Raptor Bloggers Hammer Mitchell, Praise Frank

It's a given that Lawrence Frank outcoached Sam Mitchell in the 2007 playoffs. After Friday night, Toronto bloggers are hammering Mitchell and praising Lawrence Frank. "Frank once again owns Sam", writes one. "Smitch tea-bagged by Frank", writes another, adding a graphic to emphasize the point. Even Doug Smith, Toronto's respected hoops writer admits, "it wasn't one of the coach's greatest moments".

lol even Raptor fans were even commenting about wanting to trade Frank for Mitchell. lol

But I got to hand it to Frank, he can make the big plays down the stretch, and I hope that even Frank can silence the doubters. lol

If Frank can start making some logical decisions like playing the young guys like Swat and and Anderson over the veterans like Hassel and Najera (which to his credit he has done recently), I really don’t have any complaints against Frank.

Frank did a fantastic job, the TSN Toronto announcers couldn’t stop raving about him, the entire broadcast. It actually got annoying!

Keep Frank!

Holla!

if u watched the game last night frank really is a great coach never gave up like some coaches would do even when we were down by 7 keep frank

my only issue all along with frank was him not playing a few guys. I guess when I think about it, that’s not really a huge complaint when you look at other coaches in the league.

by Tim on Nov 22, 2008 4:04 PM EST reply actions

I like Najera, I just don’t like him shooting 3’s.

What exactly great has Lawrence Frank done ?, I’m not going to crazy about this but it just shows how this team is underachieving, they should be better. Point is Brook Lopez beat out Boone for many weeks and was left on the bench, a team w/ Vince Carter is still a dangerous team and Frank has been getting saved by Devin Harris if anything. You look at players like Ryan Anderson and CDR and Brook Lopez the credit should go to Thorn/Kiki, Frank hasn’t used Sean Williams the right way this season, he put Simmons over legit offensive options how many times this season and who can forget wasting out Boone as a starter when he should have been riding the bench. I’m sorry I don’t a great coach, I see an under average coach it’s said because legit coachs like a PJ Carlisimo & Mike Brown has never had a talented team but find themselves questioned more times than not while a Frank can underachieve for how many years now ?…. and counting.

Yes I know there are spelling errors in that post. Kind of multi-tasking right now.

I don’t see a great coach *
it’s sad *

Carlesimo for some reason likes to make racial slurs, then wonder why he gets choked. The Nets can lay off him…

Lawrence Frank is an underrated coach. Love the guy. While Sam Mitchell couldn’t get us (I live in Toronto, Raptors fan) to inbound the ball..TWICE, Frank drew up beautiful plays to get put his main-man, Vince in a position to win the game. I’ve had it with Smitch.

by Time Intact on Nov 22, 2008 4:43 PM EST reply actions

Frank definitely had a good game. I was scratching my head when he had Carter and other smalls guarding Bosh in the fourth quarter, but it worked out.

by pinetar on Nov 22, 2008 5:03 PM EST reply actions

It will take more than 1 game to satisfy me

by Justin on Nov 22, 2008 5:07 PM EST reply actions

im not the biggest frank fan, but ill give him his due for yesterdays game. good plays, but his subbing was great. he didnt try to force anyone back in the game.

at one point we were on a roll to tie the game in the 4th then vince came in and we went cold and i was thinking it would be nice to let that 5 continue to play to at least get a lead and get us over that hump. but vince was spectacular after that cold spell to bring us back and well the rest is history.

every player and coach deserves all the credit. how many times did we see last years team quit in the final seconds because the lead was 7+? frank didnt allow this team to quit and the players didnt quit on each other. thats what we want to build here and this win makes frank look great no doubt

I completely agree with Justin. This was one game. He won it on calling a play at the end. I have never denied his ability at calling X’s and O’s. There is more to being a head coach than that. He needs better player selection, rotation management and trust in his players. Just sit down and watch like other coaches. The screaming at the players on the floor is so hard to watch.

He always used to say that the good things Jason Collins did never showed up in the box score. I see that from Sean Williams right now so keep giving him time and see where it goes.

When CDR gets back, he should get a shot if Simmons is not producing.

Note to Rod and Kiki—DO NOT even think about trading Vince. You will have a ghost town for however long you are here in Jersey for sure. If you think Yi will be the draw, forget it, he’s soft and useless.

Jason Kidd handpicked frank to become the nets’ head coach because he knew that frank would kiss his butt 24/7 … which byron scott, much to kidd’s dismay, would not do.

Unfortunately for the nets, butt-kissers don’t make very good coaches. They make terrible coaches … and frank is a textbook example.

Frank keeps his job only because nets’ ownership is too cheap to replace him.

Frank’s main claim to fame is that he led the nets from the nba finals to the nba lottery within 5 years … underachieving every step of the way with 3 all-star level players on his team, 2 of which are first ballot hall-of-famers.

The next time that marv albert or another nets’ announcer says that “the nets just didn’t play with any energy tonight”, will be about the 200th time they’ve said it during frank’s tenure. If that’s not a slamming indictment of frank’s coaching ability, then nothing is.

Frank is nothing more than an advance scout masquerading as a head coach. No other team in the league would even grant frank a job interview, much less hire and keep him as head coach for 5 years and counting.

DECLINE OF JOURNALISM, CONTINUED:
I saw this on www.nj.com, a photo caption for a Dave D. story. VINCE YOUNG?

“Vince Young’s game-winning slam, capping a 39-point outburst against the Raptors, left opponents and teammates alike in awe.”

by Bapopik on Nov 22, 2008 9:07 PM EST reply actions

Just one correction: Doug Smith is NOT in the least respected….he is an ass who is a Mitchell apologist and known only for his laziness and his ability to almost always be wrong.
It’s the least idiotic fans who understand that Mitchell is a serious problem…not the Toronto “media”.

@ Peter
“Just sit down and watch like other coaches. The screaming at the players on the floor is so hard to watch.”

I guess you missed the article about Frank’s so-called shouting. He’s not shouting AT the players. He’s shouting out plays. He’s telling them what kind of offense the other team is doing.

But I do agree he needs to shut his pie whole sometimes. Let the guys figure out the plays by themselves. He’s 6-6 right now and in 8th place. A lot better than what other people, including me, predicted. So somethings working.

by kevin on Nov 22, 2008 10:59 PM EST reply actions

Glad to see Frank getting his due. He has no charisma but is just a hard worker. He has his principles and sticks to them. Fortunately some of those principles are to know who he is, praise his players in public and seek no credit for himself. Another principle, which every head coach has to have, is to keep his stars on his side. Thorn is a very good judge of talent and there is no reason to believe he is a worse judge of coaching talent than player talent.

Yeah LFrank, you are the man. Remember Nets’ campers, this is a long season and the vets are here for a reason: in time the mantel will be passed to Anderson and CDR, etc. -

I just wanted to add it was Brian Hill who came up w/ that play,it was used by him in Orlando when he made it for Dwight Howard, so again I don’t see much of anything special from Frank.
