Same Ol' Story - Nets Fall to Rockets

Begin with a slow start. Then mix in a lack of energy, a handful of careless turnovers and a few offensive droughts. Hold the key stops and you have the perfect recipe for a Nets home game this season. Friday, it was the Houston Rockets who were the beneficiaries of the Nets' IZOD ineptness. They took an early double-digit lead behind the hot shooting of Tracy McGrady, led by 15 at halftime, and were never threatened after that. The Nets shot 43 percent from the field, committed 17 turnovers, and only got to the line 14 times. Vince Carter had 32 points and Richard Jefferson added 29, while Jason Kidd finished with 10 points, seven boards and seven assists in his return to action. With Boki Nachbar's 10 points, the top four scorers accounted for 80 of the team's 89 points. In a post-game interview, Jefferson called the Nets' string of double-digit deficits a "joke" and said it was the starters' fault.

Hey Guys lets face it Jason Kidd don’t want to be be here, He is the floor leader but his body language tonight said “Trade Me”. He sucked tonight.

by MixUp on Dec 7, 2007 10:07 PM EST reply actions

there is no way around it we need Nenad back. No primary scoring from 3 out of 5 of your starting line up is a disaster. Maglorie and Nenad. Imagine us scoring inside, and getting rebounds. Amazing. I dream of our potential, and it makes me realize if we can see the “light” that Kidd speaks of we can get the championship. Maybe Im crazy, because we just lost and I am so optimistic about the playoffs, but it’s just something about this team. We are missing 1 last thing, no trade can bring. Heart. a few more losses and it will come.

Besides Carter and Jefferson the other players like Nachbar, Kidd, Wright, Allen, Magloire did not show up.

Bad coaching.

Too much court time for Magloire and Collins, and hardly any time for Allen, who has been SHOOTING CLOSE TO 70% in the past five games.

Besides shooting great, Allen also grabbed 9 rebounds in both of the last two games.

no excuses but the refs f’n suck can they call one foul on yao he should of been foulded out in the 3rd quarter but anyway we suck either way

i was at the game tonight. there was no energy on the floor with everyone going through the emotions. it looked like a group of old men hanging out. if anyone from the management was watching, i bet they werent pleased with what their money is getting them. the fans are getting frustrated. the only remedy right now is to win from here on. with the way things are right now, things dont look very good.

by zambezi on Dec 7, 2007 11:35 PM EST reply actions

I actually didn’t watch the first half, but I knew they would be down 15 points.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m finding it hard to even be interested in this team this year. It’s three years now of the same problems.

And also, Greg Popovich looks like that Tobin guy from the Saw movies

by Larry Brown on Dec 7, 2007 11:38 PM EST reply actions

Yep. We’ve got two good players and one malcontent who doesn’t guard 3-point shooters anyway.

I did enjoy Magloire’s three takedowns, though. Those and Vince’s spinning jump shot were definitely the highlights of the evening.

There were many Chinese fans at arena for rooting Yao. But they were quiet and polite, unlike most other visiting teams’ fans.

by Josh on Dec 7, 2007 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Both teams made 35 shots and 7 three-pointers. Rockets made 7 more free throws but they had 10 more chances. At least we came back. You can’t blame anyone this time, even if the Rockets aren’t doing so well right now, they are still one of the best teams in the NBA.

Will this be the start of the old Carter? 28 shots, 12 made. I hope not.

by kevin on Dec 8, 2007 2:52 AM EST reply actions

Nets will be fine… Good thing is that Vince has been agressive, and i dont care how many shots he has taken..He has good game.Rj was good too..But they were not getting calls..i was frustrated with that..
Nets didnt get any help from Allen and Wright..
I like to see when Jamal Magloire is making hard fouls and he need to do that more often..
Looking at the schedule all the next 6 games are winnable..
I think the Nets will win at least 5 if not all 6…I can feel that they will enter in some winning streak..

