Nets Hang On to Win Preseason Finale

The Nets finished the preseason on a winning note, escaping with a 111-110 victory over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden Friday night. The Nets shot 60 percent from the field in the first half, led by as many as 18 in the third quarter and were up 21 with just over six minutes to go in the fourth. But the Knicks got hot down the stretch and had a chance for the win, but Jamal Crawford's shot from the corner fell short at the buzzer. Once again, the Nets did not defend the three point line well, with the Knicks going 16-28 from downtown, but New Jersey did shoot 52 percent for the game and hit 10-of-19 from downtown themselves. Vince Carter led six Nets in double figures with 20 points in 26 minutes, adding nine boards and three steals. Bobby Simmons added 16 points and eight boards, Devin Harris had 16 points and six assists, Brook Lopez contributed 14 points and four blocks, and Jarvis Hayes made his Nets debut with nine points and four boards off the bench.

VC is in top form so far. Dooling looking good so is Hayes. Second unit almost gifted the game to Knicks. Still problems with 3 point defense. Again Lopez needs to start. He had a very ordinary shooting night but still ended up with 14.

We still cannot defend the perimeter. LFrank has got to do something about this. We won’t be winning much with this kind of defense.

The FA we signed this summer, haven’t played together yet.
Now only Hayes, Dooling back in form, and we get a W, we need Najera to come back. Of course, Boone does, too.

Great shooting got us the win.
Our continued failure to guard the 3-point line is killing us and reflects horribly on the coaching staff … but what else is new.

Great game. Lopez and Anderson good team rebound and better defense. I think Yi will have to play with 2nd unit.
Third Quarter experiment of Ager, Hassle . Williams at Center,CDR and Dooling not a good thing. I hope Frank learn his lessons. Maybe next time don’t use Williams as center, he is too light , Malik Rose is a lot stronger. Dooling 5 errors, not a good sign. To let him lead one rooky and two undependable player like Ager and Hassle. that’s just a bad experiment. INot even going to workl in college basketball.

I’ll take the win even if its preseason against the 16 of 28 from downtown knicks. Vets back and we should be Ok.

JuliusIrving,
I’m sure Ager is not going to play when regular season starts though Hassle may play occasionally and Sean is a big question mark now. So you will not see that lineup in a regular season game.

good game until the final half of the 4th. Hayes had a very nice lookin jumper going for him. if he keeps that up he will be a big lift off the bench, hopefully tomorrow morning he is feeling good.
vince makes it look too easy sometimes, kinda not fair. it was a nice way to end the preseason tahts for sure. even though it is preseason i think its important for a very young group to win games whether they count or dont. i think it would have been really bad psychologically if we lost this one by like 20 or so and getting pounded like we have been since coming back to the states.
good win. good morale booster. now the real deal begins. lets hope all are healthy for wednesday and saturday and for the upcoming season.

bobby simmons did great 4 3 pointers. there is also rumors going around the nets r going to fire frank if the nets do no do well the first month and hire jeff van gundy

Matt if your right, that would be amazing. Van Gundy = my favorite coach. Who other then the greatest coach ever would throw his body in front of punches, grab on to the legs of mammoths, all for his team?
By the way VC showed some healthy ankle ups with that jam in the first half… very nice.

After 82 games, the Frank protector would say, there is always next season.
by jarkid on Oct 24, 2008 11:46 PM EDT reply actions
Finally! it was good that we ended the season on a bright note!
VC is ready for the season, and looking like a superstar! You hear that Ogzy?
Simmons is looking good, he seems to have found his rythm and hell probably or starting sf.
Lopez was alright,but still productive.
Dooling made some big shots, but also made some bad plays
Hayes was a nice suprise! Now we got a shooter off the bench, and can’t wait to c Dooling, Hayes, and Najera together.
Harris was taking it to the rim, and drawing fouls.
Despite our lack of perimeter defense AGAIN, we looked good and can’t wait till the season starts and I hope that everybody is healthy!
Oh and Vince’s dunk? SI got it wrong once again.

