Boston Rests Stars, Still Beats Nets

Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen did not play, but the Celtics were still able to handle the Nets Thursday night at the IZOD Center, 111-108. The Nets scored the first nine points of the game and led by as many as 14 in the early minutes, but the Celtics scored 37 points in the second quarter to take a three-point lead at the break. Boston controlled the game for most of the second half and when the Nets had a chance to tie on the final possession, Chris Douglas-Roberts was stripped by Eddie House. Vince Carter led the Nets with 19 points in 22 minutes, while Yi Jianlian added 15 before fouling out late in the third. The Nets turned the ball over 26 times, while House and Tony Allen combined for 53 points for Boston.

Frank is a dumbass..How can you let yi and brook still in the game when they had 3 fouls under 6 minutes.

by lol on Oct 16, 2008 10:23 PM EDT reply actions

ya and let trenton hassell play for 19 mins….

by yogi on Oct 16, 2008 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

Why is Yi still dunking with 2 hand? if someone grabbed one of his hand he can’t finish it, that why he should dunk with 1 hand. I blame the poor coaching in this game and the laziness of the players. Yi with 0 rebound!!!!!!!!!

by lol on Oct 16, 2008 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

yi had 15 pts, but 0 rebounds…wats the use of being 7 feet tall??? add 6 PF and 3 TO also…

by yogi on Oct 16, 2008 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

Yi is not strong at all how do u get 6 fouls and and ur 7 ft. kristic is better than him. i am getting excited for season though, i saw the highlights on nba.com and not bad even though we blew a 14 point lead huh. izod center got new hoops new scoreboard new led scoreboard, sources say since economy is so bad no way nets are moving to brooklyn so that means no lbj, but njsea said if the nets stay they will put 95 mill into renovations including plasmas all over better food concessions and just brighten up arena

by matt on Oct 16, 2008 10:32 PM EDT reply actions

i tink hodge and brian hamilton are out for sure… i hope ager goes too…

by yogi on Oct 16, 2008 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

I watched the whole game. It was a disappointing way to end but I’m still excited to watch the Nets this season. We definitely have a talented bunch.

I also heard rumors that the Brooklyn deal is close to dead. What does anyone think of the chances of the Nets moving to The Rock? That would be ideal seeing them in Newark…

by KFranchise on Oct 16, 2008 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

damn… no LBj …. we are screwed.

by jarkid on Oct 16, 2008 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

Frank called too many unnecessary timeouts, as usual.

So we had none left near the end, when we needed them.

Frank sucks … always has, always will.

calm down guys

it’s just a preseason game

by R.M on Oct 16, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly. Calm down guys. It’s only preseason. On another note, Sean Williams sucks.

by Nets in 09 on Oct 16, 2008 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t mind trading Sean Williams.

He has the tools, but he has no brain, just trade him.

And this team still can’t preserve their big leads in any games.

by jarkid on Oct 16, 2008 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

wat abt bobby simmons and hassell…no good….they jus played a lot of mins….

by yogi on Oct 16, 2008 10:45 PM EDT reply actions

This is a pre-season game guys… chill out..

He is experimenting with lineups and was not worried about foul trouble. Leave Frank alone and talk about him after 20 games.

Yi was good when he was there. Rebounding will come. He was fouled out thanks to our guards who let Celtic guards run wild.

I don’t know why they don’t post up Lopez. Numerous times he requested the ball but was not given. He will be Ok

Devin and VC played poor defense and Nets let Celtics to shoot way too many 3’s. That’s where we lost. It seems like defense is going to be the problem with Nets not offense.

by Tony on Oct 16, 2008 10:45 PM EDT reply actions

@Nets in 09

I agree that it’s only preseason but Sean Williams does not suck.

The guy had butter fingers, and seemed lost at times, but he does not suck.

He has so much potential, and he’s got to learn how to handle down the post.

Now I think we lost today because of our turnovers and 3 pointers.

This could have been a perfect chance that Hayes is needed were he can shoot the 3, and were Najera can help us defensively, and Dooling looked pretty good out there!

by R.M on Oct 16, 2008 10:45 PM EDT reply actions

guys i have a doubt, how many players shud be on the roster when the season starts….15 right?

by yogi on Oct 16, 2008 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

so tony they gotta get rid of 3 players….any comments???

by yogi on Oct 16, 2008 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

Brook Lopez is a stud.

Sean Williams is horrible.

Bobby Simmons is horrible.

CDR needs to learn how to play Defense.

Yi needs to rebound.

Devin Harris and Carter need to play Defense.

Keyon Dooling wasn’t bad.

Trenton Hassel is garbage.

Eddie Gill is garbage.

