Nets Beat Heat in Another Close One

The Nets will return home with a 2-0 preseason record after beating the Heat 94-92 in London on Sunday. With Trenton Hassell, Yi Jianlian and Brook Lopez starting, the Nets were active defensively and hot offensively early on, leading 30-11 late in the first quarter. The Heat came back though, and the game was close throughout the second half. Miami led by four with just over four minutes to go when the Nets took control on a 12-4 run that included two buckets from Yi. They finished the game off on the free throw line. Vince Carter played and led the Nets with 19 points, Yi finished with 17 and Devin Harris added 14. Lopez struggled at times, but grabbed a game-high 13 boards--including 7 on the offensive glass--and tied for a game high with three blocks.

Man… that was the best preseason game I’ve ever seen. I loved that the stars wanted this game bad enough to play in the 4th quarter.
Yi looked good, and I don’t think CDR is a fluke. He is all energy, all business when he gets on the floor. He comes in and immediately impacts the game. Hope he keeps it up.
Our bigs need to get stronger (Yi and Brook). A lot of times they had a hand on the rebound but were out-powered. Hopefully more confidence will take care of that. They were in position most of the time so that’a s good thing.
I hate to say it, but I think Sean Willams will be traded. I think it would do him a better service too. I just don’t see him getting any p-t behind Yi, Brook, Boone and Najera. Swift, Hassell and Simmons didn’t impress me either, but I missed the first half of the game. Fill me in and let me know what you all think about Sean (with facts, not just personal opinion).

Thanks and hope you all enjoyed the game! VC looked like a leader out there, btw.

PS – I just saw Lopez (Robin) block Kmarts shot, he’s handling his business in Phoenix!

YIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII JIANLIAN!!!!!!!
Man he was a flipin beast out there.
Brooke was great too after a rough offensive start.

This ladies and gentleman is why we say “In Rod we trust”.

I admit at first I greatly apposed the RJ trade but if YI can consistently play like that…..man good things good things.

Yi looked great. I really liked his play tonight. I loved that clutch bucket VC scored over Marion in the last minute. Hodge, Swift and Hassell looked really bad tonight.

Yi was very good and Lopez plays well after rough start. Probably he was nervous. I don’t think Hodge can handle PG. VC was great.

Big F’N Yi. That jumpshot is absolute water. The fact that Lope rebounded from a bad start to finish with 8pts 13rebs 3blks is very encouraging. I like what i’m seeing so far from the young frontcourt.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Oct 12, 2008 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yi needs to learn some post-moves and learn to dunk with one hand when he that out far. Both of his miss dunks were with two hands. He needs to slow down when he does his fade way jump shot.

He needs to go after the ball and not just stand there and look at it. He only has like 2 rebounds.

Other then that, I think he was a great defender and he can be the third option in this team.

Sean an dBoone didn’t play. I don’t feel like explaining why. Anyway we need Sean, no way he gets traded. His shot blocking, and improved offense will be great for us. Najera will see alot of his time at the sf spot, and close games at the 4.

by VCforTHREE on Oct 12, 2008 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

I have never had a problem in giving credit where credit is due. Yi was great in hitting the midrange jumper. Nice stroke. But defensively, and rebounding need I say anything and if you remember my comments thats where I have a problem with Yi. Too bad he will be posterized on that DWade jam. Even the announcers said you have got to be more physivcal than thast. But overall great debut for Yi.

there goes hodge’s chance at making the roster…he can’t play the point.

Anyway…the game was kinda boring except for that last quarter…yi looks good. Brook lopez looks good. Simmons need to step it up.

by Andy on Oct 12, 2008 5:55 PM EDT reply actions

Yi played poor defense? Against who? I thought he played well on both ends. Heat had 27 turnovers. Nets clogged the lanes. Somebody was playing good defense.

What no one has mentioned and which I noticed last week at the open gym is what a very good passer Yi is off the dribble. That bounce pass to Carter was special. He is 20 years old and a seven footer who can 1) shoot, 2) pass, and 3) rebound.

