Nets Escape Sacramento With a Win

This was the one game the Nets really needed to win on their trip and they got it ... barely. The Nets led by as many as 17 points early in the third quarter, but for the second straight night, that's when they started to lose their grip on the game. Sacramento came all the way back and was up six with 34 seconds to go, but the Nets pulled another one out of their hat. John Salmons missed two of his four free throws down the stretch while Devin Harris, who had struggled most of the night, scored on a drive and then hit a three to tie the game with 7.1 seconds to go. The Nets then got a stop to send the game to overtime. Vince Carter had to leave the game in OT with a leg cramp, but Harris gave the Nets a one-point lead with a jumper with 12 seconds to go. Another stop and a Jarvis Hayes free throw later, the Nets came away with the win. Carter led the Nets with 25 points, while Brook Lopez added 20 points, eight boards and three blocks. Harris finished with 18 points and seven assists and Keyon Dooling scored 17 points, including two huge threes in overtime.

Frank outcoached the sacramento coach late in the 4th and in OT.
Frank has been outstanding in those situations.

I knw he hit a couple of big shots, but Dooling frustrates me. It feels like he shoots too much and ball hogs.

by ronnie on Nov 27, 2008 1:16 AM EST reply actions

yi is 24 and a bust. He is not learning anything. Lopez is more consistent than him. Ryan is more consistent than him! Again he should bench because we have our big 3 in brooks,Harris, and carter. He is useless with the starters and clueless with them. WE need some shot blocker and defense. yi 2 min with 3 fouls! two year in the nba and still having foul trouble, HIgh IQ my butt.

by lol on Nov 27, 2008 1:18 AM EST reply actions

Please Please let Vince’s injury be minor, it’s suppose to be thanksgiving for crying out loud!?!?!?!

Honestly, Harris got hot at the right time, DOoling made some big shots, so did Hayes, and Simmons played great defense at the end.

Vince Carter was the one who was getting us the points in 4th quarter when we really needed it. Please God don’t let his injury be serious.

we haven’t won there since 1997. It was a very very ugly game.

Harris played great in the end, and made the big shots.

Dooling stepped it up with Vince out and that’s what got us the win.

Bobby Simmons actually played good defense in the end for us to win.

Yi Jianlian was okay early, but too many silly fouls or turnovers, was just too much for him.

Brook Lopez played great as well. He was our main offensive threat, and he produced. He is a real force down low.

Sean had silly fouls as usual, but had some nice blocks.

Anderson played great for his hometown, making 3s when needed, and looked good.

Did you guys notice that Swift was dressed up?

PLEASE LET THE INJURY BE MINOR!!!!

good win Nets. good win.

by R.M on Nov 27, 2008 1:19 AM EST reply actions

What the hell are the coaches doing in the locker room? Playing with trading cards or do they dress up and style their barbies? Can`t believe we nearly gave up a 17 point lead! What a heartbreaker.

Hopefully Vince is ok?!

Dooling was clutch tonight. Yes, he can do better in terms of moving the ball faster, but at least he’s playing some good defense.

Yi, Bobby, and Ryan need to learn how to play better defense. The nets would not be in the situation they were in if they did not committ silly fouls.

Jarvis Hayes, being a more experienced player needs to be in the lineup at the end of games, instead of Yi.

But i guess overall, a good win. We needed it after a poor performance in LA.

Hope Vince will be back with the team soon.

by Sam on Nov 27, 2008 1:21 AM EST reply actions

another good win. brook is the man early and Devin and Keyon were solid late. Good win and now a successful trip. Playing with house money. Maybe we can get one in Utah. Frank was good late too. I liked the 3 guard lineup

im just shocked we won this game. we did not deserve to win this we just got lucky. I dont get how we lose a 17 point lead like that it is just ridiculous and they missed mad free throws. call this a luck win

by ben on Nov 27, 2008 1:23 AM EST reply actions

Dude its not an injury- he just got a muscle cramp. The more muscle you have especially fast twitch fibres (For explosive movements) the more these cramps hurt. Thats why it always kills a guy like him and everyone is like its like he got shot. For those people that know how a calve cramp feels like- a hamstring one is much worse and more rare. If it was even like an ankle sprain Vince would have battled it out. For something like this it could take 10-15 minutes.

by Anonymousjeet on Nov 27, 2008 1:23 AM EST reply actions

why are you saying vince get better. ITS A CRAMP FOR CRYING OUT LOUD not a injury like that. he had that his 1st game with the nets remember jesus

by ben on Nov 27, 2008 1:25 AM EST reply actions

@ Anonymousjeet

I’m a little overreacting and your right, it’s just a muscle cramp. but imagine the Nets without Vince Carter. They’d almost be as bad as the Oklahomah City Thunder.