Is it me or has Kidd stopped pushing the fast break?

by Sean Serritella on Dec 8, 2007 5:44 AM EST reply actions

beside kidd, carter and jefferson this team sucks big time-talentwise we should have a good bench with boki, magloire, williams but they are playing as bad as it get- especially boki

however, with marcus and nenad back I am still convinced that this team can make a lot of damage- especially VC is getting is game back

cheers

by dadi on Dec 8, 2007 5:52 AM EST reply actions

Houston’s whole game plan was to slow Kidd down and it worked. I definitely don’t think he was dogging it. He still looked like he was playing hard.

Our slow starts are no surprise with Krstic missing. We gotta get him back healthy. Make a minor trade, or bring in Gasol. But this team is too good of a team to give up now.

by Al on Dec 8, 2007 6:45 AM EST reply actions

Wow, did you guys realize we are still only a game out of fourth in the Eastern Conference? With all the problems we’ve had to far, that’s pretty impressive. It just shows that a lot of teams are struggling to find consistency right now, not just us.

by Al on Dec 8, 2007 6:48 AM EST reply actions

How can Malik Allen, a guy who has been knocking down jumpers with good regularity, get two shot attempts the entire game? It makes no sense.

Everyone says the starters are playing “3 on 5” on offense with Krstic out, but we don’t even utilize Allen’s scoring ability. He’s not a bad jumpshooter. Why doesn’t he get any chances?

If you want my scoring ability, make a trade for me, Pau Gasol.

by Pau Gasol on Dec 8, 2007 8:20 AM EST reply actions

Our bigs shoot 3 for 10 in about 67 minutes. For the second straight game, the other team’s center alone outscores all of our bigs by double digits. We cannot beat anybody but a doormat without a meaningful low post presence.

Every game Nachbar makes a one handed pass out of a spin move and throws it to the other team. He has to stop that. According to the Wages of Wins website, Boki is the second worst player in the Division. The only one worse is Twin.

We have no team speed and no low post threat. A recipe for mediocrity.

by mt57 on Dec 8, 2007 8:42 AM EST reply actions

I’m from the Jordan era and dynasty and we didn’t have players pointing fingers at his team-mates. This club has RJ and Kidd backstabbing their team-mates. A good team has to have character. This team lacks good chemistry first and foremost. Vince Carter is an-A rate guy on and off the floor. Kidd is a cancer and Jefferson is still immature and selfish. This is the truth.

by Kinney on Dec 8, 2007 10:33 AM EST reply actions

I have been optimistic all season, and this message board is full of optimism, but every night they play inconsistent on both ends of the floor, I get more doubtful. Yes, the next games are all winnable, but so were most of the past 4 or 5. I mean the Knicks at home, how much more winnable can it get?

kevin, I agree about VC, if he needs 28 shots to score 32 points, either start passing the ball more or take it to the hole. VC thinks he is a jump shooter, but only shows consistency for short stretches. They need an identity on offense, they have not scored in transition much, they have no post presence, and no lights out shooter – no wonder the Nets can’t score. To boot, the effort on defense is weak to say the least.

@mjs

No one complains when kobe takes 30 shots just to get 30 points. If anything he needs to play like this a lot more. lately he’s been averaging less than 20 shots per game. last night he was being more aggressive and he had over 20 points in the 3rd quarter. Don’t blame VC because the team sucks.

by King John da FiF on Dec 8, 2007 11:05 AM EST reply actions

I thought L Frank was some kinda basketball genius a few years ago?

At least thats what J Kidd was saying back when he got Byron Scott fired a few years ago.

Why are Nets still getting dominated inside??

By Yao Ming!!!!

I’m not putting down the 7’4" chinese center but, he should not be dunking on the Nets and theres no way he should be out rebouded by the Nets starting big men by only 1.

What ever happened to fundamental basketball?

When you have a dominant big man scoring on you and controlling your paint at home, put you biggest man on him and push him out of the lane!!!

Why does Jamaal Magloire only get 20 minutes??

Big Cat can push Yao off the block when the ball gets dumped down low and he can force Yao to actually play some defense.

