Late Laker Surge Beats Nets

The Nets played the Lakers even through the first half Tuesday night at the IZOD Center, but L.A. scored 58 points after the break to come out with a 15-point victory. It was just a three-point game with six minutes to go and the Nets had gotten an apparent stop, but Pau Gasol took a rebound away from Josh Boone and converted a three-point play to spark an 11-2 run to put the game away. Kobe Bryant injured his hand and was held to just six points by Jason Kidd and Vince Carter, but Gasol scored 24 in his Laker debut and Derek Fisher led all scorers with 28. Carter led the Nets with 27 points on 10-of-26 from the field after Phil Jackson made some less than complimentary remarks about his game. Boki Nachbar came up big off the bench, but Richard Jefferson, after getting hit with a Lamar Odom elbow early and taking stitches above his left eye, struggled offensively.

Negatives: Nenad only played two minutes and really didn’t get a chance to be involved. Swift didn’t play. Marcus is still playing poorly. Wright is really off. RJ got knocked in the face (couldn’t get anything going all night because of it).
Positives: Carter got some of his hops back (jumpshot still remains elsewhere) and Boki realized that he’s actually a 3 point shooter (4-5 from downtown).
We played evenly with the Lakers, until the middle of the fourth quarter when we started taking bad shots and letting up on the defensive end. The actual game was played much more evenly than the score indicates.
Luckily, our fellow EC teams don’t seem to be tearing it up any better than we are. We are still in eighth, and are only 4.5 games back from sixth.