Thankfully there’s alot of time to rest before the next game, so hope Vince’ll be fine.

by R.M on Nov 27, 2008 1:27 AM EST reply actions

How do you guys know it is indeed just a cramp? I hope it is too…but it’s too early to tell isn’t it? More likely to find out tomorrow sometime.

by Greg on Nov 27, 2008 1:31 AM EST reply actions

@ Ben

I actually do think we deserve to win this game.

Even though we let go of a 17 point lead, the Kings had MULTIPLE oppurtunities to close out this game, but they couldn’t convert.

Brook Lopez and Keyon Doolings hard work should not be called lucky.

by R.M on Nov 27, 2008 1:31 AM EST reply actions

A great win in an ugly game.
Harris stuck until he hit the game-tying shot, and then that got him going. Dooling was picking up the slack tonight. Still, Simmons really sucked. We don’t put him there to make one or two defensive plays every 40 minuets. He’s getting his shots blocked and almost turning the ball over in OT. Almost wanted to hit my TV.

by croc on Nov 27, 2008 1:33 AM EST reply actions

I do not know how they keep pulling these comebacks of 7-10 points in the final minute out of their * so far this season but keep it up.

I know it was an ugly win but a win is a win. Down the road you are not going to look back at the Kings game and say, well that win should not count because they blew a lead and somehow rallied. I will take it.

I hope it was just a cramp as they are saying. Get well Vince.

I love the cltuch shooting of Dooling. We never have anyone like him who can hit 3s in the clutch.

I do not think that the Nets teams of the past would make these incredible comeback like the Nets do now. They fight and do not give up at all.

Yi needs to be deported. I would bench him and never let him play after that horrendous shot in the 4th when the game was tied before Miller hit the 3 from the top of the key. He is a *, he is soft, and he cannot defend. Get rid of him!!! Play Ryan, Jarvis, et al instead!!!!

Prediction….Nets beat the Jazz and finish trip 2-2. I just have a feeling. That is if Vince is healthy and plays.

The Knicks and 76ers are 7-8 and the Raptors I believe are at .500. We are right with those teams right now and we are “rebuilidng”. I will take that so far.

Go Nets!!

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!!

whoever is saying dooling didint play well or is a ball hog is dumb as hell without him we lose this game easily, so stop complaining, instead complain about somebody like bobby simmons whos just awful, i mean thats doolings game he had 17 points, a couple clutch 3s and had some nice takes to the basket, as dennis green would say " he is who we thoght he is!"- not to mentio n hes the only guy who plays defense

We should have won comfortably not in OT. We didn’t play with energy and let Kings back into the game. We are lucky we won the game. Too many mistakes from Kings especially from Miller and Jackson.

We better play a high energy game against Jazz or will be killed like at Lakers. Harris needs to take control of the game early. He is missing in the beginning of games in last two games.

by Tony on Nov 27, 2008 1:56 AM EST reply actions

We need Captain Carter back to at least win one of the next two.

by croc on Nov 27, 2008 1:59 AM EST reply actions

You guys need to be more patient with the young bigs.
Lopez is the only one making big strides, and becomes the only consistent big.
Besides Lopez, guys like Boone, Yi, and Ryan Anderson all had good and bad nights. We got these guys as investment. They’re all like 22-23 year olds. I’m more than happy to see just one of them having a good night.
Yi had a good night against the Lakers, so I’m going to give him a break. Anderson was 1-8 against the Lakers and was helpless defensively, but he bounced back tonight. Let these guys grow and don’t overreact.

by WTF? on Nov 27, 2008 4:49 AM EST reply actions

yeah, don’t over react Yi has made 21 years old past october, Lopez has 20 years (I really don’t remember in the past few years of a Bigman with only 20 years, playing and putting numbers like that, and Anderson has 20 years to, so relax and let them develop, big guys take some time to develop properly, because they’re height was increasing until entering in NBA, so they need to adapt!
Harris really will got his superstar status and probably All-Star, he’s being so damn clutch!
We can’t let loose a lead like that, but that comes with time and consistency that we are getting! But these wins, are THE wins that gives an extra boost of confidence!

