Scott Still Bitter About Nets Firing

Byron Scott's Hornets got hammered last night by the Lakers, but his coaching ability is no longer questioned. Not so in New Jersey. When he was fired in 2004, he tells Adrian Wojnarowski he knew the long knives were out to get him, knew what his assistants and players were plotting. He also admits he made mistakes while in New Jersey, which he claims he corrected in New Orleans.

I was one of those guys that wanted Byron out of here… Boy was I wrong, just wanted the guy not to be so arrogant and stuck up…. I still think he cost us a few games against the SPurs but in hind sight he could have gotten more out of this team then LFrank ever will!

I don’t care I would welcome Byron back over Frank anyday.

Jordan, O’Koren and Frank were PLOTTING against Scott?? Give me a break. Frank wouldn’t plot against his worst enemy. O’Koren is as classy a pro as you’ll ever meet. And Jordan – thanks to his superb coaching ability and close relationship with Kidd, could have had Scott’s job any time he wanted – but instead chose the job in his hometown of Washington D.C.

Scott got fired for one reason and one reason only – Kidd AND K-Mart didn’t like his coaching style. They thought he was too aloof, too detached from the nuts and bolts of coaching. It’s one thing to delegate some responsibilities to your assistants, as Scott did. But it’s quite another to let your assistants do everything,
as Scott also did. That’s because there are some things that ONLY a head coach can do.

For example, during the ‘00-’01 season I remember K-Mart’s mother complaining to the media about Scott’s stoic sideline demeanor, about how he never backed up the players against the refs. Scott usually led the league’s coaches in FEWEST technical fouls. This annoyed the heck out of Martin, and later Kidd. Soon after Frank replaced Scott, Kidd remarked that the team now had a coach “who has our backs”. Unfortunately for Kidd and his teammates, Frank turned out to be more a pom-pom waving cheerleader than imposing sideline presence.

I liked Byron but I’m happy with what Frank has done, especially since he has done it with not-so-complete teams. I don’t know why everyone hates on Frank.

Kidd is a back-stabber. He has had a heap of coaches fired.

byron must’ve been smoking that good stuff…..“long knives were out to get him” and “assistants plotting against him”. that’s paranoia at its finest.

Scott was an ***hole thats why Kidd and KMart fired him thats it…He was a mean coach who would get under players skin…Kidd hates coaches like that just remember Skiles…w/e I think Frank is not a complete coach but so was Scott (idk about now)

Frank still has more wins in less time than Scott. He has 175 wins and he’s not even 40 yet. I’m pretty sure he’s going to have 1,000 wins in his career.

I don’t have to read this article to tell you how much I disliked Scott. He never had a game plan. I remember when Kidd was looking for a play from the side line and Scott said nothing. He would just stand there with his arms folded and let Kidd coach the team. I like Frank’s play calling, I just don’t like his substitutions.

After game 6 of the Spurs/Nets Finals, I would have fired Scott too. There was a stretch where he left K Mart glued to the bench when we needed him out there desperately.

I wish Eddie Jordan was given the job. Can you imagine this roster in the hands of Jordan?

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 10, 2008 1:06 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, I remember he left Kittles on the bench in game 6 too. But how could anyone rather have Frank than Scott? Bad decisions in the NBA Finals is better than losing in the 2nd round every year.

by TJ on Jan 10, 2008 1:30 PM EST reply actions

I disagree…i think the only reason Scott got that far is cuz Kidd took that team that far…Now Kidd can’t take them that far cuz EAST is much stronger and our team doesn’t not have K-Mart, Van Horn and Kittles…

There’s NOT A GM in the league, other than Rod Thorn, who would hire Frank over Scott to coach their team. That’s not to say that Scott is a great coach, but he’s certainly a FAR BETTER COACH than Frank will ever be. Remember, Scott took the Nets from the cellar to the penthouse. Frank took the Nets from the penthouse to the second round and out. No matter how many coaching deficiencies Scott had, he STILL MUST GET SOME OF THE CREDIT for the Nets’ major turnaround under his watch.

There’s also NO DOUBT that allowing EDDIE JORDAN to slip away to the Wizards instead of making him the Nets’ head coach was one of Thorn’s WORST BLUNDERS!!!

I agree 100% again… eddie Jordan would have us competing every night! LFrank, is in my opinion just an assistent. How do you constantly keep Collins in the rotation? Cat, by far is better then him… He never would have waited this long to make the change to the youngsters…. Thorn, probably keeps him on because he knew he screwed up and wants the players to work it out… The problem isn’t the players it’s LFrank….

by John on Jan 10, 2008 4:22 PM EST reply actions

collins offers no upside to the team other than handicapping nets offense. until he’s removed from prominent role, nets aint goin no where. this is where frank loses respect from fans. why doesn’t he let magloire play??? he could give nets new dimension.

by Sly Dave on Jan 10, 2008 5:06 PM EST reply actions

Jordan and O’Koren were not assistants the year Scott was fired. So, I really don’t think they were the ones he was referring to. Also, from what I read during that time Thorn would not have hired Jordan as head coach anyway.

As we have seen for this season, the Nets need someone like Scott to whip their behinds to compete 4 quarters. Frank might be too mellow of a fellow. See how the Hornets have competed.

I have no doubt that Kidd is a mastermind in the locker room, and the fate of the coaches is partly decided by him.

stop bashing collins already he’s coming off the bench

by Ben on Jan 10, 2008 9:58 PM EST reply actions

Byron, needs to get over it. That’s why he was fired, always spiteful

by Jerrod on Jan 10, 2008 10:32 PM EST reply actions

@ newark hawk
That wasn’t Scott who took this team to the Finals, IT WAS KIDD. If Scott did truely bring this team from the cellar to the penthouse, then why did he lead this team to a 26-56 record the season before?
