Game 18 - Timberwolves @ Nets - Friday, November 5, 7:30

Jason Collins becomes the first of last year's starters to return to Jersey Friday when Minnesota (4-13) drops by. Al Jefferson's coming too...and that could be a bigger problem. Jefferson has twice set career highs against the Nets, coming within one rebound of a 40-20 game last season. Mike Miller (ankle) is questionable. The Nets will be put to the test: will they play like they did vs. the Wiz or revert to winning form.

Vince needs to show how much of a captain he is this game

by iftekhar on Dec 4, 2008 4:15 PM EST reply actions

Al Jefferson loves schooling the nets. He has the best moves for any big man in the game today. Kevin McCale has done a great job with him. But Devin Harris and Carter should have there way. THis is a MUST WIN.

Netsdaily! November was a good month in Nets history, but let’s move on. Let’s hope December is an even better month.

Keys to the game: Vince bring his game, Brook come to play, and let Devin attack.

nets daily mistake collins isnt the first player to retirn marcus williams was

by joe t on Dec 4, 2008 5:29 PM EST reply actions

I just want to take a moment to talk about Sean Williams.

Does anyone else remember him last year when he came in primarily at the PF position? He ended the season with 106 blocks playing in only 73 games and averaging just 17 minutes. Thats including the fact that he was constantly in foul trouble and getting pulled out of the game. I mean, shiet, it pisses me off that LFRANK keeps playing him out of position at the Center spot. How is he supposed to match up with the Shaq’s and the other center’s who loom over his 6’9 – 6’10 frame. Play him in his natural position. Stop making him look like a fool.

I know I know, its clear that he hasn’t improved drastically otherwise he’d be doing better than he’s been doing, but at least give him a chance.. goddam!

by HLC on Dec 4, 2008 5:47 PM EST reply actions

The Nets have to win this game, if they don’t a lot of energy will be sucked out.

Harris- Unlike the Washington game, we have to get people out of the paint and allow Harris to beat his defender 1 on 1 and get to the paint and draw a foul.

Carter- has to be aggressive and continue to attack the basket.

Simmons- Pleeeeeeeeease, hit ur j’s.

Yi- Pleeeeeeeease, hit ur j’s and stay out of foul trouble.

Brook- tough matchup against Jefferson, but he has to stay committed and out of foul trouble in the game and have a nice game on the offensive side. He has been struggling the past few games, and let’s hope it doesn’t continue and that his success was only for 8-10 games.

Dooling- Once Harris leaves, Dooling has to be our Harris 2.0 which I think he is capable of doing. He is a good defender, can score, and brings energy.

CDR- Let him play Frank!!!

Hayes/RA- Hit your 3s, play D, bring energy.

Swat- if and when Brook leaves the game for foul trouble, Swat has to come in and play good defense against Jefferson.

I give em a pass on that last game. They were exhausted from the road trip. At least they busted their butts out west for 3 out of 4. Still over 500 after the loss. Back to winning form tomorrow.

by J Tallent on Dec 4, 2008 6:26 PM EST reply actions

Vince carter’s going for 50, so watch out wolves.

lol anyway this is an absolute MUST WIN. We already know we can compete against the best, we just have to establish ourselves at home, and take care of games that were expected to win.

Now VC may not go for 50 tonight, but Harris is going to be attacking the bastket, so the same for him as well. We know they’ll deliver, but it’s our frontcourt that needs to step up.

Al Jefferson is a moster down low, and Brook will have a hard time against him. But thankfully Brook can hold his own and can play good D.

We need to make sure Mike Miller also doesn’t go off.
And watc out for Kevin Love.

Yi and Anderson have to be major contributors in this game.

We can win this game. But anything can happen.

So let’s see how these Nets can play.