I’m counting on winning one of the next two games to maintain the .500, and then start building some momentum and nice record!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Nov 27, 2008 5:45 AM EST reply actions

At the end of the season I think we will be fighting for the 7 and 8 spot in the Conference, along with Sixers, Bulls, Pacers and Milwakee, the others six spots and think will be granted by Celtis, Cavs, Pistons, Magic, Raptors and Hawks!

by Pedro Alves (Portugal) on Nov 27, 2008 5:50 AM EST reply actions

But probably the Sixers will get the pace and reserve their place in one of first seven spots, and that leave us along with Bulls, Pacers and Bucks battling for the 8 spot!

I blame Frank for this game,

he benched Ryan Anderson and played poor Yi down the stretch, and if Harris hadn’t saved this team, we are already done.

Frank really didn’t outcoach the SAC’s coach.

by jarkid on Nov 27, 2008 6:06 AM EST reply actions

but the way, we gave up 18 points lead easily in like 3 minutes.

by jarkid on Nov 27, 2008 6:09 AM EST reply actions

@jarkid

Frank benched Ryan because he was in foul trouble and i think he knows he would need his threes at the end of the game.
It was also very risky to play this small lineup with Hayes, Simmons, Harris and dooling, but luckily it worked.

by German Nets Fan on Nov 27, 2008 7:31 AM EST reply actions

stop hating on Yi, the guy’s pretty good he just needs more consistency.

by dominic on Nov 27, 2008 9:02 AM EST reply actions

As long as Frank goes with Yi and Anderson at the 4 over Swat we are weak on defense. Not to mention Yi is shooting under 40% for the year which is his strength. However, with Lopez developing we might be a playoff, 40+ win team and thats better than most people expected. When Boone comes back and Swat at the 4, we could do some serious damage. With Thorn providing enough talent any coach could win even Frank.

by libigman on Nov 27, 2008 9:05 AM EST reply actions

i don’t care that we won; actually proud that they won a game that they were supposed to, however the nets have a habit to mess up in the second half. The nets need to realize the second half matters more than the first. Basketball has four quarters of play not just two.

by Weakside on Nov 27, 2008 9:41 AM EST reply actions

Saw the first half live, and then crashed. My videotape ran out with 10 seconds left in OT after the Nets took the lead. What a relief to see that we pulled this one out. Lots of Net performances can be justly criticized in this ugly game, but let’s take the W and move on. We could have easily fallen apart after they made their run but hung in there. Nice growth after the second half in LA.

I was impressed by the Kings young big men—Hawes is a player, and while Thompson didn’t do as well last night, he is much more fluid than advertised. You gotta think that Miller is available, not that we need him at this point. Teams like the Bulls, Bobcats, and the Heat should be all over that.

by jabez on Nov 27, 2008 9:56 AM EST reply actions

The Nets are 7-7 and good for 6th place and the 5th and 4th placers are the Hawks and the Pistons, respectively, teams that the Nets had beaten.

All wins are good wins! I was glad to see Ryan perform in front of his home crowd. Eight rebounds in 18 minutes was great and 3 for 4 from downtown, his stroke looks like it’s back.

