Hollinger: Don't Blame Big Three

John Hollinger, writing in the New York Sun, excoriates the Nets for not coming up with a supporting cast for the team's Big Three. Other than Sean Williams and Antoine Wright, Holllinger calls the rest of the team "downright comical". Unless Nenad Krstic and Marcus Williams get healthy soon, Hollinger predicts the Nets will be out of the playoff picture quickly. He had predicted a 39-win season.

Great article by Hollinger. We have the worst starting center in the league, everyone knows that. If this team ever got its act together and got players that complemented JK, RJ, and VC, we’d make some noise. Our best shot for getting more balance is to trade JK for a starting center and a younger, but competent, point guard.

Agree with Hollinger on this one. Hopefully Marcus comes back string and Nenad works his way back. Remember, it’s a lonnnnng season.

It may be a long season, but there are no guarantees that 1) others won’t go down and an injury to Kidd, Jefferson or Carter would be devastating; 2) Krstic is coming back any time soon or at the level he played at last season…this could be a season-long situation or 3) Marcus Williams is going to make that much of a difference. He didn’t play in training camp and will have missed 20+ games by the time he gets back.
I am not optimistic.

I concur. I don’t know why NJ didn’t do more with their 2 open roster spots before the start of the season.
They should have done whatever possible to get get Janero Pargo and resign Mikki Moore before they both signed with teams.

For once I agree with Hollinger. I think Thorn did a terrible job filling in the 4 and 5. He knew Krstic was not going to play for the first 3 months and yet all he got was Magloire and Allen. Come on. If Williams wasn’t surprising where would we be?

Trade Kidd? hahaha I’ve heard that before. It’s not going to happen in this lifetime, unless we get like 2 all-stars in return. NO ONE can bring what Kidd brings every night to this team, NO ONE. It’s really hard to trade something like that.
Newark Hawk, who cares. Like Hollinger said, our average winning difference is 4 points.
Trenton, I agree, but management hates to go over the luxury tax, even though Ratner said he’s willing to pay. Face it, we might as well get Mark Cuban as GM, at least he’s not afraid of spending money.
King John da FiF and Tim, I bet once we start winning after New Years, you guys will be praising Frank. IT’S TOO EARLY!!! IF YOU CAN’T STAND IT, GET ANOTHER TEAM!!! FRANK IS A GOOD COACH!!!

Kevin whut are you smoking? Frank is a horrible coach for the Nets in general I always wanted a vet coach like Lenny Wilkens or Rudy T. But we all know Thorn won’t spend big on coaching.

The Nets will be lucky to reach 40 wins. 2 Pistons bench players outrebounded our supposed “big three”.

The premise of the article is dumb. You can’t evaluate the whole supporting cast when Krstic and Marcus can’t play due to injuries. You can evaluate Boki and Magloire and note that they both are playing below their best even though they are both in contract years. And Twin is what he is and that hasn’t changed. ’Toine is getting better and can turn into a Bruce Bowen type over the long haul I think. Definitely this team misses Mikki Moore and it was really a mistake to let him go, because he cost only 50% per more than Magloire but he is about 500% more productive. Penny wise and pound foolish

the premise of Hollinger’s analysis would be dumb if he said:
“Nets plain suck because of my stats”
instead he said
“based on my stats, Nets are performing terribly outside the big 3. but if Krstic can regain his form and Marcus Williams adds some offense into the second unit, then Nets may be able to go on a run and mask their deficiencies”
therefore, he does have a point

I really hate this team, and especially Frank. Holligner really nails it in this article, Stiffins & Allen are horrible. It’s 3-on-5 basketball all the time. Always the hard way with the Nets, always.
It’s been a few years now of very mediocre basketball in a less than stellar conference. At some point, there has to be some accountability for the teams performance. You can’t blame injuries every year. Every team has injuries. Step it up!
What this team needs is a tough coach who isn’t a dogmatic * like Lawrence Frank and a coach who will see Stiffins & Allen for what they are – complete trash.

You are what your record says you are, and we’re 8 & 4 when Vince plays.

I finally agree with Hollinger. LF is retarded. He forgot Magloire exist.
by Jerrod on Dec 3, 2007 3:09 PM EST reply actions
we may have to let Kristic go. we can not wait for him and we need another scorer. 25 from rj and 25 from VC is not enough, which is why Kristic is so important. you do not always have a good shooting night, but in the post you can always knock down shots and dominate. in other words Kristic come back soon! your team needs you.and for the last time why are you rewarding collins with a starting spot when he does nonthing. magloire may not always score, but he rebounds.

Newark Hawk, we’re what our record says? So does that mean that Carter has to come off the bench for the rest of the season? Because we’re 4-0 when he comes off the bench, but 0-2 when he starts, ever since he came back from injury. And our 8 wins, our average winning difference is 4.4 points and we lose by an average of 17.4 points. So does that mean we really suck? So, that’s not true.

@ KEVIN
I don’t care if we win by half a point. A win is a win. There’s no style points in the NBA.

kevin do you notice that you are the only one whit that opinion.
it’s pretty obvious this team is an underachiever. the roster isnt that bad but frank is unable to use it properly. and that’s a fact. if i recall last year new orleans had tons of injuries to their best players and still stayed afloat in the west and almost made it to the playoffs. Now that’s coaching being able to maximize what you have. Frank cannot develop talent and thats a fact. Kidd develops talents and Carter right behind him. The only way i trade rj is for a execellent pf(like jo) or a very good pf and some good pieces with it(wilcox and change)Now if its between vc and rj you cannot compare. Vc is a franchise player as he has shown in his career, rj is a very good player but nowhere near vc and not a franchise player but a complementary player. hardly any skills relies solely on athletic ability. so by the time he is 30 say and vc is 33…vc will still be much better due to his skill and rj’s diminishing athletic ability. tht’s the absolute truth. people who are in the know would say the same thing. It was proven once and for all rj being the focal point with vc out the nets are as good as a jv team(75pts/game).
Hollinger is right on…allen and caollins you gotta be joking me…magloire is better than both of them put together and some…hopefully kristic and marcus come back strong and then we can have a strating lineup of kristic, swill,rj,vc,jkidd…with a decent bench of magloire, one of those garbage forwards that are left, boki, wright, and marcus williams…exactly how thorn wants it to be.
by mina on Dec 3, 2007 7:32 PM EST reply actions
Maglorie has to play I don’t mind allen he can sub and to give mins and start a few times here and there he can use some mins but mags has to start and collins the log has to not play much when he’s in we can’t score on a high school time lol he should be in the nbadll
by dre on Dec 3, 2007 11:26 PM EST reply actions
Mina, we were injured too. Remember? 5 of our players needed surgery, and yet we reached the playoffs. I don’t know about you but that’s really good coaching. Carter has proven that he’s a franchise player, true, but RJ’s been hurt practically half his career. He hasn’t shown what he’s truely capable of yet. So he has alot to prove and that’s a good motivation for any player, when their ability is being doubted.
