Nets Follow Script for Another Win

Fall behind by double-digits in the first half? Check. Cut the lead down by halftime? Check. Take the lead in the third? Check. Fail to put the opponent away and hold on for a narrow victory? Check. Triple-double from Kidd? Check. Twenty-plus from Carter and Jefferson? Check. It's a familiar formula and it resulted in the Nets' fifth straight victory, as they took care of the Hawks in Atlanta Saturday night. In addition, Josh Boone recorded his third career double-double and Boki Nachbar seemed to find his stroke, hitting 6-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-6 from downtown, for 16 points. Malik Allen sat out with a sore back and Jamaal Magloire was not with the team due to personal reasons. Meanwhile, Richard Jefferson insists it was only a "tweak" when he fell oddly on his knee.

great game from kidd carter boone a nachbar. jefferson came along after struggling and sean did great to. only thing we have to work at doing is not to go down by double figures and when we have a double digit lead not to lose it all the time. we got lucky we didnt lose it at the end

would like it if we came out of the gates with more energy but ill take a win were gunna run ourselfs down trying to make these come backs all the time we have to lead the league with double digits come backs

It’s a damn shame if VC is left off the all-star game. He has been short of spectacular in all of our 16 wins.(keep your head up VC, you da man)

Kidd’s Triple double and Boone’s double double were fantastic tonite.

Yeah darnit, we are rolling, rolling, rollin’.

VC was fabulous as usually. Armstrong, RJ has had better games. What’s up with RJ yall? Kidd was Kidd as uasual. SWill had some good moments and Boone was HUGE once again. Where was Malik?

it feels good to finally see a front court that can produce, once krstic is in sync and healthy watch out.

@ Kinney

I agree with you about VC. However; I’m hoping that rest will do him good down the stretch. I know I sound selfish but VC has had numerous of all-star games. He has nothing else to prove to us fans.

by Danylin on Jan 5, 2008 10:42 PM EST reply actions

actually there was a change in the formula, one that provide us with optimism, there were more plays run to get the ball inside the post to Boone and Williams who responded with 32 points….the Nets are no longer a perimeter only team!

also, it looks like they learned from the Pistons…they are really stepping up the pressure after half time….they are not quite the Pistons yet because it seems like they have a tendency to play out of control when they have the other team on its heels and thus the closer than necessary finishes…go Nets

9-5 on the road. Not too shabby. Don’t look behind you Boston, because there’s a Mack truck with NJ plates that’s about to run you over!!! LOL

DANYLIN:

I respectfully disagree with you about VC’s all star situation. Players in this league are respected about the number of times you make the allstar team. VC does NOT want to go home or on vacation. He’d rather be in New Orleans with the big dawgs. (bark)

by kinney on Jan 5, 2008 11:25 PM EST reply actions

9-5 on the road is damn good. So is 7 out of our last 8.

AWESOME game today. I seriously had a smile on my face through that second half.

Kidd and Boone and Sean were ELECTRIC. And Vince and Boki and everyone were icing on the cake.

The big 3 was big…even tho i didn;t like RJ at all…however he made some big plays and played good D…anywayz I give all the credit to SWill and Boone… 32 points from the paint…THATS HUGE!!! HUGE!!! Teams can’t just double team VC and RJ now they have to pay…Boki was big too…darell played sick D again missed some lay ups but played good D…Marcus needs to step up…

@ Danylin is right.

Vince has been in plenty of all-star games. Everybody knows he’s a Superstar.

Excellent win. My old coach would call this a ‘Quality performance’.

Nets shot 48% from the field, and, an impressive 50% from the 3-pt line.

All starters scored in double figures : JK – 10, VC – 29, RJ – 21, JB – 17, SW – 15.

Nachbar regained his shooting touch – 16 pts. off the bench.

They have now won 7 out of their last games. All this w/out their starting Center (Kristic).

Nets are on a roll!

by NetKnic on Jan 5, 2008 11:37 PM EST reply actions

How about VC down the stretch with clutch baskets in the fourth to lead every recent win? Again in the fourth tonight, and in that last minute.

Another tripe double for Kidd, but more importantly he has played awesome defense lately. Taking charges, shutting down the opponents best players, even with a height disadvantage.

Boone continues to blossom.

We are beating decent teams 1 real good team was orlando….but we have to start beating more quality teams for me to get my hopes up..
We have to stop playing sloppy. lawernce has got to realize we got the scoring power. we have to practice what detroit and boston are already good at, protecting the ball and defense. Once we get better at that we are in good shape . For now on every team we play now should be like a test and boston and detroit are the final exams

(Practice protecting the ball and pressure defense that’s the key)

by mike2red elizabeth on Jan 6, 2008 1:09 AM EST reply actions

Once again we almost blow it but RJs pass to Boone saved it. I honestly think he did not get the dunk off in time but hey I’ll take it. The next 3 games are must wins for us so keep up the good work guys…
Btw, Magloire didn’t play because of “personal reasons.” Wow, talk about someone who use to have enough skill to be an All-Star player and is now a complete scrub. Boone is turning into the man but I just hope he doesn’t get a Twin-like contract from us.

by Kris on Jan 6, 2008 1:11 AM EST reply actions

81 minutes of basketball for Kidd the past 2 nights. They have to lower this.

by kevin on Jan 6, 2008 1:52 AM EST reply actions

Another so-so win against a team they should’ve put away much earlier. I’ll definitely take it, but for once I’d like to see them rest their starters in the 4th quarter, especially on a back-to-back. The big 3 are playing heavy minutes, and this doesn’t bode well as the season grinds on. To Kidd’s credit, he still looks pretty fresh out there, getting another triple double, but I’m sure he can use the extra rest at his age.