too many breakdowns dfensively. again they shot like 70% from three. this has always been franks philosphy to pack the paint, but what he doesnt understand is that in the last few yrs, the nba had become a shooters league, a more guard oriented approach instead of big man approacj, as evidnet of this years draft where 8 out of the top 10 picks were guards and perimeter players. i yhink maybe 11 or 12 out of the 14 lottery [picks were guard. my point isas that frank has yet to learnt to make an adjusment. i mean when a differetn team lights you up every sing;e night from 3, and some of th9ose teams artnt even that good at 3point shooting, there is a fundemental flaw in the coaching schmetaics. this is more than breakdowns. this is too miuch, espeically in the last 3 games where teams have liytt up the nets to more than 60% sshooting behind the arc. the philosophy is wrong. regarflkess good defensive teams defend both the paint and the 3 point line.
and dave d is full of crap. he says that frank cant be bl;lamed aboout not having a good defensive team since he has on;lly two defensive minded players on his team in dooling and nejara. have youe evr heard amore bull coming out of this guy. i can counter that point with facts till the morinng. first off this a schematic probn;lem proved by the recurring same numbers. secoundly, to be a good defender uyou have to have two things, athl;etic ability, and desire. now if i look up and down the nets roster, i see a bunch of athletic players. harrris was pegged as the best defensive guard and pg in the league under avery and it was common knowledge to know that, once he comes here, thats gone. harris ais a better defender than dooling for crying out loud. vc oiis as athletic as anybody in the league and can be a lock down defender if he puts his mind into it. brook has shown he can defend, block shots, and rebopund. yi is still learning how to play defense, but he has all the tools to be a great defender, he has lateral quicks, probably the best for any 7 footer in the league, he has length to alter and blockl shots, he has good bball iq, all he needs is to bulk up a bit. must i go on, sean has the potential to be a defensive player of the year candidate sioemtime in his career, boone, oiis big and athletic, and if plays the 4 instead of the 5 he can [rtoect the paint better. point is is that defense is indicviual and team. last year guys like peirce, allen, house and guys like that played superb defense and they never played a lick of D in their careers before that. its all about coachong the right schemes, and making sure the players follow them. but if you teach the wrong chemes from the get go, theres no way this could be put on the players. but once again dave d will always find a way to make himsefl look like frank’s bitch and ruin his image even more. just report the facts dave d, you dont haver to be frank’s self appointed pr man, it wont save his job or change the fans mind about him. fans know what they see and know the game. whoever has a problem with frank, is not because they have a pesronaly vendetta for him, but because his coaching flat out stinks sometimes. and there wont be anymore excuses this year. brand new spanking team, hes having his full chance to prove himsefl, he has to mid year to prove himself, thats when teams start to click, developeing teams. if he’ goopd coach, the nets have as enough or even more talent than the blazers and the sixers did last year. lets see if he can do the saem, which i doubt. but kiki wont be as patient as thorn, and seeing the moves this year, kiki’s influence on this team is paramount, every move has his prints on it, full print, i think thorn has probably already started to retire.
frank needs to figure it out. thewre problems on both defense and offense. the defense is quite obvious, but fans shoudlnt bee fopoled with the 100 pts barrier being broken by the nest several times this season, the assist per bucket ratio is just horrible, and the ball movement is not evident. this offense is a one man show offense, and doesnt create good enough offensive balance and chemistry. some of the flaws are masked because the nets have good offensive players who can score, but this fundemental flaw will get revealed even more during the reg season. that offense wont last if thats their assst to fg ratio and assist to turn over ratio.
the offense and defense are bogus. he’s trying to complicate too many things. he doesnt lknow how to keep it simple and effective. and because of that this will probably be frank’s ast tenure as head coach in hi9s career,. this will be his last contract. theres no way their renewing him after this. no way. not especially if theyre trying to lure lebron. and i sense he isnt kiki’s kind ogf guy, and the only reason he’s cpoaching is because of his contract. soon enough he;; be toast unless he can prove to the players, management and the fans, that he can actually coach, the youngsters are significantly gettijg better, all of them, and if he can actually coach. being a hard worker is a given, he shouldnt be getting any props for that esepcially if he’s making upper echelon salary compared to most coaches. its about resitlts, being efffective, and adjusting, and develoiping. 4 rthings frank has so far proven hes not able to do.
i dont have a personalyproblem with frank, but i do have a problem with the way he coaches. i mean his p[proiblems are sooo evident, you would have to be blind, or have a man c rush on frank to not realize them.

Frank’s gameplan: if ANY team gets hot from the 3 point line, we lose. Let’s gamble the season on that.

Tim,the same things you see done in preseason are the things Frank will do in the regular season.Theres a history of him doing so.Someone please tell me something that Frank does good.Ill say for the 2nd time ever he put together a good rotation.Name something else!!

Van Gundy? Gimme a break! Another rider to the ankles of Ewing and Yao Ming and can’t a win a championship. At least Jackson rides on Jordan and O’Neal and wins it. I’m not much fan of Frank either but this year will be a real test for him even at the middle of the season. But to even think of Van Gundy? That will like going back to grade 1 again.
by edd on Oct 25, 2008 8:28 AM EDT reply actions
Van Gundy is a quitter … he quit on the knicks in 2001 when he saw where they were headed.
He got fired in houston because he wasn’t getting it done.
Look at the job adelman has done with the rockets since taking over … SHOWS YOU THE IMPORTANCE OF COACHING!!!
I love van gundy’s color commentary on espn/abc … he really calls it like he sees it and doesn’t pull any punches.
But he’s wayyyyyyyyyyyy overrated as a head coach … kind of a rich man’s lawrence frank … which is the last thing that we need.

Great win. VC played great, Hayes had a really nice debut, and Simmons played the way we need him to play, he has shown good signs over the last 3 games. I hope he plays like that this year.

Mina, on the money again. Too many excuses for our porous defense, clearly the players don’t fear that if they don’t defend they will not play. We need a new coach as soon as possible to help this new group of players gel.

So who would you be happy with as coach. I feel like everyone here is like the sports version of Michael Savage. No one can do right in your eyes, everyone has problems that cant be resolved, get rid of everyone!
