VC: "The Next Team Has To Pay for It - Plain and Simple"

Trying to reignite the team pride that carried the Nets to their most successful west coast trip in years, Vince Carter has been telling his teammates, particularly Devin Harris, that whatever happened Tuesday night is "unacceptable". Not exempting himself from criticism, VC added the only way to get back on track is to push hard Friday vs. Minnesota...or face the possibility of losing all that momentum.

trade simmons !!!!

by blahblob on Dec 3, 2008 1:34 PM EST reply actions

Let’s get the focus back on Timberwolves. Also let your mind think that you are playing LA Lakers instead of Timberwolves. I declare that will add up to a win.

by Runnin' on Dec 3, 2008 1:47 PM EST reply actions

Its horrible as a die hard fan to read articles like this, right after reading articles about how there is more then a 50-50 chance that they will trade away VC.

Serenity now!

by Tim on Dec 3, 2008 1:55 PM EST reply actions

thats the attitude of a captain, we better not trade vc we need to find takers for simmons and yi….lets go nets lets kill the timberwolves…

by bdawg on Dec 3, 2008 2:04 PM EST reply actions

You’re right, Tim. If we trade VC we’re really gonna find out how much he means to this team. Then we will really be in rebuilding mode and nothing else.

by YehYeh on Dec 3, 2008 2:08 PM EST reply actions

Hey guys, I welcome a VC trade as long as it with a winning team. I am a diehard VC fan. I would love for him to stay here but that’s just selfish of ME!

by Runnin' on Dec 3, 2008 2:15 PM EST reply actions

I love how there are 3 SF’s available and we haven’t talked to any team about one. Marion, Wallace, and Maggette. There were rumors, but as always the nets didn’t come through

by jerrod on Dec 3, 2008 2:56 PM EST reply actions

let’s vote yi into the allstars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to see what the other stars will do to him.

by lol on Dec 3, 2008 3:08 PM EST reply actions

The Nets needed to lose to Washington as a wake me up call. Hopefully this got their attention. They just don’t need to let the next team pay, they need to let every team they play pay. They don’t need to win all of the games (that would be great) but compete and make every team feel they don’t want to meet up with the Nets, especially in the playoffs. Before Christmas, I expect this team to be a well oiled machine. Players are returning from injury that will be hungry.

by BigNetsFan on Dec 3, 2008 3:17 PM EST reply actions

NBA players worth anything, don’t like to sit. By next week, unless there are new injuries, everybody will be available to play. Somebody has to be inactive, and someone has to sit and watch from the bench. LFrank can’t play 12 players. The magic number is 10 at the most. Frankly, 9 works even better, provided there is no foul trouble. AND there is only one ball! It is time to realign the first and second units, so that there is scoring on both. Expect Simmons to be down around 10 minutes from now on. With Boone coming back, expect him and Lopez to split time 60-40. In competitive games, don’t expect Sean to get any more playing time, with Boone and Najera back on the bench. As we approach the 30 game mark, expect more changes in the rotation, and maybe even a roster move or two.

by Paul Erstein on Dec 3, 2008 3:28 PM EST reply actions

That third quarter last night was brutal to watch.

The Nets and the Mets….“Making bad teams look beautiful”

by Weakside on Dec 3, 2008 3:40 PM EST reply actions

Does Frank deserve criticism if he continues to play Simmons ? Honestly, is it not the coach’s job to distribute playing time “fairly”?

by biggie on Dec 3, 2008 3:55 PM EST reply actions

No Frank deserves no criticism for playing Simmons, who else do he have at the 3…..Jarvis isn’t a starter, and if he does start we lose him of the bench.. He just is a much better bench player…CDR is too young and IMO a bit too short to play the 3.

Now all that being said, I would be really mad when Boone returns if he doesn’t start Boone. and I don’t mean taking out Brook. I mean let’s play Boone and Brook together and put Yi at the three, we have nothing to lose by trying this!