Scalabrine and House played well. Oh wait…they aren’t Nets anymore.

by Matt H on Oct 16, 2008 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

Yogi,

Nets have 15 guaranteed contracts so numbers are not a problem but need a another PG so Nets need to free up one roster spot.

by Tony on Oct 16, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

Guys relax its preseason. Why are people complaining that Frank left Yi in the game? Its PRESEASON. Let Yi get his burn.

Gabe Pruitt seemed like he wanted the Nets to make a comeback with all of the dumb fouls he committed.

SEAN WILLIAMS SUCKS EDDIE GILL IS OK YI NEED TO REBOUND.

NETS ARE NOT MOVING TO BROOKLYN KFRANCHISE AND THEY ARE NOT MOVING TO ROCK THEY ARE JUST GONNA MAKE RENOVATIONS TO IZOD CENTER WHICH THEY ALREADY HAVE WHICH I NOTICED WHEN I WENT TO THE GAME TONIGHT. WOW CAN U BELIEVE THE WHOLE LOWER BOWL WAS PACKED

by matt on Oct 16, 2008 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

Nets need to improve 3 point defense. They ran back to rim every time when somebody try a 3. That is a recipe for disaster.

Man, Yi has a smooth stroke. He would be good for at least 15 per game as long as he can stay there.

by Tony on Oct 16, 2008 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah Frank preaches packing the paint first. 3 point line second.

by Kidd4mvpbm on Oct 16, 2008 11:02 PM EDT reply actions

he might have a nice shot but he can’t get rebounds. dooling is mad nice

by matt on Oct 16, 2008 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

I thought I missed a good one till I read you guys’ comments…was it really that bad? They only lost by 3 per the boxscore, right?
I think Tony said that defense is going to be the problem and he is right. In Paris and London I noticed the late rotations and bad ball awareness on defense. I also remember the Nets having trouble guarding from the perimeter for the last few years, so that may fall on the coaching and the way defense is being set up. I don’t know cause I didn’t see this game.
Yi has to get stonger and so does Brook. We have to remember Yi’s from China and they don’t play as aggressive as we do over here. It took Yao a FEW years to adjust, plus Yao had size in his favor too. Yi is a nicely built, but he’s a toothpick, just like Sean and Josh. At least Josh played 3 years college, neither Sean or Lopez have that many years of collegiate ball and it helps.
Devin Harris and VC’s defense…well to be honest few guards play great defense and have great offense. There are a select few that can do both very well. I ‘m not giving them a pass either, especially since I didn’t see them play.
So tell me, was there at least fight in this game? Someone had to have a good game if the score was so close…

by KayBee on Oct 16, 2008 11:05 PM EDT reply actions

No one is calling Yi a finished product. Right now he is a finesse player. Yes he has to work on his body, conditioning, back to basket game, A lot like Barngnani

Why the hell did we blow a 14 pt lead due to lack of D?
Dooling was GREAT pickup
Don’t run plays for Hassel.

by jerrod on Oct 16, 2008 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

i was at the game, here are my observations

*Vince Carter was getting after it on both ends. was sprinting up and down the floor and looking like a leader. yeah a guy should do that, but because of the direction of this team vince’s play and attitude will be scrutinized more. he played very well today

*Yi seemed a step slow. only his 2nd preseason game, but did have his moments. you can see how silky smooth his jumper is, yet we run no plays for him in the post. he doesnt have a game, but let him post up and then face up. he also needs to improve his ball handling as when he drove sometimes he lost the ball. the fouls were ridiculous and some were stupid fouls and things that can be fixed if coached properly

*Bobby looked good. its going to be hard for cdr or someone else to take him out of the starting lineup. hes the type of guy frank is going to like to play. best ive seen bobby play (open house plus paris game, didnt see london’s game).

*Boone had a boone-type of game. he didnt stand out of either end much but did what he had to do to be productive. he kept balls alive

*Devin had an ok game. still too many turnovers for our entire team and devin had some sloppy plays. maybe hes trying to hard to create for teammates i dont know, but everyone needs to wake up with these sloppy passes. i also think he should be more assertive once the regular season starts on the offensive end

*Dooling was solid. he has the rep not being the best pg and just a good combo shooting guard, but he came in and ran the offense. he didnt come in looking for his shot which i thought he would since this was his first action. he was aggressive on both ends. once hes fully healthy he is going to be very good for us

*Swat still is not showing me why vince and frank were praising him so much. i love sean, but you gotta give me something! didnt kiki talk about working on your strength instead of your weakness? wasnt sean working on his defense and using his athleticism? sometimes when he got the ball on O he was a black hole and did his 1-handed turning hook and was careless with the ball sometimes. i still dont like how he plays small and tries to recover with his leaping ability. cant someone tell him that hes a tall guy and should play like it?

