Players: Vince is an Underachiever

In an Sports Illustrated poll of 242 NBA players asking them "Which player gets the least out of the most talent?", Vince Carter finished fourth with six percent of the vote (approximately 15 players). Finishing above Carter were the Lakers' Kwame Brown, the Clippers' Tim Thomas and the Knicks' Eddy Curry. Meanwhile, Carter is disappointed in himself for the way he has played over the last few games.

out of the 15 or so players… how many do you want to bet play for the Nets… 10…11?

Hopefully this puts back the fire in Vince.

career averages of 24/5/4………….what an underachiever

LOL

by dadi on Jan 17, 2008 3:17 PM EST reply actions

If you’ve watched this coward play the last two weeks and don’t agree with this assessment, you are on DRUGS. I don’t see how his peers dissing him will light a fire under his overpaid behind…this guy DOGGED IT on purpose against two of the top teams in the league in back to backs.

Man, what a bad rap to have among your fellow players. Who would know better though? Is it the statement that he made about not playing hard in Toronto every night, is it the fact that it seems so effortless when he takes those 25’ fadeaways, or is it that the other players just know that he only brings it occassionally?

by PA Net on Jan 17, 2008 4:08 PM EST reply actions

wow, 15 whole players! who cares

by rich on Jan 17, 2008 4:17 PM EST reply actions

Seriously, has anyone ever thought about maybe he didn’t WANT to be compared to MJ, etc…? This guy has consistently put up 25/5/5 each year. Injuries have hampered his career a bit, but overall he’s been a great player. One of the dominant scorers over the past 10 years. The media tends to take advantage of the “good, soft-spoken” athletes in professional sports and it makes me sick. These guys should be the ones many kids should be looking up to, not the selfish thugs who flood the NBA yearly and set bad examples for many kids these days.

A career 25/5/5 guy is working too hard to give RJ opportunities to earn his first ASG appearance….. he’ll be back after that, whether RJ in or not.

by wh on Jan 17, 2008 6:05 PM EST reply actions

@GEO

once again you showed the world that you know NOTHING about this sport

VC is a future HOF……………..so what an underachiever can he be!?!?!

24/5/4 for his career, 9 season with 20+ ppg…………..what are you all talking about!?!?

by dadi on Jan 17, 2008 6:15 PM EST reply actions

what an unachiever? Out of those 242 players surveyed they should go to youtube and type in Vince Carter and see who has the most replies. Jealousy prehaps. I think Vince average 24 or 25 pts for his career. UNDER/ACHIEVER??

by Runnin' on Jan 17, 2008 7:27 PM EST reply actions

@G-Money

You hit the nail on the head. I betcha the guys that were surveyed are the thuggish guys in the league. The ones that have a lot of out of wedlock children like one of his teammate.(shhh!) I became a Carter fan immediately after reading how he took up "Africian American studies in College.

by Runnin' on Jan 17, 2008 7:33 PM EST reply actions

VC is an underacheiver. A guy who’s averaged 24/5/4, and never make a conference final? Yea, he’s underacheiving. I thought when he got here, he would have the mentality to go to the nba finals, but no. First round exit, and two second round exits. Last year was the worst, when he FUMBLED the ball to end our season.

by kevin on Jan 17, 2008 8:03 PM EST reply actions

I don’t wholeheartedly agree with this assement, 24/5/6 man those are some incredible numbers…

by John on Jan 17, 2008 8:17 PM EST reply actions

I’ve asked the following questions to a lot of people who know basketball and the answers are always the same…

Who has more talent, Vince Carter or Dwyane Wade?

Answer: Carter, by far

Who’s a better player, Carter or Wade?

A: Wade, by far

Its that simple

Carter has more talent than anybody but Lebron and maybr Kobe, but it goes to waste most of the time. Wade is so much more aggressive it isn’t even funny. If vince made the most of his talent, he’d be an mvp canidate every year and the nets would be much better than 18-20.

by punisher on Jan 17, 2008 8:21 PM EST reply actions

here we go again! VC is and always will be my favorite player of all time. I’m oldschool with a lot of intelligence about this game.

VC and T-Mac have been criticized their whole career by outide and inside sources. First the media tried to make VC become the next Jordan. We all know that there’s only one MJ. Being from Chicago I used to hear MJ bash VC because at the time VC was getting a lot of attention and commericals.

I have said this once and I’ll say it again, VC is a finesse and sometime passive player. His upbringing was not like most of his peers. His parents were educators and he didn’t run the streets like an AI, JKidd, Steven Jackson, Ron Artest, Jason Williams, etc. He has no tattoos, dangling earrings etc. He is a mannerable, quiet, fun, likeable guy. The media build you up just to bring you down. I will always be a VC fan for life. VC and George Gervin are my favorite two players of all time.

Keep your chin up VC. You da man and don’t you ever forget that. We will cheer you on until you get into the Hall OF FAME.

