Nets Lose to Pacers Thanks to Awful Second Half

The Nets were unable to build on Friday's win over the Pistons, traveling to Indiana and looking lost offensively in the second half on Saturday. They led by two at halftime, but scored just 17 points in the next 18 minutes, falling behind by double figures by the middle of the third and eventually losing by 18 . After shooting 21-42 in the first half, they shot 8-33 (24 percent) after the break. Vince Carter led all scorers with 31 points and Keyon Dooling, starting for Devin Harris, added 17, but Yi Jianlian shot 1-10 from the field and the Nets didn't get much from anyone else. They recorded just 10 assists for the game.

We will never win unless we have a secondary scorer…
Devin played great yesterday, hence a win
Devin did not play, no scoring Dooling had 17 points but made a lot of turnovers….
Bobby needs to be on the bench and Yi needs to wake up

No Harris and essentially no Yi means a blowout. VC could only carry us for one half. No real surprises here, but we have to do a better job on the defensive glass and defending the three.

That offense looks horrible with or without Harris. Its almost like shooting a jumpshot with 6 seconds left on the shot clock. Also, what’s the point of piling all of these draft picks if they’re not gonna see significant minutes. We might as well trade all the picks we have cuz they are not gonna get minutes anyway. Simmons, Hassel, Ager, sux. I’ll give Najera a pass for now.

dear sweet jesus. what a horrible game
*Devin was out which was a bad start. no use in putting him out there when we need him for the tomorrows and not the near todays. hope he gets healthy quick and there is no way he should play until he is 100%. be out 2 weeks i dont care. it means we will lose easier, but we need him at full strength
*VC tried his best. great first half, struggled in the second just like the team. as vince goes, we go and vince wasnt goin in the 3rd and start of 4th.
*Dooling scored great, but boy the ball movement was horrible. i dont know how many times there was a passing lane open where the ball should have been delivered but was never delivered. i guess im still used to seeing kidd make the pass with ease. dooling can score, but he doesnt see the floor well. made devin look good tonight
*Boone – for some reason we decided once again to go AWAY from the pick-n-rolls with boone and vince. if we dont use it then boone cant make that much of an impact offensively. foster beat him out for boards. Oh and please hit some free throws!
*Simmons can gtfo of the starting unit as far as i am concerned. i thought our ‘catch the ball on the sideline and step out’ player went to europe (boki). he turns the ball over, misses jumpers and isnt that good on the defensive end imo.
*Yi needs to learn how to impact a game when he cannot buy a bucket. missed some wide open shots and even those that were contested being a 7footer you know it wont be blocked yet just couldnt buy a bucket. i wouldnt mind a night like this because he got 11 boards, but hes played like this too much this year. its all about learning
*Lopez not another good game. got some points, but hasnt improved game to game. he needs to fine a reliable move to get some points rather consistently and build off that. once again fouls hurt him
*Najera bring great energy and is a smart player, but dear god his shot is off. he missed pretty much everything and a lot of time so ill give him a pass but hes gotta hit those open shots like he can.
*Hayes should be in the starting lineup imo. he hits his shots more consistently, skys up for rebounds and i think he plays good D. he hasnt exploded points-wise like the game in washington, but he runs and comes off screens well that i think if he plays with the first unit and vince he will get more shots and i feel he would delivery more than simmons. plus hayes is active and moves around to get a shot while simmons pitches a tent in the corner then steps out
*Swat sighting! comes in, blocks a shot, misses a shot pretty much in garbage time. he didnt hurt himself in the time he played. still really nothing to talk about with him
our first back-2-back and it showed. we really have only played 2 very good quarters out of the last 8 quarters. those 2 quarters being the 3rd and 4th of the pistons game.
playing zone killed us. they kept hitting 3’s, yet it really didnt matter because we didnt play D period. we cant have our bigs doing basically nothing. we got out hustled, out coached, out played. we had a good chance to win this game, but once again we suck it up in the 3rd Q and you cant expect to always come back after playing like crap in the 3rd Q 9 games outta 10, especially on the road

Yi Van Horn was awful, at least Keith gave us points night in night out. This guy looks like he just doesn’t care. He needs K Mart in his face since Frank can’t get the job done….I’m concerned, cause you can’t teach fire!

