Nets Drop Fourth Straight

The Nets dropped to 2-4 for the preseason on Wednesday, falling to the Sixers 118-100 at the IZOD Center. For the second time in three days, the Nets had difficulty guarding the three point line, as Philly shot 14-27 from downtown. After the Sixers scored the first 12 points of the game, the Nets got back into it, but they led for a total of only 11 seconds and never got to within seven in the second half. They had seven players in double figures, led by Yi Jianlian and Brook Lopez with 16 points apiece. Lopez added six boards and three blocks.

obiously most of us weren’t able to see this game, me included but what I’ve noticed is that we really have no perimeter defense and we let the opposing team score too much.
I think if Dooling and Najera played we could have some better defense. Dooling is good at pressuring the defense and Najera is a hrad nose defender.
Also with Hayes, we could have more 3 point shots not just by Simmons and Carter.
Can you guy’s evaluate the players for me for those who did see the game?

2 key starters … dalembert and miller … didn’t even play for the sixers.
We’re in trouble … big trouble.

Anderson needs to give up on the 3 ball… I am going to keep saying it until he A. stops, or B. Starts hitting them

offense is awesome carter, harris, simmons, yi, and lopez were great and should be starting five. simmons actually played well if we just played defense we would be good i mean we scored 100 pts

What have they done about perimeter defense? They are killing us from the arc!

I’m gonna have to change my prediction.
We won’t finish in 15th place in the eastern conference, like i said over the summer.
We’re gonna finish in 16th place.

@ brooklyn bob
you are really annoying me. It’s a preseason game! We don’t have everyone on our team, and some of the players that played are all 21 and younger! They’ll make mistakes
but if your truly a fan you should be supporting them, not bringing them down with more predictions.
by R.M on Oct 22, 2008 10:46 PM EDT reply actions
frustrating that i could get to the game because of night class and it wasnt on tv, but maybe that was a good thing.
tough to evaluate this game. we obviously got crushed against a sixers team that didnt throw out its A team. that is just the type of year we are in. we have no foundation to fall back on. we have too many new players, too many young players and a new system that we are installing. we cant fall back on anything to really stop the bleeding and thats the problem when you rebuild.
just goin by the boxscore, its nice to see brook with 16 pts, but CDR only 2 pts? thats not something i like. i expect him to be a sparkplug off the bench and give us a bunch of points more nights than not.
it seems since we hit USA soil we’ve have been one step behind on everything. i dont mean that in an excuse way because it is not. we played so much better in europe than any one game here. could it be the heat were that bad? did we really bond while away from home to fight harder for wins there than here? could it be every dog has its day and we had 2 in a row? probably the last one.

defense ia all about coaching. im sure the players are not slacking this time around. its all about getting down defensive schemes. i mean this team has shown they are taleneted enought to score. this game was a classic example of the other team being better coached, even though the roster is full of youngsters themeselves. they played without their two veterans, dalembert and miller, and brand hardly played. iguadala uis a sexperienced as harris. and the rest of the roster is less experienced than the nets. defense is where teams show they are coached well. this team, so far hasnt been coached well. last year the suixers were pegged the same as the nets are this year, but they made their mark on defense, thanks to the awesome coaching of cheeks, who knows how to get to players. i think its opbvious, and plain and simple, this team is not coached right.

perimeter defense or lack there of was what killed this team last season.Frank needs to stop with the help defense. This guy is so clueless i cant take it.Theres only one player on this team(Hassell) i dont want to see on the court.I think this team is good but its looking to be a lost season with Frank at the helm.

@ ballagurl
We never had perimeter defense, except when jason kidd was in the mood to play it.
But that was then, this is now.
Get used to this garbage d … unless kiki grows a pair and demands frank’s head on a silver platter.
I love how across the river, mike d’antoni is giving the tough love routine to curry and crawford by not starting them. He also ripped curry in the post-game press conference after the celtic loss.
Frank doesn’t have the onions to bench our star players or publicly call them out … never has, never will.
by brooklyn bob on Oct 22, 2008 11:01 PM EDT reply actions
Don’t they have a coach who helps with defensive schemes? This team has been terribly defensively(perimeter) fo the past three years now. Whatever they have done is not working, maybe they should help only in the post. Or play half man half zone, something where your back court does NOT go past the free throwline/elbows. They always get caught down low and a shooter is wide open, with somebody running out there at the last minute or watching a wide open three. It’s kinda sad now.
Defense is about effort and execution. Half coach, half player. Players can’t have the mentality, “oh I’ll just score one offense”. You have to get stops! And it’s the same thing every game, even in Paris. The Heat just didn’t finish.
by KayBee on Oct 22, 2008 11:12 PM EDT reply actions
“We never had perimeter defense, except when jason kidd was in the mood to play it.”
When Kittles was in the backcourt with Kidd, and RJ decided to play defense, the perimeter defense was excellent. (And of course KMart and Collins were playing excellent interior defense too.) But now we may be in the bottom 5 in the league in defense. There isn’t a single god defender on the whole team – I thought Devin was going to be a good defender, but he’s bad.

