Desperation Time

With Atlanta's win over the Knicks on Sunday, the Nets remain three games in the loss column out of the eighth spot in the East. And Atlanta still has another game against the Knicks, as well as matchups with Memphis (Monday) and Miami, left on their schedule. Their magic number (Atlanta wins plus New Jersey losses) to eliminate the Nets is seven.

Vince carter is the only one who is showing up…………..he was just huge the last 12 games whatever he does, this team is screwing it up
whether it is marcus with his ill advised shots and turnovers, boki going a combined 2-14 in two crucial must win games or harris with his shoot first mentality……….
this team just doenst play up to its potential and the reason is FRANK…………imagine if we would have invovled VC in the offense like we do now we were a lock for the playoffs. however he didnt and immo he basically cost us the season
cheers

Right Dadi, Frank went 2 of 14, Frank tried passing into 4 Pacers to commit a turnover, Frank went 1 for 10 (Marcus). As I recall wasn’t everyone bitching about the VC isos? Now he’s the hero, wrong, teams win games, not individual players, not individual coaches. Bottom line is many of our players are just not good enough to compete with real NBA teams. Players like Boki, Toine when he was here, Boone, S. Williams, Darrell Armstrong, would not get a minute on teams like Phoenix or San Antonio. Compare Phoenix’ starting 8 rotation with the Nets and it’s not hard to figure out why we suck- poor draft choices, no inside post presence, poor outside shooting, poor defense, all the ‘intangibles’ that make for a terrible team.

kudos to VC, hopefully he’s a Net next season when we have ourselves together.

@ Johnny.
Please don’t compere the Nets to San Antonio or Phoenix. How about Atlanta and Philadelphia.

There is officially only one reason left to watch the Nets the rest of this season… and her name is Michelle Beadle…
This season was a complete disaster… and it will get no better until the team decides to hire an actual NBA coach…

Missing the playoffs will hopefully be the wake up call these guys need. They’ll realize they can’t just “turn it on” when they feel like it and maybe they’ll start off strong for once.

I actually hope we miss out.. It’ll be better for the all of us if that happens then let Thorn work (behind the scene) on hopefully trying to find us a real coach…
by John on Mar 31, 2008 10:55 AM EDT reply actions
Best case scenario for The Nets is to miss the playoffs and the Mavs to get in as the 8 seed out west. Then the Nets would have 2 of the top 19 picks in this years draft. There’s a lot of talent coming out. Half the teams in the final 4 could lose their top 2 or 3 players. They should put a package together for a stud player.
Complaining about Frank is falling on deaf ears. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter anyway. Talent wins. Ask Pat Riley. What’s the difference in Riley’s coaching ability? Magic Johnson? Pat Ewing? a healthy and motivated Shaq and D Wade? If you have talent you win. Mike Brown’s no genious… He has Lebron. Phil Jackson won’t coach unless he has one of the top players in the league.
VC, RJ and Devin Harris would all shine if they had a REAL superstar on the team. That’s what Kidd was when he came from the Suns. The Nets have a lot of options and pieces to move. I’d try to package a deal to get into the top 3 of the draft.

@johnny
well but is a fact that the new offense of frank which lead to fewer touches for VC hurt us the most
I cant event tell you how many games we lost because of that………since VC is here he carried this franchise- basically it was a one man show on the offensive end and it worked
I mean we werent one of the best 4 teams in the league but we were very very competitive and the main reason was VC + kidd. however, this season Frank decided to go away from VC to a more “balanced” offense and we all see what happened
I know Frank is not the only reason why we are in such a bad position but his decision making cost us a lot of games, period.

@ johnny & nodar rode
how about comparing the nets to the wizards, warriors, hawks and sixers … where’s the “post presence” on those teams?! … unless you consider jamison, harrington, smith and iguodala post presences … but then you’d have to consider carter a post presence as well … yet all those teams will make the playoffs, while the nets won’t even get to 35 wins
and johnny, if it’s only about the players, while the coaches are just innocent bystanders, then why do coaches get paid so much?! … frank gets paid $4 million per year, more than 3 of the nets’ starters … does frank get paid that amount simply for his great interviews and press conferences?! … lol
by newark hawk on Mar 31, 2008 11:20 AM EDT reply actions
@ supreme
nobody ever said that it’s ALL about the coach … that would be a ridiculous statement to make … but it’s just as ridiculous to say that it’s ALL about the players … both players AND coaches matter … that’s why they award coach of the year honors, that’s why coaches make the big bucks
as much as i’d like to replace frank with a REAL head coach, i’m fully aware that it wouldn’t be enough to bring the nets a championship … but a REAL head coach would be enough to bring an extra 10 wins in the regular season, as well as an extra round or two in the playoffs
rick adelman’s impact on the rockets and don nelson’s impact on the warriors are living proof that coaching does
matter … if lawrence frank was coaching either one of those teams, they wouldn’t even break .500 … i know it, you know it, the whole world knows it