Haters stop drinking hatorade…hehehehehehe!

by Kinney on Jan 17, 2008 8:35 PM EST reply actions

@ Kinney
I agree with everything you said, except for the Hall of Fame part. I mean, what has he really accomplished in his career? 1st place in the dunk contest and a gold medal. 8 All-star appearances, rookie of the year, 2 time all-nba. That’s not really going to get you in the Hall of Fame.

by kevin on Jan 17, 2008 8:52 PM EST reply actions

@ Kinney

It’s great that he’s a nice guy. I appreciate that. I’d rather have him on the nets than not.

but he has soooooo much talent and he hasn’t lived up to it consistently (he has had some incredible games and some incredible runs). I just wish he could go on a tear when it counts like wade did in ’06, because he has that same ability to dominate.

by punisher on Jan 17, 2008 9:01 PM EST reply actions

I read where they said George Gervin did drugs. What a bad example for us youngens.
Vince is a great role model. Do you agree?

by Runnin' on Jan 17, 2008 9:18 PM EST reply actions

Some fans here if i can call them fans are in drugs or they are bs me … Do you guys realize that we have to players that do the same thing , do u see when rj scores 30 carter have 14 when vc have 30 he have 14 this obviosly the problem nr 1… second problem LF gives JK to much time on the bench FRANK you idiot he is 35 almost its like old car you live to cool off and than you cant tuned on … How can u run offence thru Rj are u dumm he cant jump he runs like a duck , he throws the ball over the rim and it wont touch the rim are u blind , he try to get contact so the refs can call foul but he dont know how to sell it cose they learned that joke .. TRADE THAT JACK*** and those garbage that u have in the bench .. When i think the adjustment that he was trying to make last night oputin collins (he is just like colum of concreate ) on ZR and boone on cury uffffff u kidding us FRANk , pack u r bags and take Colins , Cat, AW,MA, Anderson , the coaching stuff bc i belive all this flying tickets are ready they just w8ing for verification from KIKI … When it comes to Rod he dont give a **** for NJ fans he dreams Brooklyn .. @ Kevin

Oh you are the biggest VC basher alive. Are u from Toronto/or Raptor fan? Hehe! Oh yes he is a hall of famer. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT.

@ punisher
I have never seen your s/n before. I think most of you are the same person with different s/n. hehe! I have been around 47 years.

Yes he is a good guy no doubt but he also has stats that back him up. He has a huge following of fans and haters(so u know he has made it HUGE) Show me a 25 pt career average 5 assists and 5 rebounds player that isn’t in the hall of fame. I’ve asked a hard thing of you. You can’t find any…hehehehehehehe!

by Kinney on Jan 17, 2008 9:34 PM EST reply actions

@ Ray
Okay a bunch of things I have to disagree with you. One, Carter and RJ are two completely different players, I have no idea where you’re getting that Carter and RJ are the same. Second, Kidd plays about 38 minutes a game. He’s getting TOO MUCH playing time. Like you said, he’s 35 years old. Third, RJ can’t jump? Are you kidding me? And he runs like a duck? So what does that make Carter? A turtle? RJ is our fastest player. He doesn’t know how to sell fouls? Is that why he averages about 10 free throws a game? 4 more than Carter. And over an 82 game season, thats about 330 more free throws than Carter. What garbage on the bench? Half those guys can actually play. Rod is thinking about Brooklyn? That’s where you’re way way off. If he’s thinking about Brooklyn, then he should trade the big three and start over. But no, he’s always looking for help now, not later.

Wow dude.

Kiki V was brought in by Thorne. I heard he is a salary expert or expert in dumping salaries. So it this losing continues, it won’t be long. I have a feeling they gonna have a firesale.

by edd on Jan 17, 2008 9:54 PM EST reply actions

been reading this site forever, but just posted today because I totally agree that vince is an underachiever.

I like him and I think he’s extremely talented, but man he frustrates me so much sometimes with his lack of fire and lack of aggressiveness.

He’s probably on the fringe of going to the hall of fame, but my guess is that he’ll miss out because of his damaged rep.

by punisher on Jan 17, 2008 9:59 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think that Vince is a winner. He just doesn’t have “it,” whereas other players do. He doesn’t take his team over the top and he’s not the difference maker, he just fits in. I was hoping for a difference maker when the Nets got him but I’m still waiting. I know there are a lot of Net fans because of Carter and they love him and his jersey is the 7th best seller in the league so matter what you say to Carter fans, it will fall on deaf ears. If Carter had Kidd’s mentality, he’d be just as good as Jordan.

by Sean Serritella on Jan 17, 2008 10:04 PM EST reply actions

Carter’s biggest problem is that he’s to laid back. So I don’t think he actually cares what those players think. He should’ve been born with an ego problem like Kobe, Shaq etc.

by Jay on Jan 17, 2008 10:09 PM EST reply actions

Here we go again, why must we consistently bash our own players. I over arguing whether or not he is our franchise player. I could care less who is. But I know for a fact that Vince is a Net, so I support him. Everyone should be mad at the league for reporting this.