That trade COULD turn into gold.

by Net Income on Oct 12, 2008 6:02 PM EDT reply actions

Simmons played well in the limited time he had. Remember he was playing with the second unit, and he was doing the best he could. The one thing I take out of this game that I have not seen in years is HUSTLE. No one was taking it easy on both O and D. That and the way VC got in Brook’s ear when he was struggling was very encouraging.
Remember when all the writers were sayin the Nets were going to struggle to break 70 pts?

by bandit110 on Oct 12, 2008 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

I liked the two plays towards to the end of the game when Yi and Lopez combined to block Anthony’s shoot in the defensive end and seconds later both of our young bigs were right there to tip in Carter’s missed shot.

Lopez played very well down the stretch despite playing with 5 fouls.

CDR didn’t do as much as Thursday. But I think he didn’t look bad at all.

man. i dont have nbatv and i was at work. can anyone link me a site were i can watch highlights or the entire game? that would greatly be appreciated.

sounds like i missed a good one. for brook to struggle first half and end up with 13 boards is VERY encouraging. during the summer leagues he wasnt a moster rebounder which got him some negative attention. with his size and good hands he should be able to get close to 10 a game. yes that is a lot to ask for from a rookie, but he is smart so i think he can do that more often than not.

sounds like Yi played very well. his first legit action after hurting his ankle. there is only so much prep and game simultations you can do in practice. the real way players learn is against real opponents, not in team scrims.

cant wait for thursday! back to the arena to see my nets LIVE! brook & yi vs kg & perkins. that will be a very good test for those two. as well as for swat, we’ve seen boone do well against good bigs, time for yi,brook and swat to get some time against mainly those two. also cdr on pierce will be fun to watch

by xcalibur on Oct 12, 2008 6:29 PM EDT reply actions

Jerrod,

I know Sean and Josh didn’t play. Reason I made the statement about Sean is that his competition (teammates) may be more ready to play than he his. I like Sean and what he can do, but what he can’t do might get him traded. Remember, they were trying to trade him over the summer… Even though he’s had a good camp, it has to tranfer in games.
I just wanted to get people’s assessment on Sean per his play so far in comparison to the other rooks, not his potential. I wasn’t trying to ask for an explanation in a nasty way.

by KayBee on Oct 12, 2008 6:40 PM EDT reply actions

Brooke looked like a rookie today, and so that is OK. CDR tried a little too hard. Devin didn’t shoot well, but looks like he is 10 miles an hour faster than everybody else. YI really looked good. The Bucks are going to be sorry for having given up on him after just his rookie year. Swift can’t finish. Gill will make the team as 3rd PG. Hodge will NOT make the team, nor will Hamilton. I think there is still a deal to be made, involving one of the bigs and KVH’s expiring contract. Want to see Dooling play. These were two good wins, considering they were games 1 and 2 of pre-season!

by Paul Erstein on Oct 12, 2008 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

That was a very good game… YI was good.. harris can give him the ball same way he use to give to dirk.. im real excited about this teams potential and we played well without keyon dooling who i think is better than most guards that played tonight :)

loved it when the fans did the wave, it was crazy.

Anyways, the future is looking really bright for us, Yi’s jumper is so smooth and he can pass and rebound. Brook got off to a rocky start but look at all those rebounds!

Vince was amazing, he looked like a leader and played very well.

It was a great game, and your right, it’s crazy for people to think we won’t even crack 70 points.

I was very impressed by the Nets.

We got Celtics next right? Here’s our chance to see what else these guys got.

And for the record, Swat should stay, release Ager and Swift.

