No Surprises as Nets Make Cuts

The Nets announced Thursday that they have waived Eddie Gill, Brian Hamilton, Julius Hodge and Keith Van Horn to cut the roster down to 15, which is the allowed maximum. They were apparently unable to use Van Horn's contract in a deal and will now be left with only Devin Harris and Keyon Dooling at the point.

Maurice Ager and Trenton Hassell on our team. Wonderful.

That’s somewhat disappointing about Hodge…he always seemed pretty optimistic about his chances of making the cut. Kiki liked him as well. I guess it’s for the best though…

Release ager and hasell and sign salim stoudemire and Dermarr Johnson.

i agree to wat david is saying…ager and hassell no good…
i hope they never get into rotation…cos they arent good at anythin…i don wanna see them in rotation and eat up the youngsters minutes…which might happen with frank around..

i am sad no doubt about it. when i heard julies was cut i was upset. I felt bad julies hodge tried so hard to make this team. every night he went to play 5 0 5 basketball games in the summer he had so much confident he would make it .
he went to vince carters annual basketball camp.
he julies had one of the hrdest careers first he was suppsoed to be a great nba star gets and getts picked and goes to the nuggest then one day he gets shot and has to be out 2 years and now trying to make an nba comeback.

but he gets cutt

so long hodge!

by tbb on Oct 23, 2008 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

Ager and Hassell have accepted loosing.
They’re not coming off the bench with desire.
If the Nets didn’t have to eat their salaries, Hodge and Gill woulda been the right choice.

by croc on Oct 23, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Hodge is probably the only one that i am upset about being cut from the team.

I mean KVH for sure but Hodge was a bit of a let down.

by vc3fan on Oct 23, 2008 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

At least I don’t mind seeing Ager and Hassel get many DNP’s coaches decision this year. I actually liked Hodge and want better for him.

by Rich on Oct 23, 2008 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

little disappointed KVH’s contract went to waste. when he was part of the kidd deal i thought we definitely could use him in another deal.

i think we all would like to rid ourselves of ager and hassell, but its not easy. there is no point in waiving ager to sign someone who will see as much PT as ager, zero, and having to pay ager to go away.

who knows. we picked up gill for a little while mid season so maybe down the road we will make a trade and have a spot open and if hodge is still available we could pick him up.

best of luck to him and gill. they worked hard. they knew they had a slim to zero chance of making this team. i wouldnt be surprised if they are back in camp next year

by xcalibur on Oct 23, 2008 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

Ager is so much better a basketball player than Hodge. If you were at the Sixer game, you would have seen that quite easily. Ager handled the ball better, defended better, shot better. Hodge is not a point guard.

He should pack up his bags and head back to Australia where he is a basketball god…not to mention what a great place it is.

by Net Income on Oct 23, 2008 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

I was rooting for hodge, I’m sorry man, Hassell’s contract was to big to be waived and Ager…no idea why they kept him. Please Please Rod and Kiki! have something up on your sleeve!

by R.M on Oct 23, 2008 8:18 PM EDT reply actions

why cut the 50 year old Keith Van Horn??? Darnit!

by iiiii on Oct 23, 2008 8:18 PM EDT reply actions

Defense is not a word to be associated with Ager.
Ager couldn’t make open shots nor a simple layup.
Hodge was much more aggressive on the court.
Hodge’s not a pg; he’s a point forward. He goes after guy and attacks.
Ager just goes through motion. I’ve given this kid too much time to prove himself, but he hasn’t and won’t.

by croc on Oct 23, 2008 8:26 PM EDT reply actions

im guessing we are going to trade for a point guard of shooting guard maybe swift for someone idk

by ben on Oct 23, 2008 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

if we dont add a pg in a future trade i wouldnt be shocked if we just picked gill up…again. we dont need to trade for one, just make room for one

by xcalibur on Oct 23, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

can we trade ager and hassell for picks please?

by JJ on Oct 23, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

@croc

You obviously weren’t at the Sixers game. Hodge was AWFUL.

by Net Income on Oct 23, 2008 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

Come on Gill was a lot worse then Hodge

by david on Oct 23, 2008 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

@netincome

Who didn’t have a bad game in the preseason?
Ager surely had worse games. Hodge played well against the Knicks. I hope Ager makes some progresses fast since we’re stuck with him. But Hassell is definitely driving me crazy…a guy known for defense and only defense isn’t playing with any.

by croc on Oct 23, 2008 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

wow that was really a smart move!!!!!!!!!!

to bad nothing compared to the Raptors ;
hmm was it last year; nets vs raptors; 48 point win ahahahha

owned

^ And a first round exit.

by jerrod on Oct 23, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

I’m surprised Rod couldn’t work any magic with van Horn’s expiring contract and one of the many chumps we have on the roster. But I guess there are only so many teams in the league trying to get better, and more likely are trying to actually get better. Hear YI hear YE!