A good good offense always beats good defense. Teams aren’t going to shoot those %’s all the time so I am not to worried about it until the season starts.
I feel like CDR is a preseason beast, but nothing else. He is too awkward and clumsy still… He needs to grow up(physically speaking) and then I see good things. But he is to young to expect anything from him on an NBA level.

im pretty sick of watching sub-par shooters light up the nets because they’re left wide open. that’s been happening consistently for 2-3 years now
at least we have some interior presences now. fixing one out of my two pet peeves with the nets. its really great to see a legit post-move every once in a while

Defense is a decision, it’s a decision by the coach and the players to move your butt a little faster than you normally would. How can we get killed two games in a row by 3’s?
by Ballagurl on Oct 23, 2008 12:06 AM EDT reply actions
Harris is not a good orchestrator yet. He can do a lot of things, but he gravitates toward “Starberry” style. Do you think Cuban is stupid? He knew Harris very well and didn’t care much to send him to New Jersey (of course for a huge price).
I am sure he’ll get better, but when?
I love his talent, but as of right now I’m not sure if he’ll do well as a starter at the point. He will be very good of the bench. I hope I’m wrong, we’ll see it really soon.
Don’t forget we lost in J. Kidd coach on the floor, isn’t it obvious?
I think coach is really missing him a lot. Frank needs some time to find somebody to be a coach on the floor (V.C.?).

Matty Action and the others being positive on here:
Brooklyn Bob is right, this team is hopeless with Ratner, hopeless with Frank as coach as hopeless with Vince as the star and “leader”. This club MAY have 27 wins in it if they catch enough teams with no interest in competing against them.
by Isaac on Oct 23, 2008 12:10 AM EDT reply actions
I still think CDR is going to be a big contributor to Nets. The reason he has been quiet in the most recent games is because he did not have balls in his hands enough. Once his teammates get use to him, and give him the ball, then he will be the “bucket”. Go CDR! Keep up with your hard work and have confidence in yourself, you will be a shining star in NBA.
by Elaine on Oct 23, 2008 12:14 AM EDT reply actions
Who cares if CDR has an old man or unorthodox playing style? As long as he can score, he’ll be the man. His strong will to win and prove himself will bring Nets to win more games eventually. Just give him chance and give him playing times, and he will show you how he is the winner.

The disappointing thing about tonight’s game was that the young guys still need A LOT OF coaching on the basics, like rotating on defense, like how to inbound the ball when there was a little pressure, like not broadcasting your intention before making a pass (the ball was stolen twice and thrown away in 3 possessions in a row).
There were a lot of communication breakdowns in offense and defense. I guess this is expected with so many new faces and inexperienced guys. They have a lot to work on, pretty much every aspects of offense and defense. Their preseason tune-up may last for another 10-15 games well into the regular season.
This is not something they cannot overcome, however. I still like our talented young guys and believe they will flourish. Let’s be patient with them.
by Dr. M on Oct 23, 2008 2:14 AM EDT reply actions
Defense is about desire. They must start talking to each other on defense. A lot of this has to fall on Frank. He has to develop a sense of accountability in each player to corporately and individually take pride in defense. The have the mentality that whomever i am guarding (I AM GONNA SHUT THEM THE FU&K DOWN!!! Kenyon had that mentality and with kidd instilled it in others. )Why have we had this problem in stopping the 3pt shooting. I am going to share something with all of you as a former player and now a coach.
When a team and a player is making a high percentage of 3s on you its because they basically dont respect you. I want all of you to watch the mannerisms and body langauge when a player makes a 3. If you get up in your mans face let him know youre there, he wont be comfortable shooting from that far from the basket.
We must begin to ask ourselves. Why do guys come into our building and feel they can just disrespect us like that?? IF THIS IS NOT REPAIRED TODAY WE ARE LINING UP FROM THE SEASON FROM HELL! Reason being guys especailly the young guys wont develop quicker and we need them to develop mentaslly and skill wise ASAP!!!
We dont need the ship to sink to be a sinking before it ever gets out to seas.