frank gets way too much slack. his lack of confidence in his best players is killing this team. and his confidence in his worst players adds to it big time.
so many bad decisions frank made in this game, definitelty cost the game for the nets.
you can start by playing small all night. you cant have boki on odom and boone on gasol for most of the night. thats why the nets couldnt rebound the ball properly especially on the defensive end. gasol is not a banger, so having boone on him(who’s actually a power forward not a center) was an awful decision. gasol was just shooting and rebounding over boone all night. the proper matchup on gasol is swill. swill can contest gasol’s shot and gasol wont be able to rebound over him so easily as he did with boone.
nachbar had a great game, but he cant defend the 4 especially odom. nachbar had to be on the floor, cause he was scoring, but not at the 4 all night. boone should of been on oddom most of the night. and than nachbar should of had most of jefferson’s minutes tonight since rj was not on his game, whether its defense or offense. yeas rj is a mainstay, but frank should always have the players that are playing bets on the floor at all time. what that would do is create a fire and competition between players to play better when they get their chances.
what the heck was malik allen doing on the court against the lakers. he is by far the worst defender that has put on a net uniform ever. its despicable. the guy is such a liability on defense that it puts the team under so much pressure most the time it cant be overcome.
carter was going great all game long, then why did frank put carter in corner (where’s he’s been at half the season ) for the majority of the 4th. he went to his motion bull and going through rj more than he did all game long , which never works and can be credited for the nets awful offense this year, and the nets all rythim they had offensively. frank should of rode carter all 4th quarter, since he was going good. i just dont get franks decisions.
then there;s the defense. how can frnk be a defense first coach yet his team is just horrendous on that side of the ball. they always leave wide open shooters, and help when help isnt needed. d-fish just massacred the nets cause he was left open every time. frank has to insist that the helper isnt the player thats guarding him especially since he’s the hot hand. this is a recurring mistake by the nets. you know if it was once in a while, then its the players to blame, but since its all the time, its the coach to blame. his team makes the same mistakes ove and over again. what is it, is he coaching them that way or they arnt listebning to him, wither case its his fault.
frank’s substitution pattern is horrible. he always has a knack to sub out the player who’s playing well, and he always subs in the totally wrong player for that particular point in the game. i’m sure that stro will be the next magloire, and mags could of been very useful against pau tonight and on rebounding which would of saved the nets at least 20 points, and frank will have malik allen taking his minutes. did you’all hear the fans boo when walton cored on allen without allen even defending him. he’s useless, for every 2 point he gets, and it has to be a wide open jumper, he lets in 6. so that a liability.
the nets offense is horrible, especially when vince is on the bench. even if vince isnt having one of his best games, his mere presence gives the nets some cohesion on the court. kidd isnt playing anymore. he puts up some stats but he isnt putiing his usual mark on the game or imposes his will on the game. only vince and boki came to play full throttle toniht. its becoming a recurring thing with the nets players not playing hard every game. why is that? cause frank just doesnt command the respect required. he doesnt fire up his players, he doesnt inspire them to play for something. the nets feel that since they are in the playoffs thats enough, and if their spot is threatened then they’ll play. well thats frank’s job to keep his players focused all season long, and have each layer play their best and play at their highest level at all time. do you think if phil was the nets coach kidd or carter would play half heartedly most the time. i dont think so.
and whats this with kristic. kristic should be playing more, or else he’ll never get in a groove. and he needs to play with kidd and carter, so they can make the game easier for him. frank just doesnt know how to handle his players. his inexperience showed when he brought him too early and cost the nets kristic for an addtioinal two moths. and now he doesnt know how to use him effectively so he can come back stronger. he should go ask doc rivers what he did with p.allen. look at that player now, he’s much less talented than kristic, he had his torn acl imuch later than krrstich’s and he’s a main player on the celts.
something is wrong with the nets. for a veteran team who’s played a long time together now, he should of never changed anything in training camp. that also shows his inexperience with handling players and a team. if the nets would of build on last year and the year before they would of been a much better team today. they would of been a TEAM. they have no identity, they dont play as a team, they dont know how to handle adversity on and off the court, they are just a waste of talent.
this nets team needs a serious change. the absolutwly best option ios to fire frank. imagine this nets team with larry brown, they would be contenders. they would have them play a certain style and he would of never accepted the silly mistakes the nets game in and game out. frank’s has the worst defense and offense in this league statistically. he also is the most underachieving coach in the league. this group of players, who have shown they can play at a high level, should not have the worst offense and defense.
the other option is to trade jefferson. he’s just not a star. he cant carry the offense, doesnt make any player around him btter, he depends on his teammtes, especially kidd and carter, way too much, very overated defender, he’s been anemic on defense this year cant gueard no one and makes way too many mistakes. frank has him playing the role of the team’s star and go to guy. its not jefferson’s fault but frank has to be able to know what his players are capable of and put them in postition to succeed without affecting the team in a negative way. against the lakers in the 4th, when they were making their run, instead of riding carter, he went to his motion crap and tried to force the issue with jefferson. all it did is kill any offensive ryhtin and flow they had. jefferson is a great super role player, who cxan play like a star sometimes, but he isnt a star all the time. his game doesnt allow him to be so. he’s an aggressive athlete who knows what his strenghts and weaknesses are and plays to his strenghts. but this year frank has rj doing things he’s not capable of, basically taking vc’s role and giving it to rj, and its affecting the team negatively. i would rather have rj and fire frank, cause any other coach in the league would run their offense thorugh vc most of the time, but frank doesnt look he’s going nowhere. so f rj is traded than frank will have no choice buut to run the same offense he ran the last 4 years since vc bcame a net. undr frank rj and vc just isnt working. the nets wone only one quarter and it was the 1st when rj got hit. its no coincidence, the nets play better as a team when he’s not on the floor. when he’s on the floor, it either becomes a two man game or a one man game when rj ’s number is called. he doesnt have the ability too make the correct decisions to keep the offense in fklow. thats why frank has to limit initiating the offense through rj, cause alll rj initiates is either a drive to the basket without passing to the open man, free thorws which is ok, or turnovers. the ebst offense is have vc on the block if the double team comes swing it to kidd and he can swing it to rj on the weak side , then rj will eiyher have an open lane or a step ahead of the defender. rj is a great scorer but he cant initiate the offense. thats whats killing the nets on offense this year. frank tried o initiate the offense through rj, which results to no team offense. thats one of the main reason net players havent been able to get in a steady ruythin all year.
the coach i9s to blame here. the ents will never be successfull unless frank gets his act staright or he’s fired. the nets are not a team. they have no identity, they have no team chemistry, they dont know how to play consistent team defense, or offense, they are not inspired. thos nets team is super talented, and if frank would pf prepared differently and was able to caoch properly ad make the correct decisions, they would of won this game.
one the nets blame carter for losing, when he plays well they still lose, then they blame kidd, when he plays well they lose, then they blame the defense, when they play good defense they dont score and vice versa. point being the nets have way too many holes that are not covered by the coach. he gets paid upper echelon salary for coaches in the league, then whats his job, drwing out a play and if the nets dont execute its their fault. frank cannot manage the whole aspect of a NBA team, and its showing mightely this year.
the nets are lost and blame frank for it. you can tell kiki and frank arnt on the same page. most gm’s consult their coaches before making a trade. obviously frank is very hurt for not having collins on his team still, and boy he souded pathetic and stupid the way he was talking about him, so you can tell that the gm’s disregarded frank on that trade. that means something. if it was up to frank, collins would still be here, and stro wouldnt be here. but it seems that thorn is running out of excuses for frank, and kiki sees things in perspective. if kiki was gm here to replace thorn, frank would of been long gone. what a shame of a coach. i’m disgusted by him as a netfan.

rj did not show up. Carter had some special Vince-like moments. he also did a perfect job defensively on Kobe.