no wonder the nets couldnt score in the secound half when frank insisted to take the balkl away from vince and keep it in doolings hands for the first 6 minutes, and thats where the game went south. then frank decided to put his all nba scrub team outhere for most of the game. how are they gonna scroe, with hassell, nejara, boone, vc and dooling on the floor together. you got 3 guys who cant score for a lick, and dooling is the worst pg ive ever seen in my life. marcus is tons bette than him running the point. and whoever said dooling is a good defensive player. thats what some reporters dont get, like dave d and iazzoone, defense is not a skill its a mindset, and the only person who can instill this mindset is thee coach. the nets have capable athletic defenders who can defend, but frank has to iionstil the fundementals of defense abd the mindset to go along with it.
frank couldnt hold up his itch of going strctily veterans with his rotation. right now the only youngsters playing are lopez and yi. lopez should start, he wont get better unless he gets lots of PT and unless he plays with the first unit. i mean any big could of got those easy pts boone got agasint the psitons. they were all wide open looks off pick n rolls, or off droves where vc or harris would suck the whole frontline and leave wide open for the putback. he cant shoot and doesnt have an offensive game to speak off, and most importantly he gets creamed on the boards by real centers. frank tried to save face in the 4th, by putting yi back and putting sean. im sure he probably remembered wiining with a purpose speech kiki gave him, and thought that games like this would make him lose his job faster than he willa ctually lose it. he doesnt play youngsters, and isnt commited to them. whats the point of playing all these usless veterans, who arnt even that good, over youngsters with potential, if youre not even gonna make the playoffs, and even if they do, they aint going anywhere past the firt round, so wheres the purpose. now since nejara has come one and officially has gone 0for 15, anderson and sean cant play. and now wetre seeing lopez’ minutes get smaller and smaller everygame, foul trouble or not. and goodness dooling drives me nuts. first off this offense has no ball movement whatsoever, add to that dooling who cant run the point, and is just a energy 10 minute guy off the bench for any team. no wonder no team wnated him unless for the vet minimum. and we gave up marcus who is soo much better offensively, and has upside, and isnt that far off defensively, since dooling hasnt played any defense since being a net.
those type of decisions frank is making, by putting guys who cant score all together on the floor, while he can make better decisions, will cost him. this is a rebuilding team, its not the redemption team for old vets who are career journeymen. nejara shouldnt be playing ahead of anderson and swat, period. than frank also puts hassell and simmons whos abslutely usless, at the 4 instead of those kids. and the rookies and youngsters will probably play better than those uys. anderson is a beter scorer than all these guys, and sean is a better dfender than all of them. but of course frank has no time developing them and giving them PT. this aint a rebuilding team as long frank coaches them, it will be a redemption team for a bunch of veteran losers who have been career journeymen. well at leats the bright side is that with the way he’s coaching, hell get fired andthe nets will finally get a real head coach.