It’s not about being positive or negative. It’s all about supporting your team. And it’s really pathetic the way some people here are taking advantage of any loss to enjoy seeing us losing so they can say how bad we are. The funny thing it’s that those people are the self-procclaimed true Nets fans and call themselves diehard fans, but they are nothing more than RJ whinners.
by Andrés on Oct 23, 2008 5:29 AM EDT reply actions
I mean I’m not saying we should ignore all the problems we have. We obviously have got a lot of problems, and we’re gonna struggle until we find something out. But enjoying the losses (PRESEASON LOSSES, btw) and taking advantage of them it’s not funny. Your not supporting your team at all.

Today is cut-down day. Nets need to be down to 15 players.
Need to cut 3, plus Van Horn. Who? Hamilton & Hodge, sure. But the third cut?? I like Eddie Gill as third pg, and am hoping they cut Hassel or Ager, but I think they are going to cut Gill. They won’t cut him, but in pre-season (not in practices..) Sean has looked awful. Swat will be on injured reserve to start the season, and Najara and Hayes too! That leaves 12, with ten to play and two to sit? Can’t wait for the season and my NBA League Pass to start!
by Paul Erstein on Oct 23, 2008 6:01 AM EDT reply actions
Defense is obviously our biggest problem right now. We really need to defend better the 3 pt line. I don’t know if it’s a matter of adjusting and putting it all together because of the new guys, and we obviously didn’t have some of our better defenders (Dooling, Najera), but we can’t defend like that please.
by Andrés on Oct 23, 2008 6:04 AM EDT reply actions
Paul, no way they’re waving Hassell. He’s got $9 mill left in his contract. I think KVH will be waived. That would leave only one spot left and 3 players fighting for it: Ager, Hodge and Gill. I’d keep Julius.
by Andrés on Oct 23, 2008 6:06 AM EDT reply actions
i hope we get rid of ager for gill. i would love to get rid of trent as he has absolutely no role on this team. yeah we could put him in for D but he is not young and not part of the future. i really dont want to see him on the floor at all.
our perimeter D is going to suffer all year. happens with all rebuilding teams. whether its lack of communication, defensive awareness or just young mistakes we are going to get bombed from 3. if we can limit the opponents 3 pointers then that is the only chance we have of winning.
lets remember that key guys have not played. dooling and najera are two big key guys who will be in the rotation and hayes i think will be in there pretty consistently as well. does that mean we will be much improved? not by leaps and bounds but we will be a better team because they are all vets and could add some stability to a lineup.
once again getting a top 3 pick isnt the worst thing. it is the best thing if we cant make the playoffs. even then we would probably be out in 4 so really getting a pick adds even more value to our team. stack up youth and picks and i trust kiki and rod to make a good deal and turn this around
by xcalibur on Oct 23, 2008 9:03 AM EDT reply actions
The team will be fine ,The rookies will get it eventually and its gonna be a up and down season .I assure each and every one that Coach frank has until all star break to produce or implement a team indentity because thorn might be cool with it but kiki is being very patient he is giving frank his opportunity for everything he asked for in a team.
HEY HOW COME THERE ARE NO CALLS FOR VC TO BE TRADED OR HOW HE SUCKS>>>LOL ….YEAH I THOUGHT SO
by barkless on Oct 23, 2008 9:06 AM EDT reply actions
Imo when you don’t have a defensive presence on the court the other team is able to dictate the flow and finds whats working that night. Last night was 3pt. shooting. The next game might be a hot shooter. Another game could be we’re in foul trouble. Over a longer stretch you could see patterns develop like the lack of perimeter defense or getting out rebounded. But its all about defense and I think desire, help, effort and schemes are not what defense is all about. I beleive it’s simply the ability to contest shots comprised of height, timing and awarness. Out of the 3 best guys that provide that 1 plays (BL), 1 sits (Swat) and 1 is hurt (JB). If you only have 1 player that type on the court at a time then you will get the results that we currently are getting. With Boone out it shows a weakness. With 6 bigs we only have two centers, 4 pf and 2 of them sould be sf (yi and Anderson). Frank is destroying Swat’s confidence by playing him at the 5 (even thou he has no choice with Boone out). I’m sure that he doesn’t see that because the 10-15 min Swat gets, none or very few are with Lopez. A significant way to develop players is putting them in a position to succeed and Frank is not good at that.
by libigman on Oct 23, 2008 9:28 AM EDT reply actions
People say that we cannot hit 80 point but I think scoring is not the problem but the defense.
Look where we can get points:
Starters (DH, VC, BS, Yi, JB or BL) will give minimum 60-65
Bench at least 30 so our targeted total is 90-95 and then we’ve to defend that total.
VC: 20 minimum
DH: 15 minimum
Bobby: 10
Yi: 10
If Boone : 5 minimum
Lopez ; 10 minimum
Bench:
Dooling : 10 minimum
Rest 20 minimum.
So we get 90-95 (numbers are average minimum expected).
If Frank plays Anderson giving him consistent minutes, he can easily average 10 as well.
by Tony on Oct 23, 2008 10:47 AM EDT reply actions
@whoever calls defense a decision
Have you ever seen Yi defend? That proves my point. Its all about moving your feet and doing COUNTLESS drills on slides, etc. You don’t just walk into the league and defend.

