Without Carter, Nets Lose Ugly to Celtics

With Vince Carter taking a day off, the Nets' offense was pretty anemic Sunday afternoon in Boston. They shot just 32 percent from the floor and scored just 26 points in the second half, falling to the Celtics 83-66. Ryan Anderson returned to action and led the Nets with 20 points on 5-of-11 from the floor, getting to the line nine times. Yi Jianlian was the only other Net in double-figures, scoring 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting in 23 minutes. The bench, led by Anderson and Sean Williams--who contributed seven points, six boards and three blocks, was more effective than the starters. The Celtics outrebounded the Nets 56-29.

For all you VC haters, I hope you were watching today.

Let’s focus on positives:
Anderson played well and Yi didn’t foul out. Lopez got the taste of playing against the best and it is confirmed Ager sucks. Let’s see how they play tomorrow.

Yi @ the 4 and Simmons @ the 3 = lottery. For Yi I say when your fouls + turnovers are more than your rebounds you didn’t play well but he did play against KG so I’ll give him a pass.

guys
7 points, 6 boards, 3 blocks, 2 assists and 1 steal for swat..
thats a pretty decent game for him..

Also, we need to see who can be that 3rd leading scorer behind Carter and Harris, and right now Simmons doesn’t look like it.

i don’t mean to be a bummer but without VC
devin struggled too seriously 0 for 8??
but the celtics are the best team in the league
and with Vince, Josh, Najera, and Hayes (and Harris actually) playing
we might have only lost by 5 or 6 which is not horrendous, especially against the defending champs
plus yi was in double figures in scoring, swat had 3 blocks against a frontcourt of KG and perkins, and HELLO!!! ryan anderson had a monster game without Vince and all the stars. isn’t that saying a lot about a rookie?
anyways, good try to the guys and now please cream the knicks tomorrow!

to be exact—-
Ryan Anderson 25 min 20pts 4rebs and 8-9foul shooting

whoa. a rebuilding team w/o the franchise player lost to the defending world champions? dam, we need to blow this team up!
couldnt watch the game so im not going to bother try to evaluate play by the boxscore, but one thing i would like to see more is MORE MINUTES. yeah i know we want to spread the PT around, but when boone and swift are out i would have liked to see mainly Yi and Brook play closer to 30 minutes. yes we have a game tomorrow so that could come into play, but hopefully these last few games these kids play more minutes. i think its important to get these kids as much playing time as possible w/o burning them out.
hopefully against the knicks we can start to see somewhat of a consistent starting lineup and rotation pattern. harris-vc-simmons-yi-brook im guessing for tomorrow and i hope as a unit they play a lot together and see how we do

Big reason why CDR should have started, but it’s the champs so who cares. We already know Mo Ager sucks, why did we have to start him to see that.
by jerrod on Oct 19, 2008 7:17 PM EDT reply actions
Gabe Pruitt had 12 reb. I am done for the rest of the day.
by jerrod on Oct 19, 2008 7:19 PM EDT reply actions
I am pretty impressed by Yi’s scoring ability, and he seems like he is not a 4. However I could see him play the 3, and Sean Williams at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez. Lawrence Frank should try that lineup instead of Simmons at the 3.

Ryan Anderson Sucked it up with his 3’s… he needs to abandon that aspect of his game until he can hit the gym more. Stick to the put backs and hard work.

JUST GIVE YI THE BALL AND NETS WILL START WINNING!
by Jackey on Oct 19, 2008 8:05 PM EDT reply actions
‘Big 3’ or no ‘big 3’ for the celtics … we lose.
Carter or no carter … we lose.
The only difference was the margin of defeat.
Say hello to the nets of the late ‘80s, because that’s what we’re stuck with for god knows how long.
by brooklyn bob on Oct 19, 2008 8:08 PM EDT reply actions
Bob why are u even typing here when u think nets sucks balls? The nets looks good if frank will play their main players.

Just being realistic, jackey.
There’s no sense in kidding ourselves.