Devin
Vince
Yi
Boone
Brook

it is going to be an adjustment for both Boone and Yi but I think it could work. That is really the only solution to getting rid of Simmons….plus that puts him on the bench which I think he is better at…

by Jad on Dec 3, 2008 4:05 PM EST reply actions

Carter should have thought of making Washington pay when he was going through the motions last night

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 3, 2008 4:05 PM EST reply actions

Simmons is just way too much of a streak shooter. Thank the lord we have consistency off the bench with purple Hayes

by Weakside on Dec 3, 2008 4:12 PM EST reply actions

Calling Simmons a streak shooter does not describe how much he sucks.
Stevenson is a streak shooter, too, but when he’s on a streak he’d kill other teams. Simmons? Not so much.

by biggie on Dec 3, 2008 4:26 PM EST reply actions

Yes, the Nets isn’t perfect, but the team has a legitimate reason to be a top 4 and 5 team in the East.
If it doesn’t happen, it has a lot to do with Simmons. Why?

Name a starter in Cavs, Boston, Detriot, Hawks, and Orlando who is worse than Bobby Simmons? Name one!
So you can’t say……oh it’s defense or offensive execution. Yes, those things matter, but the quality of your starters also matter. If you have one starter who is worse than others, that is a real disadvantage. You can’t expect VC and Harris to play like supermen every game to cover up this hole. Simmons blows…plain and simple!

by croc on Dec 3, 2008 4:49 PM EST reply actions

Simmons is shooting at 35% this season.

’Nuff said.

by warstory91 on Dec 3, 2008 5:08 PM EST reply actions

*36%

by warstory91 on Dec 3, 2008 5:08 PM EST reply actions

i love how this article had nothing to deal with Bobby Simmons but yet everyone is commenting about him. I don’t want to say he sucks because he is in the NBA, but for sure is not better than Richard Jefferson as he said, “I think im a better all around player than RJ.” This guy needs to find another day job. Take him out and start purple Hayes!!!

by Lennie Bekford on Dec 3, 2008 5:10 PM EST reply actions

that’s what a leader does. He speaks to his team, he tells them what’s up, he puts the blame on his shoulders, that’s it…..

VC is going for 50 against the Timberwolves.

Now addressing Bobby Simmons. We can’t blame our losses soley on Simmons.

Everybody had an off night last night, and we know bobby Simmons, when at best is a bad Jarvis Hayes, because when Hayes plays bad he still knocks down his shots.

So for now we got a bad sf. OKAY OKAY enough! Were not doing anything about him right now, all we need is that someone else can step up, instead of having Devin and VC both scoring 50 points a game together. And were leaning on a rookie to be our 3rd option? Or a 2nd year Chinese shooter, who needs to play at the 3 instead of the 4.

Man if we could just have Hayes at the 3, then life would be easier.

by R.M on Dec 3, 2008 5:13 PM EST reply actions

we better make them pay
or im goin to get even more pissed off

by kingching on Dec 3, 2008 5:50 PM EST reply actions

I actually would dare anyone to name an SF worse than Simmons in the NBA.
Simmons cannot put the ball on the floor, and he misses most of his open shots. Why is he in the NBA, really?
He averaged only 15 mins per game in a loosing team last year. We’re giving him 27 mins now, so you gotta imagine how much more others have to do to cover his axx.

by croc on Dec 3, 2008 5:54 PM EST reply actions

its easy to hang your head when you play at IZOD. there is little to no fan support to pick the team up. VC needs to be more vocal when the team is down 5 points not 15. he needs to take the ball, put his head down and drive to the basket

by dj heavyduty on Dec 3, 2008 5:57 PM EST reply actions

The best nba head coaches have the ability to sense when their players are too high on themselves and then use their practice sessions, film sessions, locker-room speeches and media interviews to bring their players back down to earth.

Likewise, if the players are too down on themselves, then the head coach can use those forums to raise his players’ spirits.

The best nba head coaches, such as phil jackson and gregg popovich, are masters at playing these psychological mind games with their players. That’s why their players rarely have mail-in, no-show performances like the nets did last night.