*CDR had some nice moments. has a nice runner, is active on defense yet was a little shot on his 3’s and had the ball stripped at the end with a chance to tie or take the lead. i think cdr is crafty enough to be a decent scorer. i think we should use him more on the offensive end

*Hassell is not one of my favs. he kept taking fadeaways and i dont think really fits in with this group. when najera comes back i think that pushes hassell back and even hayes should be infront of him. would be nice if we could move him

*Swift tried to score every time he had the ball. sometimes made a crafty move in the paint, other times taking jumpers he should not have been taking.

*Brook was by far my favorite to watch tonight. THE MAN IS BIG. yes that is the theme since we drafted brook and i saw him close up at the open house, but to see him against guys like big baby and powe you really see how huge this KID is. not only is he tall, but he has a good frame and boy are his arms long. he kept a lot of balls alive because of his length and smarts. he got rebounds that in the past we would have never gotten unless kmart out jumped someone. i really do love this kid and eventually i think he will be the center for the future. his post moves were smooth and solid. he only had one bad shot when he was forced to take a shot with the clock going down. he has a jumper and has a good knowledge of what he can do in the post. he just needs to gain a step on defense and he can be a defensive factor to us.

*other notables

during one of the timeouts they wanted the people to dance. well there is usually an older guy who dances behind the opponents bench, but last year and this year there is a new guy who is emerging. he was dancing and it was hilarious. Sly then danced with him and then another dude. before you knew it you had a crowd of people, including marco G, dancing in the isle. it was one of the highlights of the night. very funny to watch.

im not sure how it looked on tv, but driving in it felt like there were a lot of people going to the game. looking around in the arena the bottom looked like there was a nice crowd. and yes, more asians were there than normal so im sure ratner (who was there) and yormark are smiling.

good atmosphere for a preseason game that didnt have kidd or jefferson playing. i did see one kid wearing a 44 scalabrine shirt, it had to be a relative, but im not sure. veal got some cheers and boos, same with house

by xcalibur on Oct 16, 2008 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

O and guard the damn 3. If Ray Allen play we would have gotten slathered

by jerrod on Oct 16, 2008 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Yi can defend big man but little guard was getting to him. On the rebounding side, he was just standing there and won’t go at the ball.

I blame frank for losing this game because he should take yi out when he had 3 fouls under 6 minuses in the first quarter. That is the reason why yi fouled out in the third quarter and we needed him at the end with brook lopez.

Our team offense sucks! Where the dibble and dive? They were throwing the ball at each other! That why there were so many turnover.

by lol on Oct 16, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

OK I just took a quick look at the boxscore and see Devin had 6 turnovers…Know it’s preseason but he’s gotta get those down. I think maybe they could try Dooling Harris Carter Yi and Boone or Brook and Boone for a starting line up. At least until DH gets it under control. It looks like DCR had a ok game and I think VC is too slow to guard guards. I don’t see Yi being a big rebonder, he may average 15 and 5. He’ll play some 3 and four, but not a force in the paint. He’s not a banger and I don’t think that’ll ever be his game.
Nets had 26 turnovers to Bostn’s 14 and they got hammered by Tony Allen. Eddie House has a quick release when he’s hot he’s hard to grad, so the 21 points don’t bother me. He lit the Lakers up for 18 in like 12 minutes in the finals last year. He played in NJ too so we know he’s a shooter.

Roster still needs tweaking, besides those without contracts! Again, it will take half the season for things to shake out, and for the rookies to even begin to get their acts together. But here is the secret…are you listening…
come closer….ready? LET THE KIDS PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s right, Lopez, CDR, Anderson, YI, Boone, and Swat. They need minutes in real games. Play them with Harris, Carter and Dooling and let the rest of the team watch. PLEASE? That’s a nine man rotation, and the SECRET to the future and back to the eastern conference finals in 3 years!

@ Jerrod, lol (your analysis).

by KayBee on Oct 16, 2008 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

you could see that guys are still confused at times with the offense. couple of times you could see vince and devin waving guys to go to the other side of the court, which takes time off the clock and rushes the play.

i think we all can agree that the silver lining in this meaningless preseason loss if the play of Brook Lopez. Rebounding, hussle, post play, positioning. all things he did. since the presidential debate is upon us, the phrase ‘he just doesnt get it’ is thrown around. well with Brook, imo He Gets It. ya its preseason, but even in college you saw a kid who wasnt going to blow you away with amare type of dunks, but a kid who does play like tim duncan. brook may never reach the level of mr.fudementals of timmah, but he is our mr.FUNdamental.

when brook is running up and down the court he just looks like he gets it. it may sound weird, but sometimes when you watch someone you can see this guy is going to have a productive year. the size, the smarts, the ability. he has all the components you need to be very successful in this league. just very encouraged by his play no doubt

by xcalibur on Oct 16, 2008 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

Yi is a year or two away from being a force down low. He’s got plenty of game with his back to the basket, but he won’t play down there until he beefs up.

