For Toronto Writer, "Enough is Enough"

The Toronto Sun's Frank Zicarelli thinks that Raptor fans should give it up. "With any divorce comes the expected ill feelings, but enough is enough," he writes. Carter may have left a bitter taste when he departed Toronto four years ago, but Jason Kidd did the same thing to the Nets. "When Kidd returns, he'll be cheered," Zicarelli notes. "When Carter returns to Toronto, he gets jeered...but Carter can flat-out play."

Yeah, Raptor fans have to move on. They’re only wasting their energy. Besides, what that article doesn’t mention is that Carter’s career has been downhill since his second season, and Toronto had him then. Back then, he was the next MJ, and last season he didn’t even make the Allstar team.
And isn’t it clear that Carter doesn’t like being the number 1 guy? He wants to compliment another star, which is why Harris is doing so well this year. In Toronto, the team lived and died with Carter. When you don’t want ALL the credit or blame, but you get it anyway, can you really blame the guy?!

The NBA promoted VC as the next MJ after the strike season of 1997-98…and the departure of Jordan. It was a deliberate marketing strategy and it was dumb.
One little discussed aspect of all this is that Carter who has missed 10 games in four years credits Tim Walsh with finding the treatments to keep him healthy, particularly the nagging achilles problem he had before he left Toronto.

Fans hold a grudge against Carter, in part because they’re jealous, privately pining for the days when he’d take over a game with his jump shot and his dribble drive.
Well said (author of this article)

kidd is going to be cheered? I’m not too sure about that.

I WONT BE BOOING BUT I SURE WONT BE CHEERING EITHER! KIDD LEFT A SOUR TASTE IN MY MOUTH WHEN LEAVING NJ & I HEARD FROM SOURCES THAT HE WAS EXTREMELY NASTY AND DEMANDING ABOUT GETTING OUT OF JERSEY, THEREFORE I’LL JUST SIT THERE & WATCH THE GAME, HOPING DEVIN RUNS CIRCLES AROUND HIM. :)

Kidd will be cheered. Get over it. Its gonna be awesome.
And who cares what your “sources” tell you. Do you write for the Post?
by Trenton on Dec 16, 2008 9:22 AM EST reply actions
Re Vince, I definitely think he feeds off the boos. I think Toronto should quit the booing and maybe Vince will not be the hero of the game. Re Kidd, I agree with Monica. I would not boo, but I definitely would not cheer. I just feel he gave up on his team. Yes, he had the right to move on, but he could have played the season out without quitting on his team. I always loved Kidd, but I lost respect for him after he pulled the migraine night.
by Joanne on Dec 16, 2008 9:26 AM EST reply actions
I couldn’t agree more. It’s pretty ridiculous that 4 years later, they still boo every time he touches the ball. Let’s not be like the Raptor fans, lets cheer Kidd during starting line-ups, but then cheer on the Nets during the game. I mean seriously, look at how much Kidd did for the Nets organization. Maybe he left on bad terms, but don’t erase all the great things he did. Regardless, you people act like it was a bad thing Kidd left and we got Devin Harris. I think it was the best thing to happen to this team.
by TrueNetsFan on Dec 16, 2008 9:47 AM EST reply actions
Kidd didnt give up. Even though his heart wasnt in it he was still putting up quality numbers. Its not like he took halfcourt shots or made turnovers on purpose. He played hard the whole time and made his teammates better the whole time he was in Jersey.
I mean come on. Jason Kidd alone is the reason the game will sell out on Friday. Whether people go to cheer him or to see him play. That shows what a huge part of the franchise he was. Give it up for the kidd.
by Trenton on Dec 16, 2008 10:25 AM EST reply actions
I agree, Kidd didn’t give up. Kidd will use his mouth but his feistyness fuels his game. He sure brought his stock high enough to land a quality young player like Harris. He won’t be booed, he’s 35 years old, he wants to win and it wasn’t gonna happen in NJ.
As for VC, the guy can flat out play like the author said. I love watching him play in Toronto, so much passion, much like a playoff game…..

@ Net Income
The marketing strategy you refer to,sort of began in the summer of 1999.It was also around the time when nba.com videos started to be a trend. The videos through the website were very much promoted with carter and ,in spite of the fact that every time the nba picks jordanaires is totally dumb, they made money using him as they are making now with lebron. The thing, that i loved though about those years, is that vc was not a slow process like lebron,of whom everybody expected to be the air to the throne from the first time he stepped to the court. He just crashed the scene. It was unexpected and much more powerful in emotions, but it ended almost just as swiftly as it began.

