Nets Come Up Empty Against Blazers

Any positives that have come over the last few weeks were erased Monday night as the Nets were embarrassed by the Blazers at the IZOD Center. The Nets trailed from start to finish, never showed any energy and never got anything going offensively. Jason Kidd, Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson combined to shoot 7-for-33 (21 percent) from the field and their teammates weren't much better. Portland didn't get a big game from Brandon Roy, but they didn't need it. Five Blazers scored in double-figures. Malik Allen was the lone bright spot for the Nets, leading his team with 17 points and eight boards.

Portland didn’t miss and they are a team on fire. The Nets are a mess. I don’t know what to say.

by Sean Serritella on Jan 14, 2008 11:49 PM EST reply actions

who cares about eddie jordan??? he left the team 5 years ago get over it. honestly tho, they couldn’t have lacked more energy tonight. this team needs a shooter bad. i think its time thorn makes a move. he’s been sitting on his laurels long enough. we need a shooter and a low post scorer. work those phones please!!!! i’d try something with memphis. that team sucks and they have some good players. mike miller and pau gasol would look awfully nice in nets uniform.

by Sly Dave on Jan 14, 2008 11:56 PM EST reply actions

the big three sucked so bad it wasn’t even funny i couldn’t stomach watching all 3 play tonight…and wtf is with the trapping and double teaming everyone does frank ever stop and think wow thats maybe why that always had wide open 3’s frank is retarded

This Better Be The Last Time That Malik Allen Leads Us In Scoring. Thats All I Have To Say

by Ben on Jan 15, 2008 12:25 AM EST reply actions

We came out with no fire tonight. I sat right behind the Blazers bench and everyone had energy and was focused. On the other hand, the Nets were about as motivating as an open jump shot by Twin. Everyone was slumping and could not hit a shot. The only time where I thought things were going to turn around was the beginning of the 3rd. After that it was over.
When is Sean going to learn to stay away from fouls? 1:48 seconds in was his first foul. He has to learn to be more patient and that a block always isn’t that answer.
Just an off night. This is definitely an earned L. It was over in the opening minutes with LaMarcus schooling us.
I asked Keke tonight before the game if he sees a possible trade happening before the deadline and he said it takes two to tango so obviously no one is interested in our talented roster. Just another game at the wonderful Meadowlands folks.

Fire Frank & Demote Thorn !!!!

by 732_Franchise on Jan 15, 2008 1:10 AM EST reply actions

This team is a complete joke, no energy and the same sad story EVERY night out. The only wins they get are squeaked out by 5 points or fewer. Firing Frank is a step in the right direction but I’m in favor of trading one of the big 3 now.(more like the mediocre 3)

by Brett on Jan 15, 2008 1:27 AM EST reply actions

Pathetic. Come on Thorn, something, anything. We need too much to do nothing. I personally have seen enough of the big three to know even with Krstic healthy they will not be contenders.

by geo on Jan 15, 2008 6:54 AM EST reply actions

Carter is suppose to be the one to put points up on the board. Instead, he wants to be like Kidd passing the ball even if he is free. Screaming everytime he goes into the paint asking for foul shots. What a fraud. Didn’t the Nets studied him when he was in Toronto, how he plays after getting a big contract? This Nets management is suppose to be smart instead they had been conned by a fraud already known by the whole world.

by edd on Jan 15, 2008 7:22 AM EST reply actions

in this team, they are terrible. You could see in the 1st five minutes that this passionless bunch of veterans threw in the towel and didn’t feel like competing. It’s obvious now that something has to change, for whatever reason this lazy and conveniently competitive team needs to be broken up. The parts don’t fit, we have no shooters, Boki is shooting like 20% for the season. I’m glad I didn’t trek done to the meadowlands for this crap.

by Stick a fork on Jan 15, 2008 8:14 AM EST reply actions

When 3 veterans earning over $50 million among them play that badly, it can’t be the coach’s fault. I think they might have seen a zone before and might have heard how to attack it. Why is it that teams like the Bobcats (JRich) and the Blazers (Roy) have wings who can rise up 20 feet away and knock down jumpers even if they are being guarded, while our $50 million trio doesn’t even try when there is a man within arm’s reach of them? I understand open shots are better but at some point as you’re falling behind and passing it around isn’t working the guys who are getting paid the big bucks have to step up in the half court game and get the job done. Instead, they seem like they have concrete shoes.

I’m a STH but if they’re not going to show up mentally, I don’t see why I should bother to show up physically.

by Mt57 on Jan 15, 2008 9:28 AM EST reply actions

Aren’t you guys forgetting something very important? This is a Blazers team that has won 18 of 20 against quality teams.

@ kazo
Your the second person to see what I see in Carter. Can I get a third and fourth person? Carter needs to learn his place on this team. Leave the play making to Kidd and start scoring!!! I don’t care if he has to hog the ball, start scoring old man!!!

by kevin on Jan 15, 2008 9:47 AM EST reply actions

Team needs another scorer.