A few things I noticed. There were significantly more post plays for Sean and Josh in this game. Sean especially, showed a nice array of moves with his back to the basket. A baseline fadeaway, a left-handed hook shot. He has the potential to be a legitimate low post threat if he continues to develop his game.

This was the main point regarding the Nets offense that I wanted to see addressed and it looks like they’ve made some progress. Having Sean and Josh score down low opens up the entire offense. As we saw this game, the Nets shot a terrific percentage from 3, and they got the Hawks big men in foul trouble, limiting their effectiveness. If they continue this, the Nets will be on their way towards becoming an elite team. Kudos to Lawrence Frank for showing confidence in Sean and Josh and for making the necessary adjustments to the offense.

Twin should not have been out on the floor against a team like the Hawks. They’re an athletic team and he doesn’t match up well against those type of players. He wasn’t effective when he was on the floor and the Hawks almost turned it into a blowout before he was subbed out. He should’ve gotten a DNP CD tonight. Frank should know better than that. To his credit though, he made the necessary in-game adjustment and didn’t put Twin back in. This is another area where he’s improved his coaching considerably.

Sean should’ve been out on the floor more in the 4th quarter. 24 minutes a game is just too little playing time for him. He was not in foul trouble (only 1 foul), he was playing very well (15 points), and he matches up very well with the Hawks athleticism. The impact he has on the game just by being on the floor is huge. Teams are more reluctant to drive into the paint due to his shot blocking ability. He alters a lot of shots besides the ones he blocks. Frank should realize that he needs to gain experience playing in pressure situations. It will pay dividends later on in the season.

The Nets are finally above .500 now and playing their best ball of the season. It’s not a coincidence that all this happened after Sean and Josh were put in the starting lineup. The next two games against the Bobcats and the Sonics should be wins and blowout wins preferably. Then they’ll get a chance to see where they stand amongst the elite teams in the NBA when they face the Celtics and the Blazers. I’m not sure they’re quite at that level yet, but the good news is that they’re still improving and Krstic has yet to recover. The next few games should be very interesting.

VC is everything…………man right now he is really one of the best players in the league again

passing, rebounding, scoring at will…………he is a true superstar

the only thing I really have to complain about is RJ- I know he isnt 100% but he has to find VC more often, too many times he is ignoring him

however, RJ+VC are really one of the most dangerous combos in the league…………Kidd was kidd and the NETS are on a roll baby ;-)

by dadi on Jan 6, 2008 7:25 AM EST reply actions

I agree with Jonathan. First, I don’t know why Williams was taken out at the end of the 4rth when his defensive presence seemed to be a key factor and when he was taken out, the Hawks almost won. Saying that, it was a great win and Boone was getting big rebounds.

by Sean Serritella on Jan 6, 2008 8:19 AM EST reply actions

i think jason kidd should keep the mustache untill we lose again and 81 min isnt to much kevin who cares he’s playing better then ever right now

by Ben on Jan 6, 2008 8:26 AM EST reply actions

Liked the play of Boone & S. Williams. They are starting to score points. Keep posting them up. Kidd and Carter were great. Nice game from Nachbar.

Lots of mistakes by Jefferson again – he really doesn’t use his head sometimes. He got bailed out by the refs on more than one occasion trying to force things.

This falling behind early and then catching up has got to stop. It forces Kidd and Carter to absorb too many minutes. They’ll be done by the playoffs.

by halwas on Jan 6, 2008 10:56 AM EST reply actions

Nice game but bad coaching from Frank taking out Sean W for Nachbar. It just messed up the flow of the game. They were ahead by at least 10 points when he was taken out. I know Nachbar did good on first half but that was needed then when we are trailing by as much as 14 points. But when we are ahead , I don’t see why that’s need to be done. You don’t need Nachbar there anymore the five are working fine. So Frank you almost blew it up. Well anyway Carter and Jefferson and Kidd did enough damaged to preserve the win. As the old saying if it’s working don’t fix it , Frank, this time you are overanalyzing it.
This new first five have a Center(boone) , a new power forward (Sean W), , a small forward )Jefferson. A shooting guard (Carter) and a point guard. Nachbar is a small forward, the offense was working because of the balance , you overloaded the small forward, nobody will get offensive rebound and Nachbar is not good in defense. Come on Frank, don’t mess it up, that’s why you don’t build leads, this what will frustrate your player, playing hard but ineffective, because you yourself create imbalance.

by JuliusIrving on Jan 6, 2008 12:41 PM EST reply actions

Definitely gotta stop falling behind early before we hit that Celtic game or we’re getting blown out.