Monica and joanne are 100% correct.
Kidd was “extremely nasty and demanding” about getting traded to a team that might give him the contract extension he was looking for.
Thorn rejected kidd’s contract demands in november/december of last year … leading to the migraine incident and subsequent tanking of games by kidd.
Kidd continued accumulating points, rebounds & assists to keep his market value high, while simultaneously playing fake d, committing frequent turnovers (especially at the worst possible times) and being a very bad locker-room influence (see rj).
Unlike carter, kidd was smart enough to camouflage his tank-act by putting up impressive stats … which made it difficult for nba pundits and analysts to call him a quitter, like they called carter in toronto.
Make no mistake about it … kidd flat-out quit on the nets. Yeah, the nets quit on kidd by going low-budget (see mikki moore & eddie house departures). But 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
Kidd should have followed kevin garnett’s example in minnesota of how to professionally part ways with an organization. But then again, garnett is a far better person than kidd could ever dream of being.

@Net Income & papfankon, In those days Carter was the most liked player in the nba, leading all players in allstar votes so it was never dumb. Ill say it again. In his raptor days v.c played with a different ferocity and could not be stopped by anyone. The league made him its poster boy like LeBron and M.J before him. Problem with that is ,that he made that decision to graduate with his classmates telling the world that the nba is not the most important thing in the world. The league is better off selling Jordan crying for a championship rather than what Vince did even though i support him 100%. Want to add that Iverson made it to the finals after crying on national T.V when his 76ers got bounced in the conference finals. not good at making long stories short but i hope you get the point.

Does kidd mean caplocks? Either that or Kidd brings out the VC in you like Toronto does.
I’ll cheer him, don’t care what any of you guys say. If he were never to land in NJ, we’d be lucky to draw 8’000
by Weakside on Dec 16, 2008 1:20 PM EST reply actions
@Weakside, thats probaly true but the fact is that Kidd plays for the mavs now. Kidd has always and will continue to be a shady man. Kidd has a rare power of control which he had over the refs & nets organization that made him a great captain. If he doesnt have it working for him he is a complete no one. He is not the man in Dallas and has no power and is out there just doing his job like he did last season & at the end of the previous. Kidd is at his best when he’s driving to the lane with the option to pass(deadly) if he’s not doing that then its because he doent want to play hard. When was the last time you seen him play like that? and please don’t say he’s old.

This was a good article. And true. I can see why Raptor fans are having a hard time, now they have no one but Bosh and he doesn’t entertain the way did does. Must confess, had a HUGE crush on Cater back in the day. I sued to get magaizne from Canada to read them and everything. He was more popular than the mayor of Toronto (I have family up there too).
And I agree with Net Income. He was a marketing stratefy and it worked. But he wasn’t the first and won’t be the last. I remember Kwame Brown was supposed to be the next Jordan. A lot of players get hyped up and don’t live up to it. VC had injuries and plays nice in the sandbox. His personality will not allow him to be a Kobe, Lebron or MJ. He seems just fine with being Vince, everybody esle needs to be fine with it too!
About Kidd, I loved his game and was a huge fan. I don’t live in Jersey but I loved the 2000 Nets and beyond. Kidd didn’t handle his situation professionally (like KG) but most people aren’t passionate about ball like KG. They want money and power and recgonition. Kobe acted a butthole too, and AI was one behind the scenes as well. No GM in their right mind wants to trade their franchise player, especially if he’s productive. Most have to force a trade, or stay faithful and pray for one. I really don’t know any other player besides KG (franchise) that got his wish without acting an *!

imagine if kidd was on the team still. we would be horrible. he knew the team couldnt win anymore so why should he stay on the team if he wanted a title so badly. every player wants to win a title and his best chance was in dallas. people who boo him are just like the raptors fans just too sensitive. i understand if he didnt try his hardest but he was getting triple doubles almost every night. ima laugh if i hear boos at the game cuz ima be there clapping

Didn’t I say Vince was going to lead this team, and silence the doubters?
Raptors fan are starting to realize that it was freaking 4 years ago!?!
VC stuck it to raptor fans last month with his jaw dropping performance, and that he just can’t be stopped.
This writer knows he can play. He knows what he’s talking about, and Vince may not have become the next MJ, but he\s provided memories that make us love watching the NBA.
Check the Raptor fans off of VC’s silence the doubters list.
(even though they’ll constantly boo still)

@Zartan
Are you saying Kidd isn’t past his prime??? Kidd looks for his teammates, he rarely looks to score anymore because he isn’t the same player. Even when he gets into the paint(with the Mavs) he blows a lot of lay ups. It’s just not the way he plays anymore.
I’d say his “power of control” has something to do with him being one of the best point guards of all time. Also, taking Clippers East to respectability.
In terms of Refs, any star gets more respect from the refs.
I don’t mean to sound like an ahole Zartan, I just for the most part disagree.

