Terry Porter or Mark Jackson as the Coach. The Team needs thoughness, look for Ron Artest, trade for Nene as our center, Charlie Villinuava, and Mike Miller our bench will be solid.
Draft wisely, this team will make some noise next year.

What talent elone we basically have 2-3 players right now able to score 20 points on a consistent basis . The rest of the team stinks on offense or is extremely inconsistent and to make matters worse our players aren’t great defenders either.
by Stevie on Apr 12, 2008 11:22 AM EDT reply actions
@ Kevin
Carter is trying to lead his team to wins, but he needs some back-up. By your logic, the Timberwolves lost all those years with Garnett because Garnett wasn’t a team leader. Of course you will say that Carter isn’t Garnett, but then you will be missing my point. Carter has been great since the trade and he is trying to lead. A player like Jason Kidd, who makes his teammates better (unless he makes them worse, like this year, when he was unhappy) doesn’t come along every day. Carter’s assist numbers are better than those of anyone else on the team (I think), and he can score. BTW, saying that Kidd scores half of what Carter scores is very generous – I’d like to see the stats on that (full disclosure: I have been angry at Jason Kidd since the night of the alleged migraine). Obviously the team needs a lot of work, but getting rid of Carter is not the answer. Don’t expect management to agree with you.

@ Kevin,
Clean up the mess that JK left behind takes more than Carter playing well.

@ Kevin,
Dallas record with harris was 30-13 and with Kidd is 15-11.
Does it mean Harris is a better player/leader than Kidd and Harris makes every body better?
by at on Apr 12, 2008 12:28 PM EDT reply actions
Carter is not the problem here, but part of the solution. The guy has become a play maker and still poses a threat offensively when healthy, he’s shown that he doesn’t need to jump over everyone to score 20+, and still get people involved. That’s why I like his pairing with Harris, who also can put up points and make things difficult for the defense. If Devin Harris averages 7-8 a game next season next to Carter who will get anywhere between 5 and 6, i’ll be pleased. There’s some dead weight on this team that needs to be moved for a big.

Kidd is 15-11 will Dallas, 6 of those losses came in the last minutes of the game, so they could’ve gone 21-5. Harris is about 8-17 with the Nets, don’t know the exact number.
So I don’t think Harris is a better playmaker. He will be a great player in the next couple of years, but he won’t be as good as Kidd. The only point guard that can be compared to Kidd is Chris Paul.
by Kevin on Apr 12, 2008 1:12 PM EDT reply actions
Jason Kidd ruined this season. Nothing really changed in the lineup, when the Nets were losing games Kidd just got angry and left, I don’t understand, this team is really good, better than the Hawks, more talent than the 76ers, but (32-47) happened. I know next season will be better. Vince Carter is going to lead this nets team, keep him if you want the Nets to make the playoffs next year. I’ll c u all in 08-09 season.
Go Nets!
by Nets15 on Apr 12, 2008 1:27 PM EDT reply actions
@Kevin,
You can use all justification and excuses in the word to picture the Kidd as a great player and leader.
A player with 20m salary and shooting 38% with nobody covering him and with so many open looks is far away from being great. Add to this his inability to defend fast point guards.
Although he is good at transition offence, but is a liability in half court offence. The tight games are only played half court especially in the crunch time.
Comparing him CP3 is just ridiculous.

again, like the cleveland game, this game signified the whole nets season in a nutshell.
as you can see this team is goiood enough and talented to stay with teams till halfway or more. but when the tough gets tough, and the coach needs to be involved wiith subs pattern and game adjusments they start to stink and falter.
every NBA team takes on the personality of its coach. this team is soft, fragile, and has no personality. they have no identity, and dont know what style they want to play. these are all matters pertaining to coaching.
tas you can see byroin scott, he has the hornets embrace that same personality the nets finals team has had. its so obvious. ever since frank took over, the bar has been set lower and lower every year. he took a finals team and made it a lottary team. the proof is in the pudding.
but he should be fired for one reason and one reason only for the game against the raptors. this game is meaningless when it comes to this season. the only thing that can be taken for advantage in these final games including this one is to know what type of talent your youngsters have, and give them PT and experience. frank had every player play except sean williams. what is he doing to this kid. this is a traversty. what is he trying to teach him. this isnt primary school, this is the NBA. frank needs to teach him how to play, and nothing else. there’s no point to have wasted talent on the bench. what is he trying to do? have management trade him. one for one, sonce you traded collins kiki, ill make you trade sean. i cant belive that sean didnt get a minute, especially when its his time to shine.
frank has regressed every youngster on the team. and makes people like some of you who have no clue about basketball think these youngsters suck. these youngsters are the future of the nets. frank doesnt have the good of the franchise for the future, all he’s thinking is about his job status, and henceforth his lack of trust in young talent. instead he has hassel and boki playing the big man position instead of sean. i mean since boone has been injured i thought for sure would get a serious run, since then he hasnt sniffed a minute, and he’s the one who;’s supposed to be playing.
what puts matter worse we dont have one competent journalist here that has asked that simple question, why isnt sean playing while he’s suppose to.