i am really angry with the nba right now…how is the carter behind the back move not even in the top ten???i am getting tired watching commercials about wade and blocks as haier play of day by lebron…i am sure, that if lewis made the block and lebron the buzzer beater against philadelphia, it would be number one.I am not just hating by the way,i believe lebron is the best but, he is all force, power, jump no special technique…he is not michael jordan, someday he might be.Jordan earned the spotlight, crashing the nba.Lebron is the protegee of the nba ,from the first moment that HAPPENED to turn to the best player today and i give him full credit for that.Nonetheless i am tired of the prejudice and i had to let it out…

by papfankon on Nov 27, 2008 10:41 AM EST reply actions

They got hot and Salmon was very efficient. At the same time harris, Sean and Yi games are horrible.
Their bigs like Miller and Moore outsmart our bigs specially Yi and Sean.
Carter was not playing well too. It was anderson and Brooks who keep us fighting.
Well what’s important is at the end NETS played good enough to win and SAC misses some free throws. We just got lucky Harris three points went in. Our first half is good. It’s always the third quarter. And I am not going to blame the players, its the coaches, almost every game we underperform every third quarter. I guess Frank should stop fielding Yi on third quarter specially if he gets into foul trouble. He is the weakest link on defense and when he gets into foul trouble his defense is nowhere. He needs to put dooling or Sean as energy guy there. It looks like a lot of teams we met already made the proper adjustment. What is more important you outcoached them before fourth specially on the third quarter.

by JuliusIrving on Nov 27, 2008 11:02 AM EST reply actions

Keep Frank, yo!

Hollah!

by Sean Carter on Nov 27, 2008 11:13 AM EST reply actions

This was a team win.
You can’t have all 10 players in the rotation playing stellar every night.
Harris got credits for last-min clutch plays, but if it wasn’t the other players stepping up to keep us close enough, there wouldn’t be a chance for Harris to make up for his earlier mistakes. Carter wasn’t stellar, but he produced what we expected of him with 25 pts. Not to mention he cramped up going after a teammate’s miss basket.

One thing I don’t get is how at the beginning of the game they tried to post up Simmons. I don’t care who’s guarding him. You “NEVER” isolate Simmons—that’s horrible coaching decision—he’s a role player who at best will knock down open shots. Why the heck do you risk a TO by asking him to do something he’s not capable to?

by croc on Nov 27, 2008 11:14 AM EST reply actions

Andeson moves his feet, set picks and move to open spots on the floor. He is on par with V.C when it comes to scoring.

For all the Frank lovers, the jazz game will be won or lost by Frank. If he can put together a win i think guys should leave him alone till he does something dunb.

by Zartan on Nov 27, 2008 12:31 PM EST reply actions

@ Zartan
How is it going to be a win or loss by Frank? He’s up against a 1,000-win coach.

Great finish. We won the game everyone expected us to win. And about Carter’s injury, how can it be a muscle cramp? He was carried off the court! Someone better tell him to keep stretching throughout the game.

by kevin on Nov 27, 2008 12:58 PM EST reply actions

VC shot 50% from the floor and Anderson 75% from three, I’m sorry but that’s stellar to me. I’m more interested in results than flash, but that’s just me.
Although I didn’t see the game it sounds like every contributed. Looking at the box score Yi didn’t do much. He does need to get an aggressive menatality like Mr. DB says. I do think some of it is culture, I think Yao had to get over it too. In a few years he’ll be fine. But until then I think Ryan should start. That actually may be the fuel Yi needs to work harder at reclaiming what’s his. He’d be good at the three too…I wouldn’t mind seeing Simmons off the bench as a defensive specialist. I think thus far he’s only had 1 good offensive night.

Thanks for the muscle cramp info. I alwasy wondered why he had raggedy hamstrings, lol. I pulled mine alot too and I learned that lifing heavy (squats) aren’t good for basketball running. It tightens the hammys, I always pulled mine sprinting in practice. I didn’t know fast twitch muscles cause cramps, or spasms.

by KAYBEE on Nov 27, 2008 1:07 PM EST reply actions

Kevin,

It sounds like it was a dehydration related cramp. YES showed VC afterward gulping Gatorade. I have never experienced one, but I am told that that type of cramp will totally immobilize you. He would not have been able to walk without assistance.

Lopez and Yi with Boone , Anderson, Swift, and Swat off the bench.

Harris is maturing to be a leader and a superstar. But what is enjoyable to watch is the play of Brook Lopez. I hope he does not hit the rookie-wall at the middle of the season. If he keeps this up, he can be a contender for rookie of the year. Thorn have this year good free agent aquisition in Hayes and Dooling. They are both clutch player together with Harris and Carter. Looking good so far.