Yes more losses for us and Dallas hopefully don’t make the playoff too. Tomorrow is another day.
Hope they get a good Power forward and athletic shooting guard
Now the only thing would Frank get involve on the draft, I hope not, give it all to KiKi V.
by JuliusIrving on Mar 31, 2008 12:13 PM EDT reply actions
julius,
Dallas not making the playoffs is a bad thing for us because they keep their pick and we need ourselves to not make the ’offs and Dallas to get in so we have two 1st rounders

Just take a look at this VC’S stats breakdown:
Before the trade with the Mavs: 20.5 ppg on 16.6 FGApg (44.5% FG).
Since Kidd left: 23.2 ppg on 18.4 FGApg (45.6% FG); + 7.3 rpg & 4.8 apg.
Last 7 games: 30.3 ppg on 21.6 FGApg (48.3% FG); + 8.6 rpg & 5.3 apg.
That shows you that when VC gets the touches that a guy of his talent deserves, then he produces and does what he’s expected to do.
If our offense had went through VC all season and if he had got enough touches before, we would be in a different situation right now.

@newark hawk
Soooo …the fact that the Nets made the playoffs 6 consecutive times 4 with frank)means Frank is a good coach or a bad coach? What I’m saying is that he is an average coach who would be a very good coach with good talent or a great coach if he had Magic, Kareem and Worthy. I’ve never heard anyone call Nelson(who was run out of NY) or Adelman (who I don’t remember him winning any titles either), great coaches. I thought we should have kept Byron Scott. But we made the playoff the next 4 seasons. Soooo like I said… What was the difference? The talent. You do know the Boston fans wanted Doc Rivers out last year after a 24-58 record?.. hmmm wonder why they think he’s so smart this year. Guys named Garnett and Allen come to mind.
The bottom line is who cares about just making the playoffs if you don’t have a chance to win the title. yea Frank pissed me off with a lot of things that he’s done. But the players piss me off waaaay more. They are in position to win a lot of games and don’t make it happen.
re: if lawrence frank was coaching either one of those teams, they wouldn’t even break .500 … i know it, you know it, the whole world knows it
By the way…this would be Franks First time NOT being 500.
by supreme on Mar 31, 2008 1:50 PM EDT reply actions
Correct Andres.
Unless there is a big man out there that can put the points up in the paint that we need, Carter should not be traded. He is playing awesome basketball and he’s becoming a smarter player despite not being as explosive as before. Carter-Harris is a solid backcourt.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Mar 31, 2008 2:00 PM EDT reply actions
VC should get most of the touches, because he is the legit scorer in this league. RJ should be no more the secondary scorer.
Just miss the playoffs, and we should pick another good young player, just see how could we draft Antoine Wright instead of Danny Granger. Just let Boki go, he just sucks, we need to draft a quality big man or swingmen shooters, we don’t need blue collar kind of big men, who only play defense and rebound, but can not create shot for himself.
by jarkid on Mar 31, 2008 2:04 PM EDT reply actions
Anyway,
I consider this season done as I don’t see our Nets winning enough games versus playoff teams whereas the Hawks have an easy schedule…
We all hope VC is going to stay, but thing is that my man is upping his trade value right now…Not sure if Thorn wouldn’t pull the trigger on a potential deal…
I hope you guys didn’t forget that we are rebuilding,
Or we could do it ala Sixers (Miller)…
Let’s see

@newark hawk
Coaches like Don Nelson are nice for getting into the playoffs which seems like something we won’t see this year…But coaches like Nelson don’t go anywhere in the playoffs because they can’t defend a lick.
When it comes down to it i’m willing to give Frank a pass on this year considering all thats gone on with our former point guard who was blatentely saying his teammates weren’t good enough. With Jkidd we were losing to the knicks, memphis, clippers….all games that now how come back to bite us in our * this year.
As a nets fan, If were not going to make it this year then i’m going to look forward to our lottery chances and our possible roster next year with DH as our point guard. I think there is a lot of optimism that we should have with the future of this team with or without question marks.
More incentives to feel better? Possibly, My mets have Johan Santana, and my Nets are not the New York Knicks. Glass half full