We lost because we let Tony Allen go 11-18,10-12,32 in 29 minutes and Eddie House 8-13,5-7,21 in 25 minutes.

The dribble-drive looked different in this game. They dribbled into a pack then had to pass back out from a double team. That’s why there were so many turnovers (25). Against the Heat they weaved across at the foul line, above the defense.

by yehyeh on Oct 16, 2008 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

even though the nets lost, there are positive signs. this is the first time i watched them on tv as I only heard and read about them in london. with tonight’s game, it was evident that coach frank is still finding his effective combos. KD was put in the game for the first time and he had some offensive and defensive lapses too.

- watch out for the first 5 combo (DH, VC, BS, YI, JB): YI has no defense and needs to improve his help defense. He finds himself too late all the time – causing him 5 fouls in 3Qs. DH and VC should take the lead. They can definitely take advantage of their penetration and set shots for JB, Yi and BS. With drive to the basket, VC can take jumpshots better than taking 3s. DH needs to take it to the hoop and improve his short range jumpers or floaters.

- SW looked like a bust. He’s not playing his old game and seems to be thinking too much. Last year, he tries to block shots. Tonight, I saw him more trying to be on help mode (aka Jcollins). I foresee him being traded if he don’t stop being a mascott.

- dribble-drive-hand-off: they tried this with KD, EG, CDR, TH and SW. It worked for few possessions and turned over a lot. They swapped BS with TH towards the end, but Bobby isn’t RJ who can slice. In the first half, they also tried this type of play with BL at #5, which was wrong, because instead of BL manipulating the paint, he was forced to go in the middle for a hand-off that led to a forced shot. Same thing for Stro who was assigned at 5 and tried to drive to the basket bec he saw an opening. Unfortunately, he has no dribbling skills.

Overall, the NETS are interesting. They can keep this team for a while and focus on who should start before regular season starts (last 3 games, maybe…). This way they can focus on improving their defense (m2m, zone and help). maybe they should find someone to formulate defensive plays? :)
 - DH, VC, Yi/RA, JB, BL
 - KD, CDR, Jarvis/BS, Ed/TH, Stro/JB

I was glad 2 c a good amount of people show up 2 the game tonight…and it was preseason! thats a good sign!

We did have some problems tonight, but all in all, i think we can all agree that brook lopez is a stud and he should be getting more minutes. Yi did fine except for rebounding. It looks like Brook has that aspect under control. We always needed a scoring big man and he didn’t look too bad tonight. Plus, this is the third PRESEASON game of the year. We still have an ENTIRE season ahead of us!

by DHarris = Future on Oct 16, 2008 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

If Devin Harris has to be our leading point guard, he has to learn how to handle the ball, and reduce the turnovers.

And where is his defense? Don’t let me think of that he was schooled by a streetballer, and all of his defense power are gone.

Who let Tony Allen looks like Kobe Bryant ? Eddie House and Scalabrine were killing the Nets down the stretch. They don’t know how to play defense on the perimeter.

by jarkid on Oct 17, 2008 12:10 AM EDT reply actions

Sean Williams HAS to strengthen his hands and grip! He can’t keep letting bounce passes and rebounds go off his hands. This is just preseason, but, those tendencies will be critical turnovers and missed opportunities in the regular season.

by JustinNJ on Oct 17, 2008 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

I love Boone, but, I do have to admit, Brook should start right away. He has a very similar look and playing style to Tim Duncan. He will never be that good, but, that is not a slight. Duncan is the best PF to ever play. Brook has very similar moves and as mentioned above, he is fundamentally sound. It seems he has a knack of making an impact at all ends of the floor. He even kind of looks like Duncan. lol

this was an embarrassement for frank. his team looks lost out there. now can a buch of subs make the whole nets team look like garbage.