Hope Hodge plays better, it was just an off day for him.

by R.M on Oct 12, 2008 7:40 PM EDT reply actions

there is a chance we wont release or trade anyone. hodge or gill arent guys you will jump through hoops to make sure you have on your team. i rather have gill than ager because at least if needed gill could contribute to this team whereas ager has no future or current spot on this team. he doesnt do one thing well to utilize him, gill can at least be our 3rd pg.

i saw the first half highlights from nba.com. Yi had a sweet pass to VC for a flush and showed us his nice jumper. at the open house you can see how smooth Yi’s jumper is and how impossible it is to block it, but he was rusty and you could see he didnt have his legs under him as he was missing during the open house.

hope there is a site that has more indepth highlights or the entire game that i could watch

That was the most exciting preseason game I’ve ever seen! The Nets have made an amazing turnaround since last season in terms of depth, morale, potential, and cap space…IRWT!

by Special Delivery on Oct 12, 2008 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Man Yi played great. But like HONESTLY Carter needs to teach Yi how to dunk. Both Yi and Lopez were a bit weak on the rebounding. Yi watched 3 rebounds slip out of his hands (maybe all the traveling is catching up to him). But im sure it’s gonna get better when he gets more practices. AND they have to waive J. Hodge!!! man like no offense, but the dude SUCK! 0-6, 4 TO in like what? 10mins? No idea why they let this dude bring the ball up the court when he gets strip 2 times straightout. But man i think we all should be excited about the upcoming season! If Yi can grab a couple more rebounds..like maybe 7-9? and the scoring stays the same, Nets could easily hit the 100 PPG. I think Nets might be better off starting with Lopez>Bonne. Lopez might be young, but the dudes crazy long, hes bball IQ is maddd high. Watch us hit the playoffs.

by JustinNJ on Oct 12, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

I have never seen such intensity in a preseason game. It felt like a regular season game. There was not a play that the Nets took off. They were defending 30 feet from the basket. And the defensive rotation was the best I have seen since KMart defended the entire court on one play 5 years ago. An equally amazing thing is that none of the commenters have attacked LFrank. This must be a record. Could it be that the team has bought into what LFrank is selling about D?

by mt57 on Oct 12, 2008 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

This is what I hoped for. A good start.
I really don’t care if Frank not good enough. I just see how good this team and very determined. I hope they stay healthy and there is no way they would not be better.

by JuliusIrving on Oct 12, 2008 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

I’m sure the sold-out crowd helped with the intensity…When you’re playing in front of that many people who are as excited as the European fans were to see American basketball it helps to bring out the intensity of the game…Unfortunately the Meadowlands atmosphere is going to be nothing like this.

i want every person that discriminated yi or brook, to eat their words right nowwwwww. if some of you havent seen the potential in these kids, then youre blind. yi is special. he has alll te tools to be one of the best players in the nba. i have never seen a 7 footer with that type of athleticism. he’s soo graceful and smooth. he is by far the most athletic 7 footer this league has ever seen. and his potential is limitless. hes only gonna getr much better. i was soo impressed by him. his shot is off the charts, and its unguardable. he also showed some real good defense. he;‘s quick laterelly, and he’s long. him and brook really showed solme thoughness blocked that beast anthony from the heat in the end of the game.yu also like his bball iq. he can pass the ball, and can also rebound and block shots, which net fans will see. milwakee will regfret this trade for a long time. as good as rj was, his potential is nowhere near yi’s potential. yi is soo much more talented and skilled. once he gets seasoned and experienced this kid will be an allsatr no doubt.

brook showed something today. he played real good defense, and rebounded and blocked shots. his offense will come, he has the great offensive skills. but i was impressed with the way he played. and if he can build on that, the nest got real lucky getting him at 10.

these guys should be the starting frontcourt from day 1. brook is the nets best and momst legoit center, and yi is the best 4 they got. you go with them and build with them. for people who think sean should be traded, then youre fooling yourselves. sean probably needs more time than others to get it, but what he has is soo hard to get. if they trade him cause they dont want to invest in his unlitmited potential, then they got a problem. sean is gonna be a monster, and showed glimpses of it. this guy along with brook and yi will fortify the frontline for the nest for ages. anderson is also intinguing but he doesnt possess the potential these guys have. it doesnt mean he cn be a great player, but he doesnt have the star qualities these guys have. boone is also pretty good, but he doesnt possess the potential that make gm salivate like sean, brook and yi. boone is a scrapper, a rebounder, and a huslter, but he’s not a game changer.