Kidd is not a scorer.
You’ve basically got two scorers – Jefferson & Carter.
And they are both inconsistent – especially Jefferson.
Nachbar is inconsistent.
Wright is inconsistent.
Allen is inconsistent.

That’s why the whole team is inconsistent.

And you’ve got $10 million worth of of dead wood on the bench (Collins/Magliore) that cannot be traded because no one wants them.

What a mess.
Good luck Kiki – you’ll need it.

by halwas on Jan 15, 2008 10:21 AM EST reply actions

I think we’ve seen enough. This team isn’t doing anything this season or next, carter has refused to play basketball for 4 games in a row now. We can blame Frank all we want but frank made the right decisions to put a spark in this team and all of a sudden Carter reverts into a shell of his former self, takes everything that they built up during the last two three weeks and flushes right down the toilet and you can tell he doesn’t give two craps about it. Rod Thorn may have made the worst in his tenure by signing this con artist to an extension. We should have let him walk or S and T’d him to the Magic…

trade Kidd to a contender, trade Carter to whatever team stupid enough to take him, and lets build a new squad out of RJ, Sean, Josh, and Nenad.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 15, 2008 10:26 AM EST reply actions

This was definitely the game where I think everyone realized this team is going nowhere. They don’t defend consistently, they don’t play with passion or cohesion and are a poor jump shooting team. I’m so tired of hearing both RJ and Carter scream every single time they drive to the hole. Those are the echoes heard throughout the Izod Center of overpaid, whiny stars waiting for the ref bailout, and not sticking their heads down and playing hard they way other NBA wing players do. Really, in the end, the team is just not all that fun to watch, and I’m in favor of dumping both Kidd and Carter and moving on.

@ Sly Dave:

Net fans will get over the loss of Eddie Jordan when the TEAM gets over the loss of Eddie Jordan. Even those players who weren’t here in ‘01 -’03 – such as Carter – are clearly missing the presence of a REAL head coach like Jordan. I’ll even take Byron Scott back in a heartbeat. As Vince said before the game yesterday when asked why the young and inexperienced Trailblazers have been so successful: “because their players are buying what their head coach is selling”. If that wasn’t a backhanded slap at Frank, nothing is!!!

by newark hawk on Jan 15, 2008 10:55 AM EST reply actions

Jefferson head was stucked up his rear all game. VC head was half stucked. Kidd head was stucked up there too.

Everytime horse mouth Jefferson complain and makes statements about his team peformances(Boston game) it backfires on him…Shut up Jefferson and play ball.

by Danylin on Jan 15, 2008 11:20 AM EST reply actions

I agree, its obvious nothings comeing anytime soon. I think with so much talent underachieving so long, that one must take a hard look at the coach. The offense looks confused, disorganized, and really bad. The Defense looks uninspired and defeated.

I truly believe, and experienced coach with a real system could make this team go far.

That being said, I also agree its not only the coaches fault. The whole team stunk yesturday except MA. I think the players are not only NOT buying what Frank sells, but theyre starting to realize the teams not going anywhere with him. I think thats why weve seen a lack in motivation lately.

The real painfull thing is, I dont think a trade will help right now, cause we have a coach who doesnt know how to sub, change his game plan, and adapt, or how to use his players.

And the painful thing is you know Frank is safe…

I love these players, and its sad to see them play like this. Do something. Now. I dont intend to keep staying up late to watch this crap.

Break up the (not so) Big Three for payroll flexibility. Get back some draft picks for young studs for youth movement.

by CO Nets fan on Jan 15, 2008 11:45 AM EST reply actions

@ Danylin
Carter needs to start playing too. You have RJ and Kidd “stuck” and Carter “half-stuck”, when only Carter has been playing bad for the past 4 games. At least Kidd and RJ came to play the 3 games before the Blazers. Stop with your love for Carter. It’s practically the same as Frank being in love with Collins. I can uderstand if you still like him when he actually plays, but he hasn’t recently.

by kevin on Jan 15, 2008 12:07 PM EST reply actions

The whole team sucked last night in my opinion. Who told RJ that he should have more shot attempts than Carter? I think that Frank is the blame of this whole hoopla. Did you guys see that Kidd had 13 shot attempts? and Carter had only 9 ?.

We need to see more Jason Collins..lol

We want JC.

Anyone who wants to “BLOW IT UP” has a very short memory. All you have to do is look at the PRE-KIDD HISTORY of this franchise to see what will happen. Or just look across the river at the MESS ON 33RD STREET.

IF we can upgrade immediately with a trade, I’m all for it! But I KNOW we can upgrade immediately with a NEW HEAD COACH – Rick Carlisle, Mark Jackson or Mario Elie to name a few.

As long as Frank is the head coach, any trades – unless they’re out and out steals – are just rearranging the deck chairs on the ‘Titanic’.

by newark hawk on Jan 15, 2008 1:12 PM EST reply actions

The Nets are a good team who are still finding themselves and their motivation. 2 years ago when we had a healthy Curly, things were pretty good, anyone else remember the 14 game win streak (longest of any team that season)?

