Nets Come Up Empty in Houston

With the Nets coming in to Monday's game with a five-game losing streak and struggling offensively, and the Rockets coming in with an 18-game winning streak and playing terrific defense, this one had the potential to be very ugly. And that's just what it was. The Nets shot a putrid 9-for-43 in the first half, scoring a season-low 28 points, and trailed by 18 at the break. They made a small run in the third, but never got to within less than 14, and garbage time came early. For the game, the Nets shot 30 percent from the field and were 0-for-6 from downtown. Houston's 19 straight wins ties the third best streak of all time.

its unfair to judge this team when we are facing the toughest teams in the leauge except memphis. if we cant win games at home we aint making the playoffs. also boone i dont think should start anymore he isnt playing well i think diop should start

A bunch of lost souls looking for Nirvana. What a horrible game. The bucket seemed to be as small as a golf ball. There is no penetration and there is no heart. I am at a loss for words.

Too late for a run, and what for!?

Im still here. They say good things come to those who wait. Well I guess I’m done with all the analyzing games. Like KG, Kobe, and PP Carter and RJ just have to wait it out. That’s all we got left. Possibly a lotto, Nenad and Boki could give us JO or Brand if not well we can get a good guard and Tyler Hans. out of the draft, and go from there. You hear that VC, and RJ just wait.

by Jerrod on Mar 10, 2008 11:33 PM EDT reply actions

I still think the Nets can make the playoffs. L Frank is still a great coach that can pull this team through this. We just need Nenad to start producing a lot and then Vince will become the premier scorer that we all know he is. I think we’ll go on a big run to end the season and sqeak into the playoffs. Can’t wait till some postseason action!!!

by We can still make a deep playoff run!!!!!! (website) on Mar 10, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

At this point I’d like for the team to play competitive and with some heart but still end on the losing end so we can get some more ping pong balls and pray for some luck. This season is a lost cause already and we need to think about the team in the long term. If the team continues to play this bad maybe there will a greater chance Frank is fired and we bring in someone who wont block the development of our younger guys. Realistically i see the nets going around 5-14 in the remaining games the way this team is playing now which is fine with me. With teams just below us playing a little better then us we have a realistic shot at a pick between 7-9 and a better shot at getting a top 3 pick in the lottery.

by Meh on Mar 10, 2008 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

We can’t get lower then the 6th worst record , Miame , Memphis , Seattle , Minny and the Knicks won’t get our 26 wins we already have.

Damn we’ve been to good this season a good lottery pick …

Why did RJ and Carter play 35 and 32 minutes? This is a great time to give the youngs guys some minutes.

Too bad Nets “braintrust” extended L. Frank’s contract instead of hiring Adelman.

by TJ on Mar 11, 2008 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

i totally disagree with what BEN said. its just ridiculous that nets constantly come up empty on these road trips. can’t they at least pull out ONE??? you’d think with the talent this team has they could at least compete night in and out but that ain’t even the case. they are seemingly blown out every game. oh by the way, nets are combined 0-7 against memphis, clippers, and knicks. so much for facing the toughest teams in the league BEN.

get frank’s sorry * out of here. the guy just isn’t a good motivator and more significantly not a good coach. he should also cease to call timeouts because the team plays worse when he does.

Devin Harris isn’t that good, is he?

by Hank Essay on Mar 11, 2008 1:55 AM EDT reply actions

1 ast isn’t good enough for our point guard of the future. Maybe for our shooting guard of the future but not from our point guard. Our assist totals in the last two games have been pretty pathetic, 12 and 12?

by Muwu on Mar 11, 2008 1:57 AM EDT reply actions

Did you see the chicken running? decapitated and bleeding ( just for a little while of course).
That’s what Nets are, they are running without head. Dallas got the old, pre-owned head ( from the Nets ) and they are getting better and better. Where is the replacement head for the Nets?
Look at the stats, nobody is scoring. Why? because nobody is getting assists. Now you can see all the players under the microscope. Absence of J.Kidd exposed everybody, now you can see who is who. People not bashing J.Kidd much anymore and I know why.