i like what i saw from vc. he was vocal and played with force. harris also shows alot of promise. once he gets used to running the offense and gets used to his temmates. i didnt like having hassel with the first unit. he doesnt spread the floor proerly fot he other guys. having simmons there is much better. hell give much more room for vc and harris.

cdr is showing that when he gets the ball he can do whatever he likes. i love his jab step and he has a pretty good first step. hell definnitly anchor the bench for the nets. i rather have cdr and hayes provide the scoring punch than nachbar, hwos soo erratic.

also dooling will make a huge difference. he defends and has a great handkle of the ball. hopefully hell get to distribute the ball more.

all in all the nets are in pretty good shape foir a rebuilding team. they have so many parts and assets.hopefully frank will get this team to be as good as they can be. im happy about them, and is really happy to see yi show his stuff. hopefully they can build on this.

And if on Thursday KG destroys both of them, as he surely will, remain calm. They are 20 years old.

by Net Income on Oct 12, 2008 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

Hey there is no reason the Nets can’t play like this every game. This is what wins games ….DEFENSE and HUSTLE. Last year we would have collapsed and lost the game. The Nets played like this five years ago in front of our crowds at the Meadowlands on a nightly basis. These Nets should do the same when they come home. I for one will be there on opening night. I know I usually scream my head off so should everyone else.

Over all, the Nets had done well.

By the way, the Nets still had many mistakes on this game.

Turnover, and giving up the big lead. Especially, they still CAN’T guard the last possession.

These problems have lasted for about 3 seasons, I don’t know when they will conquer these.

Hey guys I am not Chinese but I am an Asian. History wise Basketall became interesting partly I believe when it was introduce in Asia long time ago . It was seen that a different dimension of skill much better than what the inventor anticipated. So Yi can be an extension of this new dimension. We have seen Dirk N., Peja S and Petrovic Maybe this is the Asian version. I know Yao Ming mad some impact already.
What made more happier is we got CDR. I like to call him Mr. Common DenominatoR which will make this team jell. It looks like I am dividing but really I am just factoring it so they all add up as a whole.

best part of this video? http://www.nba.com/video/games/heat/2008/10/09/nba_mia_njn_0010800023_recap.nba/index.html the 2:20 mark. love the intensity yi and carter showed. it showed how much they wanted to win this game. gotta love it that a young team, led by a so called “dog” wants to win every game they play. thats is not something i think is easy with a very young team. yeah they want to win but you gotta hope those players take winning and losing personally. i think we have guys who take that approach

by xcalibur on Oct 12, 2008 11:41 PM EDT reply actions

will Yi reach Dirk’s level? im not sure. still way to early into his nba career, but there is no doubt he has the ability to. what he needs is to take that leadership role and wanting to have the ball in his hands. his ball handling needs to get better if he wants to take that next step. he has to do what vince does for us and what dirk does for dallas.

what happens if Yi gets 4 fouls and 8pts against KG? is he a bust again? Yi, just like all the young kids, will have good games and bad games. the better players string more good games together than the average player can. i think yi can deliver more games than not, especially if he is smart defensively and doesnt pick up quick fouls. thats my main concern, his D. thats why i cant wait to watch him live thursday. if frank does this 2 platoon thing and yi and brook are not playing i might charge the court. i probably wont, but i will want too

KayBee, I wasn’t trying to be nasty. I seriously was to lazy to explain why they didn’t play. Sean is a big part of our defense, and I can’t see us trading him.