Frank just doesn’t have the god-given ability to play these very critical mind games with his players. Regardless of personnel changes, the nets just go through the motions time and time again under his leadership. Last night’s game was a movie that nets fans have seen wayyyyyyy too many times before.

by brooklyn bob on Dec 3, 2008 6:00 PM EST reply actions

Didn’t some of you predict 15-19 wins for us? Come now, own up. All of the sudden you’re expecting us to win every night, else whatever you go on and on about. Howbout giving the team and Frank some credit? OK, we’re all pi$$ed we lost a game. Get over it.

by YehYeh on Dec 3, 2008 6:23 PM EST reply actions

35%? I dare not look at how many shots he’s missed, or I’m going to puke. And if I see Yi miss another shot, I will throw a tomato at him. What is Frank doing, putting those two bozos on the court?!!!!

by Ballagurl on Dec 3, 2008 6:24 PM EST reply actions

I honeslty believe that this game is going to be another turning point.

I think we deserved to lose because we didn’t play with that intensity that we had back in the West Coast trip.
It’s a wakeup call that tells us we have to not just play mediocre, but play with intensity because no game is given.

If the Pacer’s can beat both the Lakers and the Celtics, then anythings possible.

by R.M on Dec 3, 2008 6:34 PM EST reply actions

hey, man the Pacers are a strong team, they will make some more noise when they’re best player last season Dunleavy returns! And TJ Ford will get even better, this guy is a stud!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Dec 3, 2008 7:01 PM EST reply actions

@yehyeh
some things that happens on the team are just unnaceptable we’re just giving our thoughts about what the nets could do better
and after beating the suns and the jazz on back to back games
and being able to rest a whole two days(jet lag is not an excuse)to come home and lose to the wizards who had about a 3-12 record
you wouldn’t get pissed off and criticize the nets?
I know. you probably didn’t even watch the game and see what stupid mistakes and horrible shots the nets had.

Some shots that the wizards took though were guarded pretty well I think that they got lucky on a lot of jump shots. That was kind of wierd

by kingching on Dec 3, 2008 7:11 PM EST reply actions

oh yea
FIRE FRANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

by kingching on Dec 3, 2008 7:12 PM EST reply actions

I came up with this trade

Vince carter for Kevin Durant.
We get a young scorer who has shown he can score in the league and thats with a team that has nobody. Imagine how much better he would be with the nets.
Oklahoma will be getting Carter who they’ll use to get fans to the games and raise interest in their team.
Maybe draft picks will have to be included

Thoughts?

by ronnie on Dec 3, 2008 7:34 PM EST reply actions

I’m sorry but you have got to be crazy to think a Kevin Durant / Vince Carter trade is even feasible.

If Vince Carter gets traded it’s to a team willing to take on his contract & age for the chance to contend for a title…there are too many obvious reasons why a start up team like the Thunder would not make this deal…c’mon..this doesn’t even pass the common sense test…

by Devin on Dec 3, 2008 8:00 PM EST reply actions

ronnie Why? Just ask yourself why

by jerrod on Dec 3, 2008 8:28 PM EST reply actions

Why the hell will there be even idea about trading Carter.. like WTF; we should at least keep harris and carter and trade the other players to center around them….
Like Bobby simmons who’s contract is $7m or around there….
or we can fire frank and Hire Sam Mitchell :P

off topic – i always wanted to know how teams offer trades; maybe i play nba live 09 too much, but do real nba teams have like trading blocks; like see what teams in the nba offer for your player?*

by blahblob on Dec 3, 2008 8:31 PM EST reply actions

I don’t understand why some idiots would say Hayes isn’t a starter, when Simmons has been showing nothing worthy on the court.
People need to freaking wake up. Simmons averaged 15 mins with a pathetic Bucks team; Hayes averaged 15 mins with a championship contender Pistons team.
Start Hayes, and split the rest of the playing time between Simmons and CDR—those two gotta fight for it. Hayes has done everything that should warrant him the most playing time of the three. It’s Simmons and CDR who have to fight it out.
Yes, it is that simple!

by croc on Dec 3, 2008 8:37 PM EST reply actions

@ jerrod
o and in response to that possible marion deal, i could see a scenario in which we obtain marion in exchange for stro, bobby simmons, sean williams and josh boone. it works finiancially but i dont beleive miami would be willing to do this trade, yes they desperatly needs bigs, especially athletic ones with big upside and Sf to replace marion but icant see them doing it

number one marion is a free agent this summer freeing up over 18 mil, so that they can pursue carlos boozer which has been much talked about.

however on the flip side all the nets contracts end in the next 2 years, so its basically just waiting another summer for the heat for the 2010 FAs.