If the Nets want an inside presence why don’t they play the game like they have one.

Put Magloire on the low block, Hell Put S Williams there. Yao Ming has very slow feet, cant jump and gets no respect from the refs on defense.

Why would Frank just let Yao do whatever he wants??

If Frank is so worried about turnovers, outside shooting, and rebounding why isn’t he dumping it down low to show teams, this is where we are going.
We are going inside!

Carter and Jkidd on the same side of the court as the ball when it gets passed inside.

RJ and Boki or Williams on the other.

You have to respect Kidds passing and VC’s shooting so there is no double team to worry about.

Let Magloire work on the other teams big man- get him into foul trouble, score on him and free the weak side for rebounds.

The rockets were playing Battier at the 4 and he is too small to play inside effectively.

Why is S Williams only getting 11 minutes?

So now the Nets second best Rebounder and Shot Blocker are on the bench and on the floor for a total of 30 minutes!!!!
These 2 need to average 30 minutes each not combined!!
Just imagine if Mutumbo had played,
we would have been blown out by 20!

No wonder the Nets are still considered soft.

The coach is too!!

Dump it down low and kick it out for a three or
Dump it down low and go back door.

The Nets offense has looked the same for 3 years and everyone has figured them out.
Thats why we have so many turn overs.

You cant send your guards into the paint with noone backing them up.
Twin doesnt even put his hands up on offense, he sets a screen and goes to talk to the baseline cameramen.

This team needs a change of philosophy, which means a change in coaches.

In 2001 and 02 the Nets always seemed like the smartest team on the court. Like they had an answer for anything you did on offense or defense. Now they look like a streetball team.

Fire Lawrence Frank!!
or somebody break Twins leg!!

Do something these 2 are gonna spell doom for this team. I’m sorry Net Fans, We need a change!!

Help Larry Brown Where Are You!!!

by Jay aka HeavyDuty on Dec 8, 2007 11:07 AM EST reply actions

VC need to score more points, beside him none of the PF or ceter know how to pass the ball or take it to the hole. It’s a shame they need to file the coach and trade Collins, his money can get a good PF, rebound and defense

by vc fans on Dec 8, 2007 11:16 AM EST reply actions

Message to LFRANK: your team is going nowhere, so play SWilliams, MWilliams (when ready) , Wright and Boone to see if we have anything. I don’t get this coach – they are down, way down, and he sticks with the starters. Sit them and let’s lose but develop some talent.

by geo on Dec 8, 2007 12:38 PM EST reply actions

I just realized something. Carter led us in scoring 4 times this season. We are 1-3 when Carter outscores RJ. Now it’s too early, and this team won’t be the same in the next few months, but I think Carter should just set his teammates up for shots. Just a thought.

by kevin on Dec 8, 2007 12:43 PM EST reply actions

now let be fo’ real. Who would want Collins? He is the most pathetic player in the history of the NBA. I agree with one poster that question whether LFrank and Collins are a twosome….hehehe!

by MJT on Dec 8, 2007 1:02 PM EST reply actions

Same old story. Not really worth watching. Magliore really stunk up the place. Too many minutes for Collins. Not enough minutes for S. Williams and Allen. (Did anyone notice – S. Williams has a 15 foot jump shot. I say play him until he fouls out!).

Team needs Krstic and M. Willimas. If that doesn’t work – its over without a meaningful trade.

Frank doesn’t have the pieces, but he’s not getting anything out of the pieces he has. They’re starting to look like the Knicks. They no longer believe in themselves.