by jerrod on Oct 13, 2008 12:33 AM EDT reply actions

hey do u guys think will all the young players and YI will attract bigger crowds to the izod center. i personally think yes. i wish the nets could play in front of the crowds they had in europe

by matt on Oct 13, 2008 12:46 AM EDT reply actions

ya i also didnt get why hassel played so many minutes. this guy isnt in the nets equation. he shrunk the courtoofr harris and vc. especially when the nets were up by two with vc wit the ball in his hands. hye had intentipsn of driving, but they packed the lane, and he had to take a jumoer. if simmonas is on, or cdr, they spread the floor, and vc pr harris will have much mroe room to operate.

i didnt get it at all. hassel, shouldnt play period. hes not even a great defender. if i were the nets i would buy him out. its not like theykll use his exp contract to take on extra salary next year. this guy is a gonner. and no tea will trade for him and his contract. the only reason why i see hassel and swift geting minutes over guys like cdr, even soimmons, swat, boone and anderson, is maybe because theyre trying to showcase them for a trade, thats the only thing that makes sense. hassel shouldnt be playing unless, ebvery otyhe rplayer in front of them are in foul trouble or injured. especially at the three i would of played simmons so he could get used to the starting lineup.i would 0of expiremented with anderson and swat there, especially with marim playing the 3, thats a good cover for swat.
these are the kind of decisions that make you question frank. what iis he thibnking. every secound these youngsters get is so valuable to their development. simmons should of started, so he can get used to getting fed from harris and vc. now it will take longer for them to gel. i mean hassel was an offensive cog, and its not like his defense is needed.

talking about defense, i thought vc played some great defense. he was active with his feet and hands, with steals, and blocking the lane. vc alwasy had it in him. he was the college defensive player of the year for two consecutive years, and hes also pretty athletic. but to be a good defender you have to be in a good defensive sysrtem. for godsakes we saw guys like ray allen, paul pierce, sam cassel, and eddie house, who have never played a lick of defense in their career, play some great defense last year, its because there is a team d concept in place. brook and yi playuyed good defense too. i think this team has great capable athletic defenders. but you can see they are very late on rotations still, and confused. that will be on frank to correct. this will how if hes a good coach or not, cause so far teams have been unable to play defense under him.

beasley isa player. this kid will be roy. he is iuncredible, and he looks comnfident and seasoned. what a -player, hes athletic, he can shoot, can post u up and can drive it with both hands, what a player. he shoud of definitly been the number 1 pick. as fgood as rtose is i dont see him a paul type, maybe a williams type, but still dont know. but beasley is gonna be a bbeast for yrs to come. hell defnilty be a 25ppg career player. hes already better than marion. what a player.

frank has to play his players. hassell has no business playing all these minutes. it just doesnt make sense, neither for him or swift, and theyw ere both awful. guys like anderson , cdr, and swat need the minutes. thats the only way they get better.

if the nest trade swat hell surely pull out a chnadler like he did on the bulls when they traded him for pj brown belive it or not. swat will eventually get it, and when he does, hell be a force. all he needs is consitent playing time. if they trade hi hopfeully they get his true value, which is alot. he has a chance to be the best shot blocker in nba hoiistory, the guy can defend, and he is the most athletic big the nest hacve, and when it comes down to it, the league is a athleitc plauyers league. all the allstars and best players are superior athletes, whetehr with their speed, stregth, leaping ability, or allof them together.

the starting lineup should be

c-lopez-boone
pf-yi-swat-anderson
sf-simmons-hayes or nejara
sg-vc-cdr
pg-harris-dooling

i think all of these 12 players should play. but if they have a gklut of big man, i wouldnt trade yo, brook or sean, sionce they have the most potentyial to be great.

After Yi Jianlian joins the Nets, the Nets have immediately became the popular team in Chinese news website.

For example, after Yi’s debut of this game, the Sina.com.cn produced almost 10 news reports about the Nets.

And in the homepage, the Nets are occupying most part of the layout.