first off this offense sucks. no plays get created off it. no open shots. and teams pack the paint on it and wont let devin drive, forcing him to jump shooted. the celst offense was soo crisp. franks should just let the players play through their streghts. have devin and vince play the pick n roll, and pick n pops. call some post up plays for vince, yi and brook. this offense is so out of wack. the other teams no whats coming, and the nest cant counter. i dont know why frank always finds a way to complicate things, and not be ablt to get guys in position to succeed. i mean even every time they ran that stupid weave, nothing happened. guys look lost on offense and defense. i mean i know it takes time, but these guys were awful. none of the big three played, and guys like house, allen and pruitt, yes pruitt and their bigs were running such a crisp offense. that tells me that frank got outcaoched bug time by doc. he needs to play to his players stregths. brrok needs post ups, he can score. yi needs iso’s pick n rolls and pops for him through devin and carter. devin isnt able to initialize anything thorugh that offense. and if he wants to play that offense, then why the heck is hassel on the floor. the whole basis of thr offense is to spread it out. but when hassel is on the floor, its impossible.

i still see frank in his tubborn ways. where is all this talk about development. this is preseason. there was a point in the end of the 3rd and starting the 4th, he decided to go small with hassel at the 4. the nest have 7 bigs for god sakes. why th ehck is hassel, who cant even defend and play oa lick of offense playing instead of sean. i mean the only way guys like sean will improve is if he gets the playing time. and sean feeds off others. when the whole team is discombulated, he wont be able to do anything. frank still wont learn. i was supsect about him developing young talent, but if he doesnt have the patien ce with young talent in preseason, then he;s a farce.

what frank is good at is wasting good talent. harris cant do anything with that offense. nothing. theye packing the paiont, and he’s expecting harris to jump on them or what. sp[read the damn floor, and play the pick.

the only positives out of this game is once again carter, cdr, yi and brook. yi might not have ghad any rebounds, but he played well, and in time this guy will rebound. he did average 5 and half rebounds last year in 2o min of play. but i like the way he scores, puts the ball on the floor, and reads plays. its ahrd for him to guard guys on the [peroimter unless their bigs, but inj time hell get their, you can see he’s gonna be a player.

brook has to start. he defends, rebounds, can score, and is a real center. josh cannot score. all he can do is renound and cant defend the paint for a lick. brook ius already a far superiois player than him. hopefully frank doesnt stun brook’s development, and has him starting from day one. so far in preason he’s been much better than boone.

carter was the only one getting whatever he wanted whenver he wanted. i liked the spirit he showed in preseaon. he’s taking it serious, and is getting to the rim with force. everytime a play went through him, something opened up for something else, if not himself.

cdr is good, artheltic and can score period. he also renounds and defends. this kid has to play. hes much betetr than dooling.
know pople should know the value of mracus. dooling cant run a team. marcus is a playmaker, and dooling isnt. marcus can create and is a betetr shooterthan dooling. that decsion will haunt the nets.

there was a time where frank ha, listen to this, simmons defending house, and carter defening scalabrine. and it happened on consecitve trips, like for 8 min. what was he thinkin./ same as last year he hafd booine defending curr y, and collins defending randolph. thast what im talking about no real game experience. he has no clue about a players abilties and talent. to him theyre like robots.

this team has talent, n but its being misused, and not beiung put in position to succeed. whats with his love affair with hassell, this guy sucks. he cant do anything. i guarantuee you that frank will only play brook, wi and cdr, and the rest of the youngsters wont see the light of playing time. and the only reaosn why these guys will get to play is cause he has no choice they can play.

if frank kjeeps on coaching like this, ghell coach himself out of a job. im sure thron might have patience with him, but not kiki. im sure kiki ralized every single stupid move frank made. this team needs a coach like doc, a guy with experiences, and knows how to relate wtih players. framnk is just clueless. to him its numbers. i thought he would learn from his mistakes, nut after seeing the celtic bench beating the whole nets team at the izod, it brought hat feeling back, that feeling that frank sucks. i just dont get hos coaching and decsions. he preaches defenmse, but cant get guys to play it. he changes offenses every year, and every year it gets worse and worse. this team has talent but its being wasted by frank if he keeps on coaching this way.

good post, but I have somethings that are different, Dooling is a better shooter than Marcus, and faster than him.

Otherwise, Marcus is surely a playmaker while Dooling is a scoring point guard.

Obviously I was in my usual seat last night. Here are the positives, because thats all you rate in PRESEASON. We are young, guys!!! ANDIT IS ONLY PRESEASON. You leave a guy in in Preseason if he is going to be a contributor #1 because you want him to get continuity and confidence ( NEW GUY NEW TEAM) Doesnt matter how many fouls Yi.

You experiment, see who has what against live competition. Use your times outs to teach. teach and teach some more especially with rookies and 6 other new players. This team has some real potential. EBERYTHING DEPENDS ON HOW QUICKLY THEY JELL.. I LOVE DOOLING! Puts alot of pressure on the point and attacks offensively. Great pickup.