A shooter would be good but what we really need is a consistant low post scorer, curly was good at doing that. If he makes it back to form, the Nets will get better shots, shoot better, and go on a last season run like they’ve done every year Kidd was at the helm

by Mike S on Jan 15, 2008 1:13 PM EST reply actions

They just do not care. They do not give a damn. I sat right behind the Nets bench and I have several times this year during bad losses. They do not care. They show up to work and play and if they lose they shrug it off and say oh well, maybe next time. The expressions on the bench should be pissed off and angry ones. Instead jerks like Carter are sitting there fooling around and goofing off. Unacceptable.

Nets Basketball: No Pride, No Character, No Heart.

by Joe P on Jan 15, 2008 2:07 PM EST reply actions

I think all of this “wait for Curly to get back” stuff is fools gold. Curly is not going to magically turn this ship around, nor do we even know if he can ever be the same guy again.

Rod Thorn has screwed this team in two ways

1)Giving Frank a pass when its obvious that his coaching has led this team on a decline ever since he got the job. Thorn is a great basketball mind yet can’t understand that this idiot’s system and coaching have ruined this squad. The Nets offense is a laughing stock.

2)Signing Vince Carter to this contract. I’d have sooner given Kidd an extension than resign this idiot…he took off the first month of the season, got hurt, and after a stretch of brilliant games has just said “screw it” out of the blue. He lacks professionalism because we have seen enough of Carter to know when he is out there playing with some heart and when he is out there to get a paycheck.

There is no light at the end of the tunnel unless we get Carter and Frank out of here. I’m more disgusted with Carter than Frank at this point in time because this man is dogging it and is on the bench laughing about it. Blow this thing up, or get a coach in there that demands excellence from his star players.

omg, I apologize for the unintentional curse word. lol! This is what I meant to say.

I think you guys are overreacting. There is no shame in losing to the Blazers, who are arguably the NBA’s hottest team at the moment.

The horrible 4th quarter from the Boston game carried over into this one. Guys just need to get their confidence up again. This is just a mini funk they’re in.

by rich on Jan 15, 2008 4:19 PM EST reply actions

This was a good game to watch, watching the other team. I don’t believe Carter or Jefferson or Kidd or even the rookies are at fault because of a bad game. Same story, we all get killed with their outside shooting and what’s ironic and compounded the problem we killed ourselves because we cannot shoot the ball, I don’t think it’s defense they were all clear shots and good team plays.
It looks like all NETS gameplan are all simple and predictable to defend and any defense NETS put up are all easily manageable, “it looks like boys let the NETS shoot from outside they cannot do that”. Any defensive or offensive adjustment we made are all countered. That’s why nothing seems to work. I beleive the gameplan of the other team "just shoot that ?%#^^^ ball. No matter how hard the player play, it seems the NETS game plan do not work, which had been obvious on elite team because they could not shoot. What’s funny we are home and the talent we have should be enough, I believe at least we have the luxury to shoot already one million times more than the visiting team. My question is why the NETS looks like we don’t have any talent? Is it really the preparation of the other team or NETS preparation is not good enough, maybe one million more practice shooting. Come on everyone practice everyday. Out of 12 players we should have at least 3 or 4 can shoot 50%. Is that hard to analyze who cannot shoot during games or is it hard which one these guys can shoot, “They all don’t look like Petrovic”. If this isn’t the case we need to replace both Jefferson and Carter because they can not shoot. Trade both of them for Kobe, at least that guy will shoot, nothing to be ashamed of, the more he hog the ball , the more wins we will have, forget about teamwork, just shoot that &*#%$^Ball.

I don’t know what’s going on w/ Vince, but I think there’s a reason why he’s not performing like he’s capable of.

Everybody knows how great he has been in the past – a bonafide superstar.

But, I think there’s something going on that the general public just doesn’t know about.

It could be anything.

He might be purposely dogging it for some reason;
he might be in poor physical shape;

he could be having a problem w/Kidd that needs to be cleared up (sometimes they look like they’re not enjoying each other’s company very much);

he might resent not being the main ‘go to’ guy anymore;

he might not like Brian Hill or Frank;

or, he might just be getting old (after all, this is his 11th year in the league).

It could be anything – but it’s something. Something is affecting his performance, and if I was Frank, I would try to get to the bottom of it before too long.

Because whether he’s getting paid millions or not, if he’s going thru some unknown problem, the Nets are not going to get their money’s worth.

by NetKnic on Jan 15, 2008 7:42 PM EST reply actions

Some of you are too harsh on VC. I see Mr. Dollar Bill being critical of him in every response. RJ has stunked the place up too. I think RJ has hurt this team more than VC. The sad thing about it is that everybody see VC’s errors but can’t comprehend that RJ has hurt his game by demanding the ball more. When VC is the offensive threat, we are in better shape. VC draws the defenders toward him, so that leaves his teammates open. I notice when RJ get the ball it’s one shot and out. In other words, we have more options when VC is our offensive threat.