I come back from practice, and I see the Nets lost by 18. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, then I watched the recording. I could not believe what I was seeing…ugh that was terrible. I skipped alot of parts but I’ll try to evaluate as much as I can.
Devin Harris-really felt the emptiness without Harris, hope his injuries not to serious and that he’ll play soon, but if he’s still hurting, it’s okay,I just want him back 100%
Vince Carter-I expected Vince to have a good game, but 31 points? I watched the whole first half, V.C did not dissapoint. Unfortunately he was our only offensive threat.(real offensive threat) He won’t be able to pull a 81 point game like Kobe, but that would have been the only way we win this game.
Keyon Dooling-Alright alright you can score! I know that already! just stop with the turnovers! It was horrible, he’s got to play like a point guard!! V.C was more of a point, than him. BUt 17 points, not bad.
Bobby Simmons-no no no no. Simmons i’m just dissapointed in you. HOw the heck are you suppose to be our 3rd leading scorer!?!? Just come off the bench if were looking for some 3s, and when were desperate.
Josh Boone-Since they weren’t really running the pick and rolls play so he didn’t really get a rythm going. He’s got to stay consistenet and box out. Jeff foster was killing him. And that air ball from the free throw line? what were you working on all summer Boone?????!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Brook Lopez-Is he hitting a really early rookie wall or is he just not getting enough time?He got some rebounds, made a few shots, and got a block,he need some more time to understand the feel of the game. He’s got to play alot smarter.
Eduardo Najera-3 pointers is not in this guys vocabulary. He’s a great defender and he knows what he’s doing, but either he works on his jumpshot, or it’s like 4 on 5 when there playing in offense.
Swat-is playing! whoo hoo….in garbage time, I hope Swat will be able to grow, wheter hear in New Jersey, or wherever he is. He’s got too much potential not to succeed.
Hassell-he suprise me early with some good jumpshots, and some good defense, but then he was lost to me. I couldn’t notice anything else from this guy.
Hayes-this guy is a great all around player. He can make shots, play good D, and can rebound. Why can’t Frank get trhough his thick head to put him over Simmons. If SImmons isn’t producing by the all-star break, I expect Hayes to be our starting 3.
I hated it when we were playing in a zone. That just led them to take those 3 and make them. We had no offensive threat other than Carter, and we were embarrassed. I’m sad…Oh well it’s a learning experience, let’s hope we can do better against the Heat.
by R.M on Nov 8, 2008 11:15 PM EST reply actions
I agree we are rebuilding and we should give hard minutes to young guys that have potential…ok, Swat isn’t producing, but he has superpotential and need to play to get better, he’s a defender, but he can intimidate with the big slams on offense, but what I most don’t understand, is why Anderson isn’t playing, he has been a good scorer in the minutes he have played, same thing with Lopez, he’s way better than Boone (he only can score on pick and roll, he can’t shoot)
Frank, needs to see that and stop playing that Hassel and Ager over the rookies and putting that stupid lineup on the floor with simmons or hassel at 4, it never worked, but he insists!
I always liked and defended Frank, but I’m hanging my mind, is he blind, forever?
by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Nov 8, 2008 11:25 PM EST reply actions
Mina, you are so cool.
Damn, we really need Devin Harris, without him, this is one man team.
by jarkid on Nov 8, 2008 11:28 PM EST reply actions
But for now isn’t good for the team to fire the coach, but if he insists being obstinated, and keep losing fire him, what hell I’m freaking out with this guy!
He says that are trying the best combos on the floor, but he does the same s*** every game, even when we win…
by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Nov 8, 2008 11:36 PM EST reply actions
we need to stop playing the zone and play man to man. Im tired of seeing players open and then having like 2 seconds to shoot. The zone is killing us…and the team has to play man to man. Forget about helping out on defense..players must learn to defend there man.
Oh and we need to play anderson…he is capable of playing better than yi “butterfingers” jianlian.
by Andy on Nov 9, 2008 12:05 AM EST reply actions
We need consistency more than anything. So far, Vince Carter is the only one on our team that you know what you’re gonna get night in and night out.
Yi and Boone have got the talent, they just need to string it all together in consecutive games. One game Yi’s stopping and shooting like Dirk, the next he’s invisible. Boone’s just dependent on finishing open looks so it’s a bit more understandable on why he’s inconsistent.
by muwu on Nov 9, 2008 12:24 AM EST reply actions
the back-up guys should step up. everyone should step up. it would be difficult for any team to get a win if only 2 players score in double digit. it seems that the coach is not doing his job, the have the lead in halftime but they blew it. give frank a long vacation.
by buboi on Nov 9, 2008 12:36 AM EST reply actions
what kind of coach will play zone on a team whose main offense is to shoot threes. TJ ford is not a good shooter, so just dare him to shoot so he wont have to break the defense down for those open looks.
by jesse on Nov 9, 2008 12:38 AM EST reply actions
I had a bad game (again)… but I will learn from this. I have improved my rebounding skills, and now will focus more on how can I score if I hit a slump like tonight.
Coach is just trying things out there. He has to trust kids who can give energy. What the hell happened to Brook’s post game? KD is a different PG type. Coach should also learn from this game — that his players have different strengths and that he should use them on case-to-case basis. He used Ed, Trenton, Josh, VC and KD, but that is not a good combo for half-court offense — they have no jumpshot abilities. These guys are more fit for a quick game where they should get to the paint and not waste 18secs for a play to start.

Yi and Najera combined 34 minutes 14 FG attempts and 2 points. Anderson 1:50 minutes 0 FG attempts and 2 points. What is wrong with Frank! So much for developing the rookies. The longer the no shooters were in the harder it got for Carter to score.

Ryan Anderson is a stud, I don’t believe that Frank is starting not to play him, it’s a big mistake.

Najera is the Boki of 09, with wild wide open, and brick it.
What a shame, Frank has to play Ryan Anderson, or he has to go with his big supporter Sean Carter.

Yet another game where Sean is not used(except garbage time), yet doesnt look any worse than Najera… Give Sean the damn minutes! At least he can block shots, protect the rim and make it harder for the other team.