I think the vast majority of the Nets wins this season will be from close games because of 1 reason…FT shooting. You cant blow teams out when you miss 10-15FTs a game. If the Nets hit their free throws a few of these games couldve been at 20 point leads in the 4th qtr instead of just 5-10. Close games give teams energy because they still feel like they can win which is why the Nets have to fight to close out every game.

Also, I still see a lot of people saying wait until Krstic comes back. Honestly, I dont see Nenad making a big contribution this year. We finally have our team playing like they belong in the NBA and I dont see him just coming in and making a huge impact. If anything, it may disrupt what we already have going so he may have to play from the bench this year in limited minutes. I think next year (if we hold on to him) is more likely the time he’d give us his true contributions.

by TheMann on Jan 6, 2008 1:25 PM EST reply actions

All wins are good but with Carter, Kidd, and Jefferson logging so many minutes it doesn’t bode well for the long haul. M. Williams need to get more minutes.

P.S. I still think L.Frank is clueless.

by Eugene on Jan 6, 2008 1:59 PM EST reply actions

I think L Frank did an overall good job…I mean he did a lot of defensive changes in the half time and its great but the reason we get down early i think is because of bad game preporation…like his first game plan is bad or something however his adjustments are good so w/e…however to win on consistent basis u need both…I think we need wright…cuz he provides a lot of good D…and some driving to the basket…

by LeoN on Jan 6, 2008 2:32 PM EST reply actions

Krstic will still help us if he’s anything like the player he was last year. To me, we haven’t improved yet because were winning against crappy team, except for the Magic. And none were very convincing. If we’ve definitely improved, then we should be able to go 11-2 the rest of the month (losses coming from Celtics and Suns).

Krstic will only help us, he will not disrupt anything.

by kevin on Jan 6, 2008 4:10 PM EST reply actions

Actually that last win was very good we would have blown them out, if we didn’t get carried away with the highlights.(Im not trying to encourage that stupidity- trying to show off),

and whats up with the free throws Everyone is missing them. The Nets should have to make 10 in a row each, before any one can leave practice.

the minutes are fine you guys. These are fully grown men, They have been in the league for years, you can tell that when you are young you start die down a little right around this time- Dwight, Lebron, Rudy Gay…ect, but it’s opposite for vets, EX Kobe, started having 50 point games around this time last year.

by jerrod on Jan 6, 2008 5:50 PM EST reply actions

I remember the first month when the Nets were shooting about 80% from free throws. That was when Carter and RJ made/attempted most of the teams free throws. Now that the bigs are getting to the line, were getting worse as a team.

The minutes are fine? Kidd/Carter both average 38 min while RJ gets 39. That’s about what they had the past couple of years, then their all out of steam come playoff time. Lower it to 35 or less and give the bench more minutes.

by kevin on Jan 6, 2008 6:33 PM EST reply actions

thats a 3 minute difference, besides, it doesn’t look like New Jersey does much conditioning during practice based off of the way the players look, and run. So they can’t be tired.

by jerrod on Jan 6, 2008 8:54 PM EST reply actions

Not now, but sooner or later, if they keep this up. I just don’t want fatigue being a factor in the playoffs. I checked some other players from the teams that always go far in the playoffs, and I realized none of them average more than 35 minutes during the season. So I’m guessing it has a factor come playoff time.

by kevin on Jan 6, 2008 11:10 PM EST reply actions

great win but my only beef is why did collins come in the game. frank has to be able to evaluate the situation correctly. the nets were doing fine until collins came in and then next thing you know it they’re down 14. collins should be only used in certain matchups(very big guys ex: shaq, yao). the hawks possess way too much athleticism for colljns. and also with collins on it disrupted the offensive flow of the nets. they went back to 4 on 5, hence they couldnt score with him on the floor.

the next problem was when the nets were leading by 10 or 12 with 3 min left. frank has to be able to make the right subs. whats the reason to have the offensive unit on with nachbar at that time. with nachbar the nets score, but are below average defending and rebounding especially when he subs in for one of the bigs. up 10 the hawks mounted a furios comeback. yes the nets were sloppy with many turnovers, but the hawks were getting whatever they wnted towwrds the rim. when the nets are in this situation up 10 with a few minutes left, frank has to play his two young bigs. guaranteed if swill was on instead of nachbar the hawks dont make that type of run to cut it to 2. with swill on the opponents have an extremely hard time scoring in the paint in the halfcourt set.

the nets have definitley improved but now they need to tighten up. as in dont go down by double digits early and dont give up a double digit lead late. what would help if is frank made the correct subs to have the right players in in the right situations.

frank has made strides and has shown that even if he is mistake prone that once he notices it(which could take several games) he usually fixes it.

peace out