by halwas on Dec 8, 2007 4:02 PM EST reply actions

the whole problem started with frank changing their offense and hence their identity this year. instead of building on what was a good finish (including injuries/) last year, the team took 50 steps backwards. now if you notice(especially kevin) when this team has rj as their primary scorer they are on the worst offensive teams in the league. there are many reasoins why. rj should get his shots and be a major role in the offense, but the fact of the matter is when he gets the ball the ball stops there. he cannot create for others and can hardly create for himself. he needs kidd and carter on the floor to get the proper spacing in order for him to take his man one on one. we all saw when carter was injured that it reinforced that rj is not a franshise player but a complimentary allstar palyer. now when he is the focus of the offense it means less shots and oppurtunities for all of the others specailly boki antoine and even kidd. when carter and kidd are the focal points they are able to get everybody involved and the offense is much more fluent. this year frank has only called vc’s # when they are down big, and thats why they get a chance to get back. also ever since rj has took a larger role in scoring, his defense has considerably gone weaker and he hardly rebounds for a guy who’s that athletic(he should at least average 7rpg).also he doesnt run the break as often anymore, which is killing our team.plus his shooting pct isnt his ideal 48-49pct. the team should revert back to the 2005-2006 season when they had a pretty good team. they had no depth at all but they played with an identity. if it wasnt for uncle cliffy getting suspended and rj spraining his ankle i thought we could of beaten miami. the team should build on that year. last year was similar but way too many injuries. a healthy kristic is a major factor, but look at washington without their best player arenas and see how they are playing(good recognition by Al in the zone). they laso have hardly a front court but thay have coaching. frank is unable to indentify talent and use it accordingly. he has the team playing upside down. he must identify who is who and how is how. carter averaging 14 touches a game and rj avereging over 27 touches a game including free throws is creating a large inbalance. the nets should be playing off their best two players kidd and carter and guaranteed better results will occur. look back at last year and the 2004-2005 season when it was just kidd and carter and a bunch of no names fill ins. they paractically single handedly put their team in the playoffs. now they should build on it not squash it.

@ mina

Everything you said about RJ is true. Great observation.

Casting RJ as the primary scorer is a bad move, for all of the reasons you stated.

He’ll do much better – for the team as a whole – in a supporting scoring role.

As you pointed out, burning all this energy on offense has caused his defense, rebounding and fast-break running to suffer.

This hurts the team more than his scoring helps it.

by NetKnic on Dec 8, 2007 7:14 PM EST reply actions

@ Mina
I agree with you at some of your points. I have to correct you though. Including 2 pointer, 3 pointer, and free throws, Carter averages 24 shots and RJ averages 30 shots. If you only include 2 pointers, Carter averages 15 shots and RJ averages 17 shots. So both are a bit more balanced than people think. It’s just that RJ gets to the line 10 times and Carter only 6. RJ is getting most of his points from the line. And both players are practically the same, statistically-wise.

And like I said before, Carter led us in scoring 4 times so far this season. We are 1-3 when Carter leads us in scoring.

by kevin on Dec 8, 2007 9:26 PM EST reply actions

Mina you know your ****.
I was thinking how Carter and Kidd were invincible the past two years together but after RJ (whom I love) has taken a major role in the offense, Boki, Wright, and even Kidd shots have been anemic. Before Carter injury the past seasons, Boki, House, even Collins were rewarded easy shots. I love RJ but his teammates are suffering because RJ is not a creator plus he is never doubled teamed like carter. I think the offense should flow back in the hands of Carter so that Boki, Wright, Sean Williams,Kidd, Allen can get more touches and easy transition shots. I see the ball more and more in the hands of Carter but Boki and the rest of them look lost right now. Let’s share the wealth.

by MJT on Dec 8, 2007 9:55 PM EST reply actions

Nets fans are more knowledgeable than the coaches.LOLOL

by MJT on Dec 8, 2007 10:05 PM EST reply actions

kevin i dont know where youre getting your stats from but im getting them from nba.com. before vc went for 28 shots against houston, he was under 14 shots per game and that includes 2 and 3’s..add foul shots it adds to under 17(two foul shots equal a touch)…regardless of that the point is when vc and kidd are the focal points the offense is much more fluid, and thats a fact..now most of the games that vc has outscored rj is when they despretaly need points because they dug themselves a huge hole, like down 18.at that point frank has no choice but calling his big gun’s #, vc.(which makes me think why does he have to wait until his team goes so down) Most of the time when your down 18 even if you make a strong comeback youre not gonna win.
