Nets Trade Ilic, Robinson and Cash to Hornets for David Wesley

The Nets have traded Mile Ilic, Bernard Robinson and cash considerations to New Orleans for David Wesley, who had recently decided to retire(his contract has a $250,000 buyout). "This transaction provides the Nets with roster flexibility for the upcoming season", said Rod Thorn, but the team does not have any immediate plans to fill their two new roster vacancies. The team is believed to be around $500,000 under the luxury tax threshold following the trade. The Hornets waived both Ilic and Robinson upon completion of the trade.

Wesley has a partially guaranteed contract for 2007-2008, so I’m guessing he’ll take a buyout and never be in uniform.
Good move to clear a roster spot and $$$ for Byars, Marcus Williams or the sentimental favorite Hite.

While minor in scope, this is a great deal. Neither of those guys would be any help to us. Wesley is a quality guard who can do something on a given night.
by Peter on Oct 29, 2007 12:43 PM EDT reply actions
Why not keep Hite then if they knew this was coming? Any idea if they can get Hite back. He showed some very impressive flashes….wondering!!!
by impatientNETfan on Oct 29, 2007 12:50 PM EDT reply actions
Waive this guy and sign Houston and Hite. Probably not going to happen but it’s wishful thinking. We’ll have at least two quality backups in every postion if we sign both.

Wesley won’t be coming here to play. He’s retired. Good move for us though. Bring back Hite and see what Allan Houston thinks about the situation.

Nets like carrying 14 players. Adding a player at vets minimum puts them right around the luxury tax threshold.
And Wesley has already announced his retirement.

What about bringing Hassan Adams back with Hite or Allan Houston? Cleveland just cut Hassan Adams off their roster.

zOMG! OMG!
It finally happened! Great move, really. It made my day.
I guess Wesley will take the buyout. Wondering who the Nets will sign next. I think they won’t be in a hurry though.
My best guess is they will play what they have right now, and come December, sign up someone based on needs.
It’s just prudent not to sign anyone this early.
Great news, really.

wow nets front office must have been reading our posts…i was just complaining about B-Rob and Illic yesterday. i wish we can get jermaine oneill, we’d really have something then. CHAMPIONSHIP perhaps.

Agree w/ Sly Dave. In order to have success in the NBA you need a dominant big. Although Krstic is an excellent player who can score at will, he lacks the toughness inside from someone like Kenyon Martin. I mean Shaq brought 4 rings to LA and goes to Miami and gives them one! An excellent analogy: A dominant big is like having dominant pitching. They contribute the most and are crucial to winning.
But with having two open roster spaces, I do not know how JO can be acquired. I mean figure it takes three players. Now the roster is down to what, 11? Although the logic behind this trade for future preference is uncertain, it was a good move financially.

Any thoughts on Jared Jordan? He was recently cut by the Knicks.

any thoughts on bringing on demetris nichols? he was cut by the knicks and he can really shoot the ball.

What did I say yesterday? Check the Hite story…NETS FANS…THINK TRADE!
I’ve read some suggestions here…
Houston – NJ has said they don’t want him. I don’t think the Knicks gave him a shot in PreSeason, but if the Nets got a scoop on his training camp, it must’ve been bad for Thornski to say they don’t want him. Houston’s out.
Jared Jordan – Do we really need another PG? I think he’ll get beat badly against quicker PGs and his defensive is just so-so.
Demetris Nichols – Jumpshooter that takes way too long to put up a shot, but when he’s on…he’s on. I don’t think the Knicks gave him a fair shot, but is he worth a contract? Cleveland might seem to think so. Who knows if we should.
Marcus Williams (AZ) – Nice height for a 2. Streaky. Cut by the Spurs which might say something (the champs don’t think he’s good) or nothing (Spurs don’t need him).
Robert Hite – I thought it was a good move cutting him off (see Hite story for my explanation). Let’s leave it at that.
Hassan Adams – Energy guy that is explosive on the baseline and plays average help and man D. Couldn’t get off the Nets’ weaker bench last year.
I don’t think any of these guys would make an immediate impact. We do need a shooter though. All those guys need a workout from us to warrant a second thought on from Thornski.
Then again…maybe trade some players for JO and bring some bad contracts? Who knows. Once again, for this team to get better and over the top, we need trades.

Jermaine Oneil is not the best option right now.Waht the nets need to do is hold off and see what happen in the next couple of months but make no trades until the end of season. There are going to be some awsome players available next season.Do not get Jermaine Oneil
by bark less on Oct 29, 2007 4:07 PM EDT reply actions
bark less…I think if the Nets wait until the trade deadline, we can get him for cheaper. He’ll want out by then and IND probably doesn’t want to lose him for nothing. We give them RJ + young talent, we’ll be fine.

Yes finally we got rid of that damn Illic, I just have 2 questions, do they plan on getting new players this year(2007-2008) or next year(2008-2009)?
Also what major(as in stars like JO or Kobe) contracts are expiring this/next year?
by Adam_y on Oct 29, 2007 4:40 PM EDT reply actions
We’re not signing Nichols.

This could be a play for Allan Houston. Nets are $500K under the luxury tax. if they sign a rookie right now, they can stay under. If they sign a second year player, he would require a $687.5K contract and put them over again.
If they wait a while, then they could sign Houston. Houston would cost $770K right now. Pro-rated in a few months the cost would drop to $500K or less.
Nets say they have no plans to add a player now.

The only problem with having 13 players is injury. We’re going to have problems if this happens.

from mike kahn at fox sports
Most Overated Player
Jermaine O’Neal, Indiana Pacers
J-O’s numbers are still solid although injuries have limited him the past four years, but he is still treated as a superstar when he is not. He has been less inclined to go inside in recent years, instead settling for jumpers. He can hit them, but the Pacers need his presence as a post player if they’re going to get back into the fray in the Eastern Conference. They would have been better off trading him to get more pieces to reconstruct. It sure is a lot different with Larry Bird calling the shots instead of Donnie Walsh.
I think we are better off now having not traded for him….especially chemistry wise

kevin, I don’t see that as more of a problem with having Ilic and Robinson on the team. Ilic can’t do much at this level and Robinson was already injured. If anything, we got it out of Frank’s head that those two are not an option for him if players were injured.

we should get derrick byars from vandy. he was rumored to be one of the players targeted with the 17th pick

i don’t think JO is overrated. if anything he is under appreciated b/c of the market he plays in. when he’s right he can lead a team to 60 wins, which he did 3 seasons ago. he’s a dominant shot blocker, can score in the post, and if someone on the nets can do that, to go along with kidd and carter they should win a championship. i’d say the nets go after him hard. rod please stop thinking “what if” and just pull the trigger. nets fans would love to see a championship before leaving NJ.
by Sly Dave on Oct 29, 2007 11:04 PM EDT reply actions
So on opening night, the Nets will suit up 12 players with an injured Marcus Williams in street clothes. That’s not so bad. And when Williams comes back, who sits?
by Net Income on Oct 30, 2007 12:26 AM EDT reply actions
Thorn is smart in taking a wait and see approach, allowing the team to acquire player(s) AS NEEDED. For example, if Boki got hurt, the team would need a wing shooter to replace him. If D.A. got hurt, the team would need someone to guard the TJ Fords of the league. If a trade is made, that creates other needs. Any player signed now would probably be here for the short-term only, dumped as other needs developed. And any player signed now would see little or no playing time, considering the 13 current Nets are ALL GOING TO PLAY SIGNIFICANT MINUTES. No need to waste even a non-guaranteed contract on another player at this point in time. Down the road, Thorn will have a much better idea of what the team really needs, if it needs anything at all.