I finally feel great right now, because the Nets were always the small market team in the asia.

I have a clue why Lawrence played Hassell and started him.

Because this lineup needs a solid defense player.

Just like the spurs, they have started Bruce Bowen for many years, and they won many rings.

Bowen is not a good offensive player, but he brings solid or dirty defense.

I think because of the departure of RJ, this team needs a strong guy like Hassell to start to help defending or stick to the strong swingmen like LeBron or Wade.

I like Hassell’s body, he is thick like a small wall, but he just can not shoot the damn ball, that’s really a shame.

I believe this is just a experiment by the coach, he might want to know is it good to put in a bruce-bowen type player in the lineup.

Simmons is solid, but he is not better than RJ offensively or defensively. I don’t know why, but I don’t really like simmons as our starting sf.

Roster moves need to be made, and they need to be made sooner than later. Something will happen, you can bet on it.
It is nice to see so much interest and emotion. I really am excited about the young players, but know that ROD/FRANK are going to play the “veterans” they brought in, because they are proven NBA players, and they know how to win. Again, I wish nobody kept track of wins and losses this year, and concentrated on developing the players with three years or less experience, and Devin. However, I know that is not going to happen, as WINS are the reality goal in the NBA. I guess, because of my advanced age, I am willing to be patient and don’t need my wins “on demand” like everything else in today’s world. I would rather get a good lottery pick, develop the young guys and focus on 2011.

Yi can shoot the ball, but he cannot defend yet. To have great impact and be successful, he has to learn help defense (like JB or the Collins’ trick).

I agree that Yi improving on help defense will be huge

I also agree with the point about Frank experimenting with Hassel in the starting line up. Hassel is horrible offensively but his knack is defense, so i think all of us need to understand that on this team a guy who focuses on defense will get time. I don’t think Hassel should start or get more time than Douglas Roberts but at the same time i think he can be useful as a situational defender. The worst part about this is that if Simmons proves to be garbage on defense, Frank will start Hassel so he can defend the best perimeter player, and i honestly cant go against that logic because Carter should not have to carry the burden of scoring and defending the best player on the other team…..but if you ask me, Hassel’s defense has become suspect.

I wish Yi could defend and play the SF position at a confident level because i think we’d be wicked with a Lopez-Boone-Yi-Carter-Harris starting 5.

@ MINA
they arent going to just release hassell that would have no point at all he still is a decent defender and can still make a jump shot he did good yesterday actually. they should hold onto the contract incase they trade for a guy with a higher salary we need his contract to maybe make it work plus he is a veteran no point in getting rid of a veteran. also players get injured often i guarentee we have atleast a couple of injuries, not everyones going to be healthy the whole year. ager played damn well yesterday in the first half 9pts. hodge has to go though if thats how he plays point! i was so nervous everytime he brought the ball up the court. gill i feel more confident in when he brings the ball up the court. lopez and yi shocked the hell out of me the last 2 minutes of the game they looked like vererans out there i was so happy for them cant wait for the next game 3-0baby

Jerrod,
:)

I was proud of the Nets yesterday. They played hard and encouraged each other. VC was a leader and what’s even better, he has similar personality types on his team. I don’t think there is one hot head on the team. Everybody is looking to grow and improve, which will be easier on him to lead them. I can’t wait till Dooling and Najera get in the games!

@ BWoosley…

sorry to say, but i’d say MOST of that crowd was American, with american heritage in their family who moved to england and wanted to see some game. a minimal of the crowd really was English and just came to see this event. Football, who really is the Worlds Game is, and forever will be their heart and passion. its just too much for the NBA to handle, and the time where football is on, is the time that basketball is being played too lol

Unless, we can get decent compensation for one of our many bigs, why not hold onto them? For years our problem was always never having enough size. We finally have so much depth we don’t know what to do with them all. Well I like having this problem, rather, than worrying about how we would match up to bigger teams in the PLAYOFFS!…. and yes I said playoffs!