by Johnny on Oct 23, 2008 10:22 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know about you guys, but i thought Gill could play. He came out confident and can make plays. Some nights, he put up some good numbers. We should of kept him and cut Ager. Ager is useless on this team. Hopefully Vanderthorn has something up their sleeve and will make a good move with them included.

by DHarris = Future on Oct 23, 2008 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

Well if we kept Gill it would have cost $$, whereas if we actually need him during the season he’ll be in D-League, and call up on a temp contract.

by jerrod on Oct 23, 2008 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

@jerrod

at least we made it to the playoffs

by Ogzy on Oct 24, 2008 2:50 AM EDT reply actions

Isn’t this all about:

Ager Hassell guarantted contracts
Gill, hidge, and KVH not guaranteed

by stating the obvious on Oct 24, 2008 6:44 AM EDT reply actions

@ Ogzy : At least we made it to the finals twice in the last ten years. What did the Raps do? Haven’t ever passed the second round. And Bosh is soft Forward who plays small, and Jermaine has no knees and is at the back end of his career. At least we’re putting together a team that’s gonna be scary in several years, the raptors are at their peek right now and what do they have? Bosh? So many of the new big men are gonna dominate his ass in a few years, JO? gonna be a gimp in 2 years maximum, Bargnani? C’mon…Anthony Parker?…A star only in Europe…so please shut up!

by me on Oct 24, 2008 7:22 AM EDT reply actions

That’s great Ogzy, what did you accomplish there again? Right another 1st round exit. While we got 3 great players through the draft. Looks to me like your team wasted money, while we gained great players

by jerrod on Oct 24, 2008 8:54 AM EDT reply actions

I would rather have kept Gill as he fills a need, whereas Ager and Hodge do not. Ager is absolute garbage and i hope he’ll be in a suit on the sidelines all season

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Oct 24, 2008 9:23 AM EDT reply actions

Gill will be back during the season, Eddie gill wakes up every morning and says to the NBA “I’m not going away”

by Kidd4mvpbm on Oct 24, 2008 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

Ogzy

Give us two years and we’ll be right back to stepping all over your garbage franchise. Keep tyhinking JO and his balsa wood knees will do anything and keep thinking Bosh and his weak frame will carry you guys to victory

Lopez and Yi will make you sick. SICK. Mark my words.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Oct 24, 2008 10:02 AM EDT reply actions

@dollar bills

Why are you even bothering with a raptors fan? What happened the last time those two teams faced off in the playoffs? Remember, VC had a pretty bad series in Toronto and we still won. J kidd also got in Calderon’s face, while calderon backed down.

We didn’t even have a big man, We’ll technically we had Mikki Moore to fill in, The Raptors had Chris Bosh?

by Kidd4mvpbm on Oct 24, 2008 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

Ugghhh….

So basically we wasted that KVH contract?

So far from Kidd deal we’ve let Diop go for nothing, KVH go for nothing but we did manage to keep Hassell and Ager, the two worst pieces of the trade.

Otherwise, I really don’t mind any of the players being waived that were waived. I just wish we waved Ager while we were at it (I’d say Hassell too but I know that’s not realistic), and then picked up a PG off the waiver wire such as Smush Parker, Dan Dickau, Jared Jodran or Salim Stoudamire.

by Jack Handy on Oct 24, 2008 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

I would have waived Ager and then sign Fred Jones or Salim Stoudamire… I feel bad for Hodge…

PS. I don’t care a bit what a craptors fan says about the Nets.

by Andrés on Oct 24, 2008 11:38 AM EDT reply actions

Gill could be headed to Orlando.

by Andrés on Oct 24, 2008 2:16 PM EDT reply actions

@ ogzy
hahahhhhahah
who gives a crap, everyone knows the Raptors aren’t going to the championships EVERYONE!!!
okay point gaurd
anthony parker?? whos he?
Jamario moon?? whos he?
Chris Bosh… got to give it u he’s good but the team is going nowhere because there is no supporting cast
Jermaine Oneal u know why the nets didn’t trade for him?
he cant even walk without getting injured
bench omg not even going to talk about it

the nets(in the future)
Devin harris Most improved player award this year
Vince Carter All star
Lebron James (even if we dont get him we’ll get someone else to fill the SF role)
Brook lopez (SI predicted he’s going to get 19 and 8 per game)
Yi next Dirk nowitzki

so shut up go back to toronto and watch your team go nowhere

by kingching on Oct 24, 2008 6:01 PM EDT reply actions

wow stop thinking u guys are going to get lebron; he will rather go to like bobcats or something; because at least they have a chance in going over .500 in the season.. and yi the next dirk OKKK there dont go over your head; whats next lawerence frank the next phil jackson????, and what devin harris most improved player? are you stupid? the only way he can improve is to take notes from jose caldron ; AND also at least JO busted knees are better than CArters weak ankles