EVERYONE SHOULD GIVE JASON COLLINS A STANDING O! he was a key part of our finals run and our playoff run.sure he didn’t score and i got down on him too but he was still a big part of those teams

On a side note, in the race to mvp, in their mailbag, Rob Peterson has responded to Devin Harris being a future mvp candidate, and proclaims that Vince Carter is healthy and looks like the VC of old, considering them both to be in the outside looking in!!!!

I am alright with the loss from Washington. It was an off night. If we won that game I might not sleep again, NETS winning the games from the west are all exciting and made me stayed late.
Brooks is having problem, but that is understandable. He is learning to do the screen and this should help since Jefferson is not good at defending.
Harris should be too quick for the T’s.
Now that we have CDR, we should be happier. He could give us more offense. Hope he picks up something from Harris
Good luck again to NETS.

Frank has to give minutes to Swat and CDR, Swat needs playin time to develop, the bigs take very time to develop, and CDR oh man I like him a lot, he’s a guy that can be our 3rd scorer at least one time per week! I believe in his potential to be a star player, this team his showing lot of promise!
GO NETS!

R.M.
agree with u carter is pissed, hes gonna go off. honestly looking at the t-wolves roster they cant d us on the perimeter. who they gonna put on vince, mike miller? ha hes gonna take him to the hole everytime or get him in fowl trouble.

people keep sayin al jeff is gonna kill us again like he always does. as far as im concerned no one that defended him the last couple years will be playing on fri, so i beleive that is irrelvant.

hes gonna go crazy

by matt on Dec 4, 2008 11:39 PM EST reply actions

YOu guys need to realize. When Carter said the next team has to pay, he’s talking as the captain not as an individual.
He said it, and the whole team has to back it up, not just him. I don’t care if he goes off, but the team has to come out with a lot of energy.

by croc on Dec 4, 2008 11:42 PM EST reply actions

The NBA season is not a sprint, it is a marathon. Nets need to take care of business with the wolves tonight. Look for playing time changes over the next week, with players coming back from injuries, and things shaking out with Sean and Simmons. I don’t believe that the Nets aren’t on the phones trying to move Swift/Sean. Hope CDR gets some playing time over the next two weeks, so we can see what’s he’s got.

by Paul Erstein on Dec 4, 2008 11:52 PM EST reply actions

I fear Al Jefferson. He too has had a mediocre past few games…

All you Frank haters suggesting changes, now is not the time, I want a win. Lets stick with whats been working.

@HLC & lilbigman

About S.Will:

I too remember how he played last year. I remember vividly the first game he got significant minutes (game 6 vs. Boston) and made Garnett look mortal immediately. And then he kept blocking shots to the point that I expected at least 1 highlight block per game from him.

The problem is, that with Boone injured, we have no back up center. Yi isn’t gonna play center, he may be taller then sean, but he’s way too weak and at least Sean can make up for his size with his leaping ability. Ryan ain’t playing center…so that leaves it to Sean. I hope that’s the reason he’s playing Center now.

I want to see him playing the 4 too. I think he could excel there as a shotblocker and defensive presence. I’ve noticed that in most of the games we’ve won this year Sean played really solid defense and held his man down coming off the bench, which is actually a pretty big part of our success in those games. Every game I was dreading Brookes second foul and SWill replacing him, but he’s done an incredible job on the defensive end against Det,Utah,Phx etc…

…I would def. give him the benefit of the doubt for these reasons:

1) He has ridiculous athleticism
2) He has a knack for blocks, no one else on this team does
3) He is really young and only started playing at 15
4) He looks like he really cares, he cheers his team on like what, we need his spirit. He started shoving Amare around after one play.
5) Has alot of upside, but may take several more years to reach his potential
6) We’re not getting anything of interest for him anyways.

If we give up on him, we may see him in 2 years as an elite blocker/defender/heart player in this league as a PF in someone elses system.