I guess you don’t understand, or don’t know, what defines Kidd as a great player. It’s not his shooting. You don’t have to shoot well to be a great player. Using that reasoning is just ridiculous. If you use shooting to justify a player to be great, then the likes of Mike Miler, Kyle Korver, Jose Navarro, and the other sharp-shooters are the best players in the league.
His inability to to guard fast guards, I guess you didn’t watch the last time two times Kidd played Parker. The first game, he didn’t guard him that much, but when Kidd was on him, Parker never even smelled the paint. The second time was even better, he held Parker to 4-21 shooting.
How is he a liability on the half court set? Have you ever heard of the post game? Kidd is bigger and stronger than most guards in the West. Posting him up has given other Mavs open shots.
And about crunch time, I guess you haven’t watched their 3-1 record against winning teams recently. They’ve won them during crunch time, when Kidd was on the floor.
Kidd has meshed with his team at a perfect time, a week from the playoffs. They’ve learned how to finish games with Kidd now.

mina, you’ve been making some interesting points about Sean lately….how about this, the only extensive minutes i can remember Sean getting lately is when Frank put him in against the Suns to guard Shaq…and this is the guy Frank is quoted as having said is too small to guard a 4…what is going on? is Sean being punished for something that we don’t know about?
by Spartan on Apr 12, 2008 4:33 PM EDT reply actions
Seems to me before you take a team apart – you change coaches and see what happens.
Make some adjustments i.e trade RJ and some pieces if you can put together a deal, see what is available in the draft, sign Krstic, Diop, and Nachbar if you can, but that’s it.
Get a coach that can develop young talent and is a butt kicker. Get Bobby Knight.
by halwas on Apr 12, 2008 7:39 PM EDT reply actions
I really don’t know what is your problem with Frank and not developing young players ? The ones we have actually gotten a lot better. Even Antoine Wright made strides this season , he just wasn’t as good as the Nets thought when we was drafted .
You can say a lot about about Frank but not that he’s not helping to develop the young guys.
by Stevie on Apr 12, 2008 8:10 PM EDT reply actions
lets try to sum things up here.1st,frank can’t coach to save his life.the man is a career asst. yet hes the nets head coach LOL.I watched this man play small(Losing)ball to"match up players".the guy can’t teach the game of basketball and does’nt get respect from anyone.i seen him arguing a call with a ref but wouldnt look him in the eye for that intemmadation factor.i cant see this guy yelling at the players for anything they do wrong.
For you V.C haters,Vince is not a leader but the guy is the best pure scorer in this league.if he start back on working on his game, hell be the best.his problem is,he plays the game for fun & hates it to be work.little girl, yes.you guys have to know that R.J cried about not being an allstar beacuse of Vince trading him for brand would be great.

@ mina
don’t be surprised if sean is traded because frank can’t deal with him … i have a strong suspicion that is why eddie house, hassan adams and mikki moore weren’t resigned last summer
any players who are even the slightest bit chatty or difficult, thorn has to move because frank can’t handle them … i know jefferson is chatty, but he’s got nothing to complain about with his big minutes and big contract … role players like sean, moore, adams and house require strong interpersonal skills on the part of the head coach, skills that frank obviously doesn’t have
just wanted to give you a heads up

Sean isn’t playing anymore because the management wants to take a better look at Diop Swift and Krstic .
There’s no reason to play the guys you want to keep anyway ( i’m pretty sure Boone could play if needed ) when you still have to make decisions about the other bigs .