by 732_Franchise on Nov 9, 2008 8:24 AM EST reply actions
Yi looks lost and out of gas. Can’t a trainer do something about him. Simmons? Once he miss his first 2 shots should sit down for the rest of the game. Whatever happens to Ryan Anderson? What kind of cockamammie coaching decision is that? Insisting to leave Yi in, terrible all throughout and not putting Anderson in. Frank must have had a brain lock.
by edd on Nov 9, 2008 9:18 AM EST reply actions
The only question is how much losing will Thorn take before he finds the need to make a coaching change. Yi is talking about improving his shot to make himself better but his man shot 6 for 11 (best on the team) and he had no blocked shots. He can’t go down low because he is weak and is left with outside (low percentage) shots. Unless he gets stronger and more agressive on D he’s a 3 and would be an allstar at the SF. So Frank ruins his development. Lopez played 15 min. Swat played 7 with 2 blocks. These guys should play 30 min each minimum. Two more guys Frank is ruining. Not playing guys he should and playing guys in the wrong position (especially in the front court) has always been Frank’s problem, always will and just kills the team. It suprises me when Thorn runs the team with a certain philosophy and the coach doesn’t follow it and Thorn allows it to continue. Maybe its to early for Thorn to see it won’t work the way Frank coaches or he does see it won’t work and is just giving Frank a chance. Who will make a change first Frank or Thorn?
by libigman on Nov 9, 2008 9:20 AM EST reply actions
Ok I have been on the fence over Frank for a long time, but I have to say now he is making huge mistakes. We will lose VC if Frank keeps using the rotation logic he has now. VC is willing to stay around and play hard because he is interested in helping these young players bring out the talent they have and trying to get somewhere with them. He is not interested in playing with Trenton Hassel and Ager when Ryan Anderson is on the bench. Swat too. As much as I doubt Swats potential at this point, why WHY play clearly limited veteran players and a bust to try to win a game in an obvious losing season when our priority should be to train our excelent young players. Ryan Anderson should have had huge minutes, especially with Yi playing so badly. Swift should have been playing, ESPECIALLY with with Yi playing badly. He is a proven scorer, and our problem was scoring. I just, ughhh, Hassel and Ager playing when there are more talented players struggling for playing time on the bench. I know we lacked guards, but we also lacked forwards with Yi having an off night, and why not play more forwards and play to out strengths?
How can you expect VC to stay this season when he exhausts himself to put up 30 point games and Frank doesnt even play Ryan Anderson or Swat?
by luca on Nov 9, 2008 9:27 AM EST reply actions
To think WE could have drafted Granger but we took Antoine Wright instead. Ryan Anderson will be this year’s rookie casualty at the hands of Coach Know Nothing. The reason Frank has a job is they are too cheap to make a change. Let’s remember though—‘Lawrence works hard. He prepares a lot. It’s not the coach’s fault’. Please get a real coach.

Lo Frank is an atrocious NBA head coach, most of us have known that for 4 years. Kidd was the coach of the team and now he is left to his own devices, which with this putrid roster will leave us looking at just enough wins to prevent us from getting one of the top lottery picks. Sad and pathetic what has happened since a certain owner bought the team.
by Isaac on Nov 9, 2008 11:07 AM EST reply actions
Agreed! You all act as if Ryan Anderson is some basketball god. He’s a rookie whose jump shot isn’t falling. Give him some time, his time will come. I can’t believe how crazy most of you are.
by Tom on Nov 9, 2008 12:08 PM EST reply actions
also, we seriosuly need al harrington, he would bring this team to higher level entirely, by giving us another legit scoring threat, a consistent one. no one else should be out competing us for him because we have so many draft picks to trade, and we dont need them really, only one or two, because we already have a roster full of promising young players, we dont need to stunt anyone elses development by taking minutes away from them.
why is our team not seriously pursuing him when we can easily just overpay for him with a bunch of daft picks which we DONT NEED?
by luca on Nov 9, 2008 12:20 PM EST reply actions
Like I have said before – the team needs a 3. Simmons can’t cut it. Hayes is a backup 3. Give Anderson a START. BUILD his confidence. Otherwise make a move and get one.
With regard to the 4 – Yi is a model of inconsistency. His shot selection is poor. He needs to calm down and take his time.
And in the 5 – Boone can’t shoot – period. Air ball foul shot? cmon. Until the guy learns to shoot – develop Lopez.
And Dooling needs to stop wasting 10 seconds of each possession dribbling around in circles. By the time someone takes a shot – its at the buzzer.
And Frank should not play Hassel or Ager. And should give limited minutes to Najera and Hayes. The future is with the youth.
In fairness to Frank – nobody could win with this roster. Nobody. He’s afraid for his job which is why he won’t just develop the rookies. He needs to win or he’s out.
by halwas on Nov 9, 2008 1:28 PM EST reply actions
mina said it BEST. Frank the freak, took the ball out of VC’s hand and gave it to Doo-long for 6 straight minutes. VC should’ve had the ball the whole time he was in there. It’s ironic how when we had Kidd, VC would take most of the plays even from Kidd down the stretch. I know we can only ride VC for so long but atleast let us WIN or LOSE with him. I don’t want to see Hayes, Namajar(whatever) shooting airballs down the stretch.
by Runnin' on Nov 9, 2008 3:59 PM EST reply actions
LET ME ADD, that this game had a “W” written all on it. If Frank would’ve told VC to go for the KILL then we would be up 3-2 instead of down 2-3. We had better take advantage of every game cuz, my dear, the W’s will hard to come by especially if only legit superstar on your rostrum.