Did you watch the game or just look at the box score? RJ got hit in the eye and needed stitches. So anyone expecting a good game after a hit like that is expecting too much.
Oh and it wasn’t all Carter on Kobe. Kobe also dislocated his finger on his shooting hand.

Vinve needs to stop playing and play hard every night like he did here. THere were so stars in the building and a good crowd so carter played hard. He shouldnt need some outside person or motivation to make him play like this it should come from within, thats what seperates him from being great!

KIDD IS DOGGING IT!!!
Did you see that Gasol to Fisher baseline give & go?! Kidd made NO EFFORT to stay with Fisher, who scored a layup as a result. Almost a CAREER HIGH for Fisher. How many times have we heard that this season for the guy Kidd is “guarding”?!
Did you see Kidd’s 3 turnovers in 80 seconds to start the 3rd quarter?! Other Nets soon followed their captain’s lead
with ATTROCIOUS BALL-HANDLING AND DEFENSE.
All while Frank continues to do nothing but scream out plays and yell “go, go, go” from the sideline. If Frank had any onions he would bench Kidd whenever he starts dogging it, call him out on the sideline and call him out in film sessions. Anybody here think that will ever happen?! Not in this lifetime. Thanks to Thorn ,Frank and ‘The Groper’, the Nets have become a freaking joke!!!

Like I said – Carter was great, Kidd was Kidd, and Jefferson was horrible.
I say give Kidd what he wants – but must get a PG in return. Lakers don’t need him at all – I think Fisher is better than Kidd at this point. Dallas is probably the best bet.
Also, trade Jefferson. I can’t exactly put my finger on it – but there is something about his game that doesn’t work. He’s great sometimes – but the team needs a consistent performer which Jefferson definitely is NOT.
Build around Carter.

Hey halwas, RJ WAS HIT IN THE EYE!!!
Inconsistent? Let’s compare RJ and Carter the past 5 games not including this game. See who’s consistent or not.
RJ: 23/4/2, 9-18
25/4/2, 11-19
20/5/2, 8-12
35/7/2, 11-22
19/5/2, 7-16
Carter: 14/10/2, 5-12
14/7/11, 5-14
16/5/12, 6-22
25/5/1, 9-18
13/7/7, 5-16
Huh, sure Carter’s been consistent, in a way. At least you know what your going to get out of RJ.
by kevin on Feb 6, 2008 2:54 PM EST reply actions
Can’t just look at that.
Where does it show the number of mistakes RJ makes?
The number of turnovers? The number of defensive lapses?
I’m not saying that Carter has been playing well up until the last game – he hasn’t. I don’t know what was wrong. But he is a very gifted player. When Carter is going right – there is no comparison between him and RJ.
RJ could be a great player too – but his game is lacking something. He is in the wrong place too often, loses the ball too often, misses assignments too often, drives when he should pull up, pulls up when he should drive, misses the open man. Its a lack of awareness.

mina, great analysis of the game. Someone needs to forward that to Rod Thorn, maybe he’ll realize how much of an idiot he is!!!!!!

FIRE FRANK!, WHY IS HE NOT PLAYING KRISTIC. FIRE FRANK! WHY DID HE RUN THE MOTION OFFENSE IN THE 4TH WHEN CARTER IS ON, FOR WHAT? TO GET RJ GOING, FIRE FRANK! BECAUSE HE DOSENT HAVE THE GUTS TO GET ON HIS STAR PLAYERS DURING THE GAME. FIRE FRANK BECAUSE HE PLAYS BOKI AT THE 4 SPOT TO GUARD ODOM AND BOONE AGAINST GASOL WHO IS VERY MOBILE AND NOT A BANGER THATS WHY HE WAS GETTING JUMPERS ALL NIGHT IN HIS FACE, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SEAN ON GASOL. GASOL KILLED US ON THE REBOUNDS WHERE IS MAGLOIRE! FIRE FRANK. FIREFRANK.COM

Tell that to the other people that only used Carters stat line of 20/5/5 to back up that he’s great. They never ever used his mistakes. Now that it comes to RJ, that’s the only thing your going to use? Doesn’t sound fair. And it’s not like Carter hasn’t made mistakes, he’s made a lot too.