Guys we are yet to see the full team playing regular minutes so we’ve to wait before we pass judgments on the team. What we can see is individual performances.
by Tony on Oct 19, 2008 8:28 PM EDT reply actions
@ Tony and Jerrod, lol. I wondered too why CDR didn’t start at the 2.
I would like someone else at the three, someone who is playing hungruer than him. CDR has been better than him so far in the preason.
Didn’t see the game, but how did CDR and Kenyon Dooling do?
by KayBee on Oct 19, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions
@ Pranav,
DH is just tasting what JKidd tasted when VC was out…now he’ll have to adjust. A top tier player always changes the flow of the game. That in itself is rarely recognized by fans, but the players see it. I’m sure DH knows he’s going to have to work twice as hard without VC, with no room for error.
by KayBee on Oct 19, 2008 8:58 PM EDT reply actions
im telling you netfans this offense that frank implemented is suspect. it just doesnt seem yo create any openings, open driving lanes, or shots. its seems easy to defend. they just seem to pack the paint, and the ball alwasy seesm to find, after dribbling and dribbling, the censter on top of the key
by mina on Oct 19, 2008 9:55 PM EDT reply actions
hey it wasn’t that bad we didn’t have carter and we didn’t have boone Najera or Hayes once all of them get healthy we will be fine. carter would of put up 20 so we would of won if he played and boone is a good player
by matt on Oct 19, 2008 11:04 PM EDT reply actions
I dont get why people read into the wins and losses of pre-season. There are a lot of players who wont even make it to the floor in the regular season and all types of fake line-ups/line-up testing in these games. Relax. Lots of teams go undefeated or only lose 1 game in pre-season only to end up at the bottom of the league. Just like the spurs went winless in a pre-season a year or 2 ago and i’m sure none of you honestly thought they’d be that bad during the regular season. We wont really know what we have until a few games into the regular season, so just be patient.

Gabe “Freakin’” Pruitt looked like Jason Kidd in this game, and Devin Harris looks also like Jason Kidd in this game, too, for his shooting.
Bobby Simmons sucks, that’s for sure, start Ryan Anderson at the 3, or CDR.
This is gonna be a long season, and we are not spurs. We don’t have a guy could score 20 points easily beside Carter.
We should remain Jefferson and forget James.
Harris, Carter, Jefferson, Boone, Lopez should be decent, damn it.
by jarkid on Oct 19, 2008 11:53 PM EDT reply actions
i like this team, but i think that they have a long way to go, as far as scvhemes, offensivey and defensively, goes. this offense is not creating the openings. i mean running tradtional sets like pics, isos, and post ups, is what all great teams do. and we have the guys in harris and carter, that can create of isos and picks, because they attract attention. post usp is what i wanna see brook do. the dribble drive offense is predicated ion spreading the floor. having hassel, and ager there doesn not work in htis offense. also i dont like seeing brook away from the basket like that. ikt will stunt his development in the low post. frank should implement the offense that he had 2 yrs ago, when the nets were decimated by injuries to their 2nd and 3rd leading scorers, kristic and rj, and still were able to put up about 100pts per game and they didnt even have any shooters.
let carter create of isos and picks, same with harris. it seems everytime they run that weave, the defense just [packs the paint, and they settle for a jumper. its not creating any open shots or driving lanes. now i hope it might just be the fact that they stikll arnt used to the offense, but from what ive seen, i dont know. this offense is predicated on guys who can dribble drive and the nest only have vince, harris, dooling, who isnt a great passer, cdr, and yi can dribble drive some and will get better at it. theyre not like the celts who have multiple guys who can handle the ball.
the nets have talent but they seem disoeriented. also in the two games ive seen carter play, i havent seen handle the ball enogh and hence his low asist numbers. everytime he touched the ball and initiated the offense, it at least created and open shot for a temmate.
i think the nets have to play their youngsters. i wont like it if nejara takes minutes away from sean and anderson, and hayes taking away minutes from cdr. for the nets to make the playoiffs this year, everything will have to be perfect. carter having one of his superstar yrs, harris taking the next step to stardom, yi taking the next step,l brook becoming a force down low, cdr becoming a spark plu off the bench, simmons to find his old form, same as hayes, anderson being a productive rookie, which i kinow he has it in him, sean to display the form he had pre allstar last year where he was one of the top 3 rookies and a force and game changer, for boone to stay healthy and imprtoving his offensive game and protecting the paint better, not to have any big and long term injuries, for frank to start coaching like a real nba coach, and having help from one of the eastern teams who are on the cusp of the playoffs collapsing.
now its not impossible for all this to happen, but the odds are low. so for the nets to win with a “purppose” as kiki noted, they have to play the youngsters. they have to gain experience for 2010, so the nets can have a foundtion in place to lure lebron. the nets will also have 5 draft picks, 3 first rounders and 2 nd rounders by then. if they get lucky in the lottery next year if they dont make the playoffs, and if they pick as well in 2010 like they did this year, they can have a hell of a team by then. they already have the cap space necessary for a max contract by then, so they have to stay the course. and the hardest part in all htis is for frank to play his youngsters.
brooklyn bob, you say thre nest probably wished they had rj tonight. ii recall last year whenb vc went out for 5 games with the ankle sprain, it was rj’s time to prove that he can be a number 1 option and a franchise type player like his salary shows. but i remember the nets barely cracking 75 pts, and 35% shooting in all games, and that was with the hhof pg kidd running the show. rj is the kind of player whos highly depending on playmakers. he cant really create for other period, and hardly for himself cause he cant dribble. yi has already shown that he could be a better scprer already. the fact yi can shoot tons better than rj, can dribble the ball better, has a better post game with that unguardable turn aaround J, he can run the floor as well as rj, is definitly gonna be a better rebounder, and he still hasnt even scratched the nsurface of his potential. and this is a guy who has played non stoop basketball all yyear ro0und for over 5 yrs. the kid is only 20, and even if this not true, he looks 20 to me, he’s 22, big deal, still super young. yi has so much more potential thaan rj. he can be betetr than rj in every facet of the game. he already has shown he can score with the best of them, and we all know he can rebound, he had 5 and half boards last year in 20 mpg, and was an excellent rebounder and defender in the olympics. once he gets more comfortable and is able to find his niche, this trade will go down as one of the biggest steals of all times. rj is worth half the money hes making, and with the nets he was ovverated thanks to kidd and vc. nobody in the bucks are even close as playmakers as these guys. their best playmaker is their center for crying out loud. and for sure yi and simmons wiull avareage much more than rj will all alone. this is a great trade. the fact that they found a taker for rj, and its the same guy who tried to trade for him a coupple of yrs ago in skiles, the fact they shed his coontract, the fact that he and vc just doesnt make bball sense and cap snese, the fact that they got yi, its an absolute no brainer. i know rj is one of the fave nets of all time, but bball sense he had to go.
this team will be fine if frank can figure it out. his job depends on it. if kiki doesnt feel the youngster are progressing as p0lanned, and if the team sucks badly, hes a goner. young players usually need an ex player who can relate to experience wise and culture wise. i feel that marc jackson could be a great coach for this team. he is aan ex pg and they ususally become the best coaches, same as baseball managers the best managers are usually catcheers. i hope frank can right the ship, but he had a couople of suspect decisions this offseason, like putting simmons on house, he should know already that wont work in a million yra, and putting hassell at the 4 will benching sean in the preseason, which doesnt make any sense. also that offense seems suspect, and he hasnt been able to get his nteams to play defense. they just dont know how. its either what he teaches isn going through their head, or he’s teaching wrong, or theyre giving a deaf ear to him.
i know this is preseason, but the nets are a new team, and usually preseason for a new team can tell alot about the team. hopefully when vc gets back, and when harris gets comfortable, and when nejara and hayes come back tyhey might be beter, but well see. but without question this team is loaded with talent, some of it might be young, but the nba was always about development. all successful teams develop their players, just check oout the rays.