Losing stops here..
Nets will make to the post season..
THey need to win the next 2 home games, just to get back mentaly.but its gonna be hard especialy against Utah. Then they will have a chance to make winning streak. They have so much talent to be in this position.
Maybe is the coach, maybe is VC,maybe are the others but they just keep playing..Winning cure everything..
GO NETS !!

by Zarko on Mar 11, 2008 5:39 AM EDT reply actions

Cleveland and Utah at home. Hmmm, which one could fold and give us a win? It has come to that. We are pathetic. No inside game. We shoot 30 % 30!

With Kidd we were mental weak; without Kidd weaker. Carter and RJ don’t look like leaders to me. And Harris has been a disappointment. Sure, you excuse a guy who isn’t shooting well, but why doesn’t he attack the paint? Why isn’t he showing leadership?

Come on Devin, RJ and VC are paper thin mentally, towers of jello. We need you to step up, Harris. And Thorn needs to ship them out. One of them keep, but two towers made of straw ain’t worth it.

poor ball movement, too many jumpers, another unexciting, heartless loss by a team that is only capable of playing 24 minutes per game.

by Johnny on Mar 11, 2008 8:14 AM EDT reply actions

Boone and S Williams are both hurting because J Kidd is not there anymore to pass them the ball. Devin is going to be a good player but he is a shooter (and not too accurate recently) and not a passer. We need a point guard who can get assists. Move Devin to the 2, try carter at the 1 (he is the only one on the team who can somewhat pass the ball). Marcus is also a shooter and not a passer. Hopefully the coaching staff will assess the team capabilities and design plays around the current players who we not win another game this year. Going to be tough going to the games as I hate to see the team lose.

new jersey HIGH SCHOOL vs houston rockets

the nets players just pick up jump shots most of the times and nothing else……stupid turnovers…only one big man and the key man running during offence……the rest were just standing and wait the ball to create their shot

the rockets is totally different……..all the 5 players were moving to make empty spaces for each other for an easy basket…that’s professional……what the nets have is high school attitude players and a high school coach..

by nets fan from hk on Mar 11, 2008 9:26 AM EDT reply actions

good news everybody … after last night’s game against the rockets, thorn gave frank a 5-year contract extension … can’t afford to lose ‘the little general’ … frank’s a keeper … lol

by newark hawk on Mar 11, 2008 9:36 AM EDT reply actions

They should stop televising this junk. They are unwatchable. They may be the worst team in basketball right now – won’t even beat the Knicks.

This team needs a butt kicker for a coach. Look at the Devils & Brent Sutter, he doesn’t take any crap and they are in first place.

Frank looks helpless out there. Why do the Nets have so many assistant coaches? They take up the first 2 rows behind the bench! Why does Frank need 4 assistant coaches? Maybe the players don’t know who to listen to.

by halwas on Mar 11, 2008 9:44 AM EDT reply actions

mark jackson during 3rd quarter of rockets’ game:

“look at who the nets have on the floor versus who
the rockets have on the floor … no question that
the nets have the more talented players … the
rockets have a summer league unit out there, but
     they’re dominating the nets”

couldn’t have said it any better myself … fire frank!!!

by simonsaid on Mar 11, 2008 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

a fish rots from the head down … ratner > thorn > frank > star players > role players … please ratner, sell the team to someone that wants to win!!! … otherwise, it’s knickworld here we come

by newark hawk on Mar 11, 2008 10:02 AM EDT reply actions

They essentially lost to the Rockets’ second string, because not only was Yao not there but also no Landry, and in the first half neither Battier nor McGrady hit a FG. So when the game got out of hand, it was Alston, Scola, Novak, Hayes, Mutombo, and Head that kicked their overpaid, overrated butts.

vince carter after the rockets’ game:

“we have to play inspired ball if we want to make the playoffs … we have to want to win … right now we’re not wanting it badly enough … we’re not playing inspired ball”

before trades, after trades, old nets, new nets … it doesn’t matter … as long as frank is coaching the team,
the nets will underachieve

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Mar 11, 2008 10:48 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Frank has proven himself to be a great coach by any stretch of the imagination. But first and foremost I blame these losses on the players. I watch with my own two eyes the inaction on the court. I see no heart. No intensity. No urgency. No wonder Kidd wanted out so bad. Fire Frank? If God himself came down from the heavens to coach the Nets, and drew up magically infallible plays the Nets players would still find a way to **** ’em up and the same certain ***hats would then be asking for God to get fired.

by Molskin on Mar 11, 2008 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

One More time: the coach don’t shoot. The coach don’t defend. The coach don’t rebound. The “leaders” on this team are selfish and don’t sacrifice for team. THey pad stats and stay outside where the going is easy.

by geo on Mar 11, 2008 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

FIRE FRANK!!!! the team has become unwatchable. pathetic turnovers, jumpshot after jumpshot when they are shooting (!!!) 20% and Frank on the bench looking PATHETIC. I can’t believe after the display of the team two years in a row, he still has a job…FIRE FRANK. They got rid of scott because the team “wasn’t playing hard for him anymore” after the team went to the finals, yet they can’t get rid of this loser? We need a change and it needs to start with the lifeless coach.

Frank could not get another head coaching job in the NBA…Maybe he can go back to college.

by epik on Mar 11, 2008 11:17 AM EDT reply actions

Here’s what the Nets need to do:

1. Pass the ball to the open man.
2. Open man must make the bucket
3. When other team has ball, stop that team from making the bucket.

See? It’s that easy.

by Sean Serritella YankeesDaily on Mar 11, 2008 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

@ geo & molskin

wake up and smell the coffee … as frank’s biggest defender, rod thorn, said after firing byron scott: “the players just aren’t responding to the coach’s message anymore” … the exact same thing could be said regarding lawrence frank

molskin, if you think lawrence frank and god can be mentioned in the same breath, you’ve got serious issues …
nobody’s asking for god to coach the nets … we’re just asking for a real nba head coach to do the job … frank is a junoir high school coach, at best

geo, if that’s your defense of frank, then no coach should EVER be fired, anytime, anywhere … and since coaches are just innocent bystanders, as you suggest, then who needs $5 million a year figureheads on the sidelines … just have the players call the shots

take the blinders off geo & molskin … frank is an absolute joke as a head coach … mark jackson and other nba analysts have pointed this out, in more diplomatic terms of course, on a regular basis

by newark hawk on Mar 11, 2008 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

It’s almost comical to read the same quotes over and over and over after every game. I hope Thorn has a very good plan this offseason, because I know he is hating watching this team as much as we are right now.

by Tom on Mar 11, 2008 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

kiki’s going to come to the rescue by delivering the bad news to ratner and thorn: “frank must go … there’s no way around it … frank must go” … when kiki was denver’s gm, he had a very quick hook for coach jeff bzdelik, who was a hundred times more qualified and accomplished than lawrence frank … kiki replaced bzdelik with the hardnosed motivator, george karl, and it worked wonders for denver … look for something similar to happen here … my guess is that mark jackson or rick carlisle will take over this summer, if not sooner

by newark hawk on Mar 11, 2008 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

hey… Turn Kiki loose. Trade everybody. Fire Frank. Get Derrick Coleman to coach the team. At least he can say “Woopty-damn-do” after the games, better than listening to the same old tired analysis from Frank. If we can’t stand to listen to him for a minute and a half, imagane what the players think.

by newark hawk on Mar 11, 2008 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

don’t think we should trade everybody until we see what a REAL nba head coach can do with this group … but we do need to pick up a couple shooters this summer to back up vince and rj

did you say a minute and a half of frank’s chatter is too much to take? … try a second and a half … can’t believe the players aren’t fired up after one of his pep talks … i heard the trainer uses smelling salt to wake them up afterwards … lol