but im not so sure it makes sense for the nets, yes marion is a versatile and talented player, but odds are it will only be for the remained of the season, no way will marion take a one year deal and we cant afford to resign because we will be going after BronBron.

it seems like a good idea, but i can see y managment decided not to pursue it.

by Timmmy on Dec 3, 2008 8:37 PM EST reply actions

im sorry ronnie but do u no anything about basketball. y in the world would okc give up a kid that is like 20 and will def be the future of the nba for an old/expensive and past his prime carter. thats no disrespect to carter its just facts. plus the salaries wouldn’t matchup at all okc would have to give up expiring contracts something that a rebuilding franchise cant afford to do

by Timmmy on Dec 3, 2008 8:38 PM EST reply actions

i thought this article talks about wolves?
Al Jeff likes to play the Nets eversince he was wearing green.
Vince and Durrant? deal – if its up to me :)
Simmons to bench? i’m in.
yi, boone, brook @ 3, 4, 5? worth a try, but it doesn’t make sense does it? I thought the idea of having 2 shooters is to create space for Devin/VC. I know that this dribble drive thing works, so lets just stick with it.

by freddie on Dec 3, 2008 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Exactly, dribble-drive works, but you gotta have players who can in fact dribble and drive.
Simmons dribbles= turnover
simmons drives = turnover
Simmons shoots = bricks or airball

If you are the coach, what sense does it make to insist playing him?

by biggie on Dec 3, 2008 9:18 PM EST reply actions

This may work.

VC for Manu+Bowen. Both contracts expire on 2010.

by TK on Dec 3, 2008 9:19 PM EST reply actions

anyone who thinks simmons is a starter let alone an nba player is a buffoon. including frank. he doesnt even start on my nba2k9! matter of fact he plays 0 minutes.

get wallace in here or even ariza!

by SUPERB on Dec 3, 2008 10:23 PM EST reply actions

That’s BS Runnin’… so you think it would be OK to trade VC and all we get is Wally Zerbisuck?

I want VC to win, but not everyone is going to win a championship dammit! I cant bare to have another favorite player of mine be shipped of, my heart cant take any more of this!

by Tim on Dec 3, 2008 11:31 PM EST reply actions

I can’t wait to see the return of Jason Collins at the Izod Center!!!

by Billy on Dec 4, 2008 1:56 AM EST reply actions

Ronnie that was the stupidest trade idea ever. to actually think that the thunder would say yes to a trade like that you have to really not be dumb….omg im actually laughing

by ben on Dec 4, 2008 2:48 AM EST reply actions

be dumb wtf i cant say he is dumb wow

by ben on Dec 4, 2008 2:49 AM EST reply actions

maybe most of you wants this team to be own the drain… why insist on trading vince is some losing team? he is showing great leadership and sending him out is like cutting the Nets head off. Devin is a great player but he can’t do it by himself. If they are going to trade him, it better be a championship caliber team to have his talent not go to waste.

by buboi on Dec 4, 2008 3:19 AM EST reply actions

That Wizards loss was unacceptable, but hey guys, some of you’re overreacting, we are SIXTH in the east, i repeat S-I-X-T-H, nobody expected us to be that good by now, we have a young team and we are improving, you can’t ask Devin and Vince to be supermen every single night, they’re human beings and have the right to struggle one night.

Btw, so, as Dave D had a “hunch” everybody has gone crazy and is posting ridiculous trade ideas involving VC, wow. Vince is being a great leader and we’re exceeding expectations, despite some ugly and dissappointing losses. We’ll see what happens by February, but if we keep a nice record, I don’t see Rod & Kiki doing stupidities, we don’t need the cap space. If something happens, it would have to be a contending team who takes VC, it’s the only thing that makes sense, and we should get some real great young talent in return if a trade is gonna happen, and there aren’t many contending teams that could give us something that Dave D defined as a “young with potential to be a top5 in the league at his postition”.

by Andrés on Dec 4, 2008 11:58 AM EST reply actions

hey Tim

I am thousands of miles from NJ. I just want my alltime fave player(VC) to go to a contender before he leave. But if he’s content by being in Jersey, then I “applaud him”. I just want him to go to a place where his talent is appriecated. He has a 3 good years left.