Well, Ricky Rubio here you come, lol, just kidding…our team has huge potential, they are young, they just need minutes and more minutes, and for the beginning I´m liking, everyone who was supposed to start playing well for a good development is playing! Just Swat isn’t playing very well, but we all know, that big guys take very time to develop properly!
I´m not expecting nothing from this year, just good numbers from our young guys, and the step up into a Superstar for Harris!
We might actually will get Ricky Rubio, on next year draft….

@ Wilson
Yi and Lopez played 31 and 33 minutes. Are you trying to kill them? Maybe a couple more minutes, but that’s it. There’s 2 other bigs that can play; Boone and Williams.
@ brooklyn bob
2 key starters didn’t play for the Sixers? How about 4 key rotation players didn’t play for us; Boone, Dooling, Hayes, Najera.
Defense defense defense, or should I say offense offense offense? These young players just don’t care i think. Or maybe they’ll start playing defense once the season starts. I agree Frank needs to punish them or something (run 2 maybe 3 practices each day). But the players have to also be held accountable. Defense doesn’t have to be taught, you just have to have players that WANT to stop the other team from scoring. It’s simple really. Stick your man and trust that your other teammates have your back. Or is that the problem? Players don’t defend the perimeter because they don’t trust that Yi or Lopez can stop people from getting a layup?
by kevin on Oct 23, 2008 12:29 PM EDT reply actions
Frank’s defensive schemes are garbage and i notice that there is too much help defense where the perimeter is left unguarded, this is why we get torched. i don’t think there is an unwillingness to defend i think it has to be the schemes and what Frank instructs these guys to do. Hopefully defense will pick up when Najera and Dooling are back out there
Replace the coach and this roster would do wonders with the talent it has.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Oct 23, 2008 12:53 PM EDT reply actions
I hope they maintain this good offense. We need at least 8 good offensive guys. I expect the following to produce at least 10 points Carter, Anderson, Harris, Yi, Hayes, Boone, Simmons, Dooling and probably CDR. Once Frank develope these guys and they have a chance of evening up. I am hoping that they learn how to draw some fouls, and thats what normally happens if you have a good set of offense. This will minimize the effectiveness of the opposing teams. It’s hard to play defense on teams with seasoned veterans but if they can put just one of them into early foul trouble, that will help. Any five of these guys produce at least 10 points a game then we will compete.
So this is where a good offense is like having good defense.
Now the other 5 like Williams, Simmons, Najera, Swift and Gill, if he make it to the team , can enter and help in defense specially protecting our offensive players from fouling out. They should come in to break opposing team offensive rhythm.
by JuliusIrving on Oct 23, 2008 12:56 PM EDT reply actions
We have a lot of room for improvement for both the offensive and defensive end, with our defensive problems being much more urgent.
Having the desire to stop your guy, hassle and being aggressive would just be a start. The young guys have to be coached to do that within the scheme of team defense. At this point, we are not playing smart team defense and the sum of their efforts is much less than the parts.
At this point, the top priority during practice is teaching them individual and team defense. I truly believe these young guys have pride and want to be good. But they need coaching and veterans to show them the way.
BTW, even though neither Yi nor Brook played well last night, it seems to me they are developing good chemistry – in one sequence Brook scored in the paint on a Yi assist and Brook also did the same to Yi in the paint.
by Dr. M on Oct 23, 2008 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

It seems like the problem on defense for this team is that either all the guys are watching the paint to help out, or that’s how they’re being taught to rebound so they’re anticipating running back into the paint for the loose ball. Frank needs to allow a lot more man to man defense so guys can guard the perimeter and let Brook, Yi, Swat, Boone, and the other bigs worry about protecting the paint and boxing out for rebounds there. We’re being murdered behind the 3 pt line because no one is within arms distance unless they run from the paint and go leaping with their arms up, but by then it’s already too late.