What’s even the point in making the play-offs?
How can a quick humiliating Celtics sweep be better than a 1st-11th pick?
Honestly now the season was ruined by 2 individuals (the first is an incompitent coach /brilliant polititian and the second is an aging PG that’s lost his passion) and there’s no point in ruining the next one along with it for a “respectable” playoff spot.
However if we make the lottery we can luck out with a top 3 pick or get a solid one in the worst case scenario that can help this team sooo much(this is one of the best drafts in years).
The team desperately needs to rebuild the bench (the starting 5 is right up there with the elite teams) and Im confident that Thornsky can pull something off like he always does.
The only thing that worries me about missing the play-offs is Carters reaction this is now HIS team we HAVE to keep him and I hope he’s willing to take 1 early vacation for a much better future.
by Adam.y on Mar 31, 2008 3:19 PM EDT reply actions
I don’t think VC is without fault. He is habitually slacking in the early part of the season just to go off in the second part. Having said that, his ankle injury and so called moving offense limited his production. As built right now, Nets cannot win a game without VC. Either we get Tim Duncan or we’ve to keep VC.
If you look at the league, every team with super star play through him. We should play through VC because RJ and the rest will find their shots because VC is not selfish like some other big scorers in the league.
by Tony on Mar 31, 2008 3:41 PM EDT reply actions
if we dont make the playoffs this will be a good thing. because next year we wont play as bad at the begining of the season because we always think in our head that the end of the year we will go on some stretch that we win a lot of games . i think vince will play great next year if we dont make the playoffs….i hope right now that we beat the 76ers and then the 76ers face atlanta in a home and home and hopefully the 6ers win we just have to win games and hopefully we get lucky i dont think the seasons over just yet
by Ben S on Mar 31, 2008 4:09 PM EDT reply actions
To add on to that, with Carter being the focal point on “O” he commands the attention of more than 1 player, which leads to open shots for RJ and the others.
I like our starting 5 of Krstic, Boone, Jefferson, Carter, Harris w/Sean, Diop, and Fat Boy Marcus, we just need some more umph off of the bench as far as shooting and scoring goes.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Mar 31, 2008 4:11 PM EDT reply actions
The lineup sounds good on paper – so why can’t they beat the good teams?
I’ll tell you why – they’re soft. They’re not fighters, they’re quitters. RJ scores points but not in the clutch, is a poor defender and a terrible passer. Krstic can shoot but gets muscled all over the place on defense. Harris is fast but misses shots all over the place. M. Williams is a good shooter and a poor defender. S. Williams is a great shot blocker but has no inside game. Boone tries, but has limited offensive skills.
The only bankable player they have is Carter – and he’s soft too.
They need an attitude adjustment.

Trade for Artest :)

Trade Carter for who? Everyone talks about this all star caliber big man, I wanna know who this all star big man is
by Hector on Mar 31, 2008 5:08 PM EDT reply actions
VC knows that he will be traded (soon or later). He is a veteran and rebuilding team is not what he wants, he wants to be in a good team. No wonder he plays hes tale off. He hardly ever played that good, maybe first year, after trade with Toronto. One of the reasons Kidd left is because VC didn’t played hard enough. VC is a brilliant player, but reputation he developed in Canada is real. I love him when he’s on and hate him when he is “taking easy” (except when he is injured). Thornsky got him because he was there to take and they could get him (Bravo).
Thornsky should replays K. Martin adequately. That’s what Nets been missing, instead they got VC. All this years team played with out legit power forward. That was a beginning of the end. Gradually Nets collapsed. Now you can spread the blame anyway you want, it’s to late. Three point specialist never been replaced easier. Everybody is happy with the resent trade, but what we got? One point guard for another, one center for another, some role players for another role players. Were is the legit big power forward? This trade is good because you got pretty good deal in desperate situation, when your Captain is pissed and wants out. Stop blaming J.Kidd, L. Frank, Boki, etc.., it’s irrelevant.
I wonder how other teams are build to last.
by Nodar Rode on Mar 31, 2008 5:21 PM EDT reply actions
If Artest could keep his head screwed on straight, I’d trade Jefferson for him in a heartbeat. I’d even throw in Swift, Hassel, maybe Armstrong. He would bring some needed toughness.
I would not trade Carter. Without him, you’ve got nothing. Team can live with Krstic in there, but Boone may not be a legit starter. I would develop Diop. Boone, both Williams, and Nachbar off the bench along with whoever you can pick up in the draft.
I must admit that I am losing confidence in Frank. I just don’t think he’s tough enough or demanding enough to win the big games.