Some people say he’s dumb. But if he only started playing Ball at 15 (And most of these guys in this leage started at 5) then I think he’s really smart, just lacking experience. There is no substitute for experience.

by me on Dec 5, 2008 9:24 AM EST reply actions

Collins? Who cares about Collins. I was elated to see his uncoordinated butt finally out the door. I’m surprised he’s still in the NBA. He obviously isn’t contributing on a 4-13 team either.

The Nets better not blow this one. They can’t start losing home games like they did last season.

by halwas on Dec 5, 2008 10:37 AM EST reply actions

halwas maybe you werent a net fan before last year because he was a big part of our team. he was barely injured and played hard but you probably didnt realize. and its unfair that he is on a terrible team he does better on teams that are good and need a good help defender. hopefully next year he signs with the spurs our something

by ben on Dec 5, 2008 11:01 AM EST reply actions

Counting on VC to make a statement! Jefferson killed us with the C’s and again in MN last year. Must stop him.

by mt57 on Dec 5, 2008 11:30 AM EST reply actions

If Collins actually plays(i think he was injured before) i predict he goes for 1pt 3rebs

by TheMann on Dec 5, 2008 11:55 AM EST reply actions

Hey Ben – I have been watching the Nets for years. Jason Collins was the worst starting center I have ever seen. No hands, couldn’t jump, couldn’t shoot, could hardly dunk the ball, never blocked a shot, got stuffed every time he tried a layup. Terrible. Why Frank liked him is beyond me. Lopez is already 10 times better than Collins ever was.

And on another subject, Frank is starting to show his same stupid stubborn streak with Simmons. He needs to try something else, Anderson would be my choice. But you could try Hayes or Boone or even give CDR a shot.

by halwas on Dec 5, 2008 12:07 PM EST reply actions

he wasnt an offensive player and he scored when he needed to. as i said he was the best help defender and thats what brook does now. i like lopez 100 times more then collins but what he meant for this team was greatly appreciated why do u think his teammates always defended him. i remember kidd said he should b in the running for defensive player of the year. so really you dont pay attention to the game like most people dont but i realize ****. Also Simmons is decent we arent that bad with him in the starting lineup give him a chance kid

by ben on Dec 5, 2008 12:31 PM EST reply actions

@ me

The problem is Frank now sees Swat as a 5. I never understood why Swat started the year out of the rotation until one game early in the year (it might have been that first Phoenix game cause we had Lopez and Boone at the time) and Opie brings in Swat at the 5 and then it dawned on me why he is out of the rotation. When Boone was hurt in preseason he had Swat backup Lopez and I thought it was out of necessity just like it is now but it isn’t cause of that Phoenix game it showed Opie’s preference to play him at the 5 and the reason is imo the Nets are committed to Yi for reasons other than ability and only sees him at the 4. If Opie plays Swat at the 4 with Lopez and it works out, Opie will look like an obvious fool if he stuck with Yi at the 4.
I think the blocked shot is simply the most important aspect of basketball and the 4 best statisically are Swat, Lopez, Boone, and Yi. Those 4 should get the bulk of the minutes up front with Boone backing up Swat and Lopez with Yi at the 3 backed up by Anderson. To me anything other than that and the team is underachieving.

by libigman on Dec 5, 2008 12:53 PM EST reply actions

When you excel on offense only then you are prone to inconsistancy because a good defensive team will stop you but when you excel defensively you might win “ugly” but you will be more consistant.

by libigman on Dec 5, 2008 1:03 PM EST reply actions

@ halwas
Why do you only respond when Jason Collins is the topic? LOL

Unless you forgot, Byron Scott gave Collins LOTS of minutes, and he produced. All you care about are stats. Just like most of the people here.

by kevin on Dec 5, 2008 1:34 PM EST reply actions

He got minutes because there was no alternative. And his stats were TERRIBLE (2 points 3 rebounds). It was always the “intangibles”.

But in a way you’re right – no sense talking about him any more.

I believe the Nets are now 1 player away from being a contender. They need a 3. (And Yi needs to improve). Amazing job by Thorn & co.