I like Sean and everything but maybe now is the time to deal him off.
He has looked rather crappy so far this preseason, and you allready know Anderson, Boone, Lopez, Yi are in the roation, which means Sean would have to beat out one of them, and i dont forsee that happning.

So would anyone do this deal?

i saw the game and DH sucks! Dooling was better. You guys are right its only a pre-season game. But did you see VC? when he played he was so serious it was like a regular season game. If he keeps up that intensity all throughout we have a very good chance

by tbb on Oct 17, 2008 9:00 AM EDT reply actions

When you go small you suffer. Yi is not a 4, he is a three. He played a backup pf and had 0 rebounds, got into foul trouble and the team gave up 111 points. Yi’s defensive limitations at the 4 forced Lopez to help and got him into trouble as well. Yi wasn’t the only reason but the biggest reason we could not defend. Swat has a ton of ability but is not developing and we have 6 bigs but Hassell plays the 4. To those who say its preseason and will probably say in December its early, I say fans and media see a fraction of the time Frank sees the team and if he can’t figure it out now, who says he ever will. He has not shown the ability to develop a rotation with his bigs to create a defensive presence. If he did that then the guards could overplay at the perimiter and force the game into the paint, which would be our strength.

by libigman on Oct 17, 2008 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

My impression – the Nets have a terrible roster. I don’t like Hassel, Swift, Simmons, Hayes, Ager, Hodge, Gill, or Hamilton. Worth keeping but definitely projects are CDR, Anderson, and Williams. Najera and Dooling are legit backups. Probably have to start Boone, Lopez and Yi, which is going to be disastrous.

This team is going to get blown out night after night. This season should be about developing the young players – forget about winning. Don’t waste minutes on backup journeymen – if your going to lose anyway, let the kids play.

by halwas on Oct 17, 2008 10:11 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know why people are so excited about Brooke, The guy is soft and very slow. Sean williams sucks. I honestly think that Swift is the nets best big man. Vince Carter was great but I feel sorry for him. The team probably won’t make it to the playoffs and he’s going to get blamed for it. Hopefully he’ll get traded to a better team by the deadline.

From Ben Couch’s report:

“We really had a hard time with their random pick-and-rolls,” said Coach Lawrence Frank. “Our talk has to get better, our trust has to get better and our schemes have to get better. That’s all part of the process, because we were fragmented at times offensively, and we put up 108 (points).”

I do think the schemes (defensively especially) need work and that falls on him as well as the players. But talking and being disoriented on offense is not his fault. He’s not out there on the floor and he can’t think for his players.

He may not be the best coach but I don’t think he’s the worst either. Whatever they decide to run the players are responsible for executing, on both ends of the floor.

I do hate his subsitutions at times. After Europre I wouldn’t run any plays for Hassell. It’s not his strong suit, but from what I hear from the posting board, he had plays ran for him.

Overall though, I think the Nets will be fine once they lock it all in. I like CDR’s mentality. In the same article, he siad he was going to watch the tape to get better on defense.

by kaybee on Oct 17, 2008 11:01 AM EDT reply actions

comparing this game with last year preseason I saw a lot more to like. For one Lopez looked legit. He handled Glen Davis well compared to last year when Davis manhandled Magloire

Yi did a lot of good things showing a nice offs so e repertoire. The Celts went at him early but Yi held his ground getting stops which resulted in the early lead. To complain a out his rebounding is just inane. We already know he can rebound

Vince looked great showing he can still dunk with authority. In the third he really got into it with Tony Allen. Scoring over him while bodying up into h and having words with him afterward. The type of thing he is always criticized for not doing

On the down side I can’t argue with some of the coaching criticism. The Celts looked mi h more organized and the dribble drive handoff looked like a misconception. If this was Franks idea to alter the dribble drive then fire him. LOL I never say that

by iSpartan on Oct 17, 2008 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know why everyone is getting bent out of shape, after this is the Celtics we are talking about, who won everything last year. Secondly we have 8 new players, it’s going to be a mix and match process probably through the whole season. But I agree, this dribble drive system is just garbage, and totally not exciting to watch. You feel like it will never develop into a fluid offense and the plays are just so predictible. If we are ever going to develop players, Brook needs to constantly be posting up, Yi the 15-20 foot jumper and CDR slashing. Frank will be toast this year if this sytem bombs, I don’t think Kiki and Rod will take this for a whole year. Especially with the supposed strides Swat has made and turns in another garbage performance. He might be just all faux finish, the car with the nice occasional glimmer in the sun that never seems to run reliably.