Here’s a few more franchise players, in addition to kevin garnett, who persuaded management to trade them without faking migraine headaches, tanking games or wrecking an entire season like kidd did.
Ray Allen … traded from the sonics to the celtics.
Charles Barkley … traded from the sixers to the suns and later from the suns to the rockets.
Clyde Drexler … traded from the trailblazers to the rockets.
Buck Williams … traded from the nets to the trailblazers.
I could name more, but the point remains the same … all of these franchise players worked quietly behind the scenes to persuade management to trade them to more appealing teams and/or cities.
No work stoppages, temper tantrums or posturing in the media were necessary. Just clear & direct communications with management and a little bit of patience were all that was required.

I don’t think Kidd’s way out was anything wrong. He simply said, some time the wave ends . What is so terrible about that? He knew the direction, he knew it didn’t include him. He was brought in to win with the main pieces (kittles, van horn, jefferson, martin etc.) That didnt work, they traded everyone and gave him nothing to work with.
No tantrum, no work stoppage (until i hear it directly from kidd I won’t believe the media’s migraine story), nothing terrible said to the media about the team. And he didn’t tank any games!! If you think he did you better have something to back that statement up!!!! Get your facts straight and stop believing everything you read in the paper. If you call yourself a nets fan your arguments are disgusting.

I was about to say that I agree that Raptor fans should get over it but then I remembered about Mourning. I don’t think I can ever NOT boo that guy. maybe not to the extent the raptor fans do though. If anything, maybe raptor fans should cut it down to booing him during the introductions or when carter checks into the game but to do it every time he touches the ball is a little much after all these years.
by Tom on Dec 16, 2008 7:45 PM EST reply actions
Mourning is different. He came to win a championship OFF the Nets. The Nets supported his condition, donated money, and when the team was in decline he was public and inconsiderate to a team that took a chance on him. He was traded, continued to complain and latched onto the next winning team and rode their coattails. And when he was out of NJ he continued to run his mouth. Mourning will always be booed and its well deserved.
As for carter, hey canada, boo him all you want. NJ owns the Raptors when we play up there so I’m all for it.

The Raptors had their chance to stop Vince Carter from leaving, and they did almost nothing. That trade was done about four years ago, and one can never change the past. I know 76ers are not feeling so bad these days about the loss of Allen Iverson. As for Buck Williams, his career did not end on the Blazers in 1996, he spent two seasons with the Knicks until he finally retired in 1998, though his number is retired by the Nets. On a sidenote, I know some thought at first it was silly for the Bulls to trade a young power foward like Charles Oakley to the Knicks back in 1988 for an aging center like Bill Cartwright, but they wound up playing better after that trade.

this only means one thing, Toronto fans are a bunch of babies!
they love him so much that they give him sooo much attention, they boo him because everytime VC touches the ball he could take it to the rim!

@ Brooklynbob, thanks for mentioning some players that were classy during trades. But as I recall Ray Allen wasn’t asking to be traded. Maybe I ‘m wrong, but I could have sworn he said he was surprised he was traded. With Charles and Clyde, I think the feeling was mutual as both teams and players wanted to go in a new direction. I also don’t remember Barkley wanting to leave Philly, but I didn’t follow him until he was a Sun.
I think the difference is when a player wants to be traded and the franchise does not want to trade him. What is a player to do then? Force a trade or patiently pester for one. I honestly don’t recall VC acting an a-hole to get traded either. Rumors say after he asked for one in the summer of 04, he didn’t play as hard, but he had an achilles injury that carried into his first months with the Nets, as Net Income pointed out. Canada is like that crazy singer Jazmine “I busted the windows out your car” They are bitter and want to make VC pay for leaving them, lol.

KIDD’S WORK STOPPAGE: the migraine incident (only a koolaid drinking fool would believe that kidd actually had a migraine headache that prevented him from even attempting to play against the knicks, especially when he had no history of such migraines and especially since he supposedly acquired the migraine right after his contract demands were rejected by thorn (see below))
KIDD’S TEMPER TANTRUM: he said “f-you” to thorn and stormed out of the room after his contract demands were rejected (according to several published reports)
KIDD’S POSTURING IN THE MEDIA: “there’s no light at the end of the tunnel here” … “we have a glass jaw and no identity” … “i would love to play with lebron in cleveland” … in other words, “TRADE ME!!!”
KIDD’S TANKING OF GAMES: his skyrocketing turnovers (especially during 4th quarter crunch-time), fake defense and atrocious attitude & demeanor, resulting in the nets’ grossly underachieving win-loss record last season prior to the dallas trade
by brooklyn bob on Dec 17, 2008 3:11 PM EST reply actions
His Stoppage: Again, unless I hear it from him I won’t believe something soley because it is in a newspaper
Tantrum: Again, Thorn hasn’t said that happened nor has kid. Why should I believe “published reports” from those unattended?
Media: Who cares if he said those ambiguous things. He was right and he called it like he saw it. Lebron said he would love to play in Europe. They aren’t hanging him in LA.
Tanking of games: Specific examples please cause you are very general and your use of adjectives makes me disregard any credibility in your reply.