guys pls check out mike kahn’s rating at msn.foxsports.com/nba
he has ranked RJ at 29..which means he is better than VC at 38, gilbert arenas, shawn marion, rip hamilton, ron artest, pau gasol, antawn jamison, brandon roy, AI, shaq, m redd, hedo and a list of others..wat was this guy thinking, when he came up wit this list of top 50 players currently in the league…sucks….down right////

This game proves what a lot of us have been saying since the RJ trade, that VC is now the only offense the Nets have and without him this team can’t get to 80 for the night. When the reg season starts, look for teams to doubleteam him routinely.
by mt57 on Oct 20, 2008 9:19 AM EDT reply actions
I don’t think Frank will make it through the season this year, he’s already making poor decisions with the offense, one on one matchups, defensive schemes and taking players away from their strengths. Yi should be focusing on pick and pop and running the floor, Lopez posting up, and Harris slashing. I’m not seeing any of this regularly and players need consistency in order to develop. This offense sucks and I don’t see any of our young players besides CDR and Harris benefiting from it. It’s too predictible and why are they using it so much? It’s one dimensional even if done correctly. Sigh, long season until we get a better coach.
by Johnny on Oct 20, 2008 9:37 AM EDT reply actions
Well unless we acquire another player, the starting lineup should be:
Harris
Carter
CDR
YI/Ryan Anderson
Brook/Boone
I now know Simmons can’t dribble and drive like RJ did for us. He might be able to post up, but, I have yet to see it. Forget “experience” and start CDR even if he has some lumps along the way. CDR knows how to score and will only get better.
by JustinNJ on Oct 20, 2008 9:43 AM EDT reply actions
Once again guys, this is pre-season. It’s the time for running plays and going away from player’s strengths at times and testing matchups, thats what this time of year is for. You have to test your players’ limits so you know what they can and cant do outside of practice. There are even guys who will not be on the team come Oct 29 who are on the floor now and being played in certain matchups. Don’t expect to see what the real team game will be like until about 2 games before the season starts. Thats when you use your real lineups and play calling to get ready for the season.

@ mina
While carter was out with his ankle sprain, kidd was sabotaging the team with his fake d and ridiculous turnovers.
If you want to blame that on rj, go right ahead.
But i put the blame on kidd himself, as well as on frank for not benching kidd and holding him accountable.