by johnny on Oct 17, 2008 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

Not a great game, but we had the scrubbiest of the scrubs on the floor for quite a bit, it being pre-season and all. still had a chance to tie there at the end. Eddie House was great, he killed us. too bad Veal had to make some lucky threes — we would have won it. I saw some great rebounding though. Lopez was able to get his hands up over everyone… he looked good. Carter had his game face during the game. I like that. He’s playing aggressive D too. Swat is all over the place, and not in a good way. Never looked like he knew what to do.

by J Tallent on Oct 17, 2008 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

Veal has his spots on the right side. Either way the Nets were content with letting him shoot as opposed to House who just killed it last night.

by Kidd4mvpbm on Oct 17, 2008 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

one more thing about Sean, I don’twant to see him at the 5 again, he just gets mauled, I want to see if he become a defensive forward like Bowen or Artest

by iSpartan on Oct 17, 2008 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

Yi needs to attempt to rebound the ball if he is going to start….0 REBOUNDS for a 7 footer is atrocious.

I don’t like Simmons…

I still say we start Lopez and Boone together. Yi’s lack of rebounding is a cause for concern.

tell me how scalabrine killed us in the 4th

by matt on Oct 17, 2008 11:58 AM EDT reply actions

I was surprised at how our backcourt got outplayed by the Celtic scrubs. We made Tony Allen look like LeBron out there and let House shoot 3s like he was in his backyard, and our offense did a lot more dribbling than driving. Devin had a bad game and Dooling looked rusty, but VC hit some unbelievable shots.

The frontcourt looked OK (Brook will be fine and Yi has a great stroke) except for Swat and Stro, and I thought that Hassell, while limited, provided some veteran stability at times. Simmons looked so-so and CDR showed flashes, but will hit the wall big time after the league catches on to his game. As far as the coaching, the new schemes need a lot more work on both ends but Frank’s substitutions were fine given that it’s the preseason.

by jabez on Oct 17, 2008 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

Man, I don’t recall having seen Veal hitting 3’s like that since game 5 of EC semi-finals in 2004.

by Andrés on Oct 17, 2008 12:24 PM EDT reply actions

My my how the tables have turned after ONE game. Yi was a hero last game, now he’s hated. Nothing bad was said about Frank, but now people want his head after a 3 point, let me repeat, 3 point loss.

Guys relax it’s the preseason. Maybe things will be different during the regular season.

This is a rebuilding/very very very young team. Losses and mistakes will occur more times than not. Control yourselves.

by kevin on Oct 17, 2008 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

Scalabrine was 4 of 11, his poor trigger happy shooting kept the Nets in the game. He got lucky at the end and finally made a couple while the Nets let him keep shooting.

Yi not rebounding was a non issue. The Nets outrebounded the Celts by quite a bit.

by iSpartan on Oct 17, 2008 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

No one’s mentioned the play of the game, when CDR showed guile, competitiveness, and toughness by running the length of the court, giving up his body to stop what everyone else in that arena thought was a gimme for Pruitt !
If we got that from everyone, we wouldn’t have to worry.
And if the Mets got that they’d be playing now.

@ mina

How right you are, again!

This team has a lot of potential with the right coach of course. The pieces are there but if you don’t have a coach that’s smart enough to put the right people in at the right time, what’s the use? As long as LF is coaching, the Nets have NO chance. It’s very painful to watch. Watching DH play is like watching John McCain campaign, very erratic!

by shady1 on Oct 17, 2008 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

it is really about putting the right people in at the right time at this stage? I think at this point we have to sacrifice some things in order to get all the players out there. I don’t think the W is the main goal for us right now.

by J Tallent on Oct 17, 2008 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

You guys must have clues about LFrank.

In the past, he loves Jacque Vaughn, Jason Collins, Darrell Armstrong, now it would go to Trenton Hassell.

Don’t surprise if Trenton is going to be our starting PF (LOL)

by jarkid on Oct 17, 2008 2:38 PM EDT reply actions

@ J Tallent

I agree.

Clearly the young guys & the bench need to get playing time RIGHT NOW! I don’t know if LF knows but it’s called development. You would think he would be trying to figure out what he has but noooooooooo, that means he would actually have to coach. And we all know he can’t do that.

And the starters will be beat down by season end. Starters playing against 2nd & 3rd string players? Seriously? I enjoy watching the other teams develop the youngsters. Having some kind of coaching skills can go a long way.

by shady1 on Oct 17, 2008 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

The only thing frank is teaching these guys is how to lose to a bunch of scrubs.

Same old, same old. Some things never change.

Unless kiki grows a pair and demands frank’s head on a silver platter, we’re stuck with little larry for the next 2 years.

LOL

There are so many laughable and funny comments here.

I am not meaning that the comments are bad, but it really makes me laugh when people tried to make metaphor.