by Jerrod on Jan 17, 2008 10:37 PM EST reply actions

@ Kinney
So your basing a hall of famer because of stats? How about Kidd? 14/6/9 and he’s going into the hall of fame. Stats don’t mean anything. It’s what you did for your career and frankly, Carter hasn’t done much.

http://www.hoophall.com/halloffamers/bhof-halloffamers-alpha.html

Look at the people on that list. These are the best of the best. They’ve done a lot more in their career than Carter has. I’m not hating on Carter, I’m just saying the Hall of Fame is saved for the best, Carter’s not there yet. Especially since he has a history of not showing up to play. Do you really think people will put a player in the hall of fame if a player has a history of not playing at their best most of the time?

by kevin on Jan 17, 2008 11:25 PM EST reply actions

kevin carter is the bets scorer in nets history, what does that tell you. you base your judgement over one play he made in last year’s playoffs. what about the playoffs before that or the year before that, or the year where he was one shot away from the east finals.

and by the way this nets team is by far the most talented nets team in history. the problem is frank, who doesnt know how to coach or communicate. the nets team of the finals were lucky, the east was pathetic then. the same team with frank coaching it doesnt make the playoffs. this team with a real head coach can beat any team.

thorn has done his job assembling a roster that can compete. in the 05-06 season the nets were elite. they had a much lesser talented roster than they have now. they had no bench at all and they had collins mr.0-0-0 -15 statline of the night in the starting lineup.

this team is very good talent wise, its just frank doesnt know how to coach nba level. the past 3 years injuries kidd and carter have given him a chance, it covered his ineptitude, but whether its injuries or the play of kidd and carter, it could only carry him for so long. frank’s true abilities are showing. i love it when they say frank gets this team to fight through adversity, they shouldnt be in these situatuins in the first place. its because of fran there are in thses awful situations in the first place. he’s definitly not a credible nba coach.

As a person who played basketball at the collegiate level I can tell you that passion and skill is what makes a b-ball player a great player. VC LOOKS like he lacks passion at times or does not have his head in the game. I don’t think it’s something he does on purpose, look at last year both Carter and J-Kidd were going through divorces Carter had spells where he looked out of it Kidd was killing during his personal mess. Talented or not, if you can’t focus you’re not going to play well and that’s something I always wondered about him, where is is head and heart sometimes I really don’t know! He could be playing ball because he likes it and the moneys good, but not cause he LOVES it or just be a person who doesn’t have that KG passion for ball. Either way, some of you “fans” take it too far you pay to be entertained. At the end of the game it should be over but you call the man punks and all other kind of stuff when he’s human just like you. I have been reading this site for a while and just posted yesterday. I wonder how many of you all have played ball on a high level because a lot of you are too critical and I wonder if you’ve actually laced up a pair of sneaks. If you played at that level through aches, pains and personal crisis then maybe you have a right, but most of you are just spectactors. DOesn’t mean you don’t have a point, but dang you guys are brutal!

by KayBee on Jan 18, 2008 9:53 AM EST reply actions

Okay I’ll prove why VC doesn’t belong in the hall of fame until he gets his act together. His rebounding and assists have been consistent all throughout his career, but he’s known for being an offensive force, so I’m going to concentrate on his scoring:

Rookie year up until today:
18, 25, 27, 24, 20, 22, 15!!!, 27, 24, 25, 21

It’s like watching the ocean, high tide, low tide. He’s going down. If you look at the great scorers of all-time, they go up and they stay up until they hit the end of their careers. VC IS INCONSISTENT!!! I mean, he would have a career scoring average of 27 by now, but no, he has a history of NOT SHOWING UP TO PLAY.

@ Mina
Collin’s stat line for the 05-06 season wasn’t 0-0-0, it was 4-5-1. One of his better years for us, his best was the season before when he had 6-6-1. It doesn’t really stand out but those were Varejao’s stats when you guys were willing to pay him $8 million a year.

by kevin on Jan 18, 2008 10:40 AM EST reply actions

Kevin you need a hug. Why do you use all of your time downing a nice guy like Carter.? Everytime I click on this website, you are criticizing him. I’m not the biggest Carter fan but he does not deserves this kind of hatred toward him. Let’s take an inhale and exhale slowly. Geesh!

by MJT on Jan 18, 2008 1:01 PM EST reply actions

@ MJT
I’m not hating on Carter for the ****** last time. I’m just proving a point that he’s not as good as people think he is. Sure he’s a nice guy, and he has all the talent in the world, but he doesn’t show it. That’s the problem. Did any of the other hall of famers take nights off?

by kevin on Jan 18, 2008 2:50 PM EST reply actions

Kaybee is right. I play ball too. Until you actually play the game you can not criticize a person. The money. that means nothing to him. He is already a millionare. Motivation. That’s what Carter needs, whether that be a ring, a girl, or whatever, it is up to your coach to motivate his players.