For example:

“Watching DH play is like watching John McCain campaign, very erratic!” LOL

“The only thing frank is teaching these guys is how to lose to a bunch of scrubs.” LOLOL

“We made Tony Allen look like LeBron out there and let House shoot 3s like he was in his ‘backyard’” backyard ! LOLOL

“Yi was a hero last game, now he’s hated. Nothing bad was said about Frank, but now people want his head after a 3 point, let me repeat, 3 point loss.”

LOL… really funny.

Welcome back… I noticed you had nothing to say for several days or about the two wins over Miami, but of course you had to crswl out of under your rock for this one.

For all those frank haters… did you guys like Byron Scott? I remember people calling for his head as well, look how that turned out.

by Tim on Oct 18, 2008 1:47 AM EDT reply actions

@ tim

Only a complete moron would compare byron scott to little larry.

The idiots who were calling for byron scott’s head are the same idiots who think that little larry is a great head coach.

One of those idiots, in particular, stands out … rod thorn.

The same rod thorn who let eddie jordan get away to the wizards and who back in the day, fired future hall of fame coach jerry sloan.

The same rod thorn who has led the nets back to laughingstock status … just like they were when he joined the team in 2000.

“Damn, I hate when I get called out on my true self.”

There are some optimists on this site, some realists and some pessimists. You know which one you are. People like you tend to be the most negative and insecure people.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure I’m correct and this trend will continue all season long.

Gee thanks, I like it when people call me a moron. I wrote 2 lines worth of a post, and you attack me like that BB?

I am merely making the point, that this is all the same. You wanna freak out on one coach, but then this will just repeat itself over and over again. You wont be satisfied until the Nets win a championship. Both coaches are very comparable, a win is a win and a loss is a loss. Coaching is like shooting… if it goes in, its a great shot, if it doesn’t, oh my God what a terrible shot, who would ever take such a shot!

by Tim on Oct 18, 2008 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

tim wake up, comaring frank to scott, is like comaring a 91 hunday excel to a top of the line rolce royce. not even in the same class. and the day they fired scott here is the day they went from prominence to mediocre. if it wasnt for kidd, frank wouldnt of nevr been an nba head coach. and i can bet that if rank gets fired, and i am sure if in 2010 they get lebron, frank wont be the coach, he will never be a nba nead coach again, ever. thorn is a great president, but he did screw up in the frank extention, thats about his only flaw. lets just hope frank learns from his mistake, but by his coaching so far in preseason i dont think so. for god sakes he put simmons on house, and he says he’s experimenting. my god he’s an nba head coach, he sjould know already that was setting up his players for failure. how can he not notice it. i mean he’s experimetning with his coaching not with the players. this guy just doesnt get it. too bad neither scott, who’s been incredible for the hornets, or jordan who has the wizarsds play amzing ball admist all the devestating injuires. yet frnak can never sem to get ove the hump. shame on him. he better learn quick, or kiki wwill pull the trigger. we all know frank is on a tight leash, it just got tighter.

by mina on Oct 18, 2008 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

@ tim

Just a wild guess, but was i one of those “frank haters” that you earlier referred to?

Was i also one of those who “called for byron scott’s head”?

I’m a lawrence frank critic, not a lawrence frank hater. I didn’t call for byron scott’s head, either. On the contrary, i applauded and praised byron scott during his tenure as the nets’ head coach … although even byron had room for improvement.

I just don’t happen to be one of those koolaid drinking fans who cheers and waves pom poms when the nets’ owners, executives and coaches make terrible decisions … and make them over and over and over again.

These criticisms are not the result of 20-20 hindsight, as you suggest they are. Every criticism that i’ve made of ratner, thorn and frank was made before the fact as well as after the fact.

NBA owners, executives and coaches need both luck AND skill to build championship contending teams. Those fans who think that it’s just dumb luck alone or just pure skill alone that builds contending teams, aren’t paying very close attention to the nba.

by brooklyn bob on Oct 18, 2008 1:26 PM EDT reply actions

For everyone who is saying I am comparing the 2 coaches, read what I wrote again please. I am comparing the “calling for removal” of both coaches.

If I need to explain any further, the point is not the comparison of their skills, plays, or anything else, but the fact that every single team has a coach that a large group of “fans” hate and want fired. Even the very “best” of coaches. There are people in Utah who want a new coach just because they want change, lots of fans don’t like Phil Jackson. Look at all the people who think Larry Brown is a good coach, yet even he cant change things on the teams he goes to. If anything my point has more to do with the fact that the coach really doesn’t mean much at all. I really don’t think it ever has. I happen to think Mike Brown is the worst coach in the NBA, but it doesn’t even matter, he has Lebron.
